Friday 10/24
207.5 today. Up another half pound (I was really 207.0 yesterday, not .7). Not a big gain, I know I'm leaner, but still not the direction I want to go. I'll watch and wait and stay the course. The reason it concerns me is I feel so FULL all the time, trying to get my protein in, trying to eat early enough in the day. We'll see. I wish those fat % calipers would get here. I was reading on the Muscle Mattters board where someone posted about no weight training until you are close to goal because you'll bulk up under your fat. I think its silly to wait, but there is some truth to it. I've been running in sand, which is quite a thigh workout. I've been wearing the same pants now for about three months and the waist is getting pretty baggy, but the thighs are a bit tighter. Which is really strange for me because I have always been an apple shape with quite a muffin top.

Gina,
You've just begun to tweak. Give this time to work. You may need to adjust macros and cals here and there, but you won't know until you give it time. As for the "bulking," you may have a point. When we build muscle, if there's still fat to be burned on top the muscle that's being built, it will appear to "bulk." This is where nutrition is so important. And you're "dialing in" on that, but it's imp to find those magic numbers for your body. One thing you may try is throwin in a couple of 400-500 calorie deficit days per week (zig-zagging cals). For ex., if you're going for say 2200 avg per week, try one or two days at 1900ish. They don't have to be non-run days. You can keep your carbs high on those days for the fuel/stamina, but cut back on your fat on those days. Shoot for no more than 100 gr of fat per day on your lower cal days, and keep carbs about where they are. You can still get in plenty of healthy fat while keeping it at 100 grams or less. I meant to mention this to you this morning and I was in a hurry. Also, if weighing every day is disappointing, don't. Weigh once a week. I avg'd once a week weigh-ins when I was doing TKD and even when I began carb rotations (esp when I began carb rotations, because it's then the scale is most likely to reflect water retention). Hang in there. And if you're worried about weight training NOW as opposed to LATER....I don't suppose there's any way I could talk you into Callanetics, is there....?????? ![]() Can you say "long, strong AND lean"?

I know you are right about the Callanetics. I even bought a DVD. I did it a couple of times... can you say "lame?" Seriously, I don't have enough coordination to do that right.
Then I started running and kind of pushed it out of my mind. I just need to buckle down and do it. I know it works.I'm OK with my thighs bulking up from running for now. I know its for the greater good. I think you are right about the lower cal days too. I was thinking once a week (I am afraid of the slow metabolism thing), but I'll try two. I really do understand that my weight flucs up and down. I've tried weighing once a week and I would catch a low day and then a high day and then be upset, not knowing there was probably 3-4 low days in between. I weigh on my Wii now which charts and graphs my weight so I can see the downward trend regardless of the daily ups and downs. It helps. I think I'll make today a low cal day. I had a good breakfast and lunch, I'll drink a protein shake after my run this afternoon and then the family really wants Chinese & that is not my fave anyway. They do have a pretty good beef or chicken stick if I feel like it and really good green tea. |

Saturday 10/25
206.1 today. A new low. Cals a bit lower and eating very light at night seems to be the key for me. I did my 3 mile run and had a protein shake about 6:00 and that was it for the night (except water and diet soda). Calories 1,875 Fat 114.1 1,024 55 % Carbohydrate 81.5 311 17 % Dietary Fiber 24.0 Protein 133.9 544 29 % The last time I had downward movement on the scale was 10/21, and 10/20's food looked like this: Calories 1,730 Fat 96.9 871 50 % Carbohydrate 43.4 153 9 % Dietary Fiber 5.0 Protein 172.8 704 41 % Protein is up and fat is down. I remember that evening I was just a little hungry and needed more protein for the day so I had a piece of salmon about 6:00 and that was it. See Twyla, I told you tracking was a good idea! ![]() |

Saturday evening
Blech. I feel yucky. I had a really nice day... went for my run, showered, went out for breakfast, took a drive up the coast and picked out pumpkins, stopped at the grocery and was planning on grilling steaks for dinner. About 4:00 I decided I need to have my CO (it has been awhile). Since it was warm I didn't want coffee and I thought I would just try it off the spoon. Gack, gack, gack. I choked it down and then felt yucky the rest of the evening. No dinner for me. Sunday 10/26
205.9 It is funny seeing such tiny gains and losses on the Wii. It could be my pajamas, but if anything they seem a little heavier than yesterday's (I don't weigh nekkid in the living room). Whatever, I'll take it. Coffee's on, bacon and eggs for breakfast, the SC oats early afternoon. Tide is way out at 4:00 today and I'm scheduled for 4 miles. |

