Amy's low carb adventure...

Hello, everyone!
I'm hoping to find some encouragement and support to help me stick with a low carb lifestyle. I've had lots of success with it in the past. Lately I just can't stick with it. I plan to post what I'm eating, what I'm struggling with and track my weight loss here.
Friday I decided to really get with it and make a commitment to this. It probably had something to with scheduling our family reunion this summer and not wanting to be "the fat one".

Friday, 1/10/14 (226.4)
B: baked egg wrapped in turkey bacon (2), cup of coffee with 1 TBSP sugar free creamer
L: salsa chicken breast with sour cream and Mexican blend cheese
S: pepperoni and cheddar cheese
D: chic-fila Cobb salad with avocado ranch dressing, 2 nuggets (last minute decision to meet hubby for dinner. I thought the chicken in the salad was going to be grilled, not fired. And there was a tiny bit of corn in it. Felt bad eating it, but it could have been much worse.)

Saturday, 1/11/14 (225.6)
B: baked egg wrapped in turkey bacon (2)
S: hot dog, plain
L: 2 hamburger patties, 1 slice of cheese, pickles, mayo
S: small pkg (0.8 oz) peanuts
D: grilled sirloin steak, steamed broccoli
S: MIM with 1 TBSP Walden Farms peanut spread (Was wanting something sweet.)

This morning I weighed 224.4. It's nice to see quick results on the scales. I'll updated later with today's food.

Here's what I ended up eating today:
B: coffee with 1TBSP sugar free creamer, 2 baked eggs wrapped in bacon
L: tuna patties (3)
S: pepperoni
D: beef stroganoff, steamed green beans (found the recipe on Pinterest. It was just ok)

I must have over done it with the salt today. I've drank a ton of water and I'm wanting more now. I baked more of the bacon/egg muffin things and have leftovers packed for lunch tomorrow. It's so important for me to plan ahead or I'll end up spending too much money in the cafeteria and probably eat something that isn't smart.

Hope everyone had a great weekend. I'm feeling good about getting back on track and feeling more in control already.

Monday, 1/13/14 (224.2)
B: baked eggs wrapped in bacon (2)
S: pepperoni
L: leftover beef stroganoff
S: peanuts (0.8 oz)
D: Lisa's taco pie (from genaw.com) with salsa, sour cream and guacamole (about 2 TBSP each)

Weighed in at 224.2 this morning. That's only a tiny loss (0.2), but I'll take it. I'm still up 10 pounds from this past summer. Gotta get it together!!

Am I the only person that completely sabatoges my own success? After six days of eating completely low carb, I completely ruined it last night. My son and I were going to visit my husband at work. We stopped at Sonic. I got a sugar free slush and mini milkshakes for the guys. Rob had to leave on an emergency flight before we got there. Being the carb addict that I am, I couldn't just let that shake go to waste. I also couldn't (or just didn't) stop there. I ended up eating the bun from the burger that I had planned to throw away, graham crackers, an oatmeal cream pie and an orange. Who cheats and eats graham crackers and an orange??!? Of course the scales were way up this morning. I am completely disappointed in myself.

I'm trying to put yesterday behind me and get back on track. So far, so good. But we have a date night planned. Dinner with another couple then going to the Grizzles basketball game. Hope I can keep on track, but we will see.

Hi. My name is Amy and I'm addicted to carbohydrates. The last time I had carbs was 12 hours and 51 minutes ago.

Starting over. Again.

Thanks for stopping by! I need all the support I can get!

I finally had a good day as far as eating goes. I was home with my sickish 2 year old all day. He wanted to be held a lot. Instead of meals, I kind of grazed most of the day. I did cook a yummy peppercorn beef tenderloin with green beans for dinner. I drank quite a bit of water today, too. I'll weigh again tomorrow morning and see what kind of damage the 3 days of carbs did. I've got to figure out how to stay focused. There has to be some way to make it click. I know this way of eating is what works for me. I've had success on it in the past. I just have to commit to eat and realize the other stuff (as yummy as it may be) just isn't worth it.

I did have time to look through some of the recipe boards today and picked out a few new things to try this week. I'm always open to suggestions for easy and budget friendly meal ideas.

Well, two weeks back on low carb and I've lost three pounds. There were several days that I fell off the wagon (like all of last weekend). I guess three pounds is pretty good when you factor that in. I've been back on track this week and hope I can stick with it.

I think I'm going to pull out my 30 day shred DVD and give that a try tonight. I'll have to wait until after RJ's in bed. I can't do much of anything while he's up. In my last post I said he was kinda sick. That turned out to be the flu. He's extra needy right now. He hasn't had any fever today so hopefully he's on the up-swing. Anyway, I would like to do 30 day shred 3 days a week and walk 3 days a week.

Hi Amy. You can do this. The more days on plan that I get under my belt means its so much easier to say no to the bad stuff.

