Seagulls! you're killing me!

Look on the bright side: at least you don't have retention deficit disorder.

Brawny™ has nothin' on me. Swimming pool overflowing? Water main burst in your front yard? No problem! Send me -- Osmosis Woman® -- right on over.

♫Hey little cistern what have you done...♫

OK, I guess that one is a bit of a stretch on the definition of water retention.

Just remember, I'm mocking with you - not at you. Or something like that.

You are seriously brilliant - you missed your true calling as a humorist. Then again, I've never seen you code, for all I know that's even MORE hilarious.

^^ Ty, Z. I always wanted to be a writer/humorist when I was a kid, but I remember telling myself I would wait until I was older and had something to write about. Well, here we are, several decades later...my life is now too boring to write about.

So.....it's cold in my house. Again.

[Random LCF member: "How cold?"]

Why, here is a visual aid, just for you:

This lousy house is over 90 years old. No insulation. Drafty windows thanks to dry rot (DH puts plastic over them, but it really does no more than shield us from viewing the neighbors). None of the outside doors seal tightly, thanks to all the settling of the house.

This morning's outside temperature was something like 9 degrees with wind chill.

House temp was 55.

To stay warm last night, I wore 2 sets of gloves, heavy socks under fuzzy slipper boots, long johns, flannel pj pants, heavy pullover, a hoodie, and a BBT Warm Kitty slugglee/blanket-with-arms doodad....and three blankets. My toes were spared the indignity of frostbite, but my nose has still not recovered from the 7 hours of exposure. I keep touching it to make sure it's still there. Awoke with the beginnings of what may be a new chest cold.

It's also so cold that the squirrel gang have long since abandoned us for a warmer house.

I really can't begin to tell you how hurt I am by that.

The one room that desperately needs heat -- the bathroom -- has none whatsoever. Never has. I'm deathly afraid to sit on the throne without first prepping it with a strategically-placed ring of tissue squares. Hey, I remember the tongue-and-flagpole scene from A Christmas Story, and I can only imagine what would happen if my generous posterior were to adhere to that frozen seat. The housecall by EMTs would make front page news here.

I even tried to boost the warmth yesterday by turning on the oven for a few hours, something that usually makes the house uncomfortably warm. Well, that was a waste of electricity -- never made a dent in the chill, and only served to remind me how lazy I've been about cleaning the inside of my oven. I stuck my head and hands halfway inside in an attempt to regain some feeling and color, all the while cursing my life in this brutal place.

DH doesn't seem affected by this in the slightest, which just irks me all the more. Pretty sure he's just hearing staccato clicking noises when I complain.

I'm > this < close to just packing up the whole house and moving in the middle of the night to get him to understand that Raynie ain't happy freezing to death in Siberiana.

My ancestors may have been hardy German farming folk living in Illinois and South Dakota, but this descendent seems to be missing their survival genes. I'm a delicate flower, doggone it.

fin.

Thanks, LCG! We sure could use it! According to the weather channel, this area will continue to be colder than a witch's mammarian (is this a word? I'm using it anyway lol) appendage through February, then unusually warm in March/April. Almost made it sound like we'll be going straight from long johns and survival gear to air conditioning and tanning lotion in the space of a week.

Haven't been weighing. Haven't heard anything since my last interview.

Did hear from new accountant dude. Knew right off the bat that something was not right...

They can't process my payroll, he says, because Quickbooks has issues with Indiana and Wyoming. And then he asks if he can pay me -- by check! -- like a 1099 contract employee.

I told him no, you cannot. I am not a 1099 employee.

FYI - the sleazeball who paid me to train people in India in 2009 also tried the 1099 trick on me...and failed. Failed because I threatened to report him to the IRS.

Anyway, this guy goes on to say, ok, maybe we can estimate your taxes and just pay you the rest. Fine, I say...will the check arrive on the 31st?

He's not sure, since it would be coming from....

....wait for it.....

INDIA.

Uh huh. My Spidey Sense was not malfunctioning when I heard about this merger after all.

I could really use a drink. Or something to hit.

Oh brother!

I always feel frustrated because logic and efficiency seem to have to place in today's world. My friends tease me because I actually do have "logic" in my vocabulary, and despite many life lessons, I still expect it. I know....I'm a dinosaur....

I know exactly what you mean.

I'm also shocked on a continual basis by supposedly professional people who lack common sense, or knowledge of their own field/scope of 'expertise'...and I wind up being the one to correct them.

And then there are the ones who think they're pulling a fast one on me and seem genuinely surprised when I call them on it.

Silly wabbits.

ETA: Since I want my pay when it is due, I'll be letting them cut me this 'estimate' check. Does anyone out there know what, if any, recourse I might have should they fail to file and pay the appropriate taxes with the amount withheld?

Some days there are just not enough TUMS to go around.

