Another great day! First I want to log yesterday:

Friday, July 15:
Breakfast: 2 sausage patties, coffee with Splenda and heavy cream
Lunch: Atkins shake
Dinner: steak with mushrooms, mashed cauliflower with butter and heavy cream
Snacks: 3 oz cheese

Calories: 1415
Fat: 113 g
Protein: 80.6 g
Net Carbs: 15 g

I think I have figured out part of the reason for my "funk" or recent struggles. I developed anemia while pregnant with my son, and I've been taking iron supplements on and off since he was born. I take a really great daily multivitamin, but it does not have iron in it. I haven't been taking any iron, and I was feeling really run down and lethargic, and I was turning to food as a pick me up. I started taking my iron again on Wednesday night, and I've been having good, energetic, on plan days ever since. Even my husband can tell the difference when I remember to take it! So, note to self, TAKE THE IRON!

Thanks Twyla! I'm in Charleston, about 90 minutes from Manning. I love your avatar pic - you are so healthy and STRONG!

Today's recap:
Breakfast: 3 egg omelet with cheese and bacon
Lunch: small steak with a side salad, broccoli
Dinner: 2 preservative-free hot dogs with reduced sugar ketchup

Calories: 1893
Fat: 151.7
Protein: 102.7
Net Carbs: 20

We were on the go most of the day, so I didn't drink as much water as I would have liked. I also didn't make it to the gym today, so I'll be going during naptime tomorrow! We had a great day shopping as a family, and buying new toys and shoes for my little guy.

Stephanie, we have friends that bought a home on Wyboo Lake and we stopped to see them on the way home from vacation. It's beautiful there. And that's a great place to live, all the amenities, etc. Very nice.

And thanks re the pic.

Hopefully your little one liked the gym. Most children don't want to leave when the time comes if it is a good area!!!

You are doing great. KUTGW

All the talk about gyms is making me more determined to spend more time in them. I just have to do it!!

Hi Seabreezes! I highly recommend more time in the gym - I'm quickly becoming a big fan! I want to be like Amber and Twyla one day.

He did great in the nursery! He didn't even cry for one second. I only rode the stationary bike for 20 minutes, so I didn't leave him for long, but he just played with cars and trucks the entire time. When I went back in to get him he looked up and smiled at me but kept playing. He didn't even run over to me. He's going to go back Wednesday morning, and there will be a couple of kids his age there at that time. The workers are really nice and I found out they will be renovating and expanding the nursery so it will be even nicer!

So, as to why I rode the stationary bike - my son broke my toe this morning! He somehow stomped on and kicked my toe at the same time. I've had a broken toe before and I went to an urgent care center and all they did was tape it badly, so I'm not sure if I'm just going to ice and tape it myself or go to the urgent care center again. I am not happy about my toe - it hurts to walk right now, which is going to put a dent in my workout plans for the week.

276.5 this morning!

Amber, I think I can do all of my weight exercises still. I plan to go to the gym tonight and I can at least ride the stationary bike and do the weights. I'm going to try wearing different walking shoes tonight to see if I can walk in those. If not then maybe I can swim for some of my other workouts? I'm going to the gym, broken toe and all!

"Seabreezes - When I was working out at the gym on Sunday I watched something on TV about Hawaii. It made me envious of you. We hope to take a vacation there in 5 years for my Mom's 60th birthday"

It really is a beautiful place to vacation in. Hope your plans work out. It is a long flight from where you live, but you can recover once you get here!!

You are doing so well on your weight loss and will be a little thing by the time you get here!!

So sorry about your toe. I broke mine hitting a chair in the middle of the night in a cabin on a ship. It took a long time before I could wear a real shoe. Since I wear sandals 99.9% of the time it was not a huge problem.

Your upper body will just have to get used to a great workout as Amber said.

Hair cut day and errands and then a swim. Putting dinner in the crockpot so won't have to do anything later.

Have a great low carb day!!

Seabreezes - Sounds like you've got a great day planned! I know it will be a haul to get us out to Hawaii, but my husband and I plan to treat my Mom for her birthday. My son will be 6 then, so I think he'll be able to handle that long of a trip.

