onceNforall.....THIS IS IT!

Okay....so it's Sunday, which means (in my world) I start my diet AGAIN tomorrow! I'm feeling frustration, desperation....you name it. I decided to give Chris Powell's Carb Cycling a try and lost 7.5lb the first week....then had a "cheat day" (part of the program) and never managed to get back on board. Gained 9lb back the next week! So here I sit at 299.5...totally disgusted with myself.

WHAT BETTER TIME TO START A JOURNAL? :stars:

A little bit about myself....66 years young (mentally) but feel 93 physically some days. I have been "morbidly obese" my entire adult life. I need a knee replacement, but my doctor wants me to get some of this weight off before he will do it. This (of course) limits my mobility and I've been using that as an excuse for not exercising for far too long. I do belong to the Y and have participated in water aerobics and water walking in the past....just haven't gotten my butt there in far too long. EVERYTHING'S AN EFFORT AT THIS WEIGHT!

So, the question is....do I CHOOSE TO LOSE? After all, weight loss is nothing but a series of choices. I intend to start making some wise ones! Please feel free to join me on my journey! :help:

onceNforall 06-23-2013 08:48 AM

Question....

Does anyone know how I can add a link to my journal to my signature?

onceNforall 06-25-2013 05:47 AM

All in all...successful first day!

Started out with a HC day yesterday and stuck to my 1500 cal until about 9PM. That is the hardest time for me...in the evening while watching TV. Had an extra banana and slice swiss cheese....not devastating but still gives me that sense of "failure" for the day. Something I really have to work on. Don't know why I'm so hard on myself.

Was glad to see the scale down 1.5 this morning....hoping for more of a Woosh today... still have some swelling in my feet and this 90 degree weather isn't helping!

LC day today and 1200 calories.

onceNforall 06-26-2013 03:19 AM

Well...didn't stick to plan yesterday...didn't count calories or make it CP's version of LC day, but did make healthy choices all day. I'm considering not following anyone's plan but my own (as I seem to see myself as a failure if I deviate at all). Gonna try just making healthy choices and stick to a night time snack of fruit...seem to need that sweetness at the end of the day.

Down another 2lb this morning...need to get rid of all this fluid built up from all the flour and sugar and salt I consumed last week! When will I learn that this healthy way of eating MUST become a lifestyle? I'm on some plan for a week and want to have 50lb lost for my efforts and then give in when the scale doesn't go down quickly enough! When will I realize that slow and steady wins the race? :dunno:

Taking the grandkids to see Monster University today....and will take along some of my own air-popped popcorn for a snack. Makes it so much easier when I plan ahead.

onceNforall 07-11-2013 06:58 AM

Time for a different approach

Well, that didn't last long! Good results in the few days I gave it a try, but over all too much counting of calories etc. I guess I've really had it with a lifetime of thinking about either what food I should be eating or what food I shouldn't be eating on a 24/7 basis! I swear I have put on all of my weight by getting ready to start another diet TOMORROW! I have enough diet books on the shelf to open my own library.

Have decided to get off the "diet" merry go round and try and listen to my own body. Am I hungry? Why do I want to eat? What is my body really craving nutritionally? Maybe if I can try to separate the emotional eating from true hunger I will consume less calories. Nothing will be off limits as that only fuels my cravings.

Have actually done this for the past two days with good results. Now I have to learn to stay off the scale too!!

onceNforall 09-29-2013 02:59 AM

A Different Mindset....

Well....haven't been here in a while, but back once again ready to start a new lifestyle and naturally up a few more pounds. Some changes (medically) since last time and now I REALLY feel like I have no further options....this weight has to come off!

My doctor has suggested the DASH diet to address BP, cholesterol, blood sugar and other issues. Bought (yes another) the book and it seems very simple....no counting points, calories, carbs, anything....just good healthy choices. The killer is the first two weeks (jump start) you aren't allowed fruit or grains. This is to clear your system of all cravings and stabilize your blood sugar. Low fat dairy is allowed on this program....must be able to have my yogurt. By eliminating processed foods, the salt intake is way lowered and thus helpful with BP and other issues.

So...started yesterday and made it through Day 1 of Phase 1!!! :jumpjoy: Don't remember ever starting a diet on a Saturday before!! :stars: I would normally wait til Monday, or in this case Tuesday as it will be October 1st. Maybe that's a good sign! Just back from two vacations in a row and feeling MORE than ready for some healthy eating.

One of my problems (and there are many) is that we go out to eat way too often. I have promised myself that for Phase 1 (the initial two weeks) I will be eating at home. Did grocery shopping today and stocked up on lots of veggies and even prepared them all so they're ready to grab for a snack when the urge hits. Also grilled a bunch of chicken breasts and lean hamburgers tonight to have ready.

