Just started reading the "Blood Sugar 101" blog, a diabetes info repository. Link: http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/
Figured it's worth researching it (my mom had it, and if obesity is related to type 2 diabetes in some fashion I better get to know the ins & outs). Found an interesting study- Long-term persistence of adaptive thermogenesis in subjects who have maintained a reduced body weight Disturbing conclusion: Quote:
I kinda wonder if some of this has to do with the idea that your adipocytes get smaller when you lose weight but don't reduce in number? Tim Ferriss talked about it in his 4Hr Body book and rationalized his use of EGCG (green tea extract) because it supposedly helps kill them off. |

Oh yeah, and an anecdote to add; Eating a big NY strip steak = good, drinking Fanta Orange (aspartame/acesulfame-K sweetened) with it = Jittery, craving food, yawning while taking a walk ~45min later. I think the soda may have induced an additional insulin response, as that feels like excess insulin-induced hypoglycemia to me. One more nail in the coffin for artificial sweeteners, and a potential anecdote that the bastards really are causing weight gain or stalling.

Lol was actually 238.6 before I left, seems my body is purging water a lot. Note I had some low-sodium V8 the other day, wonder if that triggered it--very rich in potassium (something like 1100mg of it!!! vs 200 or 300mg sodium)
Also, drinking a liter or 2 of water mid-morning definitely intensified the ketone breath. I drank it fairly quickly, in one sitting so to speak. |

yup, I was bad, indulging in cheat day early.. had two 1/2c servings of ice cream. yum. Did a brisk walk with some hills afterwards, and I feel great. So much better than I did eating carbs before I started Atkins...

The low weight has to do with the fact that I refused to drink a lot of water last night, but I sure paid for it this morning. No ketosis, felt dehydrated and headachy/sinus stuffy. It's obvious that consuming a ton of carbs uses up a lot of water, as we've all heard, it's just weird feeling it in action--and more importantly--realizing that this is the reason I always got sinus infections all year round before!! I'd feel dehydrated and dry and wonder why the heck this happened all the time... guess it was from glycogen getting stored from all the high-carb foods I was eating. Wow. |

whew ok, 2nd morning in a row eating 2 donuts from Krispy Kreme for breakfast .... and now I remember why this is never a good idea, yuck. will be happy to get back to the atkins fare when I get home... which should be this morning/early afternoon. The restaurants around here are not low-carb friendly at all!!!
Sidenote though; Cheeburger, Cheeburger has got to be the most amazing cheeseburger joint I've ever seen. Good burgers, good toppings, the buns are very wide and crisp (though I'm sure the burgers are just as tasty without them), and they have an amazing selection of milkshakes or malts to eat afterwards. That'll have to be one of my "cheat day treat" destinations in the future... Last edited by spirilis; 07-05-2011 at 05:45 AM.. |

Wow, finally home and my weight is only 239.0. Pretty impressed! Back to the low-carb foods. Ate some leftover bratwurst & sauerkraut from before the hospital visit and I feel right as rain.
I replaced the water filter in our fridge today, and I can't believe how good the water tastes. The water was getting pretty nasty before (and the "filter expired" indicator light went amber) but the difference is just astounding me. |

Ok, in the midst of more google-searching about the Thyroid and related items, I found this:
:: Wilsons Temperature Syndrome :: eBook********************************************* ************************************************** ************************************************** ************************************************** *************** An ebook about a condition called "Wilson's Temperature Syndrome", which is basically a doctor's self-named description for a condition where T4-T3 conversion gets gummed up inside your cells. But anyway the point I got out of that particular page was that Stress and Starvation (not sure how starvation does it, will read further but Stress does it by way of Cortisol) cause inhibition of the 5'-deiodinase enzyme that converts T4 to T3, so that Stress effectively revs-down your metabolism. Never knew that. Very important point! The guy so far has stated that Starvation does this too by the same mechanism (inhibits 5'-deiodinase) so it's important to mention that fasting will slow your metabolism (something most people already know, but it's fun to see the scientific reason how/why). |

well fwiw, I have been reneging on a couple changes; been drinking aspartame-sweetened sodas (I'm at home, we got a ton of it... somebody's gonna drink it) and using heavy cream and cheese here and there. The aspartame/acesulfame-K soda definitely kicks me out of ketosis.

Rather astounding considering I had some carbs with lunch (2 small slices of pizza, breading on my veal parmesan) and some sugary stuff for dinner... Alas, today's going to be a wholesale cheat-day. Although despite the carbs yesterday (which were few and far between), I am mildly ketotic already! Last edited by spirilis; 07-16-2011 at 04:50 AM.. |

I still find it amusing (even though I fully understand how/why it happens) how after eating a ton of carbs, I feel dehydrated like the desert, then during the following day as I low-carb I feel no thirst (and an excess of saliva). Like clockwork.
