Cold and Suffering from Fatigue

I'm not sure where to go for help, so I am hoping you have ideas.

I haven't had WLS, but I am suffering from fatigue. I've lost over 100 pounds and have to keep eating less and less over time to keep the weight off. Losing more is crazy hard. I went low carb, then paleo, then gave up meat most days, then gave up fat most days, then only a protein-sparing modified fast worked, then I gave up dairy...now only the potato hack seems to help me with weight loss.

Anyway, when I got to the 80 pound mark, I really went cold and suffered from fatigue, and it keeps getting worse. It is really bad now.

Someone told me to drink ginger tea. Surely some of you have suffered from this. Do vitamins help? I just started on Emergen-C and the Emergen-C multivitamin drink powders. I have heard pills are not absorbed.

Thank you!

KT--I have had an interesting segue from the PH. I have been doing Joel Fuhrman's Eat To Live, which is basically lowfat, no grains, vegan. I had been both cold and tired before. After 4 weeks on ETL, I am so energized! It is remarkable! I have been so exhausted and fatigued for years. the first week or two detoxing were not pleasant, but now I feel wonderful. Just a thought

are they monitoring Free T3 and Free T4 thyroid levels? sounds like you might need some help there!

try the thyroid board here for more testing advice. I am not an expert at all, but I know thyroid meds turned my life around. at the worst, I just felt like curling up in a corner under a pile of blankets and sleeping all the time!

good luck.

I know you can get cold when you're not eating enough calories. Well I mean when you're eating less calories than your body thinks it needs, if you have fat stores obviously you have energy available but you can still feel cold. Fatigue, I can't really answer to that, I've heard that the best remedy to fatigue is exercise or walking, though it seems counter intuitive. Are you very active? That is if the fatigue isn't related to something hormonal etc.

What does your iron intake look like? Have you had it checked - it sounds like symptoms of anemia.

Thank you for your replies.

I have been to the doctor. He did a blood draw to check thyroid, b12, d, blood counts, etc...all was normal. He was suspicious because of the potato hack (he knows about this - he reads the paleo blogs).

It is pretty bad, to the point of blue fingernails, I am so cold. I've started doing things like leaving the garage door up, leaving the stove on, forgetting meetings, being unable to function without lists, failing to recall simple words, etc.

My iron intake is OK. I'm taking liver pills and eating oysters once per week. I started adding frozen spinach to my smoothies this week. I'm also going to take d3 + k2 (i think my package arrived with vitamins today).

I do exercise, although I am out of commission due to a sprained ankle. A walk does warm me up. However, I disagree strongly on vigorous exercise as way to warm up. I do 20 mile bike rides. I am completely unable to do them without eating raisins. First try this season I hit the wall at mile 15 and almost didn't make it back to the car; mile 18 to the end I could barely petal and then could barely walk when I got off the bike. I had to get into a hot tub and take ibuprofen to get over the pain. Next ride, I took raisins along and had a lot of energy to petal! It was night and day.

Here is the thing....EVERY time I go on a long bike ride, I get noticeably COLDER. It is really awful after a ride. I'm sure that people who eat up get a boost from this, but in the context of a low calorie diet, it doesn't work this way. I'm a bit worried about it, but I want to be fit and be able to do fun things, so I keep trying.

I will go back to the doc in 3 months to get the blood draw again in case deficiencies or problems show up then.

I really hope you find a solution to your problem. That said, I will tell you that if I were you, I would be going to the doctor again way before three months. I'd go to a different doctor...it sure seems like a 2nd opinon and/or a fresh perspective could be beneficial.

KT - I've been all messed up since my potato hacking as well. I guess you didn't specifically say whether this started before or after hacking but my GI has been screwed up all month. Seriously, I eat anything OTHER than those darn rice & potatoes and I'm out of commission for days. And I'm not talking like I hit McDonalds - simple things like air popped popcorn, crackers, a small bit of pecans, etc. Its pretty bad.
I wonder if this might be partially due to the hack? Like I said, I'm not sure of the timing for you. I might have to try what Ouiz said about going more ETL and PHD. The one day I added veggies to my PH it worked out ok.
Now I'm just rambling, sorry. I just feel so bad for you. But, hey, WTG on finding a Dr who reads the paleo blogs!

It started before the potato hack but has worsened. I am able to get by on less food now, which I think is the source of the problem.

Thanks for the note - I am sorry to hear of your predicament with the GI issues.

I love my doc. He put me on low carb in the first place. He read Neanderthin many years ago and went paleo at that time, long before the paleo diet was hot.

I don't want to take thyroid meds, so I am not going to go seeking out a doc that will prescribe it. I have looked into it and I am just not willing to go that route. My levels are normal (full panel).

I can't decide what I want to do. My body obviously would rather shut down than let go of fat stores.

Have your thiamine levels checked. I was the same way always cold and seriously fatigued. My thiamine was down to three and it should be over 20. I take a 100 mg thiamine pill and within three months it was back to normal.

When you say "Full" what do you mean by that? Also, what were your results and what were the ranges? Just because you show as "Normal" doesn't mean that you don't have an issue.

Also, I am a little concerned that you are disregarding the idea of treating a potential issue. If you were diabetic, would you not take insulin? If you had cancer, would you not treat it? Thyroid disease is the same sort of thing.
Speaking from experience, my thyroid "full" panel was "normal". I found a doc who would be willing to actually give me a true "full" panel and prescribe to symptom, and now I no longer have brittle hair and nails, I am not cold and my skin isn't dry.

We need to be careful about not crossing the line into medical advice. I think suggesting what labs to ask your doctor about is ok, but it really sounds like the OP needs a specialist.

I've been eating more food for a week now, and I have significantly warmed up.

THis apparently is the starvation response. I am just wondering if anyone has conquered this.

I am exasperated. I used to lose weight when I cut back. Now I get tired and cold and weight loss is difficult unless the cut back is taken to extremes and it keeps getting worse.

KT--I had the same problem as you, but after shifting to a fuhrman style diet, I am eating a lot more, losing fat rapidly, and getting warmer. It was a process. The first week or two of fat free vegan eating, I froze, but then something started changing for me. I have had SUCH a hard time losing weight over the last ten years. Seems miraculous to me. I am eating beans and one potato a day for carbs, no fruit other than berries, and the rest vegetables. Just a thought. I know you tried it before and didn't like it, but I wonder what would happen if you gave it a few more weeks.

I have McDougall's book and Furman's. I just don't feel well on a lot of vegetables. I cooked up a pot of soup Blonde with a Rose suggested (Normandy veg with squash). I just can't bring myself to eat it. I can only seem to do raw in a smoothie where I can't taste it.

I feel really strong since I started drinking the kefir. I think I have to figure out incorporating it into the next plan (whatever that is - maybe 80% McDougall)
