Today

Got home at 1 AM. Got up at 8:40, went the the Y. The cardio kickboxing class was too full for me to want to try it today--besides, I'd likely get kicked in there because it was so full!

Elliptical-30 min

Started lifting weights today! Lifted the equivalent of 1 1/2 elephants, but not whole elephants--elephant roasts, I guess.

Went in the steam sauna for 10 min or so. That room is really hot!

***
Exercising on Thursday and today was difficult.

Wednesday night I couldn't get to sleep until 2:00, then got up at 7:00. I was extremely tired, and I don't remember eating well.

I was still tired yesterday. Then I got to bed late last night.

Today, I hadn't eaten anything before exercising.

I'm wondering if being tired and not eating made it more difficult to exercise. After exercising, my legs hurt just walking up 1/2 flight of stairs. When I got to the top, they were burning! I had walked up the stairs before exercising, and felt fine. (Oh, I DID have a protein drink in the middle of my exercising.)

Yesterday I worked at our CSA farm for 4 hours. (Flooding, you know.) My left shoulder/pectoral muscle was hurting badly. I soaked in the hot tub, then used the heating pad before going to bed. It's better today, but not perfectly healed. I think that lifting weights for the first time on Saturday, followed by hours of work wasn't such a good idea for it.

I think that I have realized that I still might be doing Atkins '72. I'm going to keep better track of my food and look at the book some more. It would make me feel better to think that the diet that my ND recommended is also Atkins. It would relieve a lot of questions and inner conflict that I've had.

Hmm...there is ONE thing that's different, though. My ND did say to eat lower fat cuts of meats. I don't remember ever reading that in Atkins.

So you are eating low-carb veggies? Anything else? Are they, nutritionist and dr, saying anything about glycemic index?

Hi, Karen!

Yes, I'm eating low carb vegetables. Very infrequently will I eat part of a carrot, yam, potato, etc. I know that they raise blood sugar levels, and, yes, my ND said to stay away from them.

OTOH, at my last ND appt, he said that consuming a simple carb (a GOOD one like a potato, not potato chips or other processed things) after exercising would keep my metabolism raised longer. Since I want to lose weight, this could be a good thing to do. The key is to do it within a couple/few hours of exercising. Otherwise, it's just a person trying to eat a simple carb.

For vegetables, I eat mostly:
lettuce
greens
cucumbers
cruciferous vegetables
onion family
ginger
garlic
bell peppers
tomatoes--as ingredients, not usually by themselves

I love okra, but I don't eat it often.

Like I mentioned elsewhere, the diet that my ND recommended is based upon portions, not calories. So, I should look at my plate and the vegetables shouldn't be a whole lot bigger than my protein.

ND's recommendations:

Exercise
aerobic
60-80% of maximum heart rate (MHR)
40 min, 5 times weekly

Food
High-protein
moderate complex carbohydrates
low-fat

40% animal protein
50% vegetables
10% fruits/seeds/nuts

If I feel that I must have grains, they should look like their natural form. Steel cut oats are OK, sprouted bread can be OK, wild rice is OK...but he didn't recommend eating them. They are NOT on the what to eat list! In fact, he added this part at the end:
No grains, no fried, no candies, no "snack foods"

Blood sugar levels
My last fasting blood sugar level was 109. My ND wants it to be under 100, so I'm taking a couple of supplements--containing mainly cinnamon and chromium. I'll have another test in about 6-7 weeks to see how things are going.

Here's what the nutritionist said when I saw her way back when:

Calories:
1300-1400 per day
400-450 per meal
100-150 per snack

Protein:
65-70 grams per day

Physical activity:
50 min/daily medium intensity
30 min high intensity

--Every meal has protein, healthy fat (olive oil, nuts, fish) and low carb fruit or starchy vegetable.
--Eat something small every 3-4 hours
--Always bring food with you--nuts, fruit

She recommended Bengal Spice tea, and it's yummy! It's by Celestial Seasonings. It's not organic, so it doesn't fit with what I've been trying to do, nowadays, but I might still buy it because it has a sweet taste without using sweeteners.

