Whoa, Zer! You know all about neuropathy then! That, and the stroke, is the source of Ron's difficulty walking.

Today was about what I expected - get up, ride around for an hour, get off at social security, 2 hours there. It was standing room only but someone gave their seat to Ron.

I had prepared some snacks and brought them. Good thing. Then another hour ride to get to Vital Statistics. They left us there for 2 hours. Then the ride was an hour late, and we rode around for 2 hours.

Ron met an old acquaintance, and the next thing you know he had turned a bunch of grumpy people complaining about the service into a soul music sing-along. The driver thanked us repeatedly when she let us off.

It's nice to know we are clients they like to see. I would hate to be, OH GOD! IT'S THEM!

I got a fair amount of knitting done. I'm working on the decreases of my turq/magenta/orange hat.

I took my lithium with a slimfast low-carb, and bacon, outside vital statistics. I thanked a lady who helped me and she was completely shocked. I found that very sad.

I also handed out candy to all our drivers.

The good news, if our SS cards arrive soon we ought to be able to get out passports this month, and that means we'll definitely be able to go on the cruise. That would rock.

Anyway, the worst thing we have now is a trip to the Post Office to apply for our passports when our SS cards come. And Chuck will give us a ride (we'll buy him lunch).

Tiiiiired. I'm going to try to take a nap. Tomorrow I have to get up at 5.

Ron had filed our paperwork. He lost the Social Security cards and his birth certificate. I had my birth certificate and our marriage license. At the minimum, you need state ID (remember we don't drive), SS, and birth certificate to get a passport. I also have some other stuff like bank statements, current homeowner's flood insurance policy, etc. Once we get the SS cards we can get our passports.

The passports need to be active by the end of the year, the passport has to be valid for 6 months before we take the cruise in early June. Ron's been so sick I haven't had time to get the paperwork.

Mom and Dad are buying tickets for the whole family, 4 kids, 3 spouses, and 4 grandkids to go on a 4 day cruise from LA to Mexico and back. It ought to be a lot of fun. They ordered Ron a wheelchair, and asked for early dinner because he goes to bed early. I'll just be glad when we have the passports over with, then I can relax and figure out what to take on the trip.

I plan to knit myself a gorgous lacy black shawl. The pacific gets cold at night, I used to live in CA for 15 years, so I'll be glad I brought it. It could dress up everything from jeans to an evening gown. I'm putting the yarn on my list of things I might like for Christmas, I make it easy for Ron. I give him a list of items, item numbers, prices, how much I want it (*** is the most), etc. He just calls and orders it, then it shows up. He hides the box in his room until Christmas when SURPRISE! I get just what I wanted. I try to have a variety of things I really want so whatever it is will be a surprise, and also be something I'll enjoy.

One year Ron shocked me and got every single thing on my list!

So, why I am I blogging instead of napping?

We went to work this morning, I did a "pull" (took the money out of machines, counted it), I helped Ron out, too. We had trainees! They use a room right next to the cafeteria and they are very good for business. I thanked them profusely and sincerely as they lined up to buy sodas and snacks. A few had some minor problems and I assisted them. I like helping people buy things. I love it.

I told Ron I don't like to see him up on his feet because I know he's hurting, but I can't do all my work and his in the time he allows me. So he just does his work, and I watch him hurting. I don't want to change him but I hate to see him hurt!

After work, we came out and the ride was there! Wow! Unheard of. Then we got a fairly straight trip to the bank. We handled all our business and as I pushed him towards the door I saw a man dressed in a metrolift uniform. They wear a specific uniform.

I asked "Are you for 'our name'?" He said yes! I let out a happy squeal and galloped for the door, pushing Ron. The driver laughed. We got ANOTHER straight trip to Walmart! Yes!

