Adventures in Carb Cycling
I'm trying something new and I'm hoping writing things down here will help. I started a thread on the main lobby, I'm going to paste some of the entries over here to get started.....
Tuesday 3/25 I'm trying a bit of cycling (carb cycling, not bi-cycling) This morning I reached a point where I have been many times before. I have been doing everything I should and have been bouncing around the same weight. In the past I would either use it as an excuse to eat junk ("I'm not losing anyway, dang it!") or cut carbs and/or calories even lower. In the end, neither worked out well for me. Today I ate some extra veggies, blackberries and cream, had a Lara Jocolate bar (they are surprisingly good for being mostly made of dates- I don't even like dates), and for dinner I made a family favorite dinner with brown rice, black beans and corn. I didn't dive headfirst into a bowl of M&Ms and I didn't ration the celery in my tuna. I think I behaved sensibly, I hope it works out for me. Wednesday 3/26 Here's how its going so far..... I was at 228.5 this morning. I had been at 227 the day before, and the day before that, and the day before that, etc (except for one day of 225.5 on which I scooted down here and changed my stats, but right back up the next day). I'm having my coffee and CO (its surprising how much I have grown to like oily coffee that tastes like suntan lotion) and am planning: B...scrambled eggs w/ smoked sausage L...tuna salad D...Cleo's cauli lasagna E...Total gym and spring cleaning I'm hoping to get below that darned 227 number in the next couple of days. Is that really success? Would I have gone below sooner if I had just stuck with the original plan? Am I just too impatient? Did anyone else's mom watch Soap in the 80s? Does anyone else laugh at my jokes besides me? Thursday 3/27 Yesterday went OK. I didn't wind up eating what I planned. B (late) was tuna with cheese, celery and almonds, I had a little egg salad in the afternoon and then went to a pizza restaurant for dinner. I had a big salad with LC veggies, but when I got to the end of the bar all of the dressings were fat free except the Thousand Island. I know its full of sugar, but the other stuff tastes like chalk and has mystery ingredients. I also had the toppings off one piece of pepperoni pizza (my family calls it 'scrapins.' As in, "Mom, there is one piece left, do you want the scrapins?") I'm at 227.5 this morning. Down a pound from yesterday, but up .5 from where I've been stuck. I spent hours last night and this morning reading up on carb cycling (Thanks Holly) and it looks like people spend more than one day on higher carb, but don't use it to pig out on junk. It's more like cycling between induction and maintenence. They also carefully track their carbs and calories, something I don't do, but maybe I'll start. It seems Curves advocates the same sort of thing and they say its to repair your metabolism. The more I read the more I realized that is kind of what I have been doing the past year. I got my notebook where I write down my weight and measurements from it's place under my socks, and realized that in June of 07 I was at 148 lbs. I had lost 15 lbs (to 133) before I started this round of 'dieting.' I can remember having several occasions whre I would wake up one day with gumption. I would really watch what I ate and lose .5-1 lb a day for awhile until I got to 5-6 lbs lost, then it would taper off and stop. I would lose the gumption, gain a pound or two and level off, until the next time I woke up feeling serious. Now I just need to figure out how to shorten up the cycles so it doesn't take a year to lose 15 lbs . I think the key is not to go hog wild on the "up" cycles. A few months ago I developed/discovered I have a wheat allergy. Not a carry-an-epi-pen allergy, really more of a stomach-cramp-and-itchy-face intolerance. So even when I am "up" I'm not eating pasta and baked goods (brownies and the like are my biggest downfall). I think that's why I maintained instead of gaining. I am just rambling to myself mostly at this point, please feel free to tune me out . I should probably move this over to a journal. It is helping to get my thoughts out on "paper."

This brings us to today, Saturday 3/29.
I had four "carb up" days and this morning I weighed in at 228. I have been 227.5-229 all four of the carb up days. Last night I went out for Mexican food and had a chicken enchilada and some beans and rice. I also had some yogurt and a banana with peanut butter. I don't count and measure, but I'm sure it was my highest "up" day so far. Today I had a "carb down" day. B...two eggs fried in butter, two sausage patties and coffee w/ CO L...salad from Subway w/ meat, cheese, some veggies, oil & vinegar D...shrimp sauteed in butter and garlic We'll see what tomorrow brings. I'm hoping 4-5 carb down days will get me to 224 or so. |

