Well, phooey. But changing you WOE and losing weight will open other doors in the future I am sure.

On the bright side- it's Day 24 of carb clean livin'! You are controlling those things in your life that are within your power to control. Keep the momentum going!

Also - keep up the hope! You are getting your body nice and healthy! Either you will get to a place where you can do IVF or it will happen naturally or you can always consider other ways of creating a family!

My bf is adopted and I obviously think he's fantastic so I will just put that out there. There are NO weird family issues - just a lot of love and support. He has two brothers who are both his parents biological children.

Whatever happens - keep the hope!

I definitely have found that low carb helps with fertility! Try to think about how much healthier your future pregnancy will be after weight loss!

Good luck

DAY TWENTY-FIVE:

Good morning, all!

Just taking a break from cleaning the house to say that my body is definitely beginning to revolt against weight loss! I weighed in this morning (I like to do spot checks) and I'm one pound UP from my Wednesday weigh in weight.

My brain is beginning to play tricks; I start thinking maybe I'm eating too many calories.... I've proven this wrong because if I think back to all the days, weeks and months when I ate pounds of candy, cupcakes, any type of carb that caught my eye, including french fries (that I don't even like!) I can't imagine that my diet of protein and veggies (on weekends!) could possible amount to more calories than my past carb and sugar fests.

Typical saboteur thinking.

I suspect that I'm retaining water because my TOM is coming soon. It has to come back, I'm too young for menopause!

Have a wonderful low carb weekend, everyone!

When I had lost something like 65 pounds and then had a really long stall, one fellow said that maybe that's all I was meant to lose and something about being old and I should just learn to be happy at that weight. Like my age had anything to do with not deserving to be fit and healthy!!!??? (And I was a lot younger then!) I never did lose any more weight and then actually gained it all back.
I know this post is from a week ago - but I just saw it yesterday. It bothered me all day and I would like to address it.

If someone sends you a reply that you find demotivating - by all means say something. I inadvertently demotivated someone on another board. She was thrilled that she was at the deepest purple on the sticks and mentioned that some people think that means you're dehydrated but she didn't know how that would work. I explained how it worked and said she should drink more water and that any shade of pink is ketosis and she's doing great. Well, she got all upset and said she can't do anything right and blamed my post for her consumption of tons of cookies. I was glad she said something so that I could explain that drinking more water is healthy and that's what I was concerned about. I could respond and at least let the newbies know some of the science and that drinking water is important and not to get hung up on the shade of purple. And I also got to apologize to her for making her eat all those cookies. (even though I didn't think it was my fault, I felt bad that she did that. I also could have been a bit more - dainty- in my original post to her. Then she might not have taken it the way she did).

The comment that demotivated you seems like something I might post and I wouldn't have thought of it as a demotivater. I think that people are hung up on scale numbers a lot of the time and not health. It is possible to be fit and healthy at a variety of weights. I was seeing a weight loss specialist at a prestigious hospital for awhile. I picked a goal weight at the very top of the BMI range. The doc vetoed it and told me to go 15 pounds over because with my weight and my body composition, that would be perfect. I told him that the weight I picked was my high school weight and he told me I'm not in high school anymore. He also thinks BMI is crap - he says he just has the chart on the wall because people always ask to see it.

I'm not necessarily speaking to your situation in particular. I'm just saying that if someone posts something you think is demotivating, let them know how you feel so they can either explain or apologize. No one wants to shoot people down on a forum like this (even if it seems that way sometimes). And the oldbies do have a lot of wisdom to share.

I understand what you're saying and I have to clarify---I didn't find it demotivating, the thought of someone saying "I told you so" just kept me from posting. It really was my issue...

Now, that's not to say that about 10 or 11 years ago there weren't some very MILITANT low carbers here....I don't see that militant attitude with anyone anymore, simply because this is the low carb lobby and it emcompasses ALL forms of low carb. Back when I started in 2000-2001, low carb was basically Atkins, Stillmans and some Paleo---the people that followed those plans just wouldn't stand for the shenanigans that happen on South Beach...

I saw a woman get run off a low carb forum (can't remember if it was this one) because she said she was doing Atkins and she regularly ate jicama.

I didn't want to get into that all or nothing mindset again--it certainly didn't help me any of the other times I started low carbing....

Thanks for your input!

I know what you mean about the militant, my way or the highway posters. It was horrible on the usenet group when it was really active. They were a snotty little clique.

Those South Beach shenanigans are just out of control

If anyone knew for sure why we gain or stall when we stay on track and know we should be losing...at least a little....I'd love to know the secret! I see so many posts of those who eat healthy and don't deviate from what has been working for them and still see an extra pound or two, or no lossses, on the scale for awhile.

Its happened to me and I'm sure it will happen again.