For recipes, she recommended South Beach Diet, Cooking Light, and Vegetarian Times, so she was obviously not advocating Atkins for me.

I just have to take what I know, what I think, what she says, what I experience, what my ND says, and combine it in the best way that I can.

The part about the starchy vegetable confuses me, but I didn't ask her about it. When I go see her again, I'm going to ask how that should help me, and see how it fits with what my ND said, if it does.

I'm also confused by the two very different recommendations for the amount of exercise I should get. I'm glad that I'm getting SOME, but I'm not sure if I should aim for her recommendations or my ND's. I need to talk to them both about that.

Since she might have different recommendations/suggestions this time, I've been sticking to what my ND said, and will try to combine the two somehow once I talk with her again.

Call the doctor to talk about this

Question:
Will eating few (almost no) carbs for a week or so further mess up my thyroid?

I'm having a difficult time sticking to his recommended WOE. I keep eating things that aren't what I need because:
1. I crave them and give in.
2. I'm hungry a lot of the time.

I'm thinking that if I go on Atkins induction or just meat/eggs/fat for several days to a week, then not only will this awful amount of bloating go away, but my cravings should go away, too. Then I should be able to add the veggies without the cravings driving me nuts.

I read that hypothyroidism can mess up a person's ability to sense being full. I'm hungry quite often, and my dad even asked me why I'm hungry so often.

New challenge--one month

SNACK
10 slices pepperoni

DINNER
2 roasted mushrooms (soy sauce)
1/3 c meat loaf
1/3 c meat loaf w/ cheese, salsa, olives
14/ c swiss chard
1 c salad w/ avocados, tomatoes, cucumbers, blue cheese, sunflower seeds, ranch (made w/ yogurt), green onions
1/8 c black bean dip w/ tomatoes and green onions

13+ cups water
multi-vitamins and calcium

I made it through one day! 29 more to go!

NEW CHALLENGE
Stay on doctor's WOE and doctor's prescribed exercise (4 days/week, 40 min) for ONE MONTH. If I still don't lose any weight and/or inches--then I'll talk to the doctor.

There's no sense in whining and complaining when I'm not even really sticking to doing what I was told to do.

I did it!!

Per ******, today's calories:

1577

Woo-hoo!! WAY less than I've been consuming!!

******'s estimate of calories burned:

2822

-1577 eaten = 1245 extra burned. That's 1/3 pound. I think that their estimate of how many calories I burn is high, but it's fun to look at...for now. It might start to irritate me if things don't change for me.

I just reread that the nutritionist suggested keeping my calories between 1300-1400, not 1400-1500. Oh well. I was WAY closer to 1400 than I usually am.

Forgot to have a snack.

DINNER
1 c salad w/ avocados, tomatoes, cucumbers, blue cheese, red bell peppers, ranch (made w/ yogurt), green onions
almost 2 clusters of snow crab legs w/ butter
1 1/2 c vanilla pomegranate tea

I'm still hungry. I'm trying to decide if I should make some jalapenos stuffed w/ cream cheese and wrapped in bacon, whipped cream, or bacon rinds.

I have had more vegetables than animal protein today--way more than 10% more. This is harder than I had thought that it would be! I thought, "Hey, I've been on Atkins. I can easily eat 40% animal protein and 50% low-glycemic vegetables!" Nope.

I'm going to enter my food into ****** to see where I am calorie-wise before deciding what to eat.

Hmm...it says that I had 1450 calories. 80 fat grams. BUT GET THIS! Only 24 carbs! Wow. How accidentally Atkinsy of me.

Hmm...yesterday I had only 38 grams of carbs.

So, how in the world am I supposed to eat more carbs than this if my carbs are supposed to represent 50% of my food? I'm already eating more than that. Maybe my ND didn't want me to eat more carbs than this? I just assumed that he did, but I didn't ask him. Well, there's another question for him.

