Ok. So here goes. Remember, I only have sock monkey kids...so take this advice with a grain of salt.

1. Talk to dh. Give him a chance to get on board with you. Explain it. Entreat his help and guidance. And if he won't? Da, da, dunh...haul out the iron glove and let the campaign begin!

2. You are the mom. You do the shopping. You control what comes in the house and what doesn't. (to an extent - thank you Daddy Doughnut), BUT, you can eliminate the junk foods from your shopping list.

3. Start making homemade low carb treats and limit them for EVERYONE. Put the whole house on a lifestyle change.

4. Start walking with your kids at night. After dinner, instead of sitting around watching tv. Do an outdoor activity. Walk, ride bikes, play dodgeball or kickball, set up a badminton set in the back yard, play basketball or vollyball or tetherball. Anything to get them active.

5. Make this a family wide mission to get and stay healthy. Talk to the kids and explain the mission. Get them on board so that when they are at camp, they understand that each can of coke has 1-1/2 cups of sugar in it. That each bag of chips has x-amount of whatever in it.

And that way, you aren't singling her out. Maybe make it about you. Tell them you are sick of them having their way with sugar at night and you can't/won't participate. So therefore you are putting the family on a health campaign. Explain about skinny fat people!

Good luck. I imagine it's gotta be desperately hard!!!

With only a few changes to her diet and more activity, the good news is that she can grow into those 10lbs. My niece each summer would bulk out, then have a 3-4" growth spurt. My sissy and I joked it was like watching a catapillar or a slinky!

Oh! And make your own darn cheese peanut butter crackers. Nuke cheese slices till crisp. Then spread with peanut butter. Hubby won't be able to eat as many of them! They are filling!

WOW this makes me very teary eyed. You are on a slippery slope either way. I had a horrible experience where my mother did a great job ruining my self esteem by going about this all wrong. First thing is she sees herself everyday. She knows she has gained weighed. She knows how her clothes feel on her. I think the best way to deal with it is to go about it as she is helping you. Show her your progress and just let her know that getting it off is some much harder than never getting the weigh on. Tell her you need her to help you count your points, or to walk with you. If your husband eats like that and the boy does too, you won't just be able to say you aren't buying junk food anymore. The issues of the stepmom thing may turn ugly and a huge revolt could ensue. Talk to hubby and try. Keeping sweets out of the house only works at home. She will seek them elsewhere but at least you won't add to it. And don't forget...I don't even have sock puppets!!! I only speak from experience of being a chubby kid. She has to not want to be the chubby kid. You can only be a good role model.

Thanks, Poot. Those are all great ideas. I did talk to DH last night and he was very understanding and agreed to everything I proposed. The other thing I decided is that when school starts she isn't buying lunch, I'm packing healthy lunches for her. I've always let her buy 2 or 3 days a week because it was easier for me after working all day and making dinner for everyone not to have to pack a lunch for her and DH before I start my night job of laundry, giving her a shower, supervising her reading time and putting her in bed. But it has to be done. Last year I bought her this cool laptop lunch box, which is like a bento with all he compartments so I will fill it with healthy lunches and I feel confident the weight will come off. Summer is tough because she's at camp and I know she sneaks junk food from friends, which they aren't allowed to do in her school. I feel better having a plan and knowing DH is on board with it.

Dont even get me started on the darn school lunches, it is terrible what they think is healthy to feed these kids, and the kids want to buy more junk besides the junky lunch, WTH?? We didnt have junk options in school in addition to lunch? Now they can by cookies, ice cream, etc, I think that should not be allowed in schools!

Don't even get me started on school lunches!!!

Yes, pack! Yummier, healthier, yummier....talk up how crappy school lunches are...kids love "dissing" school lunches! Discuss how the 2 of you can make a better lunch. Let her pick fruit, etc. she may want. Maybe get cookie cutters to make shaped cheese crackers...fun, healthy, and yummy. You can always crisp up the left overs for you and hubby! LOL

I about fell over one day at lunch when a boy pulled out a pork chop from his lunch box! Sadly, he was def not LCing, but caught my interest!

Making some healthy yummies together may make her want to eat them too.

Getting hubby to help is going to be key tho. Making it a family thing is important. Maybe track the progress for each of you...not just weight/measurements....how many sit ups, how far walking, biking, etc. kids love seeing progress on charts....stickers and charts are in stores now for teachers and back to school. Maybe set rewards for goals for each of you...healthy ones of course!

