Today so far:
B: 8oz coffee with 1T hwc
L: 8 chicken wings (overcooked from frozen so they were like jerky)

Still full from the wings so not sure what's next...

Ended up eating more chicken wings yesterday.
Today I'm not very hungry and haven't gotten enough protein so probably will add the yogurt.

B - sf vanilla iced coffee with cream
L - half an artichoke with mayo
S - Greek yogurt?
D - chicken wings

When I read what you guys eat I am always shocked I eat as much as I do. I really have to just cut everything I eat in half, I think.

I am so tired and frustrated with all this eating and exercising crap.

Still need to get my evening vitamins in and will probably do some more water.

B: 8oz coffee with 1T hwc
L: 8 chicken wings (not the whole wings, but pieces)
S: 1 cup chicken broth with cayenne pepper
D: Alaskan smoked salmon mashed with cream cheese eaten on cucumber "crackers" and pork rinds

I wasn't hungry by the time dinner rolled around but I made myself eat..then after I was done, all of a sudden I felt hungry.

So I had 1 oz of macadamia nuts, too.

I'm at 112oz of water for the day.

Totals: 864 cals, 73g fat, 12g carbs, 42g protein

I'm feeling like I'm not getting enough calories. My number one focus is protein, so I try to build on that and add fats to increase the calories. My issue is that with following the pouch rules for eating, it makes it hard to get in a lot of food for the day. I only need about 1 cup in volume of food or 4-6oz of dense protein and I'm full. That's not a lot of calories consumed. Then I stop drinking 30 minutes before eating and I don't drink again until 30 minutes after eating. I also try to time my drinking with my vitamins since I have to take a total of 6 different doses a day to space out what my doctor wants me to supplement.

Plus, I try not to eat anything past 8pm so I'm not eating so close to going to bad. And I'm not feeling hungry, so I put off eating and just drink more water instead which pushes me eating back another 30 minutes.

I was very successful right after surgery following this plan; I'm just twisting it up this time by trying to raise my calories with some fats. I'm only 7 days into resetting my eating, so I'm not used to using sauces and dips with my lean proteins yet.

I'm trying to stay under 20g total carbs, so I let most of those come from high-fat dairy. I may switch to non-dairy fats and add some veggies back in, because I do miss the green stuff.

I truly admire your dedication and the rules you follow. I do a lot of what you do - especially with the drinking before and after - never during - meals, etc... I'm just in a funk in general (can you say a bit stressed) and so it takes about all I have to not just say the heck with it and really do some damage... I'll straighten myself out - just going to take me a few days I guess.

My caloric intake was low because my nutritionist stressed low fat/low carb/high protein, but I still managed to hit all the protein.

I can do 100+ protein days, but then my calories fall under 800 or so because I can't physically eat anything but the lean proteins. I was able to do it at the time because I was in complete control over every food item that came in the house. Now, I've got tons of junk food around, so psychologically I'm leaning towards NK because I can eat more decadently with the fats.

I'm just worried that with all the low calorie/high protein stuff I wrecked my metabolism. I did it for a solid 2.5 years with very little straying.

I also looked at the JUDDD which would let me alternate between NK and high protein...if it really works like it claims to in tricking the body to stay out of starvation mode.

So many choices....today has been a high calorie and higher carb day for me so far, but still under my keto calc recommendations. I may cheat tonight..and a cheat for me means eating past 8pm...still on-plan food choices, but just eating a little later than I like to let myself.
With RNY it's not selective about what we malabsorb. It's everything. Protein, fat, nutrients... further out the body gets a little better about absorbing calories but not vitamins and minerals.

Don't fight your capacity. Doing so only sets you up for binging. Fill it, but full it with whole food healthy choices!

I don't buy in to the no drinking 30 before rule. No one cloud justify it to my satisfaction for long term post ops. It doesn't physically make sense. So I don't bother. I drink right up to eating. I do wait 45-60 after though. THAT part makes sense.

The no drinking with meals and waiting awhile after drinking made so much sense for me that in the 10 months before I had my surgery, I actually put it into practice. I found I stayed fuller much longer and I lost 40lbs in those 10 months.

The no drinking before meals might be the one thing that has to give. I never really understood the rationale for it either...if the pouch is empty, it should just go on through. Still think it is a good idea for early pre-ops because their stomach may be swollen and the water wouldnt pass through as quickly.

Those were my thoughts exactly. I take very opportunity for hydration, including those 30 minutes before eating. Earlier out I agree, but not after 6 months of so. I'm dehydrated all the time as it is because I run, in Texas, in the summer.