My goal? Need to lose 77lb to get to a weight where my orthopedist will do my knee replacement surgery....then on to Onederland.

onceNforall 09-29-2013 05:52 AM

WOW....just got on the scale and lost 4.5lb my first day! :jumpjoy:

All water weight bloat, but it's gone, gone, gone! Ready for Day 2!

onceNforall 09-29-2013 05:08 PM

Day 2...Phase 1

Successfully completed my 2nd day on DASH. Some headaches today, but think that's part of the carb withdrawal. I miss my fruit, but it's only for two weeks. No real cravings today which is good. Drinking water non-stop and spent most of the day in the bathroom. It's great to be able to have light cheese and nuts....they become my treat.

Well...have to go have my sugar free jello. I hope this continues to be this easy (probably not...lol). Feeling proud of myself for making it through these first two days.

:hiya: You are off to a great start! Have read good things about the DASH way of eating.

Thanks, Joni! Happy to have you pop in. Yes, I am really excited about this cause I think it really is a lifestyle I can maintain. Lord knows I've tried them all (several times)! :stars:

Have a question for you....quite computer illiterate here. How do you include your journal thread in your signature? Hope you can help.

onceNforall 10-01-2013 05:41 AM

Day 4...Phase 1

Didn't get to post yesterday but still doing well. Was feeling kind of weak yesterday morning and this is when I'd normally tell myself...you need some toast! I did throw a handful of strawberries in my plain Greek yogurt and make a smoothie, but don't feel like I did any real damage...(not supposed to have fruit the first two weeks).

This is a jump start version of the regular DASH diet the first two weeks, so I don't really consider it a "cheat". In Phase 2 I get to have 2-3 servings of fruit/day, so I'm going to allow myself 1 fruit/day if needed in Phase 1 to get me through. My cravings have disappeared, so that is wonderful!!

Got on the scale this morning and lost another pound....that's 8.5 in 3 days! I really feel like that initial bloat of water weight is almost gone. I can feel my rings looser and my ankles look back to normal (normal for me...lol). I'm really encouraged more and more with each passing day.

35down 10-01-2013 09:46 AM

:hiya: Just stopped in to see how you and DASH are getting along. Seems like you might have found a good match-congrats on the scale going down and finding your 'normal' ankles. Also, thinking the fruit thing through and making it work for you. Getting to the point of cravings disappearing must feel terrific!

Sorry, not able to help on your how to computer question. Someone could tell me how to do what you asked about, and there I would be staring blankly  at them like they were speaking a foreign language. Hopefully, some knowledgeable person will see your question and answer it for you.

I don't have a journal, so hope you don't mind if I pop by here occasionally to see how you are doing. Promise not to hijack your journal.

Love the company, Joni! Wow, you have done great! Have you lost all that since April?

Yes, I debated having that fruit yesterday cause I know how I am....such a perfectionist and if I have a slip I tend to feel like I've "blown it" and manage to sabotage myself. :dunno: I had to really talk myself through that one and didn't feel the need for a fruit today. This really seems to be a good plan for me cause I'm eating 5x/day and don't get hungry. After two weeks when I add back in the fruit and grains it should be even easier...gonna go easy on that transition though.

35down 10-02-2013 09:15 AM

Hey Sherrie :hiya: Grandsons dad was going to be home this morning so I didn't need to be there to get the boys on the school bus. Like a vacation day here. LOL So am doing a bit of reading around this forum before deciding how to spend the day.

Yes, have been low carbing since April. Am one of those lucky ones that loses a lot in the first month. It's going a lot slower now but still doing okay. Looks like you're having a pretty nice motivating loss going on. :jumpjoy: Way cool!

Daughter had given me an article about the DASH plan last winter. I was having to take 2 blood pressure meds and then doc added a diuretic into the mix. I just wasn't ready to embrace any diet.

Well, have taken up enough of your journal page today. Hope your DASH day goes well!

Joni...are you still taking the BP meds? I imagine with that weight loss you have been able to get off of them.

I too lose a great deal in the first week or two....especially with this one having no fruit or grains for the first two weeks. I've actually lost 10lb in the first 5 days and that's a little scary even for me! Have occasional heart arrythmia problems (A-fib) and need to keep hydrated. My BP is quite low right now and need to talk to the cardiologist tomorrow when I see him about my meds.

One of the real benefits I've noticed right off the bat is my knees are much less painful....need a knee replacement. My goal is to get off enough of this weight so my ortho will do the surgery. Getting old really sucks!

