youthfuliz, lean and strong - 130 pounds, 25" waist

This journal is a continuation of youthfuliz' labor day challenge - 130 pounds. Feel free to stop by and comment.

I'm starting this new one, to confirm my goal of getting lean and strong, through exercising and eating in the Paleo way. I plan to reach my ideal weight, around 130 pounds with a 25" waist. A small waist will ensure that I have strong muscles and a youthful figure at 130 pounds. I won't mind if my weight is higher than 130 while my waist is below 25". Fitting in all my size 6 clothes, and a few size 4 dresses/pants would make me really glad.

Currently my exercise plan is
1. AM walk 3-5 miles daily. In summer and fall I'll walk outside, when the winter comes I'll use my elliptical trainer more, and also walk outside in the early afternoon to get enough sunshine. I may add some HIIT sprints in my walking when I feel like.
2. slowly add exercises in the afternoon right before cooking dinner. Exercising is a very good mood booster, and also gives me a good night's sleep.
3. Except for an easy walk, leave one day a week (Sunday if none taken earlier) as a rest day.
4. Have variations in the strength, length of the morning walks, and afternoon cardios/strength training, using the idea of power law training.
5. Exercise when hungry. Skip lunch sometimes and workout hard to earn dinner, just as the hunter-gatherers did - again power law applies.

Be sharp, be efficient, be lean and strong.

My goal going forward is to stick to good behaviors, exercise patterns that I talked about above, and as a natural consequence, reach my ideal body weight and shape. I hope to lose about 6 pounds per month, that'll bring me pretty close at goal weight by the end of this year. Then I hope to maintain and improve my strength and shape in the years after. I'll weigh-in every Sunday, with measurements.

08/21/11 Sunday 156.4
37.5~31.5~40

I'm copying my today's entry in the old journal here:

Raining today. So I did 4 miles on my elliptical trainer while listening to Schiller's online open course. Time went by fast and I burned 400 calories. My elliptical trainer is a small hands-free type, so I can carry weights in my hands - I did use weighted gloves, 1 pound each, and 3 pounds weights. So I got to exercise my arms too! not bad.

Today's food plan: lots of meat and vegetables. 1 fruit, and 1 oz nuts. I'll update once a day, not multiple times so that I cut down on internet time.

Love the morning walks, and it has been pretty easy to stick to. I guess I need some consistency in my life, to mix with the variabilities. Always work out first thing in the morning - that should be a good consistency. I vary on the distance I walk, the speed, and the places where I walk to keep it fun. Also I will start to add afternoon exercise on some days, and different types of exercises in the PM too. Lots of variations!

House-cleaning: fried chicken and half bottle of dry red wine were thrown away this morning. Do not buy fried chicken again. No wine unless it's a big celebration - like graduation, goal met, or NEW YEAR. No pizza. No icecream. No cakes. No other junks.

Drink water and tea only. Eat clean, natural food.

Next time I feel want to have some treat, and if I end up in the store, buy fruits, or vegetables and fresh meat to cook at home.

90% lean is fatty enough. No vegetable oils. Eat paleo. If mistake happened, throw the wrong thing out as soon as I can. I don't like to waste, so this should stop me from getting them in the first place.

Power walked for 3.5 miles, in 50 minutes. Love the morning sun and fresh air. So far I walked 32.5 miles in August, and the goal is about 56~60 miles by end of month. Then next month my goal is to walk 4 miles/day on average. I feel really good out there walking, and sprinting a little when I feel want to. My body feel energized and flexible, and my mood is GOOD.

Walked 3.5 miles in 50 minutes. Sunshine, a little breeze. Was a bit chilly when I got out, but warmed up later, or maybe just I warmed up.

36 miles so far, 60 is August walking goal.

Walked on my elliptical trainer for 5 miles today. Total walking distance for August is 43 miles so far. 60 is the goal.

Enjoy the morning walks, outside in the sun or in on the elliptical trainer when it rains. Will continue. Glad that I find some exercise that's easy to stick to - maybe since it's fun and doesn't exhaust me. And I like it when I sweat a little.

As to food, I'm doing pretty good lately, eating meat, eggs, vegetables nuts, a little cheese, and some fruits. I realize that to manage eating habit I need to manage my mood, and to manage mood, I need to take care of things that I need to take care - for example, work hard on my papers. When I make good progress on my papers, I have good mood, and good self-control when it comes to food. So I should face the challenge and thrive. I will get the papers done nicely, and get a job that I like.