I also follow the no drinking during and after eating and I also don't see the need to stop drinking 15 or 30 minutes before I eat. The no drinking after eating helps me not graze. Example, I've eaten lunch and 30 minutes have passed and now I have a little more room in my stomach and maybe there is some little tidbit I'd like to pop in my mouth, but I tell myself, wait, you need to drink, if you eat, it will be another 30 minutes before you can drink again, you have to drink first and then you can eat again. Once I'm done drinking the grazing urge is usually more manageable or gone entirely.

Just not hungry the past few days. Since going off "the pill" I have more noticeable appetite swings.

Yesterday I actually didn't even eat as much as planned because I was busy and didn't get hungry so I kinda "forgot".

Ya, not too worried at the moment. If tomorrow or the next day my appetite doesn't pick up I will add an extra protein shake or greek yogurt in the evening later after dinner or something.

Interesting... Heather, I was curious what exactly my protein level was yesterday after you were asking me about it... I knew it was lower than usual, but I DID still meet the minimum from my surgeon.
Yesterday I had 66 grams of protein. With VSG, the most common recommendation (and my surgeon's office's recommendation) is 60-90.

I tend to look at everything with a filter on I think. I know I'd be dragging at that low amount. I need 100+ to keep my labs above normal. Even more because I'm so active.

Speaking of labs, I'm getting a full draw tomorrow. Fingers crossed. I'm thinking iron is low again but hoping it's not!

Do you supplement your iron? I was and it was still low and I started taking it with a vitamin C pill..and now it is in the low-end of normal range.

Now my D levels are something else. I take 5000iu in the morning and 5000iu before bed. I use the dry D3 tabs as I know the softgels won't absorb. There is also 400iu of D in each of my 4 daily doses of calcium citrate. I don't know how my D is low them I am taking 12000iu of it a day!

What kind of iron are you taking? Your best bet is either carbonyl or heme. Sulfate, gluconate, or fumerate - you might as well toss them in the garbage as much good as they'll do you going in your mouth.

I take 225mg of elemental iron in the form of carbonyl a day over 2 doses. One kind I take contains Vit C, the other does not so I take it with a C. You want to look at how much ELEMENTAL iron something contains, not the overall iron mg. Heme and carbonyl are 1:1 with elemental iron. Meaning if it says 60mg iron then you are getting the whole 60mg iron. Other ferrous types are not.

With ferrous sulfate you are only getting 65mg of iron per 325mgdose.
Ferrous fumerate is a little bit better 65mg per 200mg dose.
Ferrous gluconate is even worse with only 35mg per 320mg dose.

Most of it is iron salts, which the body does not absorb and is what makes stool black and people constipated.

But nothing is as good as heme or carbonyl, clearly.

I supplement with 50,000iu dry D3 a day. I was taking those 3x a day when mine was low and reduced to once daily after about 4 months. I also get lots of sunshine daily while out running or gardening.

Questions. Maryposa you mentioned a Big Train product. Mocha I think. Good? I have a skewed schedule so breakfast doesn't usually happen. A good drink for mornings would be great.

To everyone. What protein products do you love?

HT your chocolate shake...did you say it was isopure also? Still haven't ordered mint. Stores don't carry it here. I've got to find another protein drink I can stand. Your chicken, avocado, hummus meals sound so good. Shopping for it today. Do you just eat the hummus? Not on anything? Stupid question maybe but do you just use canned chickpeas?

I've been having boars head chicken, muenster and a piece of bacon rolled up. It's pretty good. Also been really enjoying a small homegrown tomato seeded, peeled and flattened with a large amount of tuna salad, a little seasoned breadcrumbs, butter and broiled.

FINALLY starting to feel better. I haven't had a full blown, going to fall on the floor sick episode in about two weeks. I've been able to do more things. Was in Fl with my mom and did all kinds of shopping, went to the beach and went bowling!!!! The closest I've been to feeling normal in 5 months. VERY excited about that. Doing a full grocery shop today so will see for sure then. Must say, though, had a very hard time eating away from home. Didn't eat nearly enough. Even when home having a hard time getting that dang protein up. Working on it.

Barbinga -1.5 oz grilled chicken breast (leftover and sliced), 1/4 fresh tomato, 1/4 fresh avocado, 55g canned chickpeas, 28g spicy red pepper hummus and 10 fresh snap peas. I usually eat the hummus with the snap peas as a conduit. Then if there's any left I just mix it in with everything else. Most days I can eat all or almost all. Some days I can't eat much at all. Remember I'm 4 years out so your amounts may be smaller!
