I've been eating way too many carbs lately. I really need to kick it to the curve. Last night a family member brought over a cake and I found myself picking at it. I pinched a corner 4 times. It was almost nothing but I wanted more. I felt the carb cravings coming up again. It's not self sabotage either. My mind wants carbs now just as it did before low carb. Not good. Need to go back and do induction or something.

I have an exam today at school. I'm going to do great!! I see it already.

Beth so nice to see you posting again after your surgery. Glad that everything went smoothly. Have you tried a heating pad for your shoulders? I never used it but I was told would help.

thanks Lisa and Monkee! I'm glad I am doing well on the scale because I am really struggling with some things "spiritually", not sure if that's the right word but it's not quite emotional either... more just about me, how I feel about the idea of a relationship, and some things that I feel I have veered away from and been out of touch with that used to be a huge part of my character and who I am, this has nothing to do with my weight loss success, it started when I left my exhusband for good in Sept 2009. Sorry for venting that, but I wanted to share and also I am happy and proud of myself that thinking about / realizing these things hasn't made me feel like becoming a frump and sabotaging my weight loss progress.

I have a few questions regarding WLS and low carb. What is the safest lowest amt of carbs we can have while getting proper nutrition? What are all of you doing? I'm eating too much, having way too many cravings, and I want to do something!

Anyone have experience with taking coconut oil after having WLS? I have the Gastric Band.

That depends on your school of thought. Some believe that zero/ no carbs are required for proper nutrition. Others believe that fiber is a MUST and therefore carbs are required no matter what.

I, personally, don't go over 20 carbs a day. But my weight loss is slow so it might behoove me to add some berries or veggies to my diet.

I also consume coconut oil. I make chocolate bark with it and I use it to cook with. Mostly stir fries and curries.

I don't believe I have any ill effects from consuming it. But I also don't think that it is some super food (for me) as I don't really feel any different when I do eat it.

The best advice I can give is you are a wls surgery patient first and lc'er second. Following your surgeon's or treatment centers plan on how you should eat for life ensures your best success.

I know I probably sound like a broken record but I'm getting really frustrated.

I some times want to eat of plan but I don't. I sometimes go to bed a bit hungry, I've been making sure I'm moving my body but the scale, lately, just doesn't want to register a loss.

Seriously I still have lots to lose so losing an average of a lb a week is lame-o!

I know I need my thyroid meds adjusted but at this point I don't even feel hopeful that it will help. I'm seeing my doc Saturday morning.

I'm also getting tired of protein again. I just think what the hell does it matter since I'm not getting the results I want anyway.

Feel free to ignore this post as I know I'm whining. I just wanted to vent.

You also could be inhibiting your body's conversion of T4 into T3 by eating only 20 carbs. The Broda Barnes Foundation has documented scientific studes showing that hypothyroid patients who are medicated and lower their carbs under 30g can slow this process down. Read the posts in the Thyroid Forum about this-nonstickpam advises newbies to lc and are hypothyroid to check out Protein Power. Dieting itself can lower thyroid function in a healthy individual not just a thyroid patient. I will see if I can find some links to threads about this for you. Everyone is different but I did not thrive, feel well or lose weight on severely lowered carbs. As soon as my meds were optimized and I upped my carbs to a level that was good for me I felt great and finally started losing weight again.

I eat 20-50 a day but because I have PCOS I try to stay under 30 most days. My eating habits the last few weeks haven't been the greatest though as I have been going back and forth in my eating.

Coconut oil never did anything for me aside from adding calories.
I use coconut oil on my face now. Couldn't let it go to waste.

Have you tried switching up your foods? Sometimes a change is what the body needs.

I am not a protein fan right now either. I try to eat it but

lisabinil thank you so much for your thoughts and comments. I really do appreciate your insight. I'm not really a pessimistic person but sometimes I just feel so damn lost.

I will read the link you have provided. I guess I'm also scared of raising my carbs and getting hungry. Not that I can eat a lot at at time but I don't want to undo all the hard work I have done.

I think too I need to stop comparing myself to others. It's when I go to OH and I read of people losing more than I have in half the time. I start to have a pity party and really that is so not constructive! But I am happy for everyone who is successful and I want everyone to succeed!

Thanks again!

I actually haven't. I try to vary the food I eat but right now the only thing I want is food I can not have.

Congrats on your losses! The gas pains plain and simply SUCK. LOL The only thing that really helps is walking, at least for me. Walk,walk,walk...They suggested I walk 4-6 min 6 times per day. I hope it gets better soon...

hi sancie.... monkee, emerald and i all went to mexico for the sleeve. good research is critical. i would recommend dr. aceves and dr. joya. they are the best in mx imo. dr. alvarez is also very good, but he has been known to overbook this past year and also has a facility which is not a true hospital by american standards. he's also a bit pompus but that may not bother you. he would be my third choice if i were to do it again in mx.

how well did you research this doctor? you really need to be thurough. i am not implying this choice is a bad one. just that mexico works differently than the u.s. ... i highly suggest delving into info at obesity help.

I had surgery (VSG) in Mexico with Dr. Aceves and was very pleased with the surgery. Their level of treatment was actually above what I had expected. I was pleasantly surprised. Like Mary mentioned, you have to do a lot of research. Not all surgeons are the same in Mexico. Some of the horror stories that you read ARE true. There are doctors who ship you to a hotel room to recover and cut corners during the procedure and are not very sanitary. Keep in mind that what you consider a hospital is not the same in Mexico. That doesn't mean that all surgeons and hospitals are the same. The hospital where I had my surgery is a real hospital with in-house lab and emergency dept. My surgeon was/is highly qualified and had impressive credentials which is part of why I chose him. I considered other surgeons but in the end he is the one I felt comfortable with.

I do not regret my decision to have surgery over the border given the circumstances of not having insurance coverage for a VSG and having to pay for the surgery out of pocket. However, have I had coverage for a VSG I would have chosen a surgeon in the USA. The number of qualified surgeons with experience in VSG in the USA is limited but there were a few that I liked and would have selected from. Mexico was great for the actual surgery but it lacks post-care. With my surgeons office you're given the option to come back for your check-up's with labs and imaging done. You also have access to the after care specialist who keeps communication with the nutritionist and surgeon. They are quick to respond and assist you. It lacks group support and doesn't address the psychological of WLS or offer any resources. With surgeons in the USA they normally have in-house support groups and counseling. I didn't think that it was necessary at the time when I was making my decision to have surgery but I do think that its important now that I am 9 months post-op.

I am not trying to discourage anyone from having surgery in Mexico as my experience was a good one but if you plan to go over the border it would be good idea to line up some resources close to home. Look up support groups and one-on-one counseling. Maybe even a doctor/surgeon who is willing to monitor your after care.

I am officially 9 months post op today!
This month has been a ride. I've struggled and have gone up and down. That is no surprise I am sure since I have been very vocal (online) about it on this thread. I am ending the month at +/- 0 pounds. I am exactly where I was this time last month. Those are not the results that I wanted but am thankful that I can at least end the month without a gain. I'll take it any day all things considered.
