Kacee's Long and Winding Road

I have been a lurker/occasional poster here for several years. And yes, for several years I have been trying to lose 30-40 pounds. I lost 30 pounds on Atkins back in 2001, then it gradually came back on. Since then, I've never been able to lose more than 10 pounds at a time. The problem, it seems, is me. I'm the only one who can do this, the only one who can motivate me. So this is it - I think I'm ready. I've updated my stats, and started this journal in an attempt to be accountable to the only one who matters - me!!

A little bit about me –

I’m forty nine years old, married with three grown sons. DH is a minister, and I am a social worker in a senior living high rise. Both of our occupations pose unique eating challenges. There are a lot of meals at church and at work. I know that I can always prepare my own food, but there is a whole emotional minefield when you start refusing food others have prepared, for whatever reasons.
I am an emotional eater. Sweet, salty and starchy carbs are a huge trigger for me. I find that it’s really better for me to avoid All temptations – I can’t do “just a taste”.
Exercise is also key to keeping me on track. I broke my neck in an accident many years ago, and exercise has been instrumental in maintaining my mobility.
The question I ask myself is – why now? Because if I don’t get this final 30 off once and for all this time, I don’t think I ever will. I see myself slowly inching up and up and up. My family has a history of heart problems and diabetes. I don’t want to go down that road.
So here I am - fat, unhappy, dissatisfied. BUT, finally motivated to do something about it!!

So today is the first day of June - time for a new start, new beginnings. Gonna post my menu for today

B - sausage cheese crustless quiche
S - PB toast on LC bread
L - stir-fry
D - grilled seafood/salad

Next week is going to be a real challenge. DH and I are taking 26 high schoolers to their youth/church retreat at Montreat, NC. I'm cooking, so I will have some control, I hope. But no chance for any formalized exercise. I'm hoping to use this time as a chance to jump-start with a five pound loss. We'll see.

Candy - good to see you. Hope you're feeling better, sweetie.

I hope you will have fun on the retreat. I always enjoyed those. I doubt you can feed the entire group LC, but hey you should be able to include at least one item for you in the menu, then make you a salad or something ?
Will you have internet access next week ?

I enjoy these retreats, too. My boys are grown (mostly), so it gives me a chance to be around teenagers. It also gives DH and me a chance to worship together. You'd think after being married to a minister for 27 years, I'd be used to sitting in a pew without him!! As far as food goes, I'll be doing the shopping, too, so that should be pretty good.

I almost forgot that I'd started this journal last month. As usual, I thought I could make it on my own - NOT. I do need to journal and be accountable every day.
I guess the good thing is that in the past month I've re-started my exercise. I'm back in the pool at the gym with water aerobics, and I've rediscovered Callan and Ttapp.
And, I've got inspiration. I'm going to France in September, for a wedding in Paris. The thought of all those skinny french women HAS to kick me into gear.
Candy, thanks for checking in. I've been reading your journal - how's Hannah?
Jaimie - where is your husband starting seminary?

Well, the good news is that I didn't eat pasta for dinner (we went to an Italian restaurant); nor did I have a piece of the walnut cream cheese cake in the fridge!! But I did have a couple of apple bites.
DH and I leave today to go to middle-school camp thru Saturday. Maybe that will break my snack habit. Gotta do something. DS#2&3 are counselors at this camp, and want me to try the high ropes course. Maybe!!

Hope you have fun at camp. It's great to see you posting in your journal again. Hannah is OK right now, we just take it day by day. I am sorry I have been in here that much. I barely got online last week, and I am not sure it will get any better. I do think of you often and did want to stop in and tell you that and say Hello.

Finally, a chance to catch up. I've had this huge finance seminar for the past two days for my residents here; two DSs are home before going back to school, and I went to my mom's for dinner. The good news - I'M ON PLAN. Even exercised for the last three days. Won't weigh til Friday. Talked to DS#1 today - he's in Monte Carlo. He helped me firm up the dates and make our reservations for the flight to Paris in September. Game on - I'm committed to being at least in the 160's by then!!

Hi Kacee. Sounds like things are going well for you. That's awesome that you get to go to Paris, and I have no doubt you can be in the 160's. Keep up the good work.

Thanks, Candy. I know how lucky we are to be going, . . . but. There are so many places I'd rather go, since we've been to France before. But that is where DS#3 is right now, so if we want to see him, we have to go.
As for the diet, I'm eating really well, I think. Didn't get as much exercise in last week, but will do better this week. Was down to 172# on Saturday and Sunday (started again last week 07/29 at 183#), then 176# this AM. Did I say that I hate the scale? Tonight is DH's turn to cook and he wants grilled hot dogs, so I'm already chugging water.
