First day back at work. I made it through the whole day and even walked over to Macy's for salad bar. That was a long walk! Totally wore my a$$ out.

Pupcake and I had to take our duvet to the laundromat so we headed over to KFC for dinner.

Hey Sandy - slowly, but surely I think. I might have overdone the past few days. I worked at home today, but I'm thinking I'm taking a personal day - didn't get much done.

Every day will get better. Yay yes?

It has been a little harder than I thought it would be.

Jaimie - I can really see why you are reticent to have the second surgery. How is your knee without the surgery? You mentioned you taught class the other night. Are you able to walk without limping?

No wonder you are thinking long and hard about your surgery. How long will you be off from work?

I think you have a journal! I need to find it . . .

Hi Daisy,

I will have the surgery on Thursday, I have a sick day for Friday, then it's school vacation, so I have 10 straight days off...so I will be ready to go back to work on the 23rd no problem...I hope!

I am pretty mobile, but if I do any twisting...which is such a big part of dance...any turn on one foot will tweak my knee...then I have pain and swelling. I could probably walk miles and have no problem, but the twisting...not so good.

Thanks for finding me here, it was sweet to see you in my journal

Hugs

Mine hurts when I twist as well, but I do not think I could walk for miles. Pupcake and I ran errands yesterday and I was exhausted when we got home.

I am really out of shape right now though! It's really terrible.

I see my ortho doc on Thursday and I will be asking about rehab. At home or at the clinic - I don't care. I just want to start getting strong.

Anyone watch the Grammys last night? Wow! I love music so much. Lots of good music to watch last night. I've been in love with Adele for months and loved her performance.

I hadn't heard the Alison Krause and Jimmy Page stuff before though. Where have I been? She is a sweet little thing isn't she? Seems so shy and unassuming. Loved Estelle as well!

And Al Green! Can he rip up a room or what? Whooha! Loved it.

Hi Daisy,

I have the Grammys downloaded and will hopefully watch it tonight!

Physio seems like a given for your knee. Don't be too hard on yourself about being out of shape, you just had surgery! Has it even been a whole week? Thought I was the most impatient person in the world, but you may be my rival for the title

Terrific Tuesday sweets!

You are NOT a baby...the surgery recovery has NOT been what I expected at all!!

I got pics of my knee during the surgery from my Doc yesterday...pretty amazing actually.

Gearing up for the left knee on Thursday...

Thanks for checking up on me in my journal, it's nice to have you there!

Fri - off
Sat or Sun - free weights; upper bod and alternately from there

My company sent an e-mail saying layoffs are coming, but they do not know how many or when. Oye vey! That's pressure. Just do it people!

I decided to take advantage of the timeoff even though I don't know if I'm to be one of the people let go. I feel I need it right now so I put in a request to take the next (not counting tomorrow) six Fridays off. I can dig it!

Daisy

You could always chug a protein shake as a snack throughout the day to bump your protein up.

I just ordered another round of Champion Whey Cookies n Cream from Netrition. Great price and very tasty.

Hi Daisy,
When do you meet the surgeon? Hope it goes well. Fridays off sounds like a plan, hope they figure it out soon, everyone must be feeling the stress.

That is a very good idea. And you just reminded me of a Vanessa recipe that is made with whey protein. Thanks Twyla!

The stress is palpable. Everyone is scurrying around. The not knowing when is really hard! I know we're (the company) REALLY in trouble. I have to admit I vacillate every day between joy and fear. The other hard thing is trying to NOT read into every thing that happens during the work day. Any sideways glance is fodder for my brain to go off! Oh I wish I could make it STFU. Ha!

My visit with the surgeon was yesterday. He said that it looked pretty good, but is still swollen and I cannot workout, lower body, until that swelling is gone. Right now the knee won't go totally into position. When it does then I have the green light to begin non-jarring cardio of which my Nordic Track will be PERFECT. I am bummed about not being able to hit it just yet. He also said the meniscus tear was much worse than the MRI had showed. So he repaired that and shaved down some rough edges where the arthritis was aggravating.

This, strangely enough, was good news to me. He had initially said he didn't feel the tear was the thing effecting me, but the arthritis. So what he found was the exact opposite of what he thought which translates into a much better recovery rate that the 33 percent he had originally told me. Yay!