I had enough time at Walmart to fill 2 prescriptions for Ron, try on jeans and long sleeved tshirts (I am a Walmart and Hanes Medium in tops), deliberate over a new deodorant, and decide to buy some new soap. I tend to get into ruts (cube steak, vanilla slimfast, peanuts, etc), so I like to change things up now and then. They were out of Vanilla Slimfast and I forgot my ground sausage but other than that I had a blast.

A lot of it was boring stuff like toilet paper and paper towels, but I did get 2 new tshirts in favorite colors and a 6 pack of diet dr bottles. I like to drink one first thing in the morning, my eye opener. Oh, and I got a new lamp and bulb (that cost about $25), a 3 way CFL bulb. Very awesome. I like them but I got an incandescent bulb too. It's foolish that the best light in the house is in my kitchen! So now I have decent lighting where I need it, by my chair, and positioned in such a way that Ron can't bump into it, knock it over, and kill it (happens a lot).

I'm downloading Skillet and a little ELO while I do this. I made my deposit at the bank. I get $35 each week for internet money. I plan to buy some angora/wool yarn and make Ron some mittens, even though he swears he doesn't want any.

I noticed he never took off his new hat today. He's cold, didn't sleep last night, and is a little cranky.

After I finished shopping, I had just enough time to get something to eat and our ride pulled up. Another straight trip! Someone really likes us!

When I got home this guy was sitting in his truck, across the street, staring at us. I'm used to being a spectacle now. You've got a blind guy in a wheelchair, bags of stuff, a cab driver, we are interesting if nothing else.

I went to check the mail, as I did I noticed the guy was still watching. He looked familiar. Normally by now I'd have been on the phone with the sherriff's department. I'm glad I didn't.

He works for the contractor next door and was on his LUNCH. He's rebuilding the fence right outside my bedroom. So I can kind of forget about the nap today. Good news, we don't spend a penny on the new fence.

Good thing I didn't call the cops, huh? He can feel good about "helping the blind man", and we get our fence back.

That's it for now. It's gotten quiet so maybe I can get my nap after all.

Yeah, it ought to be a lot of fun.

My stupid gallbladder is acting up again. UGH. I am so sick of it. We don't have insurance, I figure if God wants it out it'll "go" in some spectacular fashion, I can go to the county hospital, and we're done. Or maybe it'll settle down in a day or so, and not give me any trouble for decades.

But the women in my family tend to get their gallbladders out early, even if they're thin. Ugh.

Now I'm waiting on Ron to finish doing the report so I can file it online with the State. Up, he's calling me.

175.5!

Also, the day after I measured 32.5, it went back up to 33. Today it's back down to 32.5.

I'm glad I cut out peanuts. Gotta go to work, more later.

Today at work I was walking down the hallway (literally half a mile long), pushing Ron's empty wheelchair. A guy walking towards me, doing double takes. As he passed me, he said "D*MN! You lost weight!"

I'm really motivated to eat smart today, having lost a good chunk yesterday.

The worst thing that happened today - Ron almost ate a cat treat. He got the bag of cat treats mixed up with a bag of dry cereal he keeps in his dresser drawer. EW.

Went to work, still lots of trainees. I love them.

Came home, ate a small snack (cheddar cheese and raw sugar snap peas). Chuck came by and took Ron and I to the sporting goods store. I asked nicely if they had a wheelchair, and put Ron into it. He was very grateful, the shoe department is way in the back, across the store. He likes the wheelchair and I do too, I told him I want the State to buy him something like that. He agreed.

I know Ron's tastes, so I got him 4 pairs of shoes. He got the pair he always gets. I also got him the spring type shoelaces, they are rubberized and make it easy to slip the shoe on and off. You don't have to tie it, either.

While Ron tried on shoes, I scampered off and found some wonderful toasty wool socks. I hate cold feet. I also found the perfect long-sleeved tshirt in purple. I told Ron they'd be $20 but I was happy to pay it. On our way out, I picked up a diet Dr Pepper. Ron teased me as I stopped the wheelchair right next to the compressor hum on the soda fridge "They're playing your song, Heather".