I'm really excited about having gone three days eating only what I should eat. And I'm doing OK with my total calories. Yay!

I'm hungry right now, but I don't want to eat at 8:30 at night. So, I'm not and I feel really good about being able to do that.

Post that I made elsewhere yesterday morning

I'm really excited about my One Month Challenge that I have given myself! I've made it 3 days so far, and I feel better and better about myself each day! I like seeing that I CAN keep from eating when I feel hungry. It's nice to know that I have even more will power, but it's also good to know that I can do that because my thyroid and being overweight have likely screwed up my hunger messages (according to what I've been reading).

My weight:
This was the time period in which I first didn't know what to eat, then ate kind of what I wanted. Well, not really, because if I had, I'm sure that it would've gone up WAY further!
Nov 26....198
Dec 29....204.5

I did go from 204.5 to 201 by kind of doing what the doctor had recommended, but it felt like a slow, uncertain loss--never knowing if it would actually go down or not--and I didn't feel good about eating cookies here, biscuits there. I did lose one pound/week, though. Not great, but better than nothing!

Start of One Month Challenge--Yes, it's now a title, so it needs to be capitalized.
Jan 23....201
Jan 26....199

Some of my puffiness is going away, and that is great to see.

Oh, and I've been keeping track of everything that I eat for the past 3 days. So far:
I've eaten 2 mushrooms that I didn't make, the rest is homemade.
My homemade yogurt ranch dressing is seasoned w/ Uncle Dan's, though.
Excluding those, some garlic powder, and curry powder, and possibly the shrimp and crab (which I'm pretty sure is from the ocean, not a farm), everything that I've eaten is organic! That makes me feel good, too.

I read this elsewhere on the boards, regarding eating what isn't good for us:
Do you LOVE it enough to wear it?

After eating almost 100% organic, homemade from scratch foods:

I went to dinner at an Indian restaurant last night, and had restaurant leftovers for breakfast.
I ate Oscar Mayer hot dogs for lunch.

The weird thing? One of my kids and I noticed that the hot dogs tasted...chemically or not natural. It's amazing to me that a person can get so used to natural tastes or artificial tastes. Cool Whip used to be one of my favorite foods (Hmm...should I use the word "food" to describe Cool Whip? I feel like a traitor by criticizing a long-beloved food.) but now I can't stand it because it tastes like fluffed chemicals to me! The same child who noticed the hot dog flavor can taste when I've used Pam, and complained that the milk in the carton (flooding prevented delivery of our glass bottled milk products a couple of weeks ago) tasted like cardboard!

I'm making corned beef for dinner--from a pastured, grass-fed cow--so back to eating healthy food.

Shopping with a friend

FRIDAY

I went to Portland to spend the day with a dear friend. We went to a great shopping center, looked in fun shops, ate at The Cheesecake Factory (I had Thai coconut curry chicken and shrimp, with broccoli instead of rice.).

Here's what I bought:

Victoria's Secret
I LOVE the So Sexy scent!

Shampoo and conditioner:

Shiny hair serum:

Hairspray:

wonderfully-scented dryer sheets!!

Teavana
Pina Colada Herbal Tea

ChocoNut Green Tea

and a mix of two other teas.

Then we went to World Market where I got some adorable glass jars to hold my loose leaf tea.

Had fried squid and sushi for dinner, followed by a coconut milk tea w/ tapioca pearls (bubble tea). THAT combo made me sleepy!

Bubble tea:

Then we picked up my friend's sister and went to a Christian youth conference. Yes, we're youth.

Milk--the big question

I have often heard/read that people who have cow's milk intolerances can often drink milk, with no ill effects, if they switch to raw milk. (Maybe I've read that about organic, too, but I'm not positive.)

We buy an almost organic, small batch low-temperature pasteurized, not homogenized milk in glass bottles (and HWC and half-and-half). We also buy organic cheese, which is made from milk that has not been homogenized (don't need that process for cheese-making).

