Congratulations!! It really helps to hear the success stories. I have not been asked to do anything other than fast for 7 hours prior to my arrival. The Dr. has done over 3500 of these surgeries so I hope he knows what he is doing..

I went ahead and started dieting yesterday so I guess I am on my farewell to food tour also

Congratulation Tracy for being in the 170's this morning... here come the 160's

Shelly I was on a 1,000 calorie diet, that was high protein, low fat, low carb, no sugar...this was suppose to shrink my liver to make the surgery go better...... the day i had my surgery after it was over with, the first thing I asked my doctor was how big was my liver... he said it was medium.... and it was out of the way for surgery....I ate clean for 3 1/2 weeks before surgery....and the day before I was on clean liquids and had to take a laxative to clean me out at noon that day....

Thanks for that info. I want to have every advantage going into this!

Is anyone drinking alcohol? Does it affect you differently post surgery?
I understand carbonation can be rough.

I think I remember in support group that alcohol in the begining can get you drunk faster... and with my doctor carbonation is not aloud after surgery.... the bubbles in the carbonation can stretch your pouch.... so he said no carbonation

It is advised not to drink with an RNY-less digestive acids in the stomach and the alcohol hits your liver in a big rush. You definitely get drunker and sicker with much less alcohol after an RNY. As for carbonated drinks I am 8 years out and have no problem with them now. The carbonation can cause unbelievably painful gas right after surgery and drinking out of a straw was not recommended after my surgery either as you can swallow a lot of air and end up with painful gas problems too.

Blessed Sunday Everyone!

Rusheda I hope u had a good surgery outcome!!!!

I'm still maintaining my weight loss.......since I'm healing I really can't lose as per my doctor. I visit with him tomorrow..I'm having some drainage issues again grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
More fluid is draining from my incision rather than my drainage tube. I'm so sick of this

On another note...my energy level is really good.....too bad I can't UTILIZE it...I can't do anything except stand and lay down...even sitting is difficult..

OK enough whinning. I'll just be happy when this is all over with and I can get my LIFE back

'Morning everyone! I've got a million things to do today, but wanted to let you know that I'm feeling stronger and stronger each day. I'm 8 weeks post-op today and I actually feel almost normal again!

I've got to clean out part of my garage today. I'm still de-cluttering my house. My goodness I have a lot of crap in here! I'll be making a big trip to Goodwill soon. LOL

Have a great day everyone! I'll check in later today.

Hi everyone! I'm back at work today for the first day. Funny but it seems I have no extra time at home to get on-line and I have to come to work to do it! Things are going well. I'm on mushies this week. I had bananas and ravioli for lunch. The ravioli was really easy to mush up and about the only option at CVS I could find. I think I ate too much though because I feel bloated. The strange thing is, I weighed exactly this am what I did on surgery day but I've lost 2 pants sizes and my wedding rings are too big! Weird. Anyway, glad to see that everyone is doing so well! I need to go back through and read all your posts.

Good morning all!

I am attending a dr appointment with my mom, stepdad, and sis today in relation to her breast issue..... ( so this means that I am swelled up tighter than a 3 day tick)

I've had a glass of milk so far, and I brought those tuna lunch kits to put in my work stash of food! LOL

Booze affects RNY people different than Bandsters........ I have several RL friends that are RNY..... each one says that booze hits them hard and fast, but they also sober up fast (because it hits and leaves the system like gangbusters)

FOR ME: its not quite the same, but due to the LACK OF FOOD TO SOAK UP the alcohol fewer/weaker drinks is best.......

My doc gives back soda after 6 weeks, but it is true that SOMETIMES the bubbles in the carbonation make me burp a lot....... which is why some people drink flat pop.....

Have a great day!

Hi everyone,

I've really ramped up the exercise for the last week, and as a result the scale isn't moving. I know, intellectually, why this happens and that it pays off in the long run, yada yada yada. But it's really frustrating to see the scale bounce back up to 210 and stay there for several days, when I was so thrilled about finally getting to 209 and the 50-pound mark. Plus I'm really sore (ab and upper body workout last night), so I'm cranky.

As to the soda/alcohol issue, I have soda or carbonated beverages occasionally--like maybe once every few weeks. I've heard over and over that carbonation can stretch your pouch and have looked for evidence to back that up but haven't found anything. The closest I've come was reading that when banding/RNY was being developed there was a theory that carbonation could have that effect, but there's been no evidence to support it. If anyone has found anything different, please let me know.

Alcohol defininitely affects me more quickly than it used to, but that's probably at least partially due to the fact that I didn't have a drink of any kind for about a month before surgery and about 4 months after. One glass of wine makes me very pleasantly tipsy (and two would probably put me on the floor), which the bf likes because between that and ordering just an appetizer when we go out, I'm now a very cheap date!

Tracy, I hope everything is going well with your mom.

Mel~ You have been in my prayers.

Mysti~ Is there a chance you could make a trip to Ohio?? My garage looks like a bunch of pigs have made it their home and I sure could use your help

Tracy~ Keep us posted on your mom. She is in my prayers.

Well, I turned 40 on Saturday. My DH had a very nice party for me. The one gift I really wanted I didn't get...... my surgery date. Isn't it strange that this process totally consumes you life?!? I just want my life back.

NOT CANCER!!!!!!

They don’t know exactly what it is, but between the Surgeon and the Pathologist they found NO evidence of malignant tumors and NO evidence of Inflammatory Breast Cancer.

The PRAYERS WORKED!

She gets her stitches out next week and then she will have yet another doctor look at her.