When we got to the register, I told the cashier, "These are separate" and Ron said "No they aren't, I'm paying for all of it." How sweet! He may not be conventionally romantic but I found it a wonderful surprise.

Chuck had to run, so he dropped us at home and I did a little internet shopping. I bought a couple of knitting design books from alibris and should get them in a few weeks. I've bought lots of books from them and I'm always happy. What do I care if it used to live in a library? Better my bookcase than a trash heap!

Nap time. Nothing planned for tomorrow - I might take the bus to the dollar store but that's it.

Well, the dollar store went belly-up. Ron had a lot of trouble sleeping so I got up at 7, planned my trips, and took my cart to the bus stop. I got a good amount of knitting done at the bus stops today.

Ron woke up around 1 PM, so I'm glad I didn't wake him up.

I looked for the dollar store, discovered it was gone, and went to Krogers. I had fun looking around and got some fun stuff, proscuitto ham, and some fancy cheddar cheese. They were selling turkey dinners so I bought one. It had 2 sides (this was at the deli). I got rice dressing and regular dressing. I ate the turkey meat, closed it up, and put it in my cart. I gave it to Ron when I got home, and he couldn't even finish it.

While shopping, I stacked up 17, three pound, cans of shortening. I added a 1 pound can of lard and waited. A nice-looking man wandered by, looking bored and unhurried. I said "Excuse me, I hate to bother you, but I've lost this much weight since March. Could you take a picture of me with the lard?" He did a double take (I showed him a before photo), laughed, and said he'd be happy to do it. We'll see how it comes out.

It took me a minute or two to put all the shortening BACK on the shelf. It really hit home, just how much I've lost. I did buy a 2.5 pound thing of lard, because I need it for cooking in my iron skillet.

Speaking of Skillet I had my music with me. I recently bought 30 new batteries for my player so I was a happy camper. I stood at my bus stops, knitting away on 4 double pointed needles, my work looking like a wooden porcupine, wearing my orange fingerless gloves and listening to Christian Heavy Metal. I had a lot of fun.

When I came home I talked to the cat, and Ron called me from the back of the house. He'd woken up only 30 minutes earlier and thought I was still asleep.

We've got a cold front coming in, lows in the 30's. I'll finish my 3-color hat just in time, then I'm making Mom, my aunt, and the other vendor's wife some fingerless gloves. I've got the hang of them now, they're very easy. Hopefully when I go to do my passport I can mail Mom her gloves. It gets pretty chilly in the SF Bay area, believe it.

Heather, what a GREAT IDEA, to capture all that fat graphically in a pic - your weight loss - with you standing beside 18 cans of fat. I can hardly wait to see it. What a story that man has, about his adventure at the market today!

I finished up my 3 color hat.

Zer, this one's for you. I took this photo about 4 years ago. Unfortunately, I got "sick" with some horrible manias and depressions. When I was sick, I ate sugar and I gained it all back with interest. This is how I'll look in another 10 pounds or so.

You could sit on a whole pallet of Crisco! I know you'll get down to goal and look FANTASTIC!

I recruited someone at work to take some photos of me wearing my knitting, and progress pictures, in case the "milkman's assistant" progress pics don't turn out.

I love how I have varied interests. I have some laceweight knitting yarn, but I'm crocheting a lace scarf out of it. I'm also working on fingerless gloves for Mom, but they may come out a little big - well, they can go to Zelda at work, who's a size 8. She is a tiny woman with tiny hands, but she's a size 8. Go figure.

Busy today but I ate smart. I also bought myself a case (15 cans) of Slimfast Low Carb at Sam's Club when I bought some candy for work.

Ron was a little cranky, but I reminded myself, anyone would be cranky in his shoes, and; it's not my job to keep him happy. His moods are his moods.

Perhaps more later, we'll see.

Pure 24kt gold, this reflection on a partner's moods and moodiness and a partner's RIGHT to have moods! Wow!