I CAN DO IT WELL!! I AM GOOD AT THIS!!!

Now that's the right direction.

Walked outside briskly for 3.5 miles, in 50 minutes. Did a few sprints. I guess pretty soon I can try C25K W1 the sprinting style. sprint for 20 second, walk for 2 minutes? I've been enjoying my morning walks a lot. And I'm in a good mood all day too. Now I will go and get some quality work done.

Time management: today: walk was done at 8:30am, leave for school before 9:30am.

TOM's here. So I'm looking forward to a nice loss by next weekend.

It's raining here today. So I did 2.5 miles walk on my elliptical trainer - I was just about to walk 1 mile since this is the one day during a month that I would take a day off exercising, I just want to walk a little to keep this a habit, something I do EVERY MORNING - but after I started to walk I feel good, so continued to walk more and worked up a little sweat. This brought my monthly total to 53 miles, 7 away from my goal of 60 miles. I'm very glad that I'm close to goal and am already thinking of it. love the feeling of achieving!!!

I have been walking every morning for 16 days this month, and I notice my body has changed, especially my legs - they are firmer and thinner. Also my tummy is smaller which makes me glad looking at the mirror. I'm also using weights when I walk at home on the elliptical trainer so I hope to see my arms firm up soon too. So although my weight hasn't changed much yet, I know I'm gaining muscles and losing fat. What a wonderful transformation!!!

Hope everyone is safe and doing fine, especially the east coasters.

First day of the Fall semester. Walked 2 miles on my elliptical trainer while listening to online course. Will get busier this semester, but I will walk every morning, first thing, and make it a ritual, just like brushing my teeth and taking a shower. Part of morning wakeup ritual.

And the next thing I will get into a habit, is to focus on my papers, and work in school most of the day and evenings. Optimism, passion, and hard work. And whenever there's difficulty, take the challenge, cope, and find ways to deal with it. I have all the potentials, keep working on realizing them.

Walked back from school, add 1 mile. Will this be a ritual? At least twice a week.

Walked to school, the short way (no bus), 1.8 miles. Walked back from school, the long way (no bus), 2.7 miles. Today's total is 4.5 miles, this month so far 60.5 miles. Met my goal of 60 miles. Will do 3.5 miles tomorrow (I guess 2.5 miles in the morning, and 1 miles in the pm) to make August's total 64 miles. love walking!!!

Walked 1.5 miles today. August total 62, feeling so good to meet and exceed my first monthly walking goal!!!

September, I will be very busy. Plan to work in school to 10pm, 6 days a week. On Sundays I will work half day. I NEED to walk daily to keep my body flexible and energized for most of my working hours I will be sitting in front of a computer.

So here's my September goal:

1. walk every day. 2 miles ~ 4 miles. Monthly goal: 90 miles.
2. do turbo jam or sculpt once or twice a week.
3. lose weight to 148, and waist down to or below 29"
4. sleep before 11:30pm every night. wake up at 6:30am.

I CAN DO IT, I'M REALLY GOOD AT IT

Super busy for the next 6 weeks. So I may not update here daily. But I'm walking everyday and update the walking thread.

September walking thread

I will definitely update this journal at least once a week, or whenever I feel want to talk about my day.

3 days into September, I have walked 14 miles so far. The September walking goal is 90 miles. I probably will increase the goal in mid month, will see. Enjoy every minute of it. I'll let myself rest when my body wants it. Will walk 2 miles in the AM when that's the case. I'm in love with walking and am enjoying better mood and focus while working on my paper. Added sprinting here and there too, and enjoy that too.

Moved my September walking goal to 106 miles. That means 25 miles/week + 2 days at 3 miles/day. I'm doing fine in the first week. 6 days, 23 miles so far. Plan to do 3 miles tomorrow - it's going to rain, so I will walk on my elliptical trainer for 3 miles first thing in the morning.

Things I should do when I feel I want some comfort food:

1. take a warm bath/shower
2. eat meat + lots of vegetables
3. have a nice soup
4. have a nice cup of tea
5. go shopping/watch a movie, etc

What if bad junk food was bought:
throw out the package as soon as I feel bad about eating it. and do not buy it again.

I'm getting a lot better at this - I don't crave as often as before and I stop much sooner. But I'm tired of doing housing cleaning and tired of feeling dumb afterward. So no more junk food. No more dry red wine, period.

And I have been walking daily, except for yesterday, for 28 days.
September goal is 106 miles. I have walked 29 miles as of today. Will try to get 23 miles done in the next 5 days. that is 5 4 5 4 5. I CAN DO IT!!!