I'm just so determined to do this this time....wish I had discovered this plan about 30 years ago!! :stars:

Well..have a great day!

I have never heard of Dash, but it sounds pretty good from what the two of you have written.

I copied what was in my www bar up on top and pasted it into my signature. That is how I added my blog to my sig.

I too have tried this before and failed. I always give up. I am 38 years old, but have very bad knees too. I am sure I will need surgery in the future. I tore my miniscus a few years ago and exercise has never been the same again. I used to love zumba! I tried water aerobics, and liked it, but it was sort of boring for me. Very slow paced. After about two months of that, I just wasn't interested in returning.

If you find an exercise that is good for your knees, will you share with me? I do take evening walks sometimes, but some days are good and some days are bad.

Good luck on your journey! Talk to you soon :)

Wow...you are doing great! Thanks for the info regarding my signature...I'll give it a try.

The DASH diet is a very old one that has just been reformulated with a new two week jump start option (no fruit or grains the first two weeks). It started out being used for high BP but has amazing results reported for elevated cholesterol, blood sugar as well. It's a very well recognized plan and is basically healthy choices with no processed foods and limited refined grains and sweets. It appeals to me cause there is no counting of calories, carbs, points etc. I think it's really something I can incorporate into a lifestyle!

I hear you on the exercise....can't do any real walking anymore and am limited to water walking and water aerobics. A stationery bike is supposed to be good for bad knees also I guess...haven't tried that.

Continued good luck on your journey!!

Having a rough day today...maybe it's the weather. Rainy here and I just want some comfort food! Have to stick with this though. One week down and one to go on Phase 1....then I can have my fruit and slowly reintroduce whole grains. Need to try some new recipes cause been eating the same basic things everyday...need some variety!

35down 10-04-2013 03:14 PM

Hi Sherrie! :hiya: Sorry you had a 'rainy weather comfort food calling you' rough day. Here's hoping for 'sunshine' tomorrow for you for sure.

Wishing you a good weekend.

Joni:)

Phase One...Week one weigh-in

Down 10.5lb from last Saturday when I started! :jumpjoy::clap::up:
I am so excited...and hopeful that this will be the answer for me. It's been really hard not having any fruit or grains this week....sorry but could never maintain an Atkins lifestyle....I give you all that can a lot of credit! One more week of Phase One and then I slowly incorporate them back in and see how my body reacts.

I have gotten rid of all my cravings and don't believe the difference in my pain levels with my arthritis. I know the water bloat is gone and feel so much better. What I love about this is that I'm not counting anything...calories, carbs, points etc. Just good healthy choices and portion control. The fast initial weight loss is certainly a motivator and I'm hoping I can manage 1-2lb/week in Phase 2....have a LONG way to go!

greengeeny 10-05-2013 10:42 AM

I don't know the rules of eating for Dash, but have you ever used Linda Sue's recipes?

Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes - Home

She has a knack for taking foods that are legal to eat and creating new and unique recipes that are easy. She has lots of comfort dishes on there. I have really only used her induction recipes, but she has so many on there. Give her stuff a try next time you want some type of comfort food.

greengeeny 10-05-2013 10:43 AM

Oh...and congrats my friend on the weight loss!!!! Fantastic job :)

Phase 1....Day 11

Down another 1.5lb for a total of 12! I am so hopeful this is the plan for me. :aprayer:

Saturday will be my first day of Phase 2 (when I can add back in the fruits and whole grains). We have had a day at the casino planned with friends long before I started DASH....a little concerned as I would normally just consider this a "cheat" day and stuff myself at the buffet. I'm planning on making wise choices and staying away from the dessert buffet entirely. I know the food is going to be full of salt and expecting a gain on Sunday, but will do my best.

My BG has gone anywhere from 110-125 back down into the 90's in this short amount of time and I've already had to come off one of my BP meds. I can truly say I'm not ever really hungry and have completely stopped my snacking after dinner. That used to be the time where I would search the cupboards and fridge for ANYTHING to eat while watching TV. I now occasionally will have a SF jello if the urge hits me.

I realize this is still the "honeymoon phase" and reality hits with Phase 2 and the addition of the carbs. For now I only plan on adding a fruit/day and some oatmeal...will see how my body responds to that.

Have to realize that all the little losses eventually add up! Haven't been very good at that in the past. After being on a plan for a week, I want 50lb gone! :stars:

greengeeny 10-08-2013 08:26 PM

ha ha, mee too!!! I want 50lb gone too!! BUT then I consider myself lucky that I even lost any weight considering all the crap I have gone through with my thyroid and not taking my hormones properly -_-