Gina!!!!!!!! Congrats on the downwards!
![]() Yes, tracking shauh does it! CO by itself makes me green too........ ![]() I don't know if you've tried this, but I like melting 1/2 to 1 Tbs of CO in the nuker, then pouring it over 1/2 c f/free cottage cheese; 1 Tbs of s/f Davinci's; 1 Tbs of Cookies & Cream protein whey powder; and 1 Tbs roasted chopped pecans. OMG. It's a great little mini meal, chock full of protein, good fats, and I've even stirred in Cheerios or oat bran (or chopped bananas, or berries, or chopped apples, or Fiber One) for some carb balance when I need it. It's the closest, healthiest thing to DQ's Blizzard, but w/o the guilt. Gotta try it. Hope you had a good four-miler today. Later on. |

Hi Twyla, that cottage cheese concoction does sound good. I was just thinking this evening I need to eat more cottage cheese. It packs a powerful protein punch and I really like it. When I was pregnant with DS15 I craved cottage cheese and bananas. I had never even heard of anyone eating that before, but I still like it. With bacon or crumbled sausage too.
I still won't be eating CO off the spoon anytime again soon, but I think it may not have been what made me feel sick yesterday. I got some turkey lunchmeat at Costco that I also ate yesterday. I had some more for a little snack early this afternoon and the same thing happened. I recovered (mostly) in time for my run. It was a good run. The tide was out and I made pretty good time (for me anyway). I made the 1.5 mile point in 19 minutes so if I'd have turned around I probably would be able to do 5K in less than 40 minutes. That's what I'm shooting for. I did the whole four miles in 56 minutes. My previous best time was 58. Fartlekking works! Food didn't turn out so well today. I had a lot of CO this morning. It keeps me "regular" and I was needing a little help. I can't believe the stuff I will talk about on the internet.Calories 1,908 Fat 150.3 1,348 66 % Carbohydrate 58.5 228 11 % Dietary Fiber 10.3 Protein 113.6 459 23 % Tomorrow is a rest day, but I'll run a little with the kids at school. |

Today's food:
Calories 1,913 Fat 98.4 884 46 % Carbohydrate 69.8 262 14 % Dietary Fiber 11.1 Protein 189.1 770 40 % I had planned on making a quick run to Costco and coming home with a rotis chicken for dinner. But, all the guys joined me and wanted to buy a crab trap and some school supplies and the car needed gas and they decided they wanted pizza at Costco. It was getting later and later (and not eating late seems like it might be helping my progress lately) so I finally went to the counter for a knife and fork and busted open the chicken in the food court. Had some cottage cheese out of the cart too. It was about 7:00, we'll see if that does anything to the scale in the morning. Might be kind of high on carbs for a non-run day (the carbs are from an apple, broc & cottage cheese), we'll see about that too I guess. Tomorrow we are having a late lunch potluck at work. I volunteered to bring green salad and I'll stash a baggie of chicken just in case nothing else works for me. I warned the guys they would be feeding themselves (two teens and a grown man should be able to manage) since I prob wouldn't be hungry and I'm going running. I may have posted this before, but I find it funny. I mentioned something the other day about "my four mile run" to my kids and they both seemed shocked. "You can run four miles?!" "Well, yeah. What did you think I was doing down at the beach all the time?" "A little running, walking mostly." "No, I quit walking weeks ago." "Wow" I have less than two weeks til my race. I'm excited and feeling pretty good. I always hear people do better at races than at home, adrenaline or something I guess, I hope that's true. |

207 today. Up 1.5 lbs. Could be regular flucs, I am a bouncer. Could be extra carbs with no running yesterday. I'll just keep at it, it's probably just regular bounce. |

still Tuesday......
argh, I'm not even adding up my totals today. B.............. cottage cheese and sausage Sn............ Protein bar L.............. Potluck, salad, chicken & turkey LD............ Rice pudding D............. SC oats The potluck turned out fine, plenty of good, on-plan stuff to eat. All was well until the rice pudding. I absolutely love rice pudding and with a wheat allergy its one of the few desserts I can eat even if I want to. Not so bad I figured, it was a small portion and I was running in 2 or 3 hours. Then we have a really stressful, annoying meeting. I go home, ranting to my family and then I had some SC oats because I was going running. You see, I didn't stress-eat, I stress-forgot that I had already had rice. ![]() And before that, I was walking around, feeling all smug that my principal's ding-a-lingness wasn't sending me face first into a bag of m&ms and the couch. I actually thought to myself "Why should I let her dumbness get in the way of my goals?" Ok, my curiosity go the better of me, I added it all up. Calories 2,060 Fat 92.2 828 40 % Carbohydrate 165.2 651 32 % Dietary Fiber 13.8 Protein 138.4 566 28 % Not as bad as I thought I guess. I'll see how tomorrow turns out on the scale. My run was good. I got a little bit of a stomach ache as I was leaving, so I took it at a nice, easy pace. Finished about 5k in 43 minutes. Not setting any speed records, but I ran that like it was nothing almost. Tomorrow is 4 miles with fartleks. I'm going to have to REMEMBER what I ate because that will be harder. |