You're right, Cfine. It does get easier everyday. I'm hoping I have built up some self control. Hubby and I are headed to a benefit dinner at a local casino. It's to raise money for a fallen heroes memorial. I'm not sure what the food will be like. I know the casino has crab legs tonight, so that's what I'm wanting! I also meant to eat a big lunch so I wouldn't be starving tonight. Well... The sick kiddo laid down for a nap and I did too. We all slept through lunch! I ate an Atkins bar while I was getting ready to go out. Hope that will hold me over!

I am so proud of myself! I kept it low carb at the benefit dinner last night. There was a huge veggie tray, prime rib and hot wings. I was so excited about the low carb options. They had other yummy looking stuff, but I skipped over them. I even resisted the dessert table and the amazing looking cheesecake. I did have 2 drinks (Malibu and diet coke) but made sure I had a glass of water after each drink.

I am up a little bit on the scales this morning. I'm sure it's from all the salt and 2 drinks. I've got to be sure to drink plenty of water today to wash that stuff out.

Give me a prime rib any day and I won't care a thing about dessert. It my favorite. Hope you enjoyed! Way to go on sticking on plan!

Up a little more this morning. Really need to drink more water and POOP! Sorry for the TMI. We're potty training a 2 year old so bodily functions is a favorite topic around our house.

So, I'm really not seeing the results I would like to see. I feel like I'm in ketosis. I haven't actually checked, but my breath feels a little funky. Maybe I'll check while I'm at work tomorrow. But the weight just isn't coming off. The first time I did LC the weight just melted off. Of course that was in college and I was 12 years younger. Wish I could get that to happen again. I did download one of the older Atkins books yesterday. I'm reading that and looking for some inspiration/motivation. Thinking about going old school Atkins for a bit to see if that helps.

Had a good day and stayed on plan. I have noticed that my moods are way more stable when I'm LC. Before if I went a long time without eating I would be way cranky. Today I couldn't go to lunch until almost 1:00 (I usually eat at 11:30) and I was fine; hungry, but not starving and definitely not cranky.

I'm feeling lighter today so maybe there will be a good number on the scales tomorrow!

1/29/14 (221.8)

Finally had a good number on the scales this morning! I'll probably be up a little tomorrow. I usually bounce around a bit before I see a number for good. My first mini-goal is 218. That's my prepregnancy weight. I managed to lose the weight last year, but regainied in after a pregnancy and miscarriage last summer. The "baby" will be three next month, so it's time for the baby weight to go!

Up a little this morning. It is nice to know 221 exists on my scales. Hope it will make another appearance tomorrow. I've decided I to start tracking all my food. I have a feeling the little carbs are adding up to more than I think they are. Any suggestions for a good app on my phone to help with that?

Yesterday I decided to look up the recipe for the "crackslaw" I've herad so much about. Turns out I've been cooking it (or a version of it) for ages. I just didn't have a cutesy name for it. Now I can be like the cool kids and say "I'm having crackslaw for dinner." It is yummy and cheap. I'll be having leftovers for lunch today.

I woke up at 4am this morning to find that RJ (2y/o) had snuck into my bed AND pee'd in it! That's how my day started and it's been crazy since. I think I finally have things under control at work. Should be a nice afternoon.

It's been a while since I've posted anything. I haven't been sticking to LC very well. We had an I've storm and no power (no way to cook) for several days. I took the lazy way out and ate fast food and carbs. Unfortunately, I kept eating the junk for several days after the power was back on. I got back on track yesterday and decided to brave the scales this morning. I expected to gain a couple of pounds. I was surprised to see 222.3! Now to keep the scales moving downward!

Amy, that weight loss is great. It is hard to stay on plan when there isn't any power. Just keep on going and stay on the low carb track. You are doing really well.

Thanks, Gail. It's nice to find support here.

Yesterday was another good day on plan. I made roasted cauliflower last night and ate too much. I love that stuff!! It's hard to be upset over eating too much cauliflower.

Another loss on the scales this morning. 221.6 is the lowest I've seen in a while. I'll probably be up a little tomorrow. My husband and I went to lunch today for my (early) birthday. We shared a shrimp appetizer that was lightly breaded and had a sweet sauce on it. I tried to balance it out with a Greek salad with grilled shrimp.

I've been sticking to low carb pretty well for the last month and lost about 4 pounds. I know I haven't been 100% on plan, but I really feel like that number should be higher. I've done a lot of reading and have decided to try the fat fast. I've found several recipes that make it look more doable than just cream cheese and macadamia nuts. I'm going to start tomorrow and continue for four days. This means I will start on my birthday and end on valentine's day. Probably not the best planning! We'll see how it goes. I would love to shed several pounds and get me jump started again. If anyone has any experience with fat fasting or suggestions, I would love to hear them. I told my husband about it and he just thinks it sounds crazy.

