"<Dr. Simpson> Carbonation does not stretch the pouch as long as you can burp or pass gas the other way. But what carbonation does is that food in the pouch will be forced out of the pouch by carbonation and you will then feel hungry. So carbonation can lead to feeling hungry sooner than you should. I have operated on hundreds, if not thousands of patients and many of them drink lots and lots of carbonated beverages -- sometimes they come to my office with cups that are the size of my aquarium and when I see their stomach, they are all pretty much the normal size. So, that is a myth but carbonated beverages should be avoided because of what they can do to your sense of satiety. Good luck."

Rant ON:[/COLOR]

IMO, some Doctors/Nutritionists/Dieticians treat their obese patients like children, so even when they know something like this is a myth, they will repeat it if they think it is in your "best interest" to abstain from the behavior. The issue in this case is drinking while eating, or drinking diet sodas (which have shown in some research to be bad for weightloss,) not carbonation per se.

Really just irks me if they are that patronizing, or makes me think they are stupid, if they really believe the line they are selling. Either way, they lose a hunk of credibility with me. . . .

I just popped over here after seeing Sleepy One get hammered on the main low-carb board. Why can't people understand that, for some of us, it's the combination of WLS and low-carb that gets us where we want to be? Sheesh!

I guess you are alway going to have people think that if they can do it everyone can... I have been doing low carb for years... and also have tried every diet there is... I did lose, but it would always stop after losing about 50 lbs... and then it would be a struggle... I put off surgery until I started to having alot of health issues.... its nto about vanity to me... I want my health back and I am running out of time.....

she needs to come over here for support or if she is thinking about having surgery....

~sighs~

I'm trying to figure out how to make it work and I'm guessing that with the need for protein shakes in the morning, it just won't. At least none of the "standard" WOEs.

Does anyone do the Atkins '72 WOE who can't eat solids for breakfast?

Is there a reason you can't do protein shake breakfast on Atkins 72? Does the program forbid whey protein during induction or something? DANDR 2002 allows whey protein. . . .

Jake glad to see you are posting, didn't know if you ever found us after june thread..... I think everyone goes thur being excited and being scared too... I know I did..... the only comfort I got was from know my surgeon was one of the best.... but even he told me there could be complication.....

do everything your surgeons says.... my surgeon gave me a big notebook that told everything that happens before, during and after...this was a big help..... I have all my diets in that book... what I should eat before, after diets are in phase 1, phase2, phase 3 and then a regular diet.... I am now at phase 3..
We are all here for you....

Yesterday at church someone asked my mother in law if she has lost so more weight, and how she was doing it.... she said she not eating much.... and then commented she was doing it the hard way..... boy I felt that jab..... it amazes me that people think this is the easy way out.... this is one of the hardest things I have ever did for myself.... Yes I am losing weight better then when I was eating nothing to lose weight, but, my whole life has been change..I am having to think everything out, watch what I am eating, how much I am eating... trying to remember to chew my food.... I know I am only 3 weeks out... and I am new at this... but this is no way the easy way out......

if you can't click on the link.. go to my "myspace"

I hit a new low 176!!!!

Welcome to all the newbies... I am so excited to see this thread muddle on in this forum. Some people have the attack gene in their DNA.. so no matter if its WLS or to use Splenda.. they will be negative. I hope the person slammed finds us....

There are several of us on this thread who've been around this board for YEARS longer than those who are doing the slamming...... I think those negative posters take on newer members because they can....... OK.. I'll get off my soapbox.

I am so proud of the way you have lost this weight. Even though you have the band you have to stay on a diet and you have done it.

Love you.