I have felt fine!

UNTIL this weekend, when I ate away from home:
Friday
butter
cream cheese
milk tea

Saturday
milk
butter

Saturday, yesterday, my left eye started to get red, like it used to get when I'd eat milk products. This morning, my throat feels the way that it used to feel from dairy. Intersting, no?

I find it very interesting. I don't know if it's the bit about it not being homogenized that has resulted in the milk not affecting me, or if it's the organic part of the equation.

I will continue my experiment...

ETA--I think that it's the homogenization that caused the problems for me, because the common denominators between the milk that I buy and raw milk would be:

lack of chemicals, antibiotics and hormones (probably)
not being homogenized

Maybe people just haven't yet figured out the part of the equation that makes it OK for those with intolerances, and are just thinking that it's the "raw" part without proving it.

I'm guessing that it's the homogenization rather than the organic part because homogenization makes it possible for the milk fat to enter the blood stream. When foreign bodies enter the blood stream, the body starts producing antibodies toward them to eliminate them. Then, when a person consumes that item, their body treats it as an enemy. Well, if the milk fat was small enough (through homogenization) to enter the bloodstream, why wouldn't that be why my body was fighting it? Just an idea.

Order is different. I have what I ate after the morning's weight.
Looking to see how eating out affects my weight.

DATE....WEIGHT....FOOD THAT DAY
Jan 27....197.5......Evening ate at Indian restaurant
Jan 28....198.5......Breakfast, Indian leftovers
Jan 29....198
Jan 30....197.5......Lunch Cheesecake Fact., Dinner sushi, bubble tea
Jan 31....?............Lunch Thai restaurant (Beef w/ green beans) not much water
Feb 1.....199.........Lunch and dinner sushi, chocolate chip cookie, not much water
Feb 2.....198.5

Yes, it looks like not getting enough water and eating out makes me retain water. I am puffy today.

I had intended to eat whatever my friend wanted on Friday. Yesterday, however, was NOT a planned cheat day. I had to go to a mall...HAD to go ...to which I don't usually go, and they had the same yummy, inexpensive sushi chain where I had eaten Friday. THEN since I'd already had sushi, I had a gooey cookie. Surprisingly, since most sugary things don't taste as good as I remember them, it was good.

What am I DOING?!

Remember the one month challenge about which I was so excited? Well, two days in a row (Three, actually, but the first one was "allowed" by myself.) I've eaten off-plan. Yesterday, I had IKEA meatballs--with wheat in them--with lingonberry sauce. I also had a little (1 tsp?) sugar in my chai.

Hmm...now that I think about it, that wasn't a ridiculous amount of eating off my WOE. OK...I don't feel like I was that off plan.

TODAY'S WEIGHT
198

I am retaining a lot of water. Even though I drank various teas all day yesterday, I don't think that I had much other water.

Tuesday
Got new wires--hurt--and rubber bands for the first time. My mouth is sore.
I also developed a cold, and have been fighting my stomach feeling upset now and then. (The kids have been sick at different times for a couple of weeks.)

Didn't eat much. Couldn't!

BREAKFAST
2 custards--one maple, one coconut

LUNCH
1 fried smelt--hurt too much to eat more
2 custards--one coconut, one plain (I like the plain and maple the best.)
Pomegranate green tea

DINNER
cheesy cream of broccoli and celery soup
Pina Colada tea w/ coconut milk

WEDNESDAY
WEIGHT
197 I'm really puffy. Maybe my fever caused me to sweat a lot last night.

Today's food

BREAKFAST
2 custards
1 c choco nut green tea (from Teavana)

LUNCH
1/2 c cheesy cream of broccoli and celery soup
1 1/2 c Pomegranate Green Tea

Only enough water to take my medicine--I need to make myself drink some more. I have a miserable cold w/ fever, no appetite, stomach was queasy off and on yesterday, my ears have been bothering me since the 29th. Physically, I feel like sleeping, but mentally, I don't want want to sleep.