As Abraham Lincoln said: MOST PEOPLE ARE AS HAPPY AS THEY MAKE UP THEIR MIND TO BE. Ain't it the truth! Is R a fan of Honest Abe? If so, share this with him. I'm finding Abe a fascinating study, a melancholy man who had a lifetime of failures and who kept on keeping on. What an inspiration he is!

I don't think Ron would appreciate the quote right now. I might work it in as "I read that Abe Lincoln said..."

Today Ron had a bad day. He didn't sleep well and he was in a lot of pain. It's awful to watch him groan as he collapses into the wheelchair, but he was so !!!! stubborn he decided that he didn't want to take the wheelchair to Walmart after work.

We had to go, he was almost out of milk, and Saw Palmetto. Saw Palmetto is good for benign prostate enlargement, and he just came back as "normal" on his PSA test. It was either the Saw Palmetto, or a visit to a urologist and prescriptions.

Ron made a dosage mistake about 14 years ago while taking something called Hytrin. He dropped his blood pressure so low he literally wrote me a goodbye note and passed out on the floor! After his accident, they gave him something called Cardura which produced horrible delusions, angry raving all night long, and some other unmentionable side effects. As soon as he stopped taking it (his choice) he was fine.

You can see why we're not a fan of prostate prescriptions. Anyway, he started the Saw Palmetto a few weeks ago, it's worked very well, no side effects. He wants to keep taking it. We had to get it today if that was going to happen.

I managed to grab my photo album this morning, and I scanned some photos at Walmart. They'll become regular prints and digital. I can upload the digital photos, they are really cute. I love the one of me, about 3 years old, wearing a flannel nightgown, my glasses, and a cowgirl hat. I might make that my avatar!

About halfway through scanning my photos, Ron called. He had left his wheelchair at work and was sitting on a hard bench. His butt hurt. I'm not sure what he wanted me to do.

I told him, I can buy you a pillow. No, he said, he'd manage. A little while later he called and said he was going home in a cab. That would be a trick, because he could barely walk today. I grabbed some 18 inch square foam cushions and headed up to the front. When I was almost there, he called again. Never mind the cab.

I had him try out the cushions and he loved them. I took them back, went over to the quick checkout, paid for them, and gave them back to Ron. While in pain (his feet especially), he stopped complaining.

I managed to finish my photos and ordered the prints and CD's. I felt pretty smart doing it. It was all written so I had no problem. If someone had stood there and told me I'd have been miserable. I'd rather get a tooth filled than listen to someone tell me how to do something. Written only, please!

I got the stuff I needed (ground sausage and some vanilla Slimfast low-carb) and checked out. Amazingly our ride was on time and we had a pretty quick trip home. After I finish, I'm going to take a nap.

Mom's fingerless gloves are coming along great. As I get more proficient, I plan to make her a pair with a lace design on the back. They won't be hard. I have enough women interested in them to supply me with some variation.

I don't sell anything I make, I give it away. I like having artistic control. In high school, I was commissioned to make an afghan. It was absolutely hideous. Mint green, peach, brown, and bright blue. UGH. I used to get physically ill working with such ill-matched colors. I finally refunded the deposit and gave the partially completed project to another crocheter who thought it was "beautiful". She finished it for the original person.

So I plan to play with lace, cables, and such on the canvas of fingerless gloves.

Oh, and Ron said he'd like a pair of mittens after all.

I found my "Dancing Santas" tshirt in my closet. Even though it's "early", I wore it to work. It's an XL so it's loose.

A cat got into my knitting last night and had a lot of fun playing with it. The racket of clinking double-pointed wooden knitting needles woke me up. When I checked it out this morning, it had been dragged about 10 feet. I'm sure someone had a lot of fun with it, but they didn't even drop any stitches off the needles!

I'm not going to complain, like I told the milkman, at least it wasn't another dead rat.

Mom loves the Christmas idea for my Dad, so I pick them up tomorrow at Walmart. Ron and I are still figuring out what we'd like to do tomorrow. Work's been pretty quiet the last couple days.

