major hair loss

I'm posting this for my ds who had gbs 4 months ago. She's lost about 70 lbs so far but now is losing hair, lots of hair and its very dull and greasy looking. She had very thin fine hair to begin with but now its scary thin! I know hair loss is a side effect but have you found anything that helps?

Hi there!

When I was about six months out I started having hair loss too. There were a few things that turned it around for me however. The biggest one is to up your protein consumption. Whether it be from protein drinks or the food you eat, the more protein you have, the better it is for your hair. I was taking in around 120 grams of protein a day and my hair stopped falling out and started regrowing when I did that. There is a supplement called Biotin that is a big help, and a shampoo/conditioner called Nioxin that gives good results. I truly think the increase in protein is what helped and my doctor agrees. Good luck!

150% agree w/Mysstwalker, I take 6000 mcg of Biotin, and did up my protein and my fine hair is not falling out like it used to. Now I've been taking/doing this for several years, takes sometime, but it worked for me and I know alot of others, hugs to your sister and you, Good Luck

I'm losing hair too and am super depressed about it. Since I've had trouble tolerating shakes in the past I was happy to see a new product that uses only organic ingredients and milk whey from grass fed cows.
I just ordered it today.

Here's an article on why all whey proteins are not created equal Product Review

And here's the product itself
called
Miracle Whey

I'll post about my progress.

And I'll try the Nioxin!
Thanks for the suggestion!

She needs to be documenting what she eats, I do day by day. I am a RN so not ignorant of nutritional process, I am six months out from RNY and was not taking enough calcium / and protein, very, very important. Does she have a Nutritionist connected with Bariatric Surgeon ?

She should consult with them too, also Vitamin D and a sublingual B Complex are important.

I was sloppy with that a few months ago to my own detriment but have turned it around. Encourage her to document so she has a written record and any lacks will be seen to help her improve.

Blessings,

Patty

We keep talking about what she eats. I get so upset with her, instead of grabbing a protein shake she'll reach for the chips eat a few then complain shes full. Shes going to her doc for a check up today hopefully he will talk to her too about the importance of making good choices.

Several things come to mind.

Some hair loss is expected because our bodies are going through such a huge adjustment.

But, is she taking her recommended dosages of calcium? And, multi vitamins? Weight loss surgery patients have absorption issues meaning that we do not absorb all of the nutrients, protein, vitamins, calcium, etc etc that we take in by way of food. And, we need to take supplements several times of day (not all at once, as we won't absorb it all). People, even further out from their surgery, who do not continue this regimen will lose hair, lose bone density, all sorts of problems...

Is she getting in enough protein? While many say to have 60-80, keep in mind that we don't absorb all of that either. And, the higher the protein (I've seen suggestions of 80-100), that will help many issues, including weight loss.

Also, yes the biotin will help.

She would be well served to find a hairdresser that can help assist by cutting her hair in a style that will make her hair look thicker. And, the shampoo that was mentioned causes the hair to look thick too. I also used a root lifter, that can help when styling.

I know that she is probably very upset by this. I remember when it happened to me and I wanted to cry every single day... but, it grew back and looks healthy.

I've been very consistent about my vitamins/supplements and never experienced any hair loss. I know everyone is different, but I would really encourage her to take her vitamins EVERY day. BTW, I'm 17 months post-op.
