Vilya in 2012 - not the end of MY world!

Hey all! I'm new here, but I've been looking for a place to have a weight loss journal, and I think this is the place.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in Sept. 2011 and I'm doing LC to help control my blood sugar (along with Metformin).

I've been overweight my whole life, to varying degrees. At my heaviest, I was 285, about 6 years ago. I lost 65 lbs., gained 55 of it back, and then inexplicably lost about 20 lbs. between May and Sept. of 2011, when I was dx'ed with diabetes (I had no idea about the symptoms of D). Since then I have lost another 25 lbs. and gotten my diabetes under great control.

Low carb has literally saved my life. I have learned so much in the past 4 months and look forward to learning more.

So, right now I'm at 230 and have kind of stalled out. I've only lost about 3 lbs. in the past 2 months. I'm not overeating, but I definitely need to exercise more than the 2 walks a week I'm doing. I HATE to exercise, so this is the most challenging part. Sigh...

Anyhoo - I welcome comments and feedback and discourse. It's no fun to talk in a vacuum!

I hope I get up enough courage to post some pix in here.

You know what I find interesting? The first time I lost the 65 lbs., I lost the weight from my face and upper body, mostly. This time it seems to have come from INSIDE first, because my "tire" has mostly disappeared, while my face hasn't gotten as thin. I credit that to the LC eating. Bye bye, belly fat!

When I was this weight last time, my waist was about 3" smaller, which I attribute to me being 32 vs. 38, and because I was doing a lot of cardio kickboxing which tightened me up nicely. This time my exercise has just been walking. I really need to change it up, because I do want to lose some more inches off my middle. I'm wearing a 24 instead of a 22, at the same weight.

I'm not one of those people who can lose 15 lbs. and go down a size. After 45 lbs. I'm only down about 1.5 sizes. Does this get better as you lose weight when you're smaller?

I haven't been under 200 lbs. since I was 18 - that is going to change this year!!!

I have a couple of goals this year that I want to write down.

1. Get to 199.
2. Get back on a horse. I rode and showed horses for many, many years but had to stop when I got too fat. This year I will ride again!

YEAH!! I went shopping for new pants today, and I am down to a size 20!! I started as a 26, so this is a big deal to me. Can't wait to be in a two-digit size that doesn't start with a "2."

You know what the best thing about diabetes is? It's forcing me to stay on track and not eat cruddy food. Because I test often, I see what happens if I eat carbs or sugar, and the numbers scare me back on track. I am TERRIFIED of complications, and the fear is the best motivator I've ever had.

I CAN'T say "screw it" and eat a bag of chips, because that could potentially send me to the hospital. About a month ago I lost control and ate 4 big egg rolls. Not only did it shoot my BG up over 200, but I felt like POOP for hours afterward. That was a fantastic experience, because I do NOT want to feel like that again, nor have that BG spike.

Kind of a bad day. I ate a small popcorn at the movies and my BG went up to 126 and stayed there for over 4 hours. That's not terrible, but I'm usually at 110 or below, so that was high for me.

Then I ate a piece of flatbread tonight. I'm scared to check my BG right now. I will though, I need to stay accountable. Hang on...

OK, I'm at 102. That is not bad, but I'm usually in the 80's by this time of night, so I'm running 20 pts. higher than normal. I don't think I overate calories today, but definitely overdid it on the carbs. Back on track tomorrow! I'm making a nice pot of sausage and spinach soup.

Hi Vilya! Sounds like you are doing good!

It took me a while to go down a size but then the sizes went down much quicker...
The first size took me a long time because they were so tight when I started...

Keep up the great work.

Thanks for the encouragement! I'm happy with the 20, because that's 3 sizes down from where I started. Look out, 18!

Today is better than yesterday. Had my usual breakfast of bacon and eggs and coffee. Sometimes I have a cup of unsweetened almond milk, and I've discovered that if I mix in a spoonful of Torani raspberry SF syrup, it makes the milk taste like a milkshake.