When we got home, I ate a big lunch, cube steak, salad, a little bit of jicama. It is interesting, kind of sweet and crunchy. Not bad. Definitely not bad with ranch. I also cooked up some bacon.

I'm trying to eat more, earlier in the day. It's funny, when I woke up in the middle of the night, needing to pee, I thought "I wonder if I'm losing more weight?"

Sure enough, I had. I don't know if this is it for the month or not, but I think it's been about 8 pounds so far.

I'm going to start tracking my food so I can slowly add in more carbs. I'd like to eat sweet potato and such eventually.

I had a good nap. When I woke up Bubbacat was in my bed. I sure love that boy.

My neighbor's "guy" is working on the fence again, too. Yay! I could have slept later, but I've got tomorrow off.

Ron's taking me to Walmart and home again, then I might go do a little shopping for me. I'm thinking about it. I need to figure out when I'll get paid again so I can "do" my budget.

I have lots of cooked meat, so tomorrow I'm getting some salad and veggies. Maybe some cat treats, too.

Ron's doctor called and said he's prediabetic. Great. Now if he could taste his food, he could go low carb and it wouldn't matter. SIGH

Just what I needed to hear.

When Ron woke up, he wanted to talk to me about the prediabetes. He said he was worried. I said, you should be. I explained the stages of diabetes, ending with "And if you don't get it under control you'll end up next to Tom in the dialysis chair. You want to ride with him 3 times a week? And sit next to him for 4 hours, 3 times a week, during your treatments?" Tom is not a pleasant guy, and he still eats horribly. The kind of guy who thinks everything that happens isn't his fault. Even though it is. Ron gave an emphatic answer. NO.

I explained, the next stage, type 2, is sticking your finger. They have new lancets that wouldn't be too painful but he'd have to get a talking blood sugar meter. You'd also take medications, Ron.

Type one, you are getting insulin shots, you may end up in kidney failure, and you could end up with more nerve damage.

So, he's going back to lowcarb food... oops being paged

He was checking my bed. Part of it has a tendency to collapse if it isn't adjusted, and it was about to "go" again.

So, eating lowcarb. Eating salads. Taking Chromium. I'll do some more research but that's a good start.

I had a great time with Frosty tonight. He got up in my lap and I tried to coax him onto my shoulder. He said no, but compromised by curling up in my arms on my chest. I held him for about an hour as he snored happily. When he woke up, I gave him treats. Such a sweet baby.

Tomorrow I get my photos from Walmart!

I just measured and weighed myself. 173.5. Right before my period, awesome.

Then I measured. Hips = 41.5. I started out at least 52 inch hips, which means I've lost over a FOOT of fat off my hips.

It gets better, my waist is holding steady at 31.5 - which means I've ALSO lost over a foot of fat off my waist, as well.

[Expletive! That's a lot of fat!

I ate an extra "serving" of veggies yesterday - the jicama, plus 3 cups of salad. I plan to keep that up for a while, very slowly adding in more carbs. Throwing in all different stuff like apples and peanut butter kind of clouded the issue for me the last time I tried this.

[EXPLETIVE] that's a lot of fat. I'm still in shock.

Not to mention I'm now within 1.5 inches each on my hip and waist goals.

Huh. Will I keep that, or end up smaller when I hit 150.

When I hit 150. Not if. When.

I forgot to mention we have our SS cards.

I got gollywhomped with a nasty depression as soon as I got out of the shower. Curses.

I've got my fighting attitude and I'm determined to have fun today.

[Heather assumes a boxing stance and laces up her gloves, ready to go another round with depression]

I think I'm going to have 2 small meals, and take a lithium each.

My stomach is a little annoyed at me right now, but I'm battling the depression.

Before I got whalloped again, I bought some really cute jeans at Walmart (1 size down), a hot pink heathered hoodie (only $10!), and some new underwear. High rise undies and medium rise jeans, BEYOND tacky. Ew ew ew. I got some more bikinis.

