A Newbie's Journal - by CardioBunny

Hey yall!!

I found this forum yesterday after deciding to go the low carb way of life. I'm so glad to have found such a knowledgeable and helpful resource. I hope I get great info and support here.

I like to work out, but i'm no longer consistent due to my new job, and it's not helping me lose my stomach which is my problem area. I know this way of eating (forever) is the way to achieve the healthy body I want. I have a lot more to learn about this way of eating though, and need to learn how healthy it is during pregnancy, since we're trying for a baby soon.

My ultimate goal is to see my abs and stop craving sugary treats all the time.

I "officially" begin the induction phase of Atkins on Monday. I will stay on that track for 3 weeks and then slowly begin adding in the carbs. I'd like to maintain at a weight where I feel strong and defined.

Even though my start date is Monday, I've been beginning to look at the carb content I'm eating. I feel like maintaining a life without sugar/bread/pasta/rice will not be as hard as I expected it to be.

I've ordered a load of low carb food for work (I eat breakfast lunch and 1 snack at work) and my husband and I will be getting some Atkins Friendly food for dinners this weekend.

He lost 50something lbs on Atkins then has been seesawing between a 10lb range. He's going to re-do induction with me so I'm not alone in this endeavor.

This journal will chronicle my progress and my meals + workouts.

OK I've written quite enough.

Thanks for reading!!

This was my usual day of eating:

7am - tea w/ milk n sugar
9am (at work) - medium dunkin donuts coffee w/ milk n sugar
9:30 - an amy's breakfast tofu scramble or breakfast burrito or cereal
10am - chobani greek yogurt w/ peach (or pineapple)
12:30 - apple slices
1:30 - a frozen fresh direct meal (usually pasta w/ meat or rice w/ meat and veggies)
3:30ish - apples with kitkats or cereal

then at home
7ish - tea w/ milk n sugar or coffee w/ milk n sugar
8:ish - some random dinner (or no dinner) *or dinner out...often
9ish - an icecream bar

I probably drink about 3 bottles of coconut water each day, and maybe 1 vitamin water.

Not good. I know. The tea w/ milk n sugar is a comfort thing and is really the main part of my new way of eating that is making me anxious. I'm comforting myself by thinking that after induction I can have one cup a day w/ splenda instead.

OK last night I went to the inlaws and had a very carby meal. Because we ended up staying so late we didn't get to go to the supermarket to pick up the items I wanted at home for the week:

- spinach
- brocoli
- ground beef
- cabbage
- splenda
- tuna
- taco seasoning
- lettuce
- eggs
- heavy cream
- cheeses

So I'll try to get them by tomorrow evening. Here at work my food just arrived.

So far today I have had:

water
chamomile tea w/ splenda (1carb)
7 strips of bacon (0carbs)
a huge tablespoon of guacamole (1/2 a pint is 5 carbs so....maybe 1 carb there?)
pollyo string cheese (1g)

2 grilled mushrooms
1 g worth of guacamole
0 g worth of chicken salad
sugar free jellow
another pollyo string cheese
1 g worth of sauteed spinach
1 teaspoon of peanut butter (2gs)

11 so far - and not home yet for dinner.

I have been craving sweet stuff like CRAZY today.

In general whenever I eat a meal I want something sweet directly after. The jello was not sufficient, but the peanut butter helped.

I'm really looking forward to ketosis. Seems that's when cravings will end.

I got home from class and the grocery at 11:15.
I was STARVING
I ate 2 slices of turkey (1)
2 tablespoons of hummus (1)
1/2 a leftover chicken breast (1)
w/ mushrooms (1)

So total for yesterday was 15g of carbs!!

That's a good first day of induction!!!

I went to the grocer and picked up taco seasoning, cheeses and eggs, and splenda.

I tried stevia, but it's so bitter.

Didn't work out yesterday sadly, but I did walk 15 mins from the grocery to my apartment.

------------------
11am - tea w/o splenda! 0g
1pm(ish)Cobb Salad from Fresh DIrect. it stated that it was 8gs of carbs but I picked out all of the little tomatos and most of carrots hoping it would be 7gs lol (8g)
3pm - 2 celery sticks (1g) with 1 tbsp peanut butter (2.5g)

I was craving sweets like you wouldn't believe. I'm going to try to hold out until 5pm and then eat something NOT sweet before the gym at 6:30.

I feel like I'm doing ok, my sugar cravings are ridiculous and I can't wait for that part to be over!

Thinking ahead, I have vacation coming up during memorial week and I will have just finished my 3rd week of induction. I am going to try to stay under 100gs while on honeymoon. And when I return, another week of induction before attempting to move up my carb amount from 20 to 30.

Hi Cardiobunny,
Good luck with your induction. You are doing great! Day 3 is the worst (for me) then it does get so much easier. You won't be as hungry! Good job being prepared too! I do so much better when I am prepared. If you have any questions, there is so much help here!

Osstrich thanks so much!! Day 3 has started quite rough. Worst day yet so far. Thank you for stopping in. You're right there's TONS of info here. I haven't yet had to had many questions because hunting around I'm getting all my questions answered from old threads.

