Whose life is it? Oh yeah, mine.
Quick intro:
I'm 39 1/2 years old. I've been struggling with weight since I was about 11years old when mom put me in weight watchers. I was 5'4" and 195lbs. I'm the only one in the family who's overweight aside from my mom. She dieted throughout my whole life. It was always a version of low cal/low fat. I am now 6' tall and 249lbs (todays scale) I was a ballet dancer in my youth and in my teen years succumbed to eating disorders. I'm very careful now that my eating doesn't become disordered or obsessive. Which is different than careful. I've spent much of my life trying to get beyond the beauty myth, live fat positive, see the beauty in me, and in others regardless of size (or other difference) and for the most part it's worked. However, I come from a family where looks are valued (although everyone would deny this in a heartbeat)and it is very difficult to ignore modern cultural beauty norms. My highest weight was 315. Upon leaving my wife I immediately lost 40 of them. Like... in 2 months. They just fell off. Unfortunately, I've only lost about 20lbs a year, with all the low cal/fat eating that's where it's at. it would take about 4 years to lose the rest if I kept on that way. Not good enough. My brother - one day as I was talking about how hard it was to lose weight - said "you know, calories are an artifact don't you?" I didn't. I had no idea. I still thought they were 'real'. So I started reading about the calorie fallacy, I started reading about caveman diets, about insulin & it's role.... etc until I ended up here. Finally I'm here and I've been eating vlc for 2 days (this is day #3). I am convinced that this is a healthy way to eat. I've been so excited waiting for my start date. I'm so sick of not being able to buy clothes off the rack. I'm sick of not being able to wear clothing that is my style because it simply doesn't come in the sizes for me. I'm sick of having to carry so much weight around (like 4 big bags of flour). I'm sick of having to work so hard to consider myself pretty. I'm taking back my life. I'm taking back my ability to control my weight, my health and my ability to do the things I love (hiking, dancing etc). I'm reclaiming my body - and with it so much more. |

I know I posted this somewhere else, but I want it in my journal so I have all the journey in one space.
Last night I 'cheated" and had some honey roasted peanuts and some reeses pieces. Carbs equalling 120gm. I, however, put on 5lbs. Big difference compared to my 1lb a day drop. ...and I didn't eat 5lbs of food. Back on track though and good to know that it doesn't take much to put it back on. Today will be a very low carb day. I'll be trying to get that 5lbs off again as quickly as possible and get back into ketosis. |

keeping on track. I haven't weighed for a few days, so I'm not sure. I've been insulating the attic, so I"ve been in the attic before I even think about weighing.
My new friend? Whipping cream. I don't normally have a sweet tooth at all, however, I've been wanting something sweet as of late, so a bit of whipping cream, some stevia, and vanilla, or cocoa powder, or almond flavouring is just what the doctor ordered. I'll also have it when I get to the end of the day and find that I haven't eaten enough fat (who knew that would be an issue). Anyway, it's my new treat that I'm pretty happy about. I may have to cut the dairy out eventually - it's not so great for me - I grew up allergic to milk and I know it has an effect on me - BUT while I'm starting on this woe, I'm keeping the dairy in and then will reduce it as I go. I might not be able to give up the whipping cream![]() |

no, my days of the grouse grind are over for the year, I'm afraid. I threw my back out pretty good about 2.5 weeks ago moving my partners &%&#!! TV. So, walking yes, climbing no.
Although, that being said, I'm going up to Lone butte next week and will be doing much walking on hills - just not a 3km stairclimber. Too bad though, I love the grind. The sense of accomplishment. Tell ya what, next year when it opens? I'll go up once a week with you..... dare ya! I'm not actually doing 'induction'. I'm not following Atkins. I'm doing Very Low Carb as a lifestyle. It will take a while to tweak, finding more sources of wild and grainfed/organic meat for a shoestring budget, when I go back to work, I'll have to figure out that whole thing... you know... but really, I plan to stay pretty much 20gms or less (try for 10 is where I am now) unless something changes that makes me think I should change it. see my rule when I went up was that I wasn't going to turn around. Even if it took me 2 days to get up there. Seriously. I just stopped and took a break until I felt strong again, and teh went a bit further. There were times when I was resting every 10 steps!
Besides, I've got 70lbs on you!! ![]() |

Hiya Cait,
I think I dropped off the planet yesterday...actually I was reading a lot of zero carb stuff because it looks like that's where I"m going with my woe. Very interesting read. I find meal planning really really really easy. 2tbls hwc adn 1tbls coconut oil & a serving of stevia in my 2 big cups of coffee every day breaky (around 11-12:00) - what's left over from dinner? Unless there is only enough for my s/o to take for lunch, then I have a handful of eggs, or 200gms hamburger. Or both, if I'm really hungry. Lunch... not usually hungry for lunch Dinner (around 9-10) ground pork or beef, or little beef chuck steaks and eggs snack - if I'm feeling picky then I break open a bag of bac'n puffs. They're soo soooooo salty though, I might have to ditch them, or find some that aren't salted and just salt them to taste. See? really easy. I find I don't obsess about food like I did when I was counting calories, counting grams of fat, etc. I just eat meat, fat, and a bit of dairy/eggs. Measured myself.... lost 1.5 inches around my waist. Seriously. IN 12 days. Crazy man, crazy. I'm going to have to crow about this on several threads. How about you? how is the day going for you? I use coconut milk all the time. I stopped for a while when I was doing low cal/low fat but use it whenever I do a curry or soup. I haven't used it on this woe yet, because my favourite soup is turban squash smashed with rich coconut oil and carmamom seed (whole seed, take them out at the end) but squash is carb rich, so it's off the table, along with other plant life.
I LOVE coconut. oil, milk, cream, grated.... OH, DID I MENTION THAT I LOST 1.5 INCHES?? |