38 miles walked so far this month. The goal is 106 miles. If I walk 4 miles/day, I will definitely meet my monthly walking goal.

Eating well and my weight is going back down. Not feeling bloated any more.

09/16/11 Friday

Finished a paper this week. Working on a new one. Decided to add more exercise in the PM, for Monday, Wednesady, and Friday.

Plan for next week: walk at least 2 miles every day (between parking lot and school). Then for 4 days, walk more - total 4 ~ 6 miles a day - just did 6 miles today, feeling good about it, so it's doable, and has been done.

For 3 days, Monday, Wednesday and Saturday: do turbo sculpt for 40 minutes in the evening, before dinner, and may add 2 miles on the elliptical trainer if I feel want to. Eat vegetables only for those nights.

Friday should be a 6 miles day, hopefully more. Let Saturday or Sunday be a rest day - only 2 miles easy walking, preferable outside. Need to take in as much sun as possible when it's nice outdoors.

M: 2 miles + turbo sculpt + 2 miles
T: 2 miles + 2 miles
W: 2 miles + turbo sculpt + 2 miles
T: 2 miles + 2 miles
F: 2 miles + 4 miles
S: 2 miles + turbo sculpt + 2 miles
S: 2 miles

Weekly total: 28 miles + 3 sessions of turbo sculpt (40 minutes each).

I CAN DO IT. USE EXERCISE TO RELAX AND CELEBRATE.

Haven't updated for a week. Caught a cold and didn't work out much for the last three days. TOM arrived today, so I'm hoping for a nice loss within the next a few days.

This month's walking hasn't been very consistent. I wanted to walk every day but so far I have taken 5 days off, including the last 3 days. I guess my plan was a bit unrealistic. Right now I'm at 61 miles, don't think I'll make the monthly goal. So I'm hoping that I can walk consistently for the rest of the month, 6 days a week, and make the monthly total at or slightly above 80 miles.

And, eat well for the rest of the month. I'll weigh-in over the weekend.

One week left in September. I'm not 100% happy with my performance, although I'm 80% happy that I did make some important stuff happen, and I did walk 65 miles so far this month. I'm getting better. And I should do very well in the last week of September.

Self-control is like muscle, the more you use it, the stronger it become.
I should exercise that muscle more often.

Decided to exercise my self-control muscle more. And today is a good start. Walked 5 miles on my elliptical trainer while watching an online course. Will make this a ritual. First thing in the AM, within 20 minutes of getting up, walk 3 - 5 miles while watching online course. Such a nice way to start the day! I will be 148 pounds by end of October. 136 pounds by end of December.

Add 2 miles to today's walking mileage = 7 miles total. It was a very nice day and the boys and girls were all playing outside. Parked pretty far from office so I added 2 miles walking in between. Perfectly happy about it. Now I'm getting close to meeting my goal of 98 miles for the month. Let's DO IT!!!

PM weight: 154.8 pounds

My body knows I'm getting serious and gets ready for a more active lifestyle.

Need to get some serious work done today. Should have great focus after workout.

Just entered my weekly weight goal (153) in the main lobby. Went back to read my earlier posts and realized that I went on celebrating last time I was under 150 pounds - I was at 149.8 and went MIA for almost 2 months...

So obviously my first mini goal is to get below recent low - I want to be 148 by end of October - but the more important goal is to keep exercising and eating right CONSISTENTLY after I reach goal so that I maintain the loss and get even healthier and stronger.

I will always make exercising and eating well, and weighing in every weekend as the most important goal.

Add one mile to today's walking mileage - parking to office - beautiful day. Now back to work.

I'm thinking maybe I can do a few sessions of C25K in the next week and October, before it gets too cold. Last time I tried to start C25K I lost weight pretty fast. Although I didn't continue for too long... my feet hurt (bought better shoes after that). Now that I have been walking almost daily for over 40 days I think I have built some stamina, so maybe I'll do better this time if I try C25K.

Will try to put in a session or two next week, if weather allows. Got new sweatpants for running in case it's chilly.

Also, if not next week, I'll start in October to add in PM workout - turbo jam (1) + turbo sculpt (1) per week. I Plan to reach goal of 98 miles for September, and make October's walking goal 102 miles - to maintain the same daily mileage as in August and September. Since I'm getting stronger I'm adding Turbo jam workouts, while keeping the walking mileage. Hope to get to 148 by end of October.