Sunday 3/30
Yesterday was my first down day and this morning I was 228.5. I was hoping for a loss, but I have noticed in the past what I do today seems to affect the scale day-after-tomorrow, so we'll see what Monday morning brings. So far I have had breakfast (scrambled eggs w/ smoked sausage and cheddar), two cups of coffee w/ CO and did 40 min on the Total Gym. I'm going to mop the kitchen, plant some tomatoes and flowers and then later on go to Costco and Trader Joe's. I think I'll get a rotis. chicken for dinner tonight, steaks for tomorrow and make cauliflower lasagna Tuesday. School starts again tomorrow . I enjoy teaching, I really do, but I sure do like vacation. It is the constant go, go, go, no time for anything that I don't like, not school. I like having time to cook healthy meals, exercise & get things done around the house. I start all kinds of good habits while on vacation, but they tend to fall apart after a couple of weeks back on the work/home/kids treadmill. I know people work more hours through the year than I do, but I've had other jobs, none of them consumed my energy like teaching does. |

Monday 3/31
Hi Holly. Thanks for checking up on me .Ugh, still 228 today. I was hoping to be down a pound or two. I have been working out, maybe its muscle . I was driving yesterday and I had one hand on my upper arm while turning the wheel and I felt a muscle! It was under a layer of flab, but its there. My eating has been good today (except one gummy bear, a red one, they're the best) B...two sausage patties and two slices cheddar L...leftover chicked & asparagus, raw brocolli & a few baby carrots w/ ranch S...4 or 5 Spanish olives D...planning rib eye, roasted asparagus & mushrooms. E...I got up early and did 30 min on the Total Gym before school this morning. I found the cutest little single serving trays of raw veggies and a little cup of ranch at Costco. Perfect for work. I don't use the sticks, but I know I'm in ketosis because it tastes like a small critter died in my mouth. School was good. I always dread going back after a vacation, and its always fine. We have 48 days until summer vacation and I know it will fly by with testing and end of the year activities. It always does. Then I miss the lil' stinkers. |

Gina,
Have you thought of upping your cals by about 300 for a few days at a run, keeping carbs low to moderate for the entire time? Sometimes it's a matter of upping cals. If you're eating too far below your maintenance level (you shouldn't be eating less than 500 below), then your body won't let go of the fat. Something to think about. |

Hi Twyla, Thanks for checking in. You might be right about the calories, it gives me something to think about. My problem will be I don't count and record anything. I suppose it doesn't mean I can't though. I could figure out a few choices that are about 300 cals and minimal carbs and just add that on the up days. Hmmm. BTW, I'm waiting for Amazon to send me my Callanetics video and I just got a notice that my library branch has the Callanetics books I requested
.I weighed 227.5 this morning. Still not below the dasterdly 227, but closer. I am seriusly in ketosis. I've had the breath for some time, but while on vacation I drink so much I don't have the wee wee smell. Let's just say I'm back at work and have to be careful about my liquid intake during school hours. Enough shared .B...two sausage patties and two slices cheddar L...leftover steak, mushroom and asparagus and single serve veggie tray D...Cleo's caul lasagna is in the oven right now. E...30 min on the Total Gym We'll see what the evil little square in the bathroom shows tomorrow. As frustrating as it is, I know I'm better off regardless of what the scale says. I'm eating better and exercising. I got our spring class picture today and I have more of a waist (and that was taken three weeks ago) and look a lot better than I did in last year's picture. I fell good and my clothes are baggy. I have a noticable reduction in "back fat" . I'll just keep on keepin' on. |

Wednesday 4/2
227.0 this morning. I guess its moving, but I'm not covering any new ground. Didn't get up in time to workout this morning, I'll have to do it tonight. I'm stopping by the library after work to pick up the Callanetics books I requested and I think we'll have "fendfo" night for dinner since I have a late meeting. B...sausage patties L...leftover cauli lasagna S...little veggie tray D...more lasagna ??? E...40 min Total Gym Stay the course. |

227.5 AGAIN today. I did stay at this weight for quite awhile about 8-10 yrs ago, maybe this is a set point for me and I'll just have to gut it out.
Twyla, I am thinking about the calorie idea. I've never been to FitDay, I'll have to check it out tonight and see what I can find with low carbs and 300 cals. I also took a peek at your journal today where you talked about your refeed. IF I'm going to keep trying this, maybe that would be a better idea for me. I am tracking-challenged so a higher meal and then back to plan would be much easier. And if it doesn't do the trick, I'll know much more quickly. I have over 10 days invested in this little plan with noting to show for it so far. |

