Oh, thanks GalvGal. I'm really glad to be back, and so is my little rat terrier, Button . She smothered us in kisses for nearly an hour, zooming around the house intermittently between all those wet smooches. She's such a goofball.

I'm so relieved that dreaded task is behind us now. The facility is one of the most highly rated Alzheimer's facilities in the state (Freedom House at Air Force Village in San Antonio). It's actually a research center for Alzheimer's research at UT Hlth Science Ctr. San Antonio. We did our best and it really went pretty smoothly for us and Mom as well. We're certain we have picked the right place for her.

OMG, 10 days of eating out 3xdaily while down in San Antonio (lots of bad carbs, too, I might add) and I didn't gain a single pound!!!! I had to get up on the scale 3 times this morning to be sure I was reading it right!

Now to get really serious about re-starting Induction, now that the stresses of getting Mom placed in the memory care facility are behind me. Maybe my body won't be making so much cortisol anymore.

I'm always behind the times, but I finally joined Facebook and in addition to my personal page, have set up a page for my recipes under the name of my recipe blog (Buttoni's Low Carb Recipes). Check it out, Like my page if so inclined. I'm posting both new and old recipes as I build up the page. It will take a very long time to build up an "audience" there, but folks seem to like Facebook so much, decided setting it up might reach come folks that don't frequent my favorite forums.

Wow, that's all been really stressful for you!
Great work holding your own in the face of the stress and carb assaults!
Thanks for your great recipe ideas and making them accessible to us all.

Thank you, MsKitty. I feel a lot of the stress has been relieved now that Mom is placed and doing well there. A friend that knows her well visited recently and said Mom seems happy, is making sense and remembered who she was when she went by. They were breakfast buddies in independent living and Mom hadn't seen her in 3 months. So remembering who she was I thought was a GOOD thing.

The stress has pretty bad for a few years though, and my doc is currently running some tests to rule out Cushings Syndrome and other high-cortisol health disorders. She's trying to find out why I've gotten 4 recurrences of shingles in just 2˝ years. It's pretty rare to have it recur more than every 4 years or more. My recurrence pattern usually indicates an underlying cause like a compromised immune system, which long-term high stress can cause. And that can be caused by many things, actually. May take awhile to find out if it's all stress-related or not.

I'm enjoying the recipe website, and now my recipe Facebook page, as well as posting for Jen Eloff's LOW CARBING AMONG FRIENDS Facebook page. But it is keeping me so busy, I don't get back here to LCF as often as I once did.

I've started following Dr. Eric Westman's version of Atkins (20 TOTAL carbs per day) as of May 5th and am down 4# already. If this works out for me, I'm just going to do that until I get to goal......no carb ladder reintroduction until I am at goal this time. Then I can watch what happens more closely than last time. No berries, no nuts, no added dairy, no fruit of any kind, and for now, no sweets other than pure stevia in my coffee.

Thanks, GG. Feels god to see the scale going down rather than up. After placing Mom in the memory care facility, I really started eating some bad carbs. But I've put that behind me now. Hopefully this is a trend and not a fluke.

Everyday this week I have been listening to the Podcasts from The Diabetes Summit.
Today Dr. Jockers gave his presentation re: Ketogenic Diet.
It was good to hear refresher information from a source I hadn't heard from before.
Keeping after the nutrition side of our foods takes effort, but it is so worth it! ! !

I'm trying Dr. Westman's brand of Atkins (Duke Univ. LC Support Group) for 2 weeks now. Basically it's Induction until you reach goal, no carb ladder stuff until you're at goal, and you do NOT get to deduct fiber. It's 20 TOTAL carbs a day. I've lost 6# in the time I've been doing it. Headaches were just as bad as when I did Induction before, but those have stopped now. I'm going to see how it goes for me to get my last 20-25# off.

I see an endo the 18th to figure out: 1) why I've gotten Shingles 5 times in 2.5 years and 4 of them in the last 9 months! Clearly an immune issue going on; and 2) to straighten out my hormonal issues my last doc failed at. BTW he shut down the major part of his practice, the BRHT implant side of it anyway. I suspect he was being threatened with a lawsuit, as that all happened real abruptly. :{ Love, love, LOVE my new PCP. She's OK with low-carbing, too! And has the wherewithall to get me to an endocrinologist to evaluate and treat what is clearly a compromised immune system. Keeping my fingers crossed that THIS doctor knows what they are doing and fins some answers.