Ron ordered the Thanksgiving Dinner for pickup Tuesday, and we get the passports done on Friday after work. Good.

Off I go to sift through the high-rises and put them in another drawer. It's a lot less exciting than it sounds.

I'm doing a cook night. I have some carne picada beef (very thin small slices of beef, almost like hamburger) in the skillet right now. When that's done, I'll cook some some sausage and then some eggs.

I can do eggs + sausage, eggs + beef, and just beef (maybe on a salad). Most will get frozen, and I don't have to freak out about cooking it by the sell-by date.

AND it keeps me busy and helps keep away the depression.

Cook night and the extra lithium did the trick. Yay!

The pictures aren't working today. Bummer.

I lost 1/4 inch off my waist. Yay! Only 2.25 inches to my size goal. Huh. I wonder, if I get to my size goal before I get to my weight goal, will I stop? Probably not, but I think they'll run pretty concurrent.

Well, Ron woke me up and said he wanted me to spend some money on myself. If I had $, how would I spend it? He found it hysterical that it took me ages to answer. Then he told me later in the day he wished he could give me a thousand. I told him I wouldn't know what do do with it if I had it.

At any rate, he planned our Burger King trip so I'd have time to run over to Hobby Lobby (and Staples) with a little cash. Boy, I had fun, I bought some really cute buttons (for shawls and tote bags), and some index card organizer things. I want to put my knitting patterns on the cards, then file them in my tote bag. The card holders are crush proof.

I need to finish Mom's last glove and then they're ready to go. Yay!

Our ride was over an hour late today, and then the client on board was a big-time complainer. She has told us she makes over $40K a year. She works full time. She lives in a big fancy house in a big-fancy subdivision. She can't drive due to her disability. She has a boyfreind who can drive, so why take Metrolift? Why not take a cab? I don't know. It was very unpleasant listening to her complain.

Then, after we dropped her, we drove literally 15 miles AWAY from work (we were only about 3 miles away to start with) and picked up an even BIGGER complainer, in both senses of the word . She was yelling at me, saying if I hadn't been late coming out of my home (wrong, Ron is the slow one but we were still on the van 2 minutes after it pulled up) she wouldn't be late to her appointment. Then she wanted a straight trip to her destination, we'd "Just have to wait because she had business." She let slip later it was some type of welfare thing.

I have no problems with welfare, I was on Medicaid for a few years, but I do resent ugly attitudes and trying to make us later too. I really resent the whole "I'm better than you" and racism, as well. It was clear she was a racist.

I told her "We're next because we also waited an hour for our ride, we've been riding for an hour, we went out of our way to pick YOU up, and we have "business" too." She started screaming at me saying she wasn't talking to me (then why was she looking straight at me?).

I turned up my MP3 player, set it for only Skillet, and turned it up LOUD. I could see her mouth moving and hear an annoying voice, but not any words. She looked at me a couple times and said things but figured out I wasn't playing. She asked me a few questions later and I didn't answer. Ron did. He asked me to do it earlier, next time. I will. Any complaining, I'm going to turn up the Skillet.

Ugh. We were supposed to have 2 hours, but it would have only been 30 minutes. I had to call in an order. No way.

Ron called and fixed the trip so we had about 2.5 hours. I had enough time to do my work, help him, and get out of there in time to get our ride to Burger King. I got really hungry partway into my work and heated up one of my egg-cheese-sausage things. We got a straight trip this time.

After we got dropped off I realized I wasn't really hungry. I just got Ron his food, took the money, and ran.

I had lots of fun, then came back. Our pickup was going to be very bad, and we have to get up at 2 AM tomorrow, so Ron just called a cab. $15 well spent. It's also good, IMO, for local cab drivers to know that the "B's" are good trips.

We came home and I took a nap with Bubba. I have black cat hair all over my sheets, I need to wash them.

I had hoped to get some of the stuff I ordered but no joy yet. Oh, well, it'll come.