My guess is the reason you're not making any progress is because your body is not giving up the weight/fat due to insufficient calories.
I'd be willing to bet money on it. You're making this harder than it has to be. Think about it. 300-400 extra cals per day? Eat another hamburger or two. Some boiled eggs? Roast beef smothered in cheese sauce? The sky is the limit on how you could up cals and still keep carbs low. There is a difference between a carb up (or calorie up) day and a refeed day. Big difference. And if you don't like to track macronutrients, a refeed is not a good idea. But if you think carbing up once every 7-10 days to help shock your system would get things moving, I say give it a try. You'd have to triple the carbs you're eating now, and I'd stick to GOOD healthy carbs, not junk. Or....if you calorie up along those same lines, you just need to eat a whole lot more of the same kinds of food you're eating now for a day or so, then resume whatever level of calories you're eating now....and remain stalled with. ![]() Did you catch that sarcasm? ![]() Give it some thought. ![]()

Friday 4/4
Finally a day below 227. I was 226.5 this morning. I started off with breakfast as usual, and at lunch traded my giant pile of brocolli for a small pile of broc and a rather delicious avacado. According to my figures that upped my calories by about 350 and my carbs by 2. The day kind of fell apart in the afternoon. I had a stressful day at work (not the kids, they never bother me much. Its the dang adults I work with- long story) and in the afternoon I had a bunch of irritating things happen involving dentist appts (another long story). My kids were starving so we stopped at McDonalds and I seriously eyed a Filet-O-Fish, But I ate the insides out of a grilled chicken snack wrap instead. It was actually pretty good. I did however eat way too much SF ice cream and a Lara bar. Oh and some Chinese chicken salad my husband brought home. |

Friday 4/4 continued
Had to get the kids to school and me to work... Anyway, I ate several things I shouldn't have. Looking back on it, it wasn't as bad as it could have been. I did get a good night's sleep last night. I had been staying up until 11:00 or so and getting up at 5:00. I am an 8 hours a night gal. Last night I dozed off in the living room about 8:15, got up and went to bed at 9:15 and don't even remember my head hitting the pillow. TGIF so I won't be getting up quite so early tomorrow. I have noticed in the past that I don't lose if I don't sleep. Twyla, I don't not believe you about the calorie idea (that was confusing), I'm just having a hard time believing I personally am not eating enough now. I guess I don't really know that though because I have never tracked anything. I will do that this weekend. And Callantetics. The DVD finally came. In fact two of the same one came. I'm not sure if it was my mistake or Amazon's, but I am the proud owner of two Beginning Callanetics DVDs. I think I'll send one back and trade it for 10 in 10. |

Twyla, if you're out there, I think you just might be right
. I really did want to believe you, you've obviously been successful, but it was just really hard to believe I wasn't eating enough. I realized I really didn't know though, since I never counted. So this morning I started a Fitday account. I logged in my activity level, the exercise I usually do, my real eating for today and a couple of typical "mock-up" days for comparison's sake. The typical day when I think I'm being "good" calories are around 1600. On a day when I exercise I need about 2400 to maintain. That's a deficit of 800 calories. I put in a day when I stayed low on carbs but had a lot of fat and calories (went out for a big juicy rib eye) and it came up to about 2100. A deficit of 300. I remember I had a loss the next day. I feel simultaneously happy and like a doofus . Thanks for coming by and offering your help. |

Sunday 4/6
Back to 227 again today . I tracked everything in Fitday yesterday (it wasn't as hard as I thought once I got going) and came up with:Total: 2102 Fat: 162 1457 70% Carbs: 25 83 4% Protein: 134 534 26% 2100 cals is where I've had my only loss in the last two weeks, so I tried to stay there. It was surprisingly hard to eat that much LC food and I made the mistake of leaving too much too late in the day. I was really uncomfortable last night. I'm still full at 8:00 the next morning. I'm going to stick with the plan today, but frontload more calories earlier in the day. I think I'll make a cream cheese desert of some kind to help with some of the cals without adding too much protein. |

