This month I have lost 9 pounds, but it only really started coming off when we started doing this new way of eating which was on the 15th March....we are going to be skinny minnies.....
Yes, coconut oil is supposed to be a "cure all" for many ailments that afflict us as we age! 9 pounds is awesome! I'm sure you will go over the 10 pounds lost mark before March rolls out of here!

Julie I really enjoyed that artice....talking about protein
•Dr. Layman says consuming 30 g protein at each meal is critical (especially for weight loss) because the 30 gram level of intake at each meal triggers a muscle response and increases mitochondrial biogenesis. This increase in protein synthesis and mitochondrial numbers increases thermogenesis (calorie burning). He said the energy expenditure of muscles involved in protein synthesis is greater than the expenditure when the muscle is doing intense exercise.

•If you eat less than 30 grams of protein at each meal, there is no muscle effect. The protein is then wasted as simple calories. It gets converted to glucose or fat and lean tissue is lost.

So what I take from this is maybe instead of having all my protein at dinner, it is better to split it up in the day into three meals...also the bit about the muscle response is interesting...so its better than a work out ...he said 'the energy expenditure of muscles involved in protein synthesis is greater than the expenditure when the muscle is doing intense exercise.
Fascinating stuff.....

Julie I think Susan posted the link in her message on the page before unless the mods have taken it off lol..

Sandy - I am not sure of this because if you look at the website ketogenic diet resource webpage there are at least 3 different opinions on how much protein is required... I wish the doctors could agree...

I think my plateau was caused by too much protein...and thus calories, if you will... My doctor said I was to eat around 75gr a day...

I think the bottom line is that we need to experiment with the levels of protein that gives us adequate but also allows weight loss...we are not all the same for these requirements. So really looking at 3 things, calories, carbs and protein. Does this make sense?

Protein intake may be too high. Too much excess protein, say in excess of 1.5 grams per kilogram of lean body mass, can have the same effect on blood glucose as carbohydrates, and this can be a "hidden" factor for a weight loss plateau.
A higher protein intake is encouraged during the first 3-4 weeks of a ketogenic diet. But after the body becomes keto-adapted and is burning mostly ketones for fuel, protein intake should be lowered to between .8 - 1.5 grams per kilogram of lean body mass. (If you exercise a lot, you can go to the higher end of the range.) Try cutting back on protein and adding a little more fat to your diet, while staying at a calorie deficit. For more info, see my daily protein requirement page.
Example Results:
According to your measurements - weight of 130 pounds and height of 5' 6", your lean body mass is estimated to be 98.69 . Since the ideal body fat percentage for women is 22%, your ideal lean body weight is 101.88 pounds. Remember these are guidelines; your physician should help you determine the ideal weight and body fat for you.

Julie...I think you are right...I am going to lower my protein today as I have been eating just under 200 grams....oh my goodness, and after watching half of that video I can see that is to much....I am not in this just for weight loss but also optimum health....so today I am going to have a go at cutting my protein more, I can't believe I was eating so much to be honest, although it did look a lot on my plate as well lol...thanks for sharing this.....I have been researching food and health for a few years now, most people find it totally boring like my sisters and hubby, its great to have a place where you can chat about all of this.

And yet another protein requirement from the good ol USA gov...

The USDA recommended daily allowance (RDA) for protein intake is set to .36 grams per pound of body weight each day. This figure represents the minimum intake needed to maintain health in already healthy people. The protein requirements for those who are sick, injured or on a very low carb diet are different.

Thanks Sandy for waiting for me the catch up! But I seem to also be weighing the same all week! I shouldn't complain! How long did it take for me to get here? Seems like forever. I've been playing this game since January and finally seeing results, so I'm going to be satisfied with not re-gaining weight. Let's be pleased with what we are seeing and keep trying without obsessing over it. It is frustrating I'll admit, but like the weather, it will change!

Just looked up Jean Plaidy on Amazon - Gasp! Just what I love! Look out Kindle - you will be getting fat!

Blew it last night... Had a cookie... my bad... I do well all day long... Even forgot to eat lunch since I am so busy at work. This is why I cannot have a carb day and get back easily.... Plan to do the oil fast during the day with vitamins to get into ketosis then protein at dinner...

I do IF, if I can't stand the hunger I take coconut oil.

It seems as soon as I start eating .. I cannot stop...lately...until my body switches to fat burning below....yesterday I was in ketosis flu....I think it takes me 2 days to switch...
What have others experienced? or have you been low carb so long you can't remember???
from Dr. Mercola...
Your body has a limited storage of sugar, stored in the form of glycogen, typically in your muscles and liver. These glycogen stores are depleted in about 12 hours or so, at which point your body has to switch to burning fat. This is part of what makes intermittent fasting so beneficial, because by not eating for 12-18 hours or longer each day, your body shifts into this fat-burning mode. While frequent hunger is a major issue for most people who are reliant on burning carbs for energy, fat-burners can go all day, or a number of days if necessary, without food, since most of us have plenty of fat to be used for fuel.

Julie.....Lol, trust me to imagine you drinking olive oil lol. kidding......I did Judd for about a week, but on my dd as soon as I ate I couldn't stop, it just kicked the hunger switch....and then I just got obsessive over food lol....so I had to stop, I researched it for days and days and I can see the health benefits to it, but I just couldn't do it....I think though I am kind of doing it a bit now as I eat my last meal at 5.30 in the evening and don't eat again until around 12 lunchtime so that's about 18 hours without eating....
Oh I hated that carb flu, I got it so bad it actually put me to bed twice lol, I found 2 days and then I was ok again, so hopefully you will feel better soon, I did find bullion or stock cubes in hot water helped a bit, I think atkins said it puts minerals back in your body....... I have only been doing low carb since feb 1st, but then switched to fruit and salad which lost me nothing, and then switched back to low carb and virtually lost nothing, and now this low cal and low carb as low carb wasn't working.....I feel like I have been all over the place lol.
I enjoy Dr Mercola as well, I subscribed to him years ago as well as natural news, anything to do with health.
Tonight I am going back to fish and salad as last night I did an experiment and had chicken and look what happened lol, also to kick start myself I am walking up a couple of very big hills which is something else that kick started me last time...yuk I hate hills lol.

Jeanne...Thank you...its so great that we are all supporting each other, it just helps doesn't it....and way to go woman on losing that pound....I did write about what low carbs I am eating but it might have gotten lost amongst my ramblings on here lol.

Sandy---I totally understand what it is like to be stuck--but you have come so far----don't give up trying to find what works for you! Keep doing your experiments---if fish and salad work, that's not an unhealthy way to live for a while.

And the longer you maintain a weight, the more your body adapts to it, so that it is "normal"--and we know how hard the body works at keeping the status quo!

Yahoo - - I got the 1972 version of Atkins paperback yesterday in the mail...
Maybe I should do the induction....for a few days to get into ketosis...hmmm
Anyway, its a good pure reference to the original Atkins approach...

Judy....Thanks for the encouragement, you are right about the body working to keep its status quo lol.....I just wish I could pick it up scrape it off and throw it away lol.

Julie....You have some great reading to do now....that's a good idea to do induction again....totally anything to get things moving again....I am giving myself until tomorrow to see a movement on the scale and if not I am going to cut out carbs completely for a few days to see what happens...

Good morning everyone,
I am happy to report a .7 drop loss today. I had gained 4pounds from my plateau so I am on the way... Will continue with this until I hit another plateau, then I either I could wait or change something... Will try to do the isopure for lunch today, with some kind of meat/salad, hopefully fish today.
Yahoo...keeping the downward trend!