Hi Amy! I just started a journal too! I love the support from these boards. Looks like you are going through alot of the same struggles I am and our weight is very close to each other. I love your baked egg wrapped in turkey bacon. What a great idea. I also have to plan ahead or I spend too much money on food at work. Nice to meet you I hope we can support each other:-)

Day one of fat fast is done, done, done!! It really wasn't too bad. The hardest part was planning what to eat to balance out the calorie restriction with the high fat percentage. I tracked everything. I need up at 1011 calories and right at 90% fat. Here's what I had:
B: bulletproof coffee (coffee, butter, CO, Splenda)
S: one deviled egg
L: shirataki noodle with pesto and EVOO, diet coke
S: macadamia nuts
D: chicken broth with HWC

Even though I'm not a huge fan of shirataki noodles, they helped me feel like I was eating a real meal instead of just a snack. It also helped me not look like a total weirdo in the break room at work from only eating a tiny bit of food. I kinda want to wait until Saturday morning (the end of my 4 days of FF) to weigh again and see how much I'll lose. But I'm completely addicted to the scales and will weigh first thing in the morning (and probably tonight before I go to bed).

Down one whole pound since yesterday. Love those kind of results. Today was much harder than yesterday. I ended up at 1,007 calories and only 83% fat. Lunch brought the percentage down a lot more than I thought it would.

B: BPC
S: chicken broth, HWC
L: shirataki alfredo
S: macadamia nuts
D: fat bomb
S: mozzarella cheese

I felt totally icky after the fat bomb. I ate some cheese to try to help that out. Probably shouldn't have had it since it brought the fat percent down even more. I'll do better tomorrow.

One or two days of a fat fast is usually all that I can manage, but it does help me to get back in the groove of things. Food tastes so wonderful after a fat fast. I was eating way too many veggies and wasn't losing much. I cut out most vegfies(maybe one serving per day) and am finally seeing results. Maybe you could try that after your fat fast.

Fat Fast day #3
B: BPC
L: boiled egg with mayo, shirataki with pesto
S: macadamia nuts
D: broth with HWC
S: a cupcake worth of German chocolate batter

Lesson learned, do not bake Valentine treats for the Hubby while on a fat fast. Fail.

Down 2.2 from yesterday! That's 4.2 pounds in 3 days. I literally squealed on the scales this morning. My first mini-goal was 218. That makes me less than my prepregnancy weight!

I was not expecting a loss like that after my fall to the cupcake last night. I did fat fast again today for day 4. I did eat real (low carb) food for dinner. I'll weight again in the morning, but don't expect to have lost any more. For now, my plan is to fat fast the 4 days a week that I work and eat low carb/induction on the weekends. I think I can tolerate 4 days on / 3 days off.

B: BPC
L: chicken broth with HWC
S: macadamia nuts
S: turkey jerky and cheese
D: steak, roasted asparagus, cauliflower

It's basically a very strict low carb, low calorie, high fat way of eating. You get 1,000 calories a day and 90% of your calories should come from fat. I've read between 70-90% should be fat. But the Atkin's book says 90% so that's what I was aiming for. It should only be done for 5 days at a time at the most. I wasn't able to do the full 5 days before I quit. You get good results, but it is very restrictive.

I haven't been on here in a little while. I totally fell off the low carb wagon this weekend. I knew it would be hard to stick to it because of events we had to attend (a going away party for my husbands coworker at an Italian place) and then hosting my son's birthday party. Add being sick with respiratory junk and I just didn't have the will power to stay commited. Sometimes we have to be forgiving of ourselves and say I'll get right back on track. That's what I've done today.

Hi Amy,

Thanks for the info regarding the Fat Fast. Sounds very restrictive. I would only last a day or two.

Its so hard when "life" gets in the way. I know exactly how you feel. I also fell off the low carb wagon. My husband and I went out to Italian rest to celebrate vday on Friday(since we couldn't go last week) I ate pasta, drank lots of vino. Oh well today is a new day:-)
Glad I have you ladies for support!

No more excuses

3/6/14 (224.6)

I can not make any more excuses for myself. I have been on a total carb binge lately. I finally got on the scales this morning and was up to 224.6. Honestly, I expected it to be higher.

I've set a goal for myself of 30 days straight of low carb eating. Today was day 1 and I did just fine. I've been off work all week because of a snow/ice storm that had the roads a total mess and daycare closed. I'm actually looking forward to going back to work tomorrow. I need the structure through the day. I've also figured out that it was a lot easier stick with low carb when I was single and didn't have a kid. Now there is way too much temptation in my house. Anyway, those are excuses and I said I'm done with those.

Day 1:
B: turkey bacon, scrambled egg beaters with a tiny bit of no sugar added ketchup, coffee with HWC and SF caramel syrup
L: rotel chicken with cabbage (something I cooked in the crockpot yesterday)
S: turkey pepperoni
D: chicken salad (can of chicken, mayo, garlic salt, onion powder), 2 slices cheddar cheese