Sunday evening 4/6
Well, it went better today. I spread the calories more evenly throughout the day. I even had a juicy pear and a bit of dark chocolate after dinner. My totals came to: Total calories: 2072 Fat: 155 1395 69% Carbs: 57 200 10% Protein: 109 437 22% I was high on the carbs, but 25 came from the pear and a lot of others from vegetables so I can live with it. I took a great walk on the beach and I made a point to stay in the softer sand. I can feel it up to my hips. I also went up and down the beach stairs. All in all it was about 70 minutes. I haven't tried the Callanetics yet. I am really uncoordinated and it takes me a long time to learn a new exercise so I'm going to have to make time to watch it a time or two before I can really count it as a workout. While I was walking I realized my shoes are getting very uncomfortable and my big toes were numb. I can't remember when I bought them. They look OK but I think it has been 5 yrs at least. So I stopped by the running shoe store after the beach but they were closed. I went to Costco for for my weekly stock-up and they had some Adidas running shoes. They fit really well (had the arch in the right place, were supportive) except they were just a smidge too tight. Costco didn't have the next size so I came home and ordered them from Zappo's (I LOVE Zappo's). I hope they work out. I REALLY hope the scale has better news for me tomorrow. |

Me, too, Gina. BTW, don't fret the carbs. That's not a lot of carbs, and every now and then it's good to eat a few more carbs than your body is used to. Might want to remember to eat the biggest part of your carbs around the times you know you'll be getting some exercise. Glad to see you've upped calories. You need to do that for a while, then you can cut back into more of a deficit from time to time. It's the staying in a big deficit for too long that can attribute to stalled weight loss. Good idea about watching Callan thru a couple of times. Remember, it's like anything else we learn in life: Remember first grade, learning to read? How daunting it seemed at first. Many of us thought: How will we ever get to the point of reading "those big thick books!" But we did. We built upon our foundation of knowledge, slowly and consistently and repeatedly. Keep that in mind. Everything we do in life is a learning lesson to be built upon and mastered. ![]() Last edited by WATCH-ME-SHRINK; 04-07-2008 at 06:46 AM.. |

Monday 4/7
The scale had a little good news for me this morning....226.5 The higher calorie idea goes against every diet belief I've ever held, but I feel good and I'm certainly not hungry. If I can make some progress at this level, woo hoo! I think you are right Twyla about going into a bigger deficit from time to time. That coincides with what I have been realizing about myself and past success. I guess this is the cycling I was looking for. I am going to wait awhile for that. I really appreciate you coming by to offer your help .I shouldn't have resisted FitDay for so long. I spent some time setting up custom foods this weekend that are staples for me and now it is pretty easy. Any advice on ratios? I know protein can be too high, but I don't know how much that is. I do have Protein Power, I'll take a look at that tonight. |

Gina,
Since you mentioned Protein Power, they advocate there 7-10 carbs per meal, about 30 net roughly per day. Make sure you're deducting fiber when you post the counts. I would stick with higher fat, say 65-70% per meal, arond 7-10% carbs, and the rest protein. There's a page in PP for Life book, towards the back, that is a table which shows how much protein Eades recommends per height/body weight for women to give you a rough estimate. Once you determine what your maintenance calories are, try to not go below 500 calories less than that number. Allow yourself to eat at maintenace level cals at least one day a week. And for good measure throw in a day of a bit higher carbs, and make sure it's on a day that you know you'll be getting exercise. This over-restriction of calorie thing is commonly viewed with skepticism, but it should be taken into consideration when one is stalled for long periods of time. It quite likely could be all one needs in getting the metabs revved again. Best of luck to ya, Gina. Glad you're seeing the downward trend. |

Tuesday 4/8
A little more good news today.....226.0 Almost what I have in my signature (I'm too stubborn to change it). Calorie Total 1812 Fat: 113 1019 63% Carbs: 74 270 17% Protein: 82 328 20% My carbs were a little higher than I had planned. I ate a lot of veggies, but there were also some dried cranberries in those numbers (not the soaked in sugar kind, but still dried fruit). That chewy sweet/tart taste is yummy but I think I will just not buy them for awhile. That is something good about me- I have a lot of willpower in the store. My family wishes I didn't .I didn't workout yesterday (unless you count studying Callanetics) so my maintanance calorie level was 2220. I had a deficit of just shy of 400. It's a good thing because I just couldn't have eaten anymore... and I had butter, olive oil and alfredo sauce. I can't believe I am saying that. My new shoes should come today |

Wednesday 4/9
226.5 again. Bounce, bounce I know daily fluctuations of a half a pound don't really mean anything, but jeez. I suppose last week at this time I was bouncing around 227-228 so its progress. |