Gina,
I think what happened to you happened to me....that "carb up" served to fuel you at a time when your glycogen had gotten rather low. That's the whole theory of the leptin response....that's why/how it works. It works BEST for those who work out at high intensity. Yeah! And those cals? Fugettaboutit! You did great....."dingalingness"......LOL! |

205.3 today. Lost the bounce up plus a little. Yay! I did feel awfully good during last night's run. I think you're right. I wonder how long it will last? Didn't they talk about a week to 10 days in the TDK thread? That would be nice. |

Do you mean how long the "carb up" will last?
It depends on what you eat, how depleted you were to start with, and how many carbs you eat on a refeed and/or a carb up day. If you're doing TKD, you go for a week, so that by week's end, you're energy is trashed if you're putting in high intensity workouts. That's why carb rotations are more helpful for leaning out via workouts and clean eating because you get to keep your energy levels more sustained with more frequent carb feedings. Gina, I'll say it again. Don't be afraid to up your carbs a few days a week --on RUN DAYS. You will be surprised. Way to go on the losses, woman! ![]() |

Yea, that's what I was wondering. I am getting less nervous about adding more carbs. It seems to be working out OK when I do. Alright, I'll up tomorrow. Thanks for checking in.

Friday 10/31
Well I have had an un-fun couple of days. Wednesday night after I posted, I was piddiling around in the kitchen and I heard a crash come from down the hall. My son, 12, had gotten stuck in the shower (very old door with a sticky latch), tried to push it open, and the glass broke and sliced the back of his hand open in four places. We wrapped it up (Well, my other son who is 15 did. That kid was amazing through the whole thing) and DH and I took him to the ER. They saw him pretty quickly. They did an x-ray to make sure there was no glass left, the ER doc cleaned the cuts out and stitched him up. He called an ortho doc on the phone because he said it looked like a tendon might be nicked. The ER doc said the ortho doc said to "come by his office tomorrow and let him have a look at it." OK I figure, that doesn't sound too serious. They gave him an antibiotic and suggested Tylenol and Ibuprophen and we went home. He slept fine and said he felt pretty good the next morning. DH was able to work at home and I went to school, planning to call the ortho doc, make an appointment for later and come home a little early (we were celebrating Halloween at school that day, tough day for a sub). About 8:30, DH calls my cell and says the ortho doc's office called the house and said DS12 was scheduled for surgery, had he been fasting? WTH? Fasting means blood tests or anethesia and I didn't think he needed blood tests for cuts. So I'm starting to get nervous. I called the office at school, the secretary called a sub and I met DH & DS at the surgery center. We go through all the intake stuff, but the whole time we don't really know what's going on since this is the first we've heard of surgery. The nurses were as helpful as could be, but they didn't really know either. The ortho doc finished up another surgery and came to see us. The cuts were worse that the ER doc let on. He had at least one tendon cut pretty badly and maybe second. He really needed surgery. I was worried about general anesthesia. I had my gallbladder out a few years ago and the anesthesia made me miserable. I didn't want my son to go through that. The anesthesiologist came in and said we had two options- they could do a general, or they could do a block on his arm and just sedate him. We opted for the block and sedation. The surgery went well. The ortho doc said one tendon was 90% cut and probably would have popped if he didn't repair it. Another was 50% cut. He said he redid some of the ER stiches and they put a cast on the arm. DS had a little bit of a hard time with his arm being totally numb as he was coming out of sedation, but we got him home and he was fine after he slept for a couple of hours. He's on antibiotics and pain meds now and doing well. I'm home from some horrible day-long meetings I was supposed to go to today. The doc said he might be OK to go to school Monday. We'll see how he's feeling. Right now he's mastering video games with his left hand. The good news is I didn't eat a single non-plan food through the whole thing. It didn't even occur to me as a possibility. I haven't tracked or measured or weighed or worked out, but all in all I feel pretty good about it. I'm just going to get back to normal eating, try to get enough sleep (he's on meds every four hours) and see what happens. |

