Just got home from work and got the news that my dad went to the ER yesterday. He has pneumonia and something called COPD? I don't know what that is. I already had plans to go out there this Sunday. My dad NEVER goes to the hospital, so I know it must be serious.

It's a chronic condition of the lungs - did he smoke ?
Copd, chf, emphysema Etc ... Most older people that smoke or used to get them . Inhalers , nebulizer treatments , sometimes steroids -- all used to help them breathe easier

Hope he feels better soon !

Yeah, he has smoked since he was a teenager. My mom said they told him he needs to quit smoking. He has done it before, cold turkey, a few times, but it never really lasts. My dad is only 58 years old. She told me he is home now on antibiotics. Just I know how my dad is, and he never goes to the doctors. EVER.

Glad he's home now. That's a good sign. My Dad was the same, smoked all his adult life. Finally quit smoking when he had advanced emphysema. Its a terrible disease. I sure hope your Dad quits before it develops in him too.

I took off work last night and today, and came out to my parents house last night. Glad to see that my dad is not as bad as I was thinking in my head. It was nice to relax at mom and dad's and sleep here. I will be heading home around 3 this afternoon. Just so happens we are in the middle of a blizzard lol.

Glad to hear that your dad is doing better than you had imagined. Be careful driving home in that blizzard. Those sorts of conditions can be so dangerous. Vaya con Dios.

Re: quitting smoking

Has your dad considered nicotine substitutes like Nicorette gum, lozenges or patches? Those aids can be very effective and might provide a less difficult way for him to ease into abstinence.

I was disappointed when I arrived yesterday that he answered the door smoking a cigarette I don't know if he will consider the substitutes. He said he has been smoking about 2 cigarettes a day because the arbuterol makes it taste really bad. BUT...I have to confess I saw him smoke more than 2 cigarettes in the time I was there. My mom is on him about it, but he is going to do what he wants. He is taking the medicine, hacking up a lung and uncomfortable in most positions. But, by the time I left today, he looked and sounded better than he did last night.

Eating at my mom and dad's is another story.
Yesterday...
B~steak and eggs w/ 1/2 tsp sugarfree jelly
L~Salmon w/ salad, prosciutto and mozzarella
D~6 hot wings, blue cheese, leftover roast in au jus
S~diet hot chocolate, laughing cow cheese wedge

Today...
B~ham and cheese omelet, 2 slices bacon
S~laughing cow wedge
L~leftover alfredo, spinach chicken over 1/2 c dreamfields
D~not sure yet.

My mom ordered pizza for dinner last night. I told her I couldn't eat the pizza so she ordered a small wings for me. They also had some leftover roast beef that I ate.

This morning, my mom wanted to impress me with a ham and cheese omelet, but it tasted raw in teh middle. I just ate what I could and told her I was full On the plus side, she did have diet hot chocolate and laughing cow cheese.

Sounds like you did really well, considering the options.
We'll have to continue to pray for your Dad. Its hard to quit something so addicting.

I agree with Laura. Lisa, you continue to impress us with your determination and steely resolve as well as your excellent cooking and organizational skills. You managed to lose weight and stay on plan during some very trying times too. Hope that you are very proud of yourself because you should be.

I am a firm believer that if we didn't struggle, if we didn't go through rough patches in life, we would never appreciate the positive aspects of life. Things have been tough lately, but lots of great things have happened too. I have colleges knocking on my door, looking for my son, to give him free money to attend their schools. I have an 11 year old who just challenged the fourth chair for clarinet in his band, and won on his very first try, knocking out an 8th grader! I have lost a ton of weight and been able to adhere to a new lifestyle that I could never quite get my hands on before. It sucks that my dad is sick and that work hasn't been very prosperous lately, but I believe it is setting me up for other successes in life. And, my dad being sick might even be a good thing. It hopefully will help him reconsider his life choices and make healthier ones! I can not wait for the new year to begin. With all of the strife that I have had at the end of this one, I know it is setting the new year up for complete success!! If nothing bad ever happened in my life, I would never be able to truly appreciate all of the positive things that happen.

Lisa, I am so glad your dad is doing better. We must appreciate every moment we can with our loved ones while we have them. We are all only here for a short time though it may seem like forever in a moment. You have a lot of things going on right now but it will only get better.

Sorry I haven't been on in awhile, early Sunday morning, my dad was admitted to hospital by ambulance. I guess it's that time of year.

L~Chicken Ranch BLT from McD's without the bun
S~3 sugarfree russell stovers
D~Mama lupes wrap with pastrami, american cheese and thai chili sauce
S~atkins peanut butter cups

I also made a crock pot of navy beans and ham for the boys. I worked a double again today, and wasn't eating dinner with them. When I got home, I did have about two bites from the pot just to make sure they were soft enough...and didn't need seasoning. I don't think it's really going to hurt me any.

Finally I have a day off!! After a hectic weekend with my parents, and working doubles to make up for lost shifts, I am off tomorrow. Plan on starting baking. I told the boys they could each choose two kinds of cookies for me to make, but that I wouldn't be making as many as we normally have. My oldest said peanut butter and snickerdoodles. Christian said those are my two as well! ha ha. So, making only 2 kinds of high carb cookies this year. BUT...also experimenting with 2 kinds of lc cookies too! I have to figure out which two out of the tons I have found to make

I hope you have a wonderful, well-deserved day off. Holiday cooking baking can be really fun -- I know it is a lot of work but I hope you will enjoy it. Again, your boys are really lucky to have you. You take such pleasure in caring for them. They know that they are loved through and through.