Thursday 4/10
226 again today. Boing, boing. TOM is due any minute and my rings are tighter so I know I'm retaining water. I'm usually good for a little whoosh when its over. My totals for Wednesday: Total: 2062 Fat: 151 1356 68% Carbs: 82 264 13% Fiber: 16 0 0% Protein: 94 375 19% I have to watch my carb creep. Yesterday's are from a few black beans, veggies and a pear so I'm not going to sweat it too much. On to the important news... I ran yesterday . I did Day 1 of the Couch to 5K program. My shoes came, I downloaded the podcast and away I went! It wasn't nearly as hard as I remember from last time so I am either in better shape or the podcast really helped. I am very fortunate to live on the coast so I go down and run on the beach. It was a gorgeous day too. I'm going back today. I'll try picking up the pace a little during my jog segments. |

![]() As for the VERY SLIGHT gain -- AND BEFORE TOM, NO LESS -- I wouldn't give it another thought. I think you can claim victory on this one, Gina. You're eating more, and you didn't gain hardly at all with pre-TOM stuff, and now back to siggy????? ![]() KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK. |

Hi Holly & Twyla. Thanks for stopping by
![]() I have to say I am feelin' pretty good right now . I can't believe how much I can eat and still be losing. Thanks again for prodding me Twyla. I just don't think I would have come to this conclusion on my own. I have to say I am loving FitDay too. I especially like the graph that shows calories eaten vs calories consumed and the weight graph puts the bouncing up and down in better perspective.I noticed a couple of days ago though that my maintanence calories are higher than I thought. When I first entered everything I could swear it said 2200 on a day with no exercise and 2400 with a middle-of-the-road workout. I noticed yesterday it was almost 2900 with no workout. I know I'm heavy but jeez, doesn't that seem like a lot? I'm just going to leave things alone for the time being because it seems to be working and honestly, without drinking olive oil I would have a hard time getting that high with good, healthy food. Twyla, if you ever even thought about thinking about wanting to run, I would reccomend the C5K. And get the podcast. It made a world of difference to me. The music wouldn't have been my first choice, but it works when I'm out there. I turn it up just enough so I can hear the guy say when to run and when to walk and the music blends in with the waves and birds. As soon as the last run session is over I change to my own music for the cooldown and the rest of the way back home. |

Saturday 4/12
224.0 today Down 1.5 from yesterday! Finally, new ground. I was reading another gal's journal and she calls them "virgin pounds" if she's lower than ever before .I had a good day yesterday: Total: 2100 Fat: 164 1472 70% Carbs: 50 150 7% Fiber: 12 0 0% (there was more fiber than that, but I usually don't enter it for custom foods) Protein: 119 477 23% I had a protein shake for breakfast, leftover steak & veggies for lunch and went to Carl's Jr with DS14 for a "Low Carb $6 Burger" for dinner. Then we went to Target and I found some workout pants on clearance for $6.24. They were XL (not XXL) so I wondered whether they would fit. I got them home and put them on and they were baggy! If they had been more expensive I would take them back, but I figure for six bucks I can cinch them up and get a few week's use out of them. I got up early and did W1D3 of C25K. The beach is gorgeous at 6:30 am. The sun was coming up over the mountains and the sky was all pink and blue. Nobody out there but me, the surfers and the pelicans. I'm going to do a few chores and later on we are going to the archery range for a little practice and then to town for some shopping and out to dinner at our favorite BBQ place. |

Monday 4/14
Crazy day yesterday and no time to post. I didn't even enter anything into FitDay. I was at 226 Sunday and this morning. I do tend to follow that pattern- hit a low weight and then bounce back up a couple of pounds, then down to the low weight again for awhile and then go to an even lower weight and repeat the whole cycle. I put the low weight in my stats as soon as I see it and that motivates me to stay honest to get back there. The weight graph in FitDay really helps to keep the bouncing from driving me crazy. I ran again yesterday, but I did a fourth day of week 1. When I got down to the beach to run week 2 wasn't on my phone like I thought so I did week 1, but when it was time to walk again I counted to ten slowly before I slowed to the "brisk walk." It made a difference. I'm getting excited about a 5k run coming up in November. They call it "The Run Forrest Run" because the finish line is in front of a Bubba Gump's restaurant . The point I run to is 1.34 miles so I'm doing 2.68 a day (one of the benefits of being married to a surveyor), but I need to find another point so I'm doing over 3 miles. The real killer is the stairs to get up the bluff to the parking lot after I've run. I think that should count double mileage. |
