Ghislaine's Journal

Hi! I've just joined as I've discovered the importance of support and a place to check in. I'm currently participating in a Biggest Loser competition which will last until the last week of February but I wanted to get started here too as it'll be important to continue having a place to check in after the contest is through. I'm also the only one on my team that's low carbing so I tend not to talk about what I'm eating with them, whereas I'll have no reservations about doing so here.

I'm basically following the Protin Power plan though I'm not stressing if I'm a few carbs over the 30 grams one starts with. Once I drop to below 40% body fat I'll bump up to 55 grams and see how that goes. I also prefer a whole foods approach with very little highly processed food. Partly due to allergy concerns and partly due to concerns as to it being healthy. So you won't see me using protein powders or the usual sugar substitutes with the exception of stevia extract. So far I'm very pleased with the 9 pounds I've lost the last 3 weeks.

I'd dropped down to a size 8 at 150 pounds following the 30 gram Protein Power 10 years ago though I'd started at lower weight then now. I never did make an attempt to find out what carb level my body would tolerate for maintenance so that'll be an important part of the current journey. There's been allergies discovered and a pregnancy since then. I'd actually lost all my pregnancy weight plus some, until I took some poor lactation advice and packed it all back on, right up to my highest while pregnant! I need to be in a maintenance phase before I'll try for pregnancy number two so here I am!

For this journal I will be making weekly check-ins with my stats and whatever comments and musings I may have about the week. The few following posts will be for the first few weeks of this year from when I started my commitment.

This was a little disappointing to me but I had allowed myself a cookie that I hadn't had a chance to eat during the holidays. It's one of those things that I'd promised myself to make but didn't so my first chance to have one of the ones my mom had made was this past weekend. Go figure it was stale and I only had one bite so I switched to a lemon square since I'd already decided to allow myself the one cookie!

Yay, my abdomen measurement is smaller then my hip measurement! I had some carb cravings this week that kinda crept up out of the blue. Or so I thought until I looked at the calendar! Yup, TOM is coming! I'm interested to see what effect it'll have on my weight loss.

Yay! I weighed myself this morning and I'm down a total of 10 pounds! I'm very happy to have reached this achievement. Now, on to the next!

Well, that half pound came back on, but I feel confident it'll go away again for next week's "official" weigh in. I didn't eat as well as I should have yesterday with all the running around I did. I stayed within my carbs but they weren't good solid meals. Does anyone else experience a woosh the morning after eating out at a restaurant? Somehow after that big salad, steak, and steamed veggie I can always see a drop on the scale!

I weighed in again this morning since I'd forgotten to do my measurements.

Weight ending (morning): 187lbs
Total Loss: 1.5 pound

Measurements: Hip / Abdomen / Body Fat
Ending: 41 / 40.5 / 40%

I knew that half pound would come off again! It kindly took an additional half pound with it. I did add a bit of unfiltered, unpasteurized Apple Cider Vinegar to one of my jars of water yesterday so there was a diuretic effect. It's supposed to have other health benefits though so I think I'll keep doing it to see what happens. Wow, Losing an inch on my hips really makes a difference to my body fat percentage! I'm very happy to be down to 40% as that was my target before trying to increase carbs. I think I'll wait another week to be sure to be under 40% instead of just being close enough that you round down to 40%.

Because this was the second week at a higher lean body mass I decided to recalculate my ideal weight range. That pound since my last weigh in is muscle! So with a healthy range of 21 to 27% body fat, my range has shifted to 143 - 155!

I had over last weekend given myself a free day so lack of weight loss is no surprise.

My near three year old insisted on being in my lap so I've typed all this with one hand. I'm done for now!

Another pound down and I'll match the weight I go to the last time I tried to lose weight! This was despite traveling and my cousin's Super Bowl party! I'm a little frustrated that I'm still rounding down to 40% instead of rounding up, but I'll get there!

It was interesting to note this morning that at the same weight last June I was 2 inches bigger at the waist. I'm not really sure what's so different this time around!

Scale stayed flat for today. I'm beginning to suspect that I need to be eating more vegetables. I didn't eat many yesterday because I need to make some more salad dressing. I'm allergic to MSG so that usually leaves me with the expensive refrigerated kinds, but I'm also picky about ingredients so my best bet really is to make my own.

I'm also going to look into more make ahead dishes like Linda's Just Like Stuffed Baked Potatoes which I adore! It could be a make ahead salad kind of thing like my favorite beet salad.

I just bought a jicama to try out so I'm excited to try something new.

Yesterday was a little rough. I pulled out over a serving of 72% chocolate but only ended up eating 2/3rds of a serving thanks to getting distracted by the Almond thin thread! I made a batch of them and tried them out with various toppings. I need to roll them out thinner next time but I love how quick and easy they were to make! I also love that the scale dropped another half pound this morning!

Thanks mummyzena!

I've decided to take a page out of your book and post one of my favorite recipes here.

CHOUFLEUR SOUFFLE
This has always been my favorite way of preparing cauliflower. This recipe came over from Belgium with my grandmother who would always make it with a roast.

1 medium cauliflower
3 Tbs. butter 3 Tbs flour
2 cups milk
1/2 lb. grated swiss cheese
2 or 3 large eggs separated
1/2 Tsp. nutmeg

Separate cauliflower into flowerets. Drop into boiling salted water and cook 10 min.
Drain and cool.

Melt 2 to 3 Tbs butter over medium heat and add 2 to 3 Tbs flour to make a roux. Take off heat and add 1/4 cup of the milk and whisk. Put back on stove whisking and slowly add the rest of the milk. When sauce is medium thick, add grated cheese slowly. When smooth take off heat and add the egg yolks whisking. Add nutmeg.