Sorry, I can't help you with that. I don't even know how you would know if they did or not. All employees have to take it on faith that their employers are following the tax laws. I guess your W2 next year will tell the tale, but that's a year off!

Been in limbo, consistently messing up my DDs. Stress is a likely culprit -- on pins and needles wondering if I'm still in the running for the one job I was even slightly interested in, payroll stress (which is 80% rectified at this point), gathering cash for the debt settlement, and now...the bloody landlord.

Slumlord -- who we have neither seen nor heard from since Nov 11th -- dropped by unannounced the other day (in violation of Landlord-Tenant statutes) to pick up the traps he'd left here back in NOVEMBER. I didn't know which key it was, plus I'd just woken up (after getting to bed at 7am), so it was a confusing mess. At any rate, slumlord was either drunk or stoned to the extent he was incoherent. He gives me the creeps like you wouldn't believe.

Anyway, the badly done wiring in the house is on the fritz, tripping the main breaker whenever we combine an as-yet-undefined mix of appliances. Saturday was fun -- lights went out three separate times with no clear cause. On Sunday they went out twice, the last time when I'd turned off all the lights and devices in my office and went into the kitchen to make a mug of tea. I turned off the burner and just before my finger touched the timer keypad -- out go the lights again.

DH made another call to slumlord in his usual kind manner and left a voicemail.

Slumlord called him back and asked for his email.

He emailed both of us, essentially insulting us both for not rewiring the house on our own dime, not eradicating the squirrels on our own dime (found out the other night that they're still in the wall, just quieter now), whining that we should put on our "big boy pants" to do all the work ourselves...or at least pay $300 a month more (like he's doing) while sucking up to him (like he's doing with his own landlord). Mind you, he hasn't done anything to this house improvement-wise beyond putting screens in the attic vents. That's IT. His email made it sound like we're working him to death.

The best part? We appear to be the only tenants on his watch that actually pay rent on time every month.

No good deed goes unpunished, apparently.

So........I'm now adding find new home immediately to my list of stressors.

Joy. Rapture. Facepalm.

That's rough. Hopefully you'll find a place with heat. And a better slumlord.

Seriously, though - I hope everything works out for you in the not to distant future.

Thanks, Z!

And now, on to the UPDATE:

Weight: 232.2 (it's a DD in a cold house - oh boy)

Housing: DH looked at one of two fairly decent places we found, this one has much smaller bedrooms but has CENTRAL HEAT, a usable kitchen, and is in the final stages of renovation (laundry room saved for last). We'll all take a look on Friday at house #2...and hope it has central air for summer, being that the modern side-sliding windows are not amenable to window a/c units.

Job: I GOT IT. Pending background check and drug test (which I'll pass), of course. The Good: Mo' money, honey. The Not-So-Good: They don't use the Cadillac of encoders, 3M...they use two different ones, one of which I've used before and despised.

Now I don't know if I should give my notice now...or wait until it's officially official.

I have a tummy full of butterflies.

Did I ever mention that I almost quit for the same company 2 years ago? Déjà vu all over again lol.

Hey - it's the not too distant future already!

Stress: Off the charts. Gave in to macadamia nuts around 5 am and again an hour ago.

I am now freaking out that if I really do take this job, I will be miserable. I haven't yet given my current boss notice. Spoke to a coworker about my situation (that the new job doesn't have the same encoding software), and she told me she wouldn't take it either.

When I find myself having to decide between two lousy choices (proven steady work with software I know front and back but for shady company vs. possibly steady work with subpar software but for more money), I invariably wind up in a mental sit-n-spin. Historically, this situation results in me making the worst decision, usually out of a sense of guilt or obligation.

I feel like a deer in the headlights.

Stay longer and keep looking?

Jump ship and possibly regret it?

It's not that I can't learn new software -- I did this constantly as a traveling consultant -- it's that the same level of productivity and accuracy will be expected of me with software that a) I don't know at an expert level and b) lacks the top-of-the-line logic tree found in my present position.

DH says I should pass. DD says I should pass. Coworker wouldn't accept the position.

Worry, doubt, stress...so bad I'm shaking a little, dropping things, and feel truly sick to my stomach.

Yikes.

You know the saying "every time one door closes, another one opens"?

Got a call out of the blue from one of the facilities I'd submitted a resumé to and had not heard from. A really great place to work, according to employee reviews, too. Told them my situation, including the hesitancy regarding the contingent offer, and she surprised me by saying "I'll tell them to expedite this one."

So, Friday (my day off) I'll take their test and keep my fingers crossed.

They have THE encoding software I actually know (yes!), and cases that will not put me to sleep. Typically very complex stuff, which is right up my alley.

Nerves. I got 'em.

Good news Rayne! I hope this comes through for you and makes it an obvious decision. If not, and you're still facing that decision, try to sit down, breathe deep, relax your mind, and listen to what your gut is telling you. If you can calm the whirlwind (easier said than done, I know) you can find what you really know is best FOR YOU. Good luck!