Gina,
I'm so very sorry to hear about this horrible experience with your son...bless his sweet heart. My prayers of healing and strengthening go out to you and your family. May he have a speedy recovery and be restored to perfect health in His name. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. Sunday 11/9
Today's the day to get back at it. I've been slacking since DS's accident. Haven't really "fallen off the wagon," just haven't been tracking and exercising like I should. I am up about 3-4 lbs to show for it. So, I just got off FitDay and entered breakfast and projected lunch. Will probably do dinner out since we are headed for town to do our "big shop." DH took the boys fishing and I'm going to get caught up a little around here. The good news is I ran my 5K yesterday! Loved it! I think I am hooked on racing now. I posted this on the C25K thread yesterday: I did it! I made both of my goals.... I didn't walk and I didn't come in last. It was fabulous. I woke up early, about 5:30. The race is in a town about 45 minutes from us and I needed to be there in time to pick up my bib and check in. I was just out of the shower and my 12 yo son (the one that had hurt himself earlier) came and told me he had a horrible headache. This kid never had a headache before, so I was worried. I gave him some Advil and told him to try to get a little more sleep. Everyone else got up and got ready, we were either going to the race or back to the ER. I had oatmeal and eggs for breakfast and by the time we needed to leave DS said he was feeling a little better and could go with me to the race. He drug himself to the car in his blanket. DH said he would just sit with him in the car if he didn't feel up to standing by the finish line. I told them I thought I would be about 40 minutes so they would know when to come watch. I got there just in time to see a bunch of kids crossing the finish line for a 3K they had earlier this morning. The race is called the "Run Forrest Run" because it starts and ends in front of a Bubba Gump's restaurant. Forrest was even there to high 5 the kids as they came across the finish line. The arch that is the starting line says "Run Forrest, run." And the finish line (on the back of the arch, the race runs out and back)....... you guessed it "Stop Forrest, stop." I lined up for the 5K. While we are waiting for the race to start, they start drawing bib numbers for prizes- really hokey stuff like a fire log, a can of yams and motoroil. I won a bag of pork rinds. I must look like a low carber. Finally, we were off. People started passing me right away. I just stuck to the right and let them go. The route is absolutely gorgeous. Hugs the ocean, waves crashing on the rocks, sea otters bobbing in the waves, sunny, breezy and 60 degrees. I forgot my music, so I got to listen to myself breathe. I hate listening to myself breathe, but I got over it. About mile two, I began feeling like a "real" runner when people were lined up to hand me a paper cup of water. I took one, drank about half, and then crushed the cup. Woo Hoo! (I then carefully placed the crushed cup in the appropriately labeled recycling recepticle). About this time I start passing people who had passed me earlier. Many of them were walking now. Slow and steady wins the race. I rounded a corner and realized I was almost back and it was all downhill. About 10 yards from the finish line is my family. DS was feeling better. I got my high 5 from Forrest and my race was run! It took about 42 minutes. I don't know how I placed yet. I finished somewhere near the middle, but the prizes are by age group. I didn't go to the awards since I figured I didn't win anything, but later that day DH saw an older lady with a ribbon that said 70th place so I might have. We ate lunch at Bubba Gumps (something we save for special occasions) and milled around the town a little. I bought some socks with sea otters on them. We're home now and my hips and legs are a little sore. I don't usually run on pavement. Thanks for the good wishes Kelly & Twyla. Its funny, I went just about my whole childhood without playing any sports and never winning any kind of ribbon or trophy for them. Now, as a mom in my forties, I have several medals for archery and a "Ribbon of Completion" for running. I have freed my inner athelete. ![]() |

Gina, it's very liberating, isn't it, discovering a passion within us that was just waiting to be loosed?
Ever read More magazine? There's so many inspirational stories in it of women 40+ who have rediscovered "life" after forty, and are better than evah! Perfect example: Lorna Cavin. She'll soon be 50 years old. You can google her name and find lots of inspiration from videos and such: Here's one of three -- I look at her and say: Age is so irrelevant! |

I haven't been here in awhile. Haven't been tracking much either. I usually get through breakfast and lunch and fizzle out. I guess that's better than nothing because my bounce up pounds are gone. I was back to 205.4 this morning on the Wii. Ugh, I have a horrible head cold and we're going to Disneyland this weekend. I might see if the gal who is subbing for me Friday wants to come tomorrow too. A day of sleep sounds good. I didn't run yesterday like I had planned, so I did some floor exercises- planks, crunches and tricep dips on the fireplace. I tried my stability ball again and I just rolled off. I think it's going to the next yard sale. Gotta run. Jr needs to get to school. |

Not much time, but wanted to post 203.9 today! I've been up, down, up, up lately. We've been very busy with DS's hand, house haggling and a trip to Disneyland. With all that and the fact that it gets dark less than an hour after I get home means I haven't been running as much as I would like. |