Banded and Getting Back on Track

Hey Guys,
Sorry for not posting more often. I got banded on July 11, 2008. I was not prepared for the pain associated with gas, the initial loss of taste, and slight depression. My doctor has me on a 3 week liquid diet - post operation, and I hated everything allowed. Nothing tasted the same. I slowly blew it one way or the other the first week. Mentally, I am getting back to normal now. The gas pain is gone, and my taste buds have return. Needless to say, I am back to work, and everyone is asking how much weight did I lose during my first week, and I had to be honest and say none. When I left the hospital, I was 6 pounds heavier than when I entered, and it took about 4 to 5 days for me to lose that water. I was definitely partly my fault. I wasn't moving like I needed to, but I couldn't move as much due to the gas pain. I am afraid that I've stretched my band. Is this possible so soon? I kinda feel it now. I have gone back to my liquids now that I can stand the taste again. Any feed back will be appreciated - rusheda@aol.com.
Thanks,
Rusheda

Hi again,

I would do the mix-it-yourself shakes, but my surgeon had a coniption fit when I asked. They are on my NEVER list of things - there aren't many, but this is a biggie.

I'm planning on starting Atkins '72 since I need to kick my metabolism in the tookis. I got down to <700 cals and you can guess what my body did in response.

I'm considering trying the egg creams on the main board, since I think they would work and would give a fair amount of protein and I could stomach them early in the morning.

I appreciate your help and support.

It's hard doing this alone.

If you like the egg creams then go for it!

Also, if you like LC yogurts you could go that route too......

Cottage Cheese and blueberries with splenda....

for me....... I don't really "do breakfast"........ I try to drink a glass of milk (or carb countdown milk if I can find it) to jump start my metabolism.

Today for instance:

B: 1 glass of milk
coffee with SF creamer

L: Tuna Lunch on the go kit

Thats it so far,

I have pork steak in the crock pot at home for dinner.

Congratulation on your banding.... As for the gas its normal...walking it the best for it... so walk as often as you can... also being up in weight is also normal... you have to remember after surgery you will have inflamation, swelling, so don't worry about the weight it will eventually come down.... from what I have heard they don't want you to stress over losing weight, give you band time to heal... when you go back to the doctor he will discuss how you feel are you hungry all the time... and then he will give you a fill... for a few days you might have to go back to full liquids to get use to your band fill..... Rusheda just remember you have had surgery.....give yourself some times.... the tool works... but you have to be patient.... hand in there

Tracy congralations on your new low... and I think its great your mom supports you the way she does.... I know it made you feel good... KUTGW

wen have you already had the lap band, sorry I can't remember...are you going to support meeting? I highly recommend support meeting... you can find support, great ideas and find out how everyone else is copling with being banding.... you could check with your doctor office and they should be able to direct you to one

Hey Mysti I will be so glad when I am able to start doing some things.... about 3 more weeks to go and thing will get back to normal.... my house needs some TLC and I am ready to tackle it... me...so glad you are feeling better

I am going out of town tomorrow will be gone till friday.... it will be interesting to see how I handle my eating while I am gone.... I ate the chicken meat out of a chicken wing piece, not the drummy but the other piece and ate alittle mashed potatoes w/ gravy.... it was so good..... I am starting to feel stronger everyday... I was begining to wonder if I would ever feel better..... my doctor is not worried about what I am eating.... he told me to do what I can, try to get in as much protein as I can and as much fluid... and that 3 to 4 bites of food is ok... that it will get better as I heal.... not really sure how much I have lost since last week, scales are all messed up.... so I guess I will wait and weigh whenI go back to the doctor in september......

hope everyone has a wonderful week.... I will chek back in friday or saturday......

Exercise Update
Exercise for me has been cutting the grass 30 minutes with a push mower(today)...
School supplies shopping for about 2 hours (yesterday)...
Church (Sunday)...I walk about 1/2 a mile every Sunday...then I went out and played basketball and threw the football with my kiddo's.

I LOVE being more active now. We're going swimming today, so I'll get exercise swimming laps.

Water's been 70 plus oz. a day.
Food's been good. I haven't been using Fitday though. I really have to take the time to do that. I'll go there and enter today's info right now.
Still cleaning my house everyday.

I'm really doing great! I apologize for not being able to read everyone's posts right now. I'm just trying to take advantage of my recent energy surge. LOL I'll be posting much more in a few weeks when the kiddo's go back to school.

