I live in NY and my doctor is in FL...up until a week ago, I was in Africa for the past 2 years, so I haven't actually had my in person consult yet! I lost about 135lbs, but I never had a huge amount of overhanging skin, so I don't think they will take off a huge amount of weight. I am thinking maybe 5lbs?

I'm...well right now to be honest, I've only been home a week, my hubby has had probably 7 job interviews and 6 job offers, is on his last interview today (1.5 hours away) so we have been so crazy with getting acclimated to the area, job hunting, and now apartment hunting in a couple different cities that I haven't even had a chance to THINK about being scared or nervous LOL. PLUS we go camping on Thursday til Monday, then Tuesday I wake up, fly to Florida and have surgery on Wednesday!!

I AM excited, I realize that every time I look in the mirror and lift my skin up. Or stuff my boobs into my bra lol. I've been taking lots of vitamins, iron, and protein shakes to prep...and have everything packed and ready to go!

Feeling great 3 days post op. They took off 13-15 lbs and 3 liters when they did liposuction. Pain pills are doing their job quite well. I can get in and out of bed on my own. Lots of bruising and the incisions are gross right now but once they fade and the swelling goes down I know it'll look great!

I don't feel like talking about it yet, as I have too much other stuff to deal with right now, but they declined me. I got the letter 1 day before I left for my week long trip to Kansas for my friends wedding..... I didn't want to tell anyone because I didn't want people asking about it on my trip.

Don't get discouraged. Everything happens for a reason but works itself out in the end. This is different but I was declined for my medical loan to cover my VSG. I felt bummed for a day but I still kept trying and in the end I paid for it in cash. I am glad that it worked out that way because I do not have to worry about payments now. I didn't have the money at the time to cover my surgery but when you really want something you find a way and make it happen.

Keep trying. If your insurance denied you, appeal it.
Don't give up on it.

Happy to hear that your recovery is going smoothly. Wow on the 13-15 pounds. I was thinking maybe 8-10 pounds. I bet you'll look amazing after. You already looked pretty good before surgery.

CJ.. I was denied twice.. Third times the charm!!! Keep appealing it and they will eventually allow you to do it. Make sure you have a letter from your primary doctor, your surgeon, any specialist you have seen that agrees that you need this surgery.. Write a heartfelt letter yourself.. Take pictures of rashes and open wounds (especially if they are bleeding!).. I am sure you have done this but make copies upon copies.. bug the heck out of them.. It took me a year to get mine approved.. Don't get depressed.. You obviously need this surgery hun so if you keep trying it will find its way to someones desk that will help push it through.. You might even want to call the insurance company and ask them specifically why you were denied (mine was denied because "it didn't affect my every day life") and what would make it so it can be approved... My letter helped explain to them what I went through every day.. They said it helped.. I know they had to code the surgery differently to get mine approved also so it might just be that they need a different code.. There are codes for cosmetic surgery and codes for neccessary surgery..

If you need any help just let me know!!!

Thank you everyone for sharing!!! I just want to subscribe to this thread as I will want to have the surgery IF it is covered by insurance.. I have a question though.. does anyone know what the insurance guidelines generally are for skin removal? A certain amount of lbs? inches? I will be losing about 90 lbs.. is that enough? Does insurance only cover stomach or will they do breasts, arms, legs, rear etc?

It is very hard to get insurance coverage for any of it......
I have lost 247 lbs and have a lot of excess skin and having lots of problems and currently fighting with insurance to get just my lower tummy approved. They won't cover anything on the upper tummy at all. You have to have documented proof from your doctor of ongoing rashes and infections or bleeding and the excess skin has to hang down enough to cover your bikini area and make it hard to walk or do normal day activities and get infections and rashes and make your life hell.

Then you gotta stand naked for the doctor to take pics so the insurance company can look at them and tell you that they still didn't see an infection even though they saw redness. They need proof of how long it has been red. So start going to your doctor and getting that stuff documented now as soon as it starts bugging you.

They will sometimes cover a breast reduction, but not a breast lift. So you have to have so much breast tissue removed at the same time for any insurance coverage.

Read my blog, there is a "labels" link with the word "Surgery" and read the posts on this thread. Several people have gone into detail about their coverage. But just for an example I have to pay 8k out of pocket for my upper tummy, ab area and the only part the insurance would even remotely consider covering is 6k for my lower tummy. My thighs need 8k worth of work done too and at that point I stopped asking how much things were going to cost and didn't ask about my arms, but probably about 7/8k there too.

I've lost 249 lbs, lowered my body fat by 36% and lowered my resting heart rate from 110 to 65 beats per minute. I was told that I'd never be able to go to the gym again after an auto accident. I've been back at the gym since Sept. 2009 and completed my first official 5k on 9/25/10. I have PCOS and recently stopped eating Soy.

That's crazy! I think once you start to get infections/rashes/bleeding they should cover it. Its not even cosmetic anymore. It's medical.