On a very sad note, my brother has learned his fatigue for several months is caused by Myelodisplastic Syndrome (MDS), confirmed via bone marrow biopsy. Likely developed from benzene exposure from a lifetime of smoking. Basically his bone marrow makes mal-formed red cells, and not enough red cells. It also does not make enough white cells, so he's at high rick for infections. The prognosis is pretty grim for folks over 65 who have the "Refractory Anemia with excess Blasts" flavor of the disease, which it has been determined he has. 6-10 months is the prognosis. This form of MDS almost always transitions to acute leukemia. The blood transfusions every 2 weeks now he can get at home, but he lives alone (near Seattle) and has to line up a lot of home health people to do everything like that now. Infection of any kind can be serious, so I doubt he'll be able to fly to Texas anymore. Too risky for him in public places like airports and enclosed airplanes. We just don't know how or when we will tell Mom, as she is in a dementia care facility and really too frail to be traveling by any mode of transportation. I believe his may be the very first case of cancer on either side of my family, so I am having difficulty wrapping my head around all of this.

I know what it is to be surrounded by illness. I have been dealing with it for many years too. I figure I have to stay as healthy as possible to be able to help everyone in my family. Take care Peggy.

Take time out for yourself...take time to get some outside air/walk....(inspite of the sun in Texas, we have plenty of that here in Galveston, too!)...you have a lot on your plate...

google 'shinrin-yoku.org/research'

not sure if I could link the site or not.

I finally saw the endo...or I should say 2 endo specialists. they're starting tests. Man, I got another outbreak of Shingles the very day I say them! That's just 2 weeks since the last outbreak. Whatever is wrong with my immune system it appears to be getting worse. Sure hope they can figur out what's going on with me. Not losing any weight while all this is going on.

My brother's last blood work showed much lower red and white cell counts (down 50% in 2 weeks) and that was AFTER a transfusion. His prognosis is much worse than when we last spoke. Life just keeps on dealing him a worse and worse hand it would seem.

Thank you for you support.Galveston Gal. It's hard to believe he's really gone.

And now on top of that sad turn of events, my doctor, trying to get to the bottom of why I've had 8 fairly small outbreaks of Shingles in just 11 months, did a CAT scan Wed. When I called to get the readout today (to see if she still wants me to go to the referral Immmunology appt. tomorrow for further immune system diagnostics), she now wants me to come in tomorrow morning 8:30 to talk to me in person. This does NOT sound good but I'm trying to think positive. Could I get any more bad news this year? Seems like I've not had one bit of GOOD news since my dad died in 2005. It's just been one thing after another. I confess I'm really nervous.

I sure hope not, but I'm an eternal pessimist and am really concerned. Especially when they aren't able to just say the CAT scan showed nothing on the phone. Not good news most likely.

Defo a mass on rt ovary. 10cm+ in size. Another test CA-125 that won't come back until next Wed. on likely "nature" of the mass. I hate all this waiting.

Thank you for including me in your prayers, Laura. I'm trying to think posistive thoughts. Going to try my hand at a big, soft pretzel and a cinnamon bun with my new psyllium bread dough tomorrow for fun and to divert my thoughts.

Thank you JMacB and Heidinem. I really don't like this waiting, but I guess it can't be helped. Ultrasound tomorrow. Readout on all labs to date Wednesday. I should know what I'm dealing with then, a benign tumor on a malignant tumor.

Finally a bit of GOOD news. My doctor called to tell me the cancer marker (CA-125) test was "normal" and the colon cancer blood test was "normal". So outward indications are that it probably isn't malignant and perhaps just a large fibroid. I had one of those in 1980, and some people are just prone to them. Although I don't really think they can be certain until pathology gets the specimen and slices and does their microscope thing to definitively rule out malignancy. My doc said she couldn't really see what this thing is "attached to" (it's so big) from the cat scan view. Perhaps the ultrasound tomorrow will tell them more. Looks like I'm surgery bound soon and will find out when probably Wednesday when I talk to the GYN again.
