Hmm, one thing I am noticing is my "pudgyness" is changing. Starting to get harder to make a fat roll out of my two abdominal fat rolls (to bring the "crease" between them out). Yes I do this frequently, even at work, for the sheer hell of it. I am a gross boy, deal with it! LOL

cheated on some gluten-free baked goods last night, but not too much. I think I lost a lot of weight even before then...

Oh, wow, just realized that waist tape measure I have I was using wrong before. The 45.375 inch measurement last Tuesday was totally inaccurate.

In either case, my waist measurement for today is 42.75"
Using the incorrect method my measurement for today would be 45" which means I've lost 3/8" of waist since Tuesday. Nice!!! I could totally notice, as I commented yesterday, that my "pudgyness" was changing.

This "myotape" thing is a lot nicer than I thought, you pull out the tape and latch the end into some slot and press the button to let it come snug against the waist... then read the other side of the tape. The end of the tape starts just before the 2" mark (to account for the width of the tape reel gismo) so that's why it was so inaccurate before.

Xylitol tastes pretty damned good. Like regular sugar, just with a slightly different aftertaste. Tried a cool concoction--decaf coffee brewed in the Moka pot with some cocoa on top, so the resulting espresso concentrate has cocoa in it, poured a small mug with 1 tsp of xylitol and some heavy cream. Tasty drink!

eww, yuck, darned xylitol does the same thing as the others... WHOOSH. Odd experience I kinda recall from back when I ate carb-smart ice cream was that after the "whoosh" I had super raging ketone breath for a while... wonder why/how that happens (guess a lack of nutrients passing through the intestines due to the resulting void causes immediate lipolysis?)

Humm, this is a disgusting thought but an idea came to me tonight. After the nasty "woosh" from the xylitol I noticed ketosis coming on full-bore in a way I haven't seen since attempting clean LC this month (post-holidays, which were mostly all GF carbs), and I kinda wondered... Maybe my intestinal flora had something to do with it? Perhaps gluten-free LC foods modify the intestinal flora in such a way to make it difficult to LC (perhaps it's efficiently converting all fiber into carbs or excreting some kind of hormone)?

To that end, perhaps a "strategic woosh" a day or 2 after a major carb-cheat would be a good idea to "reset" the intestinal flora and make things easier?
Grotesque idea, but it might explain why some find it difficult to LC after dropping off the wheel...

Had a bunch of carb cheats this weekend, not surprised that I feel dehydrated and weight more. Haven't gained any waistline though. This week will be a clean one.

Just read every page of your thread lol very inspiring after waking up to an unexplained 2lb gain! Grrr! I have some questions for you though... what exactly do you mean by "whoosh"? Sorry, I'm new haha Also I'm very curious about your butter theory...

Thanks!

Whoosh (for me, anyway, I think others may have different definitions but I'm pretty sure they're talking about the same thing) is, um, diarrhea

I'm not too sure about the butter theory, I tried having some butter before bed a few times recently and I don't recall any big difference but I should try it again soon. The past few weeks I've adjusted my habits, diet and supplementation and this week I'm trying to get a solid week of identical habits through to see if my latest adjustments help or not. Next week I'm probably going to try JUDDD in the form of a 500 calorie fat fast on the down-days.

Anyway the rough idea was echoed from Peter from the Hyperlipid blog, that butter may actually induce fat burning above and beyond its own caloric contribution to the body. That's the hypothesis anyway.

And welcome to my blog!

And since you're new here I just want to post these links for you (posted them in another thread recently)-

The Blog of Michael R. Eades, M.D. » Tips & tricks for starting (or restarting) low-carb Pt I
The Blog of Michael R. Eades, M.D. » Tips & tricks for starting (or restarting) low-carb Pt II

Read through those, study them, learn 'em, love 'em. Dr. Eades is a smart guy and I vote him as my idea of a living surrogate for Dr. Atkins (may he rest in peace...)

You will find 2lb swings every other day or so. It's obnoxious but it happens. Well you've seen my blog so you should know I just recently started measuring my waist, which is the preferred way to judge fat content I think. Thanks! I will definitely read those. Also curious...do you just take the butter by the spoon full? I think I might gag lol but it's worth a shot!

Since you seem to be a seasoned veteran any ideas if caffeine might be causing a stall? I love me my coffee, but I will switch to decaf if need be.

Lol yeah, by the spoonful .... The gagging went away after the 3rd time but it's still a little weird Salted butter at least tastes better, and the extra salt is a good idea for a low-carber.
I'd advise cutting the caffeine until you have a better feel for things. I am limiting myself to 1 cup of caffeinated coffee/day, the rest decaf. IIRC the problem is one of stress, caffeine can mess with your stress level and stress response I think and the stress-related hormones have tangible effects on fat storage vs. fat release.

And last but not least, I leave you with two links (one webpage, another a book suggestion)-

THE TASTE TESTS -- Easy way to test if you're deficient in some of the major electrolytes. Very important to keep those up, particularly if you're losing a lot of water. I tested positive for Magnesium deficiency with those tests, have been supplementing Mg and definitely feel better for it. Haven't tried the potassium and calcium tests yet.

Amazon.com: The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living:...Amazon.com: The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living:... -- also available on Kindle. Great book by some contemporary experts in low-carb, one deals with it from an athlete standpoint too. Answers a lot of common questions I've seen over the past year from newbies and seasoned veterans alike on this forum. It's a very thorough review of what low-carb diets are, what they do to your body and why they're good.

I could swear I have less belly fat today than I did a couple days ago. Having even more trouble squeezing and pudging it out.

It feels decadent to cut thin slices of butter and eat turkey salad with it. I cut myself off at 2tblsp butter though. Don't need to eat the whole danged stick!

Huh, wow, so these are weird results. Waist is now 1" larger over the past week? Yet pudgyness wise I feel like I've improved a bit, although it feels like I gained some fat or something over the past day or 2. Haven't done any yoga in this past week as I'm waiting for my back to heal, but I've been keeping my protein in check and loading up on the fat.

Somehow I wonder if the lack of yoga explains the expansion of the waistline--maybe it's not fat, but water retention and since I don't have any waist measurements from before doing yoga I can't know for sure. The recent increase in weight over last week is probably due to meals; had wine on saturday and a beef stew that had a little potato starch in it, and I didn't do much on sunday/didn't feel like going out at all, just laid around reading all day.

I've also added Truvia (stevia+erythritol) to my diet recently, wonder if that's affecting things...

Very happy I was able to get around to some yoga tonight. Back's still not fully healed, but it's more of a mild inflammation awareness back there than tangible pain. I laid off the belt stretches, which tend to be the most extreme stretches I do...
