This was from a thread titled "How did it happen" asking how we gained our weight and how we got determined to lose it.

I thought it belonged here as well:

I was thin or underweight my whole life until I turned 22 or 23. I developed a sleepwalking/ sleep eating issue. I would cook full meals and eat anything and everything while totally, 100% asleep. At age 22 I weighted 92 pounds. In 15 months I went up to 230!!!!! I did Atkins and in 10 months I was down to 112. I lived alone then and kept Zero food at home. NONE!!!! I ate breakfast and lunch in the hospital cafeteria and maybe a small salad for dinner. I ran 5-7 nights a week- that helped too. Eventually my spine got so bad that I walked with a cane then a walker so obviously running was no longer an option.

I stayed at induction level Atkins for about 4 years and stayed at 112 until I moved in with DW and her DD who was then 15. They expected that there would be food in the house and although I ate very little while awake, I ate everything that wasn't nailed down while asleep. In a year's time I was over 200 again.

I was very upset being overweight even though DW could care less. I told her that I needed her to help me not sleep eat so I could start a diet and get back to being me. Which to me is being thin.

For the first year of JUDDD we kept almost nothing in the house and went to the grocery store almost every night after work. When Hurricane Sandy was coming we had to stock up on non-perishables. I was terrified. Since then we have kept a bit of food in the cabinets, but not much and DW usually hides everything each night before she goes to bed.

I'm apparently not good at searching for food in my sleep. I seem to only look around the kitchen and never venture into the other parts of the apartment. She has some great hiding spots and sometimes I come across some things that she doesn't even want me to know about (like her candy stash )

It does take determination, but I have always been pretty determined. Just about different things at different times.

A good reminder to self...

This is what works for me and I don't know if it works for others, but I have to ask myself how badly I want something (How badly do I want to lose weight? How badly do I want to get a new job, etc...)

If I decide I really want it- then I'm going for it 100%. I definitely know what it feels like to be down or even depressed. When I have been it's been harder to commit to giving a 100%, but I have found I have only been really successful when "I say no matter what!" Such as "I will stick to my down day today No Matter What!" Or "I will not smoke a cigarette today- No matter what!" I just keep stringing one day of no matter what together till I get where I want to go and then I don't let my guard down either.

I am so excited for the spring. I can't wait for the longer day light, warmer weather, better mood, increase energy and decreased pain!

(I'll need to read this one day and here it will be.)

Congrats on the eviction of 4 pounds! I found coming to LCF daily helped me so much during my weight loss and continues to be invaluable during my maintenance.

Speaking of maintence... I saw a new low today
Gotta love 5:2 ing it and dropping a little here and there.

My 2 year JUDDDiversary is a week from tomorrow.
It has been the 2 most incredible years.
I love my JUDDD Buds

Hi Carly! Congratulations on your success and thank you for continuing to post and share your story to inspire the rest of us!! Your pictures are of course amazing and I love your new anniversary pic!

What struck me as I was reading here tonight is what you said about how hard DDs were at first, but then you started feeling really good on DDs. That is giving me encouragement to (maybe) decide to give JUDDD another serious try. Don't know for sure if it will work that way for me but I won't know until I try it!

Thanks for sharing!!

DD were really hard in the beginning. I didn't feel great and it was hard, but about 5 weeks in that all changed. I haven't had to look back since.

Knowing what you know now, is there anything different you think you could have done to make those first 5 weeks of DD easier (i.e. different food choices, timing, exercise or not, whatever)? Or do you it was just going to be hard at first no matter what?

Thanks for taking time to share about all this!

I think there is probably an adjustment period no matter what. I think the food choices I made were the right ones at the time (no breakfast, celery and dip for lunch, lettuce and tilapia for dinner), but now I'm better off if I don't eat at all till a bedtime snack.

I think the SIRTs need to build up and I'm a big believer that low DDs do this the best. I think around that 5 week point I was SIRT saturated and it became a piece of cake.

I keep my SIRTs flowing by have 2 DD each week under 300 calories in maintenance.

Just checking in before lunch! I seem to be doing okay on low Carbs... I think I will try to stick with this for a while... Just getting my feet wet... I like the idea of one day a week doing 300 calories, but don't want to upset the apple cart right now!! Thanks for the inspiration!

On 3/28/14 I had my 2 year JUDDDiversary.
It is incredible to me that it has been 2 years already and more than a year at or below goal.

I am so grateful for JUDDD, my wonderful and supportive JUDDD buds and for LCFs that keeps this wonderful place for us to meet and stay accountable.

I'm still in awe of how much my life has changed. I continue to become more confident and outgoing. I'm still shy by nature, but so far from where I came.

I never want to be a finished product. I want to remain teachable and continue to improve my whole being.

The Every Other Day Diet that Christa Varady has researched and written a book about works like that. JUDDD specifies a bit more detail. Thereís a calculator (on the JUDDD web site) that gives you a number of calories to eat on up days and on down days, thatís based on your age, weight, activity level, and how fast you want to lose weight.

JUDDD is pretty simple. If you have not done so already, Google The Alternate Day Diet by Dr. Johnson. You will get his website and calculator.

I haven't read Varady's book yet, but hope to catch up on a lot of reading when we cruise in November.

Did you say CRUISE??!!?? That's my most favorite vacation!! Where else can a woman not have to cook, make a bed, wish dishes OR clothes, drive, wipe snotty noses, or pick up after others! AND, you get room service & your bed turned down at night for you!! However, you can shop, eat & sight see to your hearts content! Have tons of fun!! I'm not sure if we'll get a cruise this year. But, we are thinking about it.

I agree that cruises are the best form of vacationing. We have done 2 fabulous cruises before and one mini cruise. This one is going to Mexico, Belize and Honduras. It's over Thanksgiving weeks- so where else can you get an amazing Thanksgiving dinner without even having to make a side dish?