For lunch today I'm going to Central Market for a salad. They have homemade dressings and offer grilled salmon as a topping - I love getting salads there. They also make kick-butt chili, so sometimes I get that, too.

For dinner tonight I'm making a pot of Toscano soup (from Linda's Low Carb site), and I will use that for lunches this week as well. The menu planning is the hardest part, as I never cooked before I got diabetes. I hate grocery shopping and cooking, but I'm doing it!

Doing well so far today.

Breakfast - 2 scrambled eggs w/cheese; 2 strips bacon; coffee w/HWC and liquid Splenda
Lunch - small bowl Toscano soup from Linda's Low Carb site. I used sage sausage this time around; it is YUMMY.

I work until 7:00 and it's now 3:00. I hope the soup holds me until I get home, because I don't have any snacks with me. Sometimes I have a cup of decaf if I get hungry.

Pre-lunch BG reading was 97, which made me happy. This morning I was at 112, which did NOT make me happy!

Don't think I lost anything this week. I have been holding steady for quite a while now, and not sure how to break the plateau.

Had a 101 this morning, then forgot to test until just now. 88, YAY!! Haven't seen anything in the 80's in over a week.

I'm stalled on my weight loss, which I think is due to a few too many calories. I've been tracking my food on Livestrong, and I'm eating about 1,800 calories a day. I think I'm going to have to decrease that a little bit and exercise more.

Ate a little over 1,600 calories today, which is an improvement. I don't think I'm losing this week, though.

I've got to do more exercise this week. It's good for my blood sugar, and hopefully will break this mini-stall. I've only lost about 5 lbs. in the last 2 months. I haaate exercise.

You are doing well, exercise is a tough one. Try to find something you enjoy doing and doesn't seem like exercise. Maybe a water aerobics class?

Good success to you on your journey, you are well on your way!

Thanks, Maggie!

I did get off my butt and exercise today - went ice skating, which is something I used to do in my 20's (like, took lessons and knew how to jump and spin and all that!). I have missed it very much, but had stopped because my knees got messed up.

Today was sooo nice! I still don't have the knee mobility I used to, but I can still skate around and do a few simple tricks. It was so much fun!!

Food so far today:

B: 2 scrambled cheese eggs; few pieces bacon scraps; coffee w/cream

L: probably will have a sausage, or a couple cheddar wurst and salad

D: no idea. Kind of in the mood for tuna salad...

I have got to start bringing some snacks to work. I ate lunch at 1:30 and it's now 5:30 and I'm starving. But I don't get out until 7:00! Going to take my fish oil pills with a big glass of water and hope that helps.

B: 3 breakfast sausage links; 2 eggs fried in the sausage grease and a little bit of butter
L: 2 hot dogs (hmm, I'm sensing a sausage theme today!); 1/2 cup Fage full-fat Greek yogurt w/1 drop EZ-Sweetz
Snack: nothing, darn it!
D: T-bone steak; salad; pumpkin bake w/whipped cream (sweetened w/DaVinci vanilla SF syrup)

Really would love to lose more than 1 lb. this week...

Blood sugar is bad today. Woke up with a 112, due to too much protein last night. And the reason it was too much protein is because I ate an entire rotisserie chicken. I'm going to have to add that food to my "do not buy anymore" list, because clearly I'm not able to control my portions.

I've made huge strides with my diet and my emotional eating problems, but they haven't disappeared entirely. If it hadn't been for my diabetes dx, I'd probably still be eating myself into an early grave. I'm actually thankful I got diabetes!

So far today:

B: smoothie (unsweetened almond milk, Greek yogurt, vanilla whey powder, 2 strawberries, 2 Tbsp flax meal, splash of Torani raspberry SF syrup)

L: Cobb salad w/Caesar dressing

I bought a can of almonds for snacks at work.

Two things I need to do more of: eat vegetables and exercise.

1. Veggies - I have never liked them, outside of a few. I am eating salad almost every day, but it's just lettuce. I should be eating a bigger diversity of veggies, and I'm just not. It's a struggle to force myself, because veggies taste gross to me. Always have.