I think my toe might not be broken after all! It still looks like someone took a hammer to it, but I can walk today! I somehow managed to pull my back at my Mom's house today though. Every day I pick up and carry a 30 pound toddler with no problem. Today I just stood up from her couch and somehow twisted my back in the process! I can barely stand up straight. I'm taking it easy until my husband gets home, then maybe a hot shower or bath will help loosen it up. I won't make it to the gym tonight, but I'll go in the morning.

We spent a little time with my Mom today and she immediately told me I looked thinner. She thought I looked more toned. I think I've nearly convinced her to join the gym with me! It feels so good when people notice.

I jotted down these goals over on Amber's journal, and I decided to paste them here too.

1 - Be a fit and active Mom who can do anything with my son
2 - Be a healthy example for my son
3 - Be able to wear stylish clothes from any store
4 - Run a 5k
5 - Walk a 10 K effortlessly (well, relatively effortlessly)
6 - Hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon
7 - Not be mortified every single time someone tags me on Facebook
8 - Never have to check the weight limit on a seat or hammock, and never glance nervously at the chairs in a room before choosing one to sit in
9 - Never have a 2 as the leading number of my weight again
10 - Never listen to another freaking doctor lecture me about losing weight. (Oh really doc, you mean I'm overweight, I FORGOT TO LOOK IN THE MIRROR THIS MORNING AND NOTICE THAT!) Sheesh.

Aww, thank you Amber! It's so strange to me that I love the gym so much. I've belonged to gyms before, I've even belonged to THIS gym before. I guess the time has to be right and we have to be READY for it!

My back is giving me fits still. It spasms if I do anything other than stand up perfectly straight or sit up perfectly straight. My husband had to take my socks off for me, because I couldn't bend over. No gym today. I'm going to try alternating ice and heat on my back and gently walking around the house today. I really hope it feels better soon. I can't pick my son up!

Oh no, what did you do to your back? IS this a lingering problem or did you aggravate it? One thing, make sure someone at the gym shows you how to use the machines, set the set, the weights etc, that is really important especially if you have low back problems, there are some good back extentsions you should do when you are feeling good, I do them everyday at the gym, abs and back, I never get the nagging low back pain I had before!!!!!!

Amber - I actually hurt my back by standing up! I think I turned to look at my Mom while standing up and twisted it - I felt it immediately right across my lower back. It's almost funny, I carry around and pick up a toddler daily, I've started working out and none of those hurt my back, I hurt it by standing up!

A trainer did show me how to use all of the machines I'm currently working with, and if I want to do something new they will show me how.

I've been doing a lot of lower back stretches since I delivered my son, and they have made all the difference in the world. I've never really had a problem with my back, but after my pregnancy I would always wake up stiff. The stretches helped with that.

I'm sure I'll be back to normal in a few days, or weeks at most. My husband is working from home today so he can handle the heavy lifting and I'm taking it easy. I think my back is a little better already. I'm hoping I can go to the gym and at least walk on the treadmill or the track by Friday night. I love Friday nights at the gym - it is quiet and I can just do my thing and watch the city outside the windows!

Good morning everyone!

275.8 this morning.

I had a hard afternoon yesterday, I spent the entire day resting my back and I was so bummed by the end of the day that I just wanted to eat something. Obviously emotional or driven by boredom. I stuck with it though, ate on plan, and today the scale is down a little more! I find it's easier to eat right when I am busy and active.

Today my back is feeling a lot better. It still hurts some, but I can get up and move.

I have a meal out at a friend's house tonight. I'm taking LC stuffed mushrooms, and I know there will be a salad I can have, but I'm not sure what else will be served. Saturday night I am taking my husband out for my birthday. I am planning to eat slightly off plan that night, but I'll stick to eating perfectly the rest of the weekend and hope for the best!

Oh, today marks one week back on plan, so I just ordered my makeup reward! I had an ULTA gift card leftover from Christmas, so I used that and splurged on some eye shadow and two new eyeliner pencils! I have not bought new eyeshadow in ages, it's probably well past time to throw the old stuff out.

Stephanie- good for you ordering something non food related as a reward!!!! I would eat some protein before you go to dinner tonight, so if there is nothing to eat you will be full! If you know you are going out with hubby then try to be careful tonight, you can do it!!! You are almost back to your lowest weight!

Oh gosh, I meant to say I am taking DH out for his birthday! It's his 40th birthday and we are going out to a nearby resort for dinner on Saturday.