Wow, I haven't been here in awhile. I didn't "fall off the wagon" or anything bad like that, I've just been super busy and haven't had a reliable internet connection for a couple of months. DS finished up therapy and his hand is good. We bought a new house that is great, but a lot of work. I'm doing some training for our county office of ed that is keeping me busy when school is out. All in all life is good but I haven't been as focused as I have been in the past. I bounced up a few pounds over Christmas but I've lost those and I saw my lowest weight in years this morning...201. The new house is in a great neighborhood for running. I run just under a mile on a slight down incline to the beach, climb down the bluff and do another couple of miles on the beach. That ends the running portion of my workout. Then I climb up the bluff and walk the uphill mile back home. My weight has changed very little, but I'm down a jean size and that's what really matters. I haven't been doing much of an upper body workout (except carrying boxes) but I have more definition in my arms and shoulders... from fat loss I think.I think I have found the secret to maintaining for when the time comes. I can maintain pretty easily by just "eating right." Whole foods, no trans-hydrogenated-high-fructose junk and no wheat due to my allergy. I can eat a couple of pieces of sprouted grain bread, some oatmeal, fruit and yogurt and still lose if I time things right. Lately I've noticed I can lose on the same amount of food if I eat the bulk of it early in the day. I'm losing very ssllloooowwwlllyyy, but I'm OK with that. Its the first time I've been able to lose and not balloon right back up if I eat a bowl of ice cream. I truly know that I can eat this way for the rest of my life. In fact, I think that's really what is going on. I changed to a healthy diet, for the sake of health and the weight loss is really almost a side benefit. I need to find another race to sign up for, it keeps me focused. There is a 6 miler this summer that I can register for in starting in April and I think I'll look for a 5K to run in the spring. |

I didn't weigh on the Wii today (my official weigher), but the wonky bathroom scale shows a slight bounce up. There's no reason for it and I think TOM is coming so I'm not going to sweat it. I mailed of my SASE for priority registration for the six miler yesterday. Now I'll have something to look forward to and keep me on the straight and narrow. There's a 5K in May, but its on DS15's BD weekend. I'll keep looking. The DU dinner is this weekend and I think I will make my "skinny jean goal." I couldn't even zip them when I bought them (a size too small because they were half price) and now they are pretty comfortable. What's weird is I haven't lost more than 5 lbs. |

Hey, Gina!
![]() ![]() ![]() I've REALLY missed you! Congrats on the new house, and even more congrats on keeping focused and the new low! I'm sure the running has played a HUGE part in your success.I hope you'll "break out the weights" as soon as the dust settles from the move. It will make a huge difference in your metabolism, among other things. Keep up the great work. I'll be watching on the sidelines when you sign up for your next race. I remain grateful to you for your inspiration. |

Hi Twyla. It's good to "see" you.
![]() Not much new to report here. TOM isn't here yet but I feel like I could eat the paint off the walls (and I just painted them, so it would be fresh ).I'm making tostadas for dinner (taco salad for me) and trying to get a few chores done since we are going to be out of town for the weekend. The dinner we are attending shouldn't be a problem. They've had steak every year we've been. We are going with some friends we haven't seen since last summer and I'm down about 15 lbs since then so that should be fun. Twyla, I peeked in your journal to see how you are doing (Great! So much dedication) and I saw you reccomended Kathy Smith: Lift Weights to Lose Weight to someone. Amazon has vol 1 & 2 for $12.99. I must say I am intrigued. |

Tuesday 2/24
No weight update. TOM has landed and I am avoiding the scale for the time being. The weekend was fun. Good friends, good dinner, a few rum & Diet Cokes. I got quite a few compliments on my progress. ![]() I had a great run last night- about 4 miles on the beach at a nice & easy pace. There was a gorgeous sunset, but then it got dark on me and I got the creeps a little. Rest day today and I'll go out again tomorrow evening- a little earlier this time and/or I'll pick up the pace. I'm going to a training tomorrow and lunch is being served. Last time I got "lunch" from this place it was a sub sandwich, pasta salad and chips. ![]() Luckily, there is a Carl's Jr a block away and I went and got a lettuce wrapped burger. I'll put some snacks in my bag and hit CJ's again if need be. |

Hey, Gina.
Wise woman, you are, to avoid that scale for a few days. We don't need the depressing head games to accompany our party. Every time I read your posts of you running ON THE BEACH, I get this....MAN-SHE'S-TOO-LUCKY!....feeling. And at sunset of all times! My favorite thing in the world, sunsets! I'd toss that Carb Crap tomorrow too and just pack a snack and grab a good one on the way out! Ya got that right. Have a great day. |