2. Exercise - I am exercising, but nowhere near the amount I should be. If I get 2 days a week in, I'm lucky. My weight loss shows this. I've barely lost 5 lbs. in the past 2 months.

I sort of feel like, dang it, I have to deal with diabetes every freakin' day. Isn't that enough? I gotta exercise and eat vegetables, too? LOL Of course I know that both of those things help with the diabetes! I'm trying, I really am, but I need to try harder.

Today has been pretty good. I've been having some really strong cravings the past week, but it seems to have died down. Going to the grocery store is the worst. I go in with a list now, and get in and out as fast as possible, so I don't have to be around all that temptation for too long.

Usually by this point in the week I will know whether I'm losing or not (I weigh on Sundays), but this week I'm not sure. Have to wait another 3 days...

This week has been a little difficult, as far as food goes. I don't think I've overeaten, but my meal planning has been off. My apartment needs to be tidied up, too, and I notice that whenever I feel bad inside my apartment gets messier.

Think I will spend some time straightening up tomorrow and hopefully that will clear the fuzziness out of my mind, too! And still praying for some weight loss on Sunday!

Good luck on your weigh in today!

What kind of salads do you eat? Maybe switching up your lettuce choices would make you feel better about your veggie intake?

Hi there! I usually eat Romaine lettuce, but sometimes do switch it up with green leaf, or those spring mixes that have spinach and arugula and stuff. I try to at least have a salad daily, so I'm not totally devoid of veggies.

Lost 3 lbs.!!! Woot woot! I seem to plateau for 2-3 weeks, and then I will lose 3-4 lbs. all at once. This is the 2nd time it's happened like that. Don't care, I will take it! Love being able to update my stats.

I'm 6 lbs. away from my previous low, when I lost 65 lbs. about 5 years ago (then gained 55 of it back, ugh!). But I'm almost there, and I will hit that and MORE.

Great job! Love the whooshes!!!

Salad is basically my only veggie too, plus one eggplant a week. The other veggies I like are all the starchy ones. So salad is better than nothing, right?

Yup, salad is better than nothing! I had some raw broccoli with ranch dressing today, just to switch it up a bit.

Had Mexican food tonight. I ate 3 tortilla chips, and about half of 1 tortilla. I ate the insides of the enchilada and had some tortilla soup and fresh guacamole (made right there at the table). Blood sugar at 1 hour was 121, and 108 at 2 hours. Not bad at all. Will check again before bed.

I was off for 2 days and did absolutely nothing. I sat on my butt and watched TV and surfed the Internet and took naps. I felt slightly guilty, but not too much. After all, I am single and childfree, so have no responsibilities other than my dog.

I wanted to post my measurements. When I first started taking them, they were as follows:

Waist: 49
Hips: 53 (I think)
Chest: 45 (I think)

As of yesterday, they were:

Waist: 45
Hips 50
Chest: 43

I used to sometimes need a seat belt extender when I flew. I actually bought my own, so I wouldn't have to ask the flight attendants. Sometimes the belts would fit, but there were a few occasions where it was a struggle, so I bought the extender. Now I know I do not need one! Losing 4" from my waist is a big deal for me.

With LC, I have lost weight mostly from my gut, which in the past was the LAST place I would lose from. Just proves that the carbs like to settle on my stomach.

Have not exercised at all this week. That is and will always be the biggest struggle.

Wow- those are great losses! Keep up the good work!

I spent this past weekend doing just what you did- fo the first time in a long time...and I have a husband and children that could have benefitted from me getting off my behind. Sometimes you just need to relax without feeling guilty, right?

Weigh in tomorrow. Since I just lost 3 lbs. last week, I will be very surprised if I lose anything this week.

I have a friend who is LC'ing with me, and she's frustrated by her slow weight loss. I think she's lost 11 lbs. in 2 months. Personally, I don't consider that a bad thing! It's more likely to STAY off at that rate of loss. At 5 lbs. a month, that's 60 lbs. for the year. That year is going to go by anyway, and I'd rather by 60 lbs. down at the end of it.