Amber, thanks for the advice! (And thanks for noticing that I'm almost back to my lowest weight!) I'm making something with chicken sausage for DH and DS tonight, and I'll eat some of the sausage before I go. It's only 1 carb for a large link and lots of good chicken protein.

My plan for the next few days:
Today - Eat right today and at dinner tonight
Friday - Eat right and go to the gym. Walk on the treadmill or track.
Saturday - Eat very low carb on Saturday and do my best at dinner. (Some carbs are OK, but ordering pasta, for example, would not be)
Sunday - 100% back on plan.. Go to the gym in the afternoon. Use the weight machines if my back is up to it, if not walk.
Monday - My son has a reservation in the gym nursery, so I'll be back to the gym.

I am going to be slow and careful getting back to the weight machines so I do not hurt my back or make it take any longer to heal.

Stephanie, I wanted to stop in to encourage you to continue to do your stretching exercises, every day if possible. As you continue to stretch and make it a part of your routine, you will find that your flexibility will continue to improve over time. The more flexible you are, the less likely you are to injure yourself, whether it's your back (common) or another muscle group.

Light short spurts of cardio is a good way to warm up before weight lifting, but I have found that for ME, doing some light hamstring stretches and such (mostly Callanetics stretches) helps to limber me up and prepare me for my lifting. It has been said that static stretches BEFORE lifting can adversely affect strength gains, but I have to weigh the pros and cons with an eye to what I feel is best for MY body.

That said, I used to have occasional episodes of back pain from having "twisted" or turned a bit too suddenly, or even something as simple as bending over to remove clothes from the dryer. That was BEFORE Callanetics became a part of my weekly routine. It has given me far more flexibility and has -- knock on wood -- prevented the recurring episodes of back injuries.

Try to spend 5-10 mins every day with stretches, and ESP if you plan to do any lifting that taxes the lower back muscles. And it's a good idea to get into the habit of stretching, esp hamstrings, after each lifting session. Slow, static stretches, no bouncing, relax into the stretch, cleansing breaths, and remember to breeeeeeathe.

Also, as you begin to work on increasing core strength (which Callanetics is excellent for), your back will become stronger as well. So make sure you incorporate exercises that help to strengthen your core and do those no less than twice a week.

Flexibility and core strength are two things that should GOVERN all of your fitness goals and move you farther along on your way to better health and vitality.

You have a great attitude and are showing great discipline. Keep up the good work.

And lastly -- when you head out the door for dinner tonight, keep a mental picture of yourself -- the way you dream of being -- in your head. Hold on to that visual and let it guide you in your choices tonight.

Enjoy dinner...and have a great day.

Twyla makes some good points in there, I know I need to stretch more and in fact me and my trainer were talking about that, she always seems to end with abs and then I just want to run out of there, and get away before she thinks of the next killer move,LOL but I know I should spend a few extra minutes stretching, and I find after running too! I will walk the first lap and then the last lap and again I am so gad to be done I don't spend enough time doing that properly! I bought a pilates tape to help with that specifically and have I opened it? NO!!!! I always do the lower back machine near the end, strengthening your abs and core will help with the back torubles, my back was always aching, and now since I started doing that I have no pain, it used to be really bad after running!

Hubby- Happy 40th!!!! Have fun!!!!!

Twyla - Thanks for the great insight! I do stretch after every workout, it's almost my favorite time at the gym. I have found a quite corner with mats and there is never anyone there. I need to incorporate stretching every day, and do more stretches. Today I feel like the stretching and increase in activity have helped my back - I can't even tell that 2 days ago I couldn't move. It seems to have healed remarkably fast?
Thanks for the Callanetics recommendation! I have the 10 in 10 DVD, which I purchased after seeing some posts by you in another thread about a month ago. I haven't done much with it yet, I need to pull that out too. I think I should do that on the days I don't go to the gym.

Amber - Thanks for the birthday wishes for my hubby! I remember taking him out for his 30th birthday like it was yesterday, which makes me feel old, and is a very concrete reminder of just how long we've been together.

The dinner last night was a fantastic time with new friends! I didn't eat perfectly, but I didn't have any sugar either! I am right back on track today. My appetite is very low and my cravings are non-existent. This is just how I like it! Hoping to see a nice number on the scale in the morning!

ETA - I bought a new shirt today! Size 1x.