Thanks, LCG!

The Bad: Too cold to weigh (it's 51 deg in the house -- brrrrr)
The Good: I did not go over on my UD yesterday
The Bad: Too cold my office yesterday to do the coding test. Should be a little warmer tomorrow, so I'll do it then.

The BEST: We found a house!!

It's an approximately 100 year old modified foursquare (20 yrs older than the Victorian we're in now) but in extremely good shape. I'm over the moon that it's also in a different county altogether. [The other house we looked at, in our town, was the typical thing we've found here: stench, horrible 'upgrades', obvious need for more repairs, tacky paint jobs, and bonus points for the "WWE" painted IN BLACK on one of the bedroom walls. Pass!! We all mouthed "heck no" to each other during the walk-through.]

Landlord/reno company of our new house is finishing the painting, laundry room, and upstairs bathroom, have already reroofed it, installed new gutters, new ductwork, new plumbing, new furnace, huge new breaker box (twice the capacity as the one we have), complete renovation of the kitchen, new insulation, and replaced several windows (which also have storm windows).

We went to look at it, knowing at least a dozen other people have been interested. It truly is a rare gem amongst cubic zirconia, and nothing I've seen in my 6 years here has come anywhere near it. All through the tour, DH, DD and I gave each other hand signs while mouthing "I love it" and "Yes!!" to each other.

So, the house is practically 4 stories -- cement floor basement we can use for storage and possibly my gym; main floor with original parquet floors, living room, dining room, kitchen, laundry, and half bath; carpeted upper floor with full bath and 3 bedrooms (one will be my office); and attic we can also use for storage). It also has a full-width front porch with railing, something I've been coveting ever since I moved here. Almost forgot -- this place is filled with built-in closets...and has a built-in hutch in the dining room. Almost peed myself.

Downsides: no parking (must be on-street, landlord is working to see if we can get a reserved spot for about $40/mo), no backyard, front yard is super tiny -- and with no garage or shed, we have no place to safely keep our lawn mower. DH uses a lawn service for his store and will be asking how much he'd charge to mow our lawn a few times a month (I'm also seriously thinking about hiring a maid/cleaning service once or twice a month -- I have no time to clean!). We'll probably sell the mower.

When we were done with the tour, we settled in the kitchen, and the landlord asked if we had any questions. I piped up, "Well, what would it take to get to the top of your list?" He replied, "You're already at the top." Score! Easiest application EVER. We'll start moving before the end of the month!

I'M SO EXCITED I COULD BUST.

PS - Slumlord was given notice via email yesterday. He's doing his best to sound nonplussed, but it's not working too well. His panic is showing, as he reiterated the fact that we're the ONLY tenants who pay rent on time -- "I won't beg you, but...[whine about his lack of money, complaining about the other tenants]"

***

Goal for today: Finish up my work after taking yesterday off. Stay warm. Prep for tomorrow's coding test. Try to have a half-decent DD (or maintenance level if I really have to -- finding out that the cold is making this almost a necessity).

Too dang cold in my house to weigh, but I finally managed a good DD two days ago and a very controlled UD yesterday. DD again today, so far so good.

We move in 3 weeks. Just knowing that this house misery will end soon has seemed to make all the difference in my JUDDD focus.

No longer in the doldrums.

Rayne, that is great news about the new house. Being cold all the time sucks. Maybe the old slumlord will get his act together before he rents the old house and do some winterizing. You'll certainly get some good exercise with packing for the move. Keep up the focus and by the time you move and can weigh without freezing the scale will be looking pretty good.

Thanks, Frankie

I did manage a weigh-in this morning after a fairly good DD yesterday (about 650 cals): 233.4. Feet are very bloated, so I'm guessing I have a lot of water retention going on.

It's been a salt fest lately!

Quick weigh-in: 230.4

Same weight from almost exactly a month ago, but since I'm mostly focused on maintaining this month, I'm truly pleased. This is my lowest weight so far this year.

Hi LCG! Yes, things are going ok -- and 'crazy busy' definitely sums it up, too lol. I took yesterday off in order to help pack, and I still wish I could've taken a day or two more off. There's still so much to do!

We changed our move-in date to Saturday so we could get a head-start on everything. We'll use the weekend for some of the smaller items (including a Saturday raid on IKEA), then officially move on Monday with the U-Haul.

The Bad: Cable company messed up the date for installation...we won't get phone/cable/internet (read: my work) until Wednesday. Boss not too happy about that.

The Good: All the other utilities are set to go on schedule.

The Bad: Haven't managed a good DD since last week.

The Good: I've been pretty good at keeping my intake in general under control.

No weigh-ins til we've moved and unpacked, and JUDDD begins again in earnest on Tuesday next week.