Beat egg whites and fold in.

Put cauliflower in a casserole and cover with sauce.

Bake at 350 F for 30 minutes till golden brown on top.

Weight is holding steady for the moment.

In the past few days I've made mayonnaise, blue cheese dressing, coconut milk chocolate mousse, and another batch of almond thins which turned out super cute because I used a small heart cookie cutter! I wonder about making a kind of cookie by somehow melting chocolate on the completed thins. Broken up of shaved chocolate for the last few minutes in the oven?

I think I'll be making a Boursin like spread tonight to go with the crackers.

Oh, and I don't think I'll be buying jicama again. I'll try it if I have the occasion to try it as prepared by someone else, but I couldn't tell if mine was a bad one or if I genuinely don't like it.

My scale still isn't budging! I think it's broken! I'm expecting a visitor this weekend so I may just be retaining and it'll drop off in a week or two. I'm doing well sticking to the food plan so I just need to be careful not to get discouraged!

Tomorrow is "official" weigh in so I'm interested to see what, if anything my measurements are doing.

Here's a picture of today's lunch: Wild salmon topped with a sauce made from sour cream, homemade mayo, dill, parsley, onion and garlic powders plus green beans on the side.

Yay! First mini goal achieved! I'm solidly below 40% body fat now. I actually didn't expect to show any weight loss this week because I think TOM is coming in a couple of days and the scale just hadn't been budging!

I just looked back at my *********** history to see that I was between 165 and 170 in 2007. That's another 15- 20 pounds from where I am now so I'm not sure I want to make that my mini next goal. Maybe I'll just make my next one be having to buy new pants!

Inspired by this thread: Impatience Killed The Cat .. or Why To Stop Obsessing and Tweaking ... I decided to pull in the data from ******.com and *********** to do a historical chart of my own weight. Very very little of it represents active weight loss attempts so the overall trend is upwards. That's reality so I wasn't expecting to see anything different. It is interesting to notice that the worst of the weight gain has happened in the last two years. Regardless, I now weigh the same as the result of last summer's weight loss attempts. I have made some decisions regarding weight loss goals.

170 before getting pregnant again. I'm hoping to start trying this coming summer so that's more then reasonable. My current weight tracking chart has a goal line on it that I'm hoping to trend downwards with. It's predicting that I could get down to my goal by this summer, which would be fabulous of course!

Another half pound drop this morning!

I'd been thinking about giving myself a high carb weekend this coming weekend since it's right in between my daughter's birthday and my own. But I'm finding enough interesting recipes for goodies to try that I'm thinking about continuing to put it off. Interestingly enough, my list of carby things I'd really like to have is very short and were always thing I only ate once or twice a year anyway, if that!

I'm thinking about the recent lemon tart recipe for my birthday and the black bean chocolate cake for my daughter's.

I'm hoping I can keep this pound down for my last Biggest Loser weigh in tomorrow! I'll be eating very clean today, that's for sure!

My daughter's birthday was last night so I made har a lower carb cake but I opted to use honey and sucanat as sweeteners so I'm waiting until tomorrow after my weigh in before having one.

Today was the last weigh in for the Biggest Loser contest I've been participating in. I've lost a total of 14.5 pounds and dropped almost 7% of my body fat. I'm now going to go up a level in Protein Power to the 55 grams carbs so we'll see how well I do with that. It's going to require more careful tracking since I'm not really used to allowing myself that much and am less familiar with the carb levels of foods at that level!

Today's weight: 185.5

My birthday was on Monday so I tried to allow myself a carb holiday. It's really had to get back on track but I'm getting there. I was 186.5 a couple of days ago so I'm headed back in the right direction now!

The Biggest Loser contest was a really good motivator for losing weight! I'm participating in a couple of challenges here in an attempt to keep that motivation going but they aren't quite as comprehensive as the Biggest Loser one was so I'm not sure it'll be quite as effective.

Okay, I'm back! I got a little off track after the birthdays but I was able to maintain my weight until I decided to start losing again. I'm such a rebel that way unfortunately. :/
I just weighed in at 187.5. I should do my measurements and go from here.

I'm headed in the right direction as the scale said 186.5! TOM actually started yesterday which is great because the time of bad cravings is over.

Eggs for breakfast yesterday, lunch was Korean Chicken Patties of which there's now a stash in the freezer since I made two batches. Dinner was blue cheese chicken with green beans and the cucumber salad I'd made with the chicken patties. I also made the two minute cake as a dessert because i was still feeling hungry after dinner.

Today I didn't really eat breakfast unless you count the cream in my herbal tea! Lunch was a salad with ham and cheese at my mom's but since that wasn't really enough I'm now eating last night's leftovers.

186 this morning! Yesterday was a little weird food wise. I did manage to have a decent dinner of curried chicken with green beans though. Survived the temptation of a Mom's Night Out spread. Treated myself to another two minute cake afterwards. I used a much smaller egg this time so it didn't come out quite so big. Good thing the extra protein isn't an issue though because our ducks laid two eggs yesterday! No more buying eggs for me!

185.5 Gotta love the first week of getting back to eating right! I ate some cheese in teh morning before heading out to garage sales. Got back later then i intended at 11am and made myself scrambled eggs with cheese. Lunch ended up just being an avocado. Dinner was Chinese take out from a place we hadn't tried before. I got a steamed scallop and chicken with veggies dip. The sauce was on the side which was kinda neat!

Same today. I made pancakes yesterday with some oat flour in it and had some corned beef hash at the restaurant for Mother's Day brunch (at 1:45). Between the higher carbs and not doing as well getting my water in, I'm probably doing pretty well to have stayed the same! Dinner was a rotisserie chicken and cucumber salad with sour cream.