Take care everyone!

Congrats on the band.

I didn't loose anything my first week and I had to wait 6 weeks before I was filled.

Take the time to get to know your body and the band. Liquids suck, but the time lets you heal.

It will get better

I'm totally confused.

You've had Lapband surgery, right? Recently?

Why would your surgeon object to a protein shake but approve an egg cream? They are both liquid calories with lots of protein in them. Now, I could perhaps understand if he had a philosophy of no liquid supplementation because of liquid calories being too easy to overdo, but wouldn't that apply to an egg cream as well?

Did you ask WHY? no protein shakes? Perhaps he thought you meant the high calorie/high carb shakes the body builders use? If he assumed this and is unfamiliar with all the bariatric-appropriate low cal/low carb shake powders on the market, then he is a very uninformed weightloss surgeon Hope for your sake that's not the case!

I had the surgery in December 2006.

I followed his "diet plan" and prompty put my metabolism in the toilet. For a patient at 300 pounds, he recommeded no more than 800 calories, 250 pounds no more than 700 calories, 200 pounds no more than 600 calories.

If I had to do it again, I would NEVER have chosen him, but I'm stuck with the decision and finding a new surgeon who will take over fills when the original surgeon is still in town isn't happening - I've spoken to about 20 different practices. My decision to have surgery was a knee jerk reaction to seeing someome I loved, who was over 350 lbs, have a stroke and loose mobility.

He doesn't object to pre-made protein shakes but thinks that ready-to-drink is fine. His rational was that if it's a mix, you run the risk of not mixing it enough and will have to be scoped to remove the "clog" of protein powder. I tried to argue and it just didn't work. And I haven't found a r-t-d that tastes very appealing.

I found this out AFTER I'd had the surgery - oy vey.

The "support group" his office has is full of people who thrive on the 700 cals a day - my metabolism slowed to a crashing halt. And they all say that they do fine on the canned drinks. Apparently they don't have very sensitive taste buds - the first taste is okay, it's the ending whang that gets me every time.

Oh, and he has now changed his practice so he focuses on bypass and vertical sleeves as well as the lap band...which is no big deal OTHER THAN THE FACT that he bashed both those procedures in the lap band seminar.

About a week ago, I started forcing myself to add calories to throw myself back into a semi-normal metabolism so when I hit induction, I would have a something that worked. And it has - 1 day of induction and down 1.2 pounds.

Hi all,

Hope everyone's doing well.

Rusheda, I'm sorry you're going through a rough time. It's not possible to stretch the band, but it's possible to do things to damage your pouch or cause the band to slip. It's rare, but it happens, and there's no way for any of us to tell you whether you've caused any damage. Again, it's unlikely, but only your doctor can determine it. The only thing you can do is force yourself to get on track and follow the rules. The early band rules are meant to give your body time to heal. If you had an infection and your doctor gave you antibiotics and told you that unless you took them according to his direction you could get seriously ill, you'd listen to him, right? Well, try to make yourself look at the first few weeks as a course of antibiotics that you just have to deal with in order to make sure you don't end up worse off later on. It sucks, and it's hard, but you have to do it.

Neeta, Jake, and anyone else who's starting the process--congratulations on taking this step!

Had my fourth fill this morning. I'm at pretty good restriction, but I knew I'd be needing something soon because I've lost almost 20 pounds since my last fill and I've noticed that I can eat more at once than I think I should. So she gave me just .1 cc, putting me at 3.6 cc in my 5 cc band. As of this morning I'm down to 204.4, and Onederland is so close it's almost a little scary.

OH and I have a band baby to announce!
Family member (we'll call him Betty) had his band placed in Mexico with Dr. Ortiz 7/17/08, shown here two days post op and a flight later. He is doing great... Don't freak out he also had major surgery LAST year for Colon CancerI look horrible because we were in the middle of yard work and outside chores when he called needing a pep talk... but you get the idea!