I just knew the way that knee was feeling couldn't have been totally from arthritis. Why would that come on so suddenly yes?

He also said weight loss would help me tremendously. Of course doc! And get this guys - he said watching my sugar was "hocus pocus" thinking. That sugar does not effect inflammation. Can you even believe this coming out of a doctor's mouth? I chose not to argue with him since he is not a nuritionist, but an ortho surgeon, but come on dude! You really have to shake your head in disbelief.

I'm thinking I can start my upper body weights and start some of the Callanetic DVD that focuses on other parts of the body and skip anything that involves the knee. Tomorrow morning I can begin.

He also said to keep icing the knee. I haven't been doing that at all! Sheesh.

You know, I forgot to ask about walking George, but I'm betting that couldn't be good. I asked DD1 to come with me to a "Rowdy Dog" play group on Sunday. I think George would have a blast. He needs to get out of the house!

Pupcake and I went to Fudruckers after my doctor appointment last night. Actually it was more like late lunch/early dinner kind of thing. We had the place to ourselves! Ate leisurely at a big round booth while reading the paper to each other. It was very relaxing. It was nice to force Pupcake into relaxing during this busy time for him. I told him if I get laid off I can totally be his assistant and do the office duties that take up unnecessary time - like data entry, paper shredding, billing, etc.

Can you believe I had never been to a Fudruckers before? It was fun and my burger sans bun was so delicious! I couldn't resist some of those fresh fries though. Man they are good and cooked from fresh potatoes!

I am weighing in on Saturday. I have not weighed in since my surgery. Ick!

Just popping by to say hi. Am catching up with your journal (slowly but surely!!) Hope the weigh in goes the way you want it to. Be easy on ourself tho - you have just had surgery! You have kept your food in check by the look of things.
Keep well, keep positive.

Hi Daisy,

Good news about the knee!! I hadn't heard sugar and inflammation are connected, but it does make sense. I don't think docs get much nutrition training and if they did it's all stuff that we as LCers know to be wrong.

Is George destroying your house? A rowdy dog playdate sounds fun.
Happy Friday!

It's true that docs don't know much about nutrition. Amazing to dismiss it so summarily; really made me roll my eyes.

George really WANTS to destroy the house. I seriously feel bad! I want to ask Pupcake to bring my treadmill back from his sis' house (I gave it to her a while ago) and train George to walk on it ala Cesar Milan.

He's a good boy though. Mostly not destroying. It's Calvin that is doing the destroying around here lately! Bad Kitty!

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

I am waiting for my flowers.

Seriously, I am waiting. I need to jump in the shower, but I'm afraid I'll miss the doorbell or have to answer it in a robe.

I want to get out today and run errands. Can you guys believe I haven't driven my Ruby (Jeep Wrangler) for over two weeks??!! I'm a bit scared. But I'd like to get to Aldi's, Target, Cub, maybe browse in a boutique for a bit. I just need to give it a try right? The knee should be able to handle it.

Maybe you train George on the Nordic Track? I await your video on YouTube!

Can you bend your knee? How was driving?

Wouldn't that be a hoot to see George on the Nordic Track?

I did drive yesterday. It didn't bother the knee at all. Shopping did though.

It hurt earlier today so I watched a movie and iced it. Much better right now.

I just found this in an exercise forum:

I have a bad knee too. When I was in PT the only cardio they'd let me do was exercise bike and walking (slowly!) up and down stairs. My workouts were really heavy on quad strengthening too. Get ankle weights and do leg-lifts. Lay on your back first and lift up, then each side and do both legs, then your stomach and lift your legs backwards. That was all part of my PT routine. If you have a balance ball you can do what my therapist called "triple threats" too. You start by laying on your back on the floor with your legs straight and your heels resting on the top of the ball. Use your ab muscles to pull your butt off the floor and make a straight line with your body (like a pelvic lift only your feet are on the ball, not the floor). Then slowly bend your knees and roll the ball toward you until your heels are near your butt. Then use your abs and legs to push up and do another pelvic lift with your feet on top of the ball. Do the whole sequence backwards to return to the starting position. It's really hard to explain, but maybe look it up online and see if you can find diagrams? I swear if you can make it through 20 of these a day (I still can't) you'll have the best butt in the universe and strong knees to boot. Be warned though: sore hamstrings the next day are a certainty.

I'm trying to visualize this.