You are doing so well and have such a wonderful perspective and attitude....hmm have I said that before?? lol

And I like how you mention a little disappointment, feel it and let it pass and keep on keepin' on. That's how success is accomplished, with all the ups and downs and hills and curves along the way.

Hope you and all the great folks here continue to have a good weekend!

to us!!!

DAY TWENTY-SIX:

Still on track, still in ketosis, but steadily GAINING by about .5 lbs a day. Not sure what the heck is going on, but I refuse to let this bother me. It's likely fluid.

Today I'm going out for lunch with friends. Hopefully wherever we end up has a caesar salad because I'm dying for one.

I'm making pork roast again for lunch this week.....

Have a great Sunday!

Sweetheart, it's very very normal to have a stall or slight gain in the 2nd or 3rd week of Atkins. So common that most of the books warn about it.

I've been doing this since April. I've had a couple of weeks where I've not dropped any weight despite my eating patterns remaining the same, and my weight regularly bounces up and down a couple of pounds during the week. Don't weigh daily. Once you settle into the diet the average loss is 2lbs per week - say you lose that all over 1 night (as I usually do) - you'll have 6 demoralizing days compared to one good one. Just weigh at the end of the week.

When I stay the same or see an upward fluctuation, I look at my food tracker:

Are my carbs at induction level? Yes, always.
Are my calories below maintenance level? Yes, always.

Ok then there is no way it would be physically possible for me to have gained *fat* - ergo the gain must be water and I am still burning fat so as long as I stay on plan and eat right I'll be rewarded for my effort. I always am.

Keep on trucking, and weigh weekly if possible.

Yeah, I've read that weighing daily can bum you out because the scale will be all over the place. As long as you're eating right and sticking to the low carbs I'm sure you're fine, mellie's sweetheart.

DAY TWENTY-SEVEN:

Good morning, all!

Thanks for the replies regarding my gains. You're both correct---it's maddening to weigh every day (and usually I don't) but I've been looking for signs of TOM, so I guess this steady gain is just TOM because it started today....whew. Late, but not so late that I'm worried about menopause.

I'm hoping for a vist from the whoosh fairy as soon as TOM has left the building!

I am now TWENTY-SEVEN days cheat free! Come to think of it, I can't remember the last time I remained completely cheat free for this long.

Good thought of the day:

I have two Christmas parties to attend for work this year--one of them requires that I travel about 5 hours away. I've researched the restaurants and I have my meals picked for both functions.

Good for you on the cheat free! I cheated this weekend so I'm back to day one today. I figure as long as I keep getting right back on the wagon, that's a good thing. Right? Lol

You're lucky to be able to get back on the wagon---I can't. It's so difficult that I just choose to stay on the wagon, rather than deal with the consequences.

Hey, I haven't read much of this thread but just wanted to comment on the fertility thing. The last time I did Atkins successfully I lost 4 stones (56 pounds I think) and as soon as I hit the 4 stone mark, I became pregnant WHILST ON THE PILL!! So I really do believe low carb does wonders for fertility, even though my pregnancy was unplanned it was the best thing to ever happen to me. I wish you the very best of luck.

Please get the menopause worries out of your head. It's perfectly normal to be late, even to skip a month even if you've never been late before. Especially when you've changed your diet so much. So sorry the preg test was negative but you've just started so I'm hopeful for you! You're doing great!

DAY TWENTY-EIGHT!

So busy today! Sheesh!!!

Just a quick update---TOM has arrived in earnest! Blah---but, I weighed this morning and I'm down a whole pound since yesterday which is great!

Hoping for a whoosh tomorrow but if I don't have one, I'll know it's because of nasty ol' TOM.

Weigh in day TOMORROW!!!!

Thanks, Abby!

I know I shouldn't worry about menopause, but at my age (41) it wouldn't be unheard of....the family myth is that my maternal great grandmother went into menopause at 37......

Hi Melle-
I just joined yesterday (but back again after many years away myself)and I was drawn to this thread! Love the positive attitude Girl

I'm only on day 2 but the good news is I've started. I read about The Diet Cure book on a thread here yesterday. I have terrible cravings too and I'm hoping there is some pearl contained in that book that will help right the brain chemistry that causes/contributes to that behavior. It may be worth your while as well. I'll let ya know.

Best of luck to you!!

DAY TWENTY-NINE

As predicted, my weight is up by .5 lbs from last week...likely caused by a very wicked TOM.

Still on track, still cheat free!

Welcome, Biochic!!!!!

I hope this thread an be a motivator----starting is the worst part and you're past that now! Good luck!!!!

Thanks everyone!

I forgot to share that I saw the doctor on Monday and he's very happy that I'm losing weight. He took my blood pressure and he was very pleased that it's so low!! Yay for me--I was worried about my BP being too high!