Was never the chubby kid, but have seen too many It is hard seeing them deal with it.

Why isn'tthe lottery money going toward improving school lunches? Yea we were able to buy ice cream, cookies, slim jims, oh the horror. So glad he is all onboard! In high school mom and I did WW together. I made our lunches everyday. She stopped being such a negative naggy pants and we both lost weight. You are doing this from a health prospective, unlike a mother who shall remain nameless. I love the idea with stickers and a fun chart. Another fun exercise is hoolahooping together.

Kitty...I knew a girl that had pork chops for lunch...LOL We were like WOW. She eats dinner at lunch?

I actually wasn't the fat kid, just a tad bigger. But I was still popular cause I'M SO AWESOME.....LOL (and I could slap the crap out of anyone who didn't think so...hhahahah)

I'm luck because DD is such an easy going kid. I told her we are just all trying to eat as healthy as possible. She actually is really amazing at hoola hooping!

Some great advice in here. I too worry about my 12 year old sons weight. He will be in 7th grade this year and I'm planning on packing his school lunches because I know they will be much better for him then what they serve at school.

The changes I've made so far this week include:

--Putting Crystal Light in her water bottle to take to camp so she's not tempted by juice

--Giving her a big fruit salad when she comes home from camp that I top with a FF yogurt. I make the salad the night before so I can just spoon it out when she gets home. She really likes this snack.

--Letting her have a WW ice cream every other night after dinner. I'm not an ice cream person so I didn't even know about all these WW choices but they have cones and ice cream sandwiches that are only about 140 calories and she likes them.

It's important to me that I keep emphasizing to her that this is about health, and she definitely seems to get that. She's a pretty honest kid and I know if she didn't like any of these changes she would say something, so I feel really good about this.

Thanks for all your support and great advice!!!

Well, I'm a big old emotional mess today and already cried to DH and thought who else can I cry to? Oh yeah, you guys!

This week I've been to the wake for a close friend's mom and Saturday will be the funeral of my aunt who lost her battle with ovarian cancer this week. I'm just a water works today. I've been crying off and on since I woke up and can't seem to get any work done. Maybe part of it is that my aunt was the same age as my mom. I don't know, I just feel sad but also truly grateful for my family, my kids, my friends and all of you. DH was sweet and said he would grill me some chicken tonight and pour me a glass of wine and just listen to whatever I need to talk about. Of course that made me cry too! :O

So hug your loved ones and be good to yourselves. Love you all!

Well, according to my scale I weigh 40 pounds. I think it's time for a new scale. I've been hating this one since I bought it.

I'm crazy busy between work and end of summer/camp/start of school. Ugh!! So much to do. And DD's bday is coming up in 2 weeks so there's her party with her friends and her big family party on her actual bday, which is the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. The good news is the dietary changes I've been doing with her are stll going strong and she is happily eating fruit for snack every afternoon and has been choosing yogurt or a smoothie for breakfast every morning instead of her usual waffle or bagel. I'm very happy with this and so is she so life is good!

I still haven't bought a new scale. One ticket to Procrastination Station, please.

I hope everyone had a nice weekend. I got together with very old and dear friends on Saturday afternoon. I hadn't seen some of them in many years and it was great catching up. We all worked together at one time on a newspaper in NYC and have since gone in very different directions. DH made chicken and grilled veggies for us on the grill and everyone was impressed with the healthy but delicious spread, not to mention the culinary talents of my DH.

This is DD's last week of summer camp. She will be sad when it ends on Friday but we have 3rd grade to look forward to in just a few weeks. Can't believe my baby will be in 3rd grade already. Where does the time go??

After posting about my recent lack of exercise and then hearing this morning about Rosie O'Donnel's heart attack I decided this lazy butt was getting on the elliptical this morning. So, I did my 20 minutes and I feel great.

Poot, I don't notice a difference in DD's moods but she's 7 and tends to be overly energetic no matter what she's eating or doing. But she is the one choosing the yogurt for breakfast now and asking for water instead of juice (although she still tries the "Can I have soda?" every night for dinner). I talked to her about how I will be making her lunches this year for school and said she can buy occasionally if it's something she really wants like pizza or tacos. I don't want to make her feel like she's forbidden to have anything "good" because I know that will just make her sneak lots of junk.