I didn't have dinner last night so I just ended the day at 18 carbs.

This morning I woke up feeling like death warmed over. I felt weaker than I ever have (i thought I had the flu!) I took my temperature to be sure I wasn't that sick.
It took everything I had to get out of bed. And honestly, if I didn't just start a new job a month ago, and if my bosses weren't all traveling this week, I likely would've called in sick. I felt wretched.

I got up and made myself 3 scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese (1.5g) and it took me forever to do this. And then forever to eat it. And forever to shower. And forever to get dressed.

I didn't know what was wrong with me. I thought I was doing something wrong with induction. My mouth is super dry and I got my first bit of that metallic taste in my mouth people were mentioning on these forums.

Hopefully I can get through this day easily and get home to bed. I"m going to try the broth idea people mention too in case this really is sodium depletion.

I also don't want to eat any of the foods I have on hand that are induction friendly. I'm craving croissants and cereal and other breaddy breakfast items today. Go figure.

So Far Today:

3 cheesey eggs scrambled (1.5g)
1 teaspoon natural peanut butter (1g)

1/2 cup palak paneer (4g)

17.5gs so far. Dinner will be tacos in lettuce "tortillas" w/ cilantro and avocado. I will try my best not to go over 20gs today.

Well..I went over 20gs last night. I think I had 30.3g yesterday total.

I had 2 tacos w/ cheese, avocado, hot sauce, sour cream, cilantro wrapped in lettuce. That we calculated to be 7
And I made these cream cheese "Muffins" (cream cheese, splenda, vanilla, egg) and calculated those to be 3.3g each

I was super full and it felt great....but....I know it was a bad move for induction.

I'm back on track today and will NOT let that happen again.
---------------------------------------------

So far today:

coffee w/ heavy cream and splenda (2)
cream cheese muffin (3.3)

-----------------------------------------------

I woke up feeling so wonderful today. I guess it's because I went so far over my carbs and there's no ketosis action going on, and I didn't work out to burn any carbs off either. I wonder if I will wake up feeling like crap if I stay strict at 20 today.

I wonder how much of a disservice it does to go 10g over in one day

I hope I didn't screw myself over.

coffee w/ heavy cream and splenda (2)
cream cheese muffin (3.3)
1 avocado ( I see 2, and 3.5 as carb amounts in 1 california avocado... i dunno which is right
pollyo string cheese (<1g)

Coffee with half n half and 1 splenda (2) i only drank half of it, but still.
Salad: Mixed Greens w/ grilled chicken (6) total guess

17 so far.

When I get home I'm having broth with tofu in it. That brings me up to 20 and I am done!

Oh, no sugar cravings today either!! First time in the past few days of induction!
This is by far the best day yet. Day 4.
Tho I still wonder when Ketosis will kick in. I'll patiently wait.

I've decided to go for a run today. First one since Sunday before I started induction. I'm hoping to burn off these bloody carbs so my body can start using fat instead and I can see some losing start to happen!!

Also took a multivitamin and a fish oil tablet.

I ate out of boredom.
Grilled Chicken (2)
Spinach (2)

My total for the day is 21.

Better than yesterday, but still one carb over the limit.

I won't beat myself up about it, I'll just do better tomorrow.

I don't know how to edit my posts. I ate a lil under half my plate of chicken and spinach. My total for the day is 19!!

And even though I'm SERIOUSLY craving one of the little cream cheese muffin things I made, I'm not going to have one.

Hi Cardiobunny,
You've been doing really good with your journal. If you get hungry, eat some protein. It will help curve that hunger. I will also have an atkins shake to curb hunger.

Good luck this weekend. Weekends are the hardest for me. I would suggest plan, plan, plan and stay strong. Keep your goal in mind when you want to have anything carby!

Thanks Osstrich. It's my husband's birthday dinner this weekend and his mother makes uber carby food. We know she's making lamb, and hubby asked her to make a green veggie too. So I'll have that at least, and then for dessert I'll just have coffee w/ splenda whle everyone eats the cake/cookies.

For my meals the rest of the weekend, I'm a bit nervous, but I have eggs, and tonight I may hit the supermarket up with a list of items to get me by. I may whip up another batch of broth/tofu soup and the cream cheese "muffins" as well.

I can do this (i have to keep reminding myself)

I woke up and weighed myself today. I'm back to my pre TOM weight. I probably shouldn't have started induction on the first day of TOM because my weight was slightly up even more from that water weight.

Either way, I'm at my "usual" weight and can't wait to see what losses come from my new WOE!!!

I had tea w/ evap milk this morning and a cream cheese "muffin" (5)

2 pollyo string cheese snacks (1)

13 so far!

Going to gym for a hearty workout, and then going to head home for dinner.
(probably cheesy eggs, but not sure)

This was a good day. I did crave sugar a little bit, but for the most part I held steady.

This weekend ruined me. I have to learn to say no to my mother in law.
she didn't make greens like she said she would, and i felt pressured into eating potatos and corn and dessert.

I feel like i'm starting from scratch.

Hubby and I didn't get to the grocery store this weekend, so I feel unprepared. I'll get it together.
