All the IE people are inspiring me. Since it's an up day, and I had no plan already in place, I took a long time to decide that what I really wanted for lunch was a slice of pizza. I took my time, checked in on pretty much every bite, but even after I finished, I still felt "empty." I waited about 30 minutes and then got one sugar free chocolate. It's been several hours now, and instead of frantically checking the clock and my calorie list to see when I can have a snack, I've just been busy and happy.

I can feel my stomach emptying, but it's the normal feeling and a good one. Not the insistent urge to fill it back up type of feeling.

I could see this being something I could practice on up days, where I feel freer to make a mistake. Yesterday, I just practiced feeling the food going in and taking up space. It was interesting.

Got a large lunch today--sandwich (4 oz roast beef, 1 oz cheese, tomato, light mayo and mustard on rye) and baked chips. Everything divided in half. Resolved to stop when just full. And I did. But an hour later, I was gasping for food. What? Ate all the rest of it, including the 100-calorie bag of cookies from my drawer. Now I feel only a tiny bit over the full line, not uncomfortable. I keep wondering if this is okay. I can only really experience this on up days because I seldom get even close to full on down days. I wonder if my full is different from other people's.

I have days like that (today!) and other days where I'm just not that interested in food. I think our appetites naturally ebb and flow. With time, maybe you'll see a pattern.

That doesn't actually sound like all that much food, especially if everything halved. Or am I just a big pig??? I think I am learning that my head is defining how much food I "should" have to feel satisfied, but that I actually need more than that. Maybe you're doing the same thing?

Thanks, Dawn and Carol--
Maybe I am still looking at my food "objectively" as in that was almost 500 calories, so I "should" not want it all at once. I have this way of thinking about my body--that my stomach isn't any bigger when I'm hungry as when I'm not. If it's empty, it's empty, and can only hold a certain amount. If it's not empty, I don't need to put anything in it. Does that at all make sense?!?!

It was pretty empty yesterday, and half of one of those sandwiches didn't fill me up. But I know that normally, it does. So, I am somehow thrown by that.

Random musing du jour:

Appetite vs hunger.
Must think about that.
Do I use them interchangeably? Probably shouldn't.
Appetite usually trumps hunger, but it should be the other way 'round.
(Trying to erase the word "should" from my vocabulary. I use it to shame myself.)

So, yesterday.
I ate a $#*^ton on Saturday evening. I had a great lunch on Saturday. Ordered exactly what I wanted, ate about 3/4 - 7/8 of it. No problem leaving the rest. Then Saturday night, I ordered a large dinner, ate every bite and then went for ice cream. What? I checked a few times throughout dinner but never fell satisfied or full. Halfway through the ice cream, I felt it. But I finished it anyway. OMG.

Sunday, I wasn't hungry until about 4 pm, so no problem there. I ate enough to be quite satisfied, but not full. Then, even though I got hungry later, I forced myself not to eat anything, because it was supposed to be a down day. I felt all messed up.

Today I have a menu plan, but have already altered it a bit, which is no big deal. I ate some soup for lunch, still felt a little peckish, grabbed a few (okay, yes, I counted them because down day) little pretzel sticks and half way through the third stick of ten, I felt that little click. done. Whew. I actually feel happy that I have 7 more pretzels for later.

Is this IE or anorexic chic? I cannot tell.

What's kind of comforting about hearing lots of us are having these little "feasts" while trying to IE is that I think we're getting past some of our head issues. Maybe we have to go through these little splurges and deal with it calmly to release ourselves of it happening so often going forward? I don't know. Whatever it is, it obviously is working for you because you were so calm about food Sunday. Love it!

Nervously noshed about 400 carby cals before 10:00 am. Nervous because it's an up day and I am afraid I'll eat too much. How stupidly ironic is that?

Woke up HUNGRY. Ate most of a Kind bar with my tea at 8:30; stopped when full. Had a whole package of Belvita bars at work with coffee at 9:30. Ate them slowly and enjoyed them, but knew I wasn't hungry enough to warrant eating them. Feel almost no fuller now than when I started them. Because I wasn't hungry to begin with. I feel like an UP day broken record! It's okay, I mean, I'm not distraught or anything. But wow.

Keeping that in mind. Because realistically, this is the only form of "maintenance" I can see myself doing long-term.

My experiments with this ten years ago didn't get me very far, but I had no support. I appreciate all of you very much.

Is it possible that learning how not to diet is like getting out from a cult? Finding out something you so devoutly believed was just wrong. And all these other people never even got fooled.

Down day here. But in the spirit of IE, when I realized how hungry I was at 10:30, instead of saying, no, you have to wait until after 12:00, I thought, Why? Why would I wait 2 hours when I'm hungry now?

Since I have a plan for the day, I went and got something from it, a new yogurt that I wanted to try. I poured out a little fiber cereal to top it with and I will admit I measured it. But anyway, I ate feeling each bite hit my stomach and paying attention to the taste. I was trying to do what Katt described about stopping one bite short of full. Ended up eating half the yogurt and about 2/3 of the cereal (I add it layer by layer as I eat down the container so it stays crunchy).

I'm going to do this all day, with the foods from my plan, so it's more of a transitional thing, but still.

Yesterday was so much nervous eating. It's like when it's an up day, I get all my nervous eating done. As though I have to do it sometime, because how else will I cope? Bah!!! I don't want to do that any more.

5 Bites from okay.

Starving hungry growling tummy on Monday around noon. Grabbed some cheese and crackers. Five bites in, paying close attention to each one, I realized I was fine. Not hungry in the slightest. Waited a few minutes. Decided to eat about 2 more bites. Waited a few more minutes. Gave the rest to DH.

It didn't take a huge meal to fill me up, even though I hadn't eaten since dinner the night before. I waited to feel the hungry, then I felt the food going in, and I felt the second it was enough. I think when I'm extra hungry, I'll need extra food to fill me up. The truth is, the size of my stomach doesn't change with how hungry I feel. So, if my stomach can be content with 5-7 bites, then my new mantra: you are only five bites from okay.

How long did 5 bites last? Hours, actually. And if they hadn't, I could have had 5 bites (or however many--it's not the exact number of bites, it's that it's so small) of something else. That feels so liberating.

Of course, this is on the condition that there is no emotional element to the eating. Sigh. But it's a good start, I think.

I'm glad it made sense. I wondered if I had expressed it well enough to make sense. I am so glad when I feel hungry enough to eat a horse that I will not in fact need the whole horse.

Perfect. I need to work on the "5 bites" theory. So far it's been more like 30 bites!

Hi EmmaLiza- lurker popping in

It is funny, I noticed the same thing for the last 3 days (since I have given an IE a shot), that just few bites completely satisfy me for a long time. It thought something was wrong with me

LOL! Nothing wrong when we pay attention. It's just I find it hard to pay attention when I'm in company. It's not the "pressure" to eat that some people describe, it's that I can't give enough attention to myself to tell when to stop.
