Calories?
 
Hello all! I've been banded since 2005 and have about 15-20 more pounds to lose. I am having trouble with losing the rest of the weight and I keep seeing most low carbers talk about not eating enough calories. Does anyone know how our calorie intake should look as we had weight loss surgery? I average 1250 calories daily according to a website I use to track my food. I never counted calories before, because there has never been a need. I only counted carbs.

I would suggest that you use a website or app like ************. It will track your calories and stuff. Then you can adjust to lose. IMHO---it's just calories in, calories out. Basic! Just eat less calories than your body needs or exercise away calories and you will lose.

I guess I can't list the website but there are tons that track calories, food, exercise.

I agree it's calories in vs calories out. BUT I also believe that the TYPE of calories matter just as much because the body uses them in different ways. If I eat 1200 calories in bread and twinkies vs 1200 calories in protein and veggies I'm going to have a whole different outcome.

There are calulators online that can do this for you, but I always preferred to do it myself. Makes it seem more "real".

So use the Harris Benedict equation to find your Basal Metabilic Rate (amount of calories you need to survive laying like a lump doing nothing but breathing basically).

BMR = 655 + ( 4.35 x weight in pounds ) + ( 4.7 x height in inches ) - ( 4.7 x age in years )

THEN calculate the number of calories you need to MAINTAIN your current weight based on your activity. Be honest with yourself, overestimating your activity doesn't do you any good at all. Even better - UNDER estimate it.

Multiply your BMR (above) times the number in your level below:

Little to no exercise? Daily calories needed = BMR x 1.2
Light exercise (1–3 days per week)? Daily calories needed = BMR x 1.375
Moderate exercise (3–5 days per week)? Daily calories needed = BMR x 1.55
Heavy exercise (6–7 days per week)? Daily calories needed = BMR x 1.725
Very heavy exercise (twice per day, extra heavy workouts)? Daily calories needed = BMR x 1.9

NOW. For weight maintainence do nothing. For weight loss subtract 500 calories (weight gain add 500) and that is your magic number for daily calories.

Thank you for the replies and thank you myyellowstang for a detailed reply! I've been using an online calculator, but it was nice to to the math myself. The number I got for my BMR was 1512. For maintenance, it is 1814 and weight loss is 1314 (as long as my calculations are correct). I underestimated my amount of exercise just in case. It was confusing, because many people kept saying I was not eating enough calories, but those people did not have bariatric surgery. Even though I had half of the fluid removed from my band several years ago, the amounts of food I can eat are still restricted. That's why I thought I would get the opinion of those who are also low carbers and have had weight loss surgery. :-)

The amount of calories needed to maintain your body or to lose weight don't change with WLS. Just the amount you can eat. :) Your numbers should be the same as a regular person.

Crud! According to that, I should keep my calories under 1500 a day. I have not been doing that... and, it is HARD! Man have I been slipping!! How did I do this before? I swear my stomach must be stretched. :I I have to get a hold of myself!

Your stomach isn't stretched. Likely it's more accommodating than it was originally, but I bet if you ate dense protein and non starchy veggies you'd see full faster. I know that's the case with me!!!!