Funny side note: While we were in the room, the doc excused himself while she dressed, and she was joking about how that side of her body was a wreck… (Talking about her prior surgeries, scars, radiation.. and then my step dad remembered that she even had SHINGLES on that side of her body)

When the doc returned she mentioned the Shingles and he was amazed that he had never heard that particular piece of her medical history, said it was VERY interesting and that he would note it in her file and make sure that it got passed on to the other doctors who would be treating her. (So for all we know this event is related to the shingles family!)

I can not begin to thank everyone for the continued prayers and good thoughts.

The entire MOTHER HOUSE OF Sisters is praying for her, and all of you and all I can say is that God answered them.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you.

Tracy - That's awesome news! God is good.

I'm taking my kid's to a pool today. It's supposed to be 95 degrees and since we don't have an air-conditioner, we'll be swimming.

Everything's going well for me. I'm down another pound today...so I've lost 43 so far. Getting my water in has been easy since it's been so hot here.

Take care everyone...and have a great day!

Hmm have never heard of carbonation stretching the pouch-painful gas due to the swallowing of air is the only complication I've ever been informed of.

Thanks, Lisa. That makes sense.

Oh, Tracy, what wonderful news! You must all be over the moon right now.

Mysti, you're doing great!

I'm down a little over a pound today, which is awesome since it's been over a week with no scale movement. I'm solidly below 209, so I'm claiming 50 pounds lost and I'm not giving them back!

The next little while is going to be a challenge for me, I think. I got laid off yesterday and have about 6 weeks' worth of expenses in savings, so if I don't find a new job pretty quickly I'm going to be in serious trouble. My first instinct when I got the call was to head for the fridge, and thank goodness I don't have anything in my house that I could binge on. As I stood there with the fridge door open, I realized what I was doing and forced myself to close it and get some water. It was a victory, albeit a small one because I'm not sure I could have done it if I'd had ice cream or potato chips or anything else like that around.

Hope you're all doing well.

Tracy thats wonderful news about your mom.... Yes God is good... My uncle was told back a few months ago he has a spot on his lungs and they have did several biospy and found not evidents of cancer, they still think its cancer...... we have been praying since it all begin.... I really believe God has healed him.... Yes God is good

Jenny WTG for being down..... My stupied scales have good nuts and I don't know what I weight... it said this morning 299.... normally this should be and exciting number... I haven't been 299 in years..... but I know its got to be wrong..... dh says I lost more weight then I think I have... Oh well... I go to the doctor this afternoon will find out for sure.....

Mysti Wtg on being down another pound.... I brought me some wendys chili yesterday.... I was able to eat a few bites.... good to have something different....

Nancy Happy belated birthday.... so sorry you didn't get your date for it.... hopefully you will get it soon...

Lisa, my nurtritionist said the carbonation stretches the pouch .... we were told not to drink them.... Now my support leader always has a soda with her, but she is 5 years out now.... I don't really care for diet soda's.... so if I can't have the real thing I will drink water or something else sugar free.....

Your pouch has two openings-up your esophagus and out your stoma so the gas from carbonation passes out either way-burps or gas so not much stretching is going on but it can be painful. This is one of the WLS myths and always follow your docs advice.

"<Dr. Simpson> Carbonation does not stretch the pouch as long as you can burp or pass gas the other way. But what carbonation does is that food in the pouch will be forced out of the pouch by carbonation and you will then feel hungry. So carbonation can lead to feeling hungry sooner than you should. I have operated on hundreds, if not thousands of patients and many of them drink lots and lots of carbonated beverages -- sometimes they come to my office with cups that are the size of my aquarium and when I see their stomach, they are all pretty much the normal size. So, that is a myth but carbonated beverages should be avoided because of what they can do to your sense of satiety. Good luck."

Thanks for the B-day wishes girls.

Tracy~PRAISE GOD NO CANCER!!!! I know your family is jumpin' for joy.

Lisab~ thanks for that quote from your surgeon. I've heard both sides of this and that helped. My surgeon suggests no carbonation for 6 months. He said that allows time for your pouch to heal totally.

Jenny~ 50lbs is awesome!

Mysti~ My DD and I take her babies to the pool once a week and they love it. We pack a lunch and goodies and they act like its the greatest thing. Great memories

Mycattaz~ thanks for the encouraging words. I know my day will come, I just want it to come yesterday!!! BTW, I LOVE Wendys chili.

G'morning everyone! Just a quick check-in. I had a blast at the pool yesterday. That's the first time in a looong time that I wore a bathing suit out in public. LOL I haven't been out much in the sun this summer so I bought some 50 spf sunscreen on the way. LOL Two hours in the sun at this altitude (7000') - I would've been fried. But I didn't get burned at all. I kept reapplying it after I'd get out of the pool. You know you're getting old when you put spf 50 on your body. I have enough "sun spots and wrinkles" on my body...thank you very much. Years of not listening to my Mom when she would say, "You need to take care of your face now while you're young. Or it will catch up with you some day". Live and learn.

b-a few oz. of coffee, pro-nut butter
l-bbq chicken, salad
d-hmmm, haven't decided yet
s-s/f fudgesicle

water - 64 oz. plus other fluids
exercise - walk on tready 20 minutes
house - keep decluttering/cleaning...one space at a time
fitday - record all my food/fluid intake

Hi everyone

Can I poke my head in?

I had surgery in Dec '06, and have not taken care of business like I should have, so I'm back to a safe low carb diet and could really use the encouragement.

Overall, I've done well, but not as well as my surgeon would like. I started at 311 the day of surgery, and I'm down to 247.
