Shirl's Journey To Complete Healing and Self Discovery

Wow, it has taken a lot of courage to begin a journal. With tears in my eyes, I begin this journal to document my weight loss and rediscover the girl in the mirror. I often gaze at my reflection in the mirror only to see a stranger looking back. I see pictures of myself at 140 pounds, but feel detached, deep down longing to be that girl again.

How did this happen? Well, the short answer is that I chose to medicate myself with food during those times of turmoil, stress, unhapiness, loneliness, and spiritual decay.

Back in 1995 I weighed 155 pounds. I tried atkins and successfully loss 25 pounds. Gave birth to my daughter in 1998 and weighed about 198. Lost all the weight due to atkins and a little help from my plastic surgeon.

At that time I weighed 140. Moved to Henderson, Nevada went through horrible marital problems and gained 30 plus pounds. Moved back to Los Angeles in 2003 and since then I've put on 30 more pounds. So now I sit her weighing 200 pounds. Never ever thought I'd weigh this much.

I currently manage a women's clothing boutique her in Los Angeles on Melrose. The clothing is gorgeous. We carry House of Dereon, Laundry, Marissa K, Kimora Lee Simmons exclusive line and many other high end designer labels. The horrible thing is that I can't wear any of it. I sit for 8 hours a day watching absolutely gorgeous women try on outfits longing deep down to be in their shoes. I joke a lot about my weight, but deep down I'm saddened. I realize that I'm out of control and need help.

This is my first step to victory in my life. Not just in my weight loss, but in many other areas.

You can do it Shirl. You've got the eating part down pat with the experience you've had in the past, but now you've got to replace those destructive habits with healthy ones. You can do it! I KNOW you can.

I'm definitely informed/knowledgeable about the eating part of atkins, but I haven't got a grip on my emotional eating. I'll do well for approx. 2 weeks, lose 12-17 pounds and something would happen that sends me in a tail spin of erratic eating.

Today is a day of preparation and tomorrow is my offical start date or the beginning of reuniting with me. LOL

One thing I've noticed is that I'll lose and get down to 189 then something just happens to make me sabotage. Everytime I see that number, I believe fear grips me stating that I won't lose past that point, what's the use of trying to lose more?????

Oh my goodness! Your little girl looks just like you!

I so know what you mean about sabotaging yourself when you see a specific number on the scale. May I make a suggestion? I too, had a weight number that freaked me out. In order for me to get past it, I had to put my scale in my closet, buried really good so that it wasn't convenient for me to get at. After several weeks of not weighing, I finally brought it out and found that I was below that weight. I had no more problems after that for a while . . .

If you ever need any help with the emotional eating stuff, please let me know. I've been to a lot of "group therapy sessions" that dealt with such things. Perhaps I could be of some help?

Thank you Dusk. You know what, I've always thought Talayah looked like her father, but after viewing them side by side, she looks a lot like me. The picture is so fuzzy. We took the photo with my camera phone. LOL

That's an awesome idea about hiding my scale when I get to the 180's. I will definitely give it a try on those days where I feel hopeless or doubt this way of eating.

She must have her father's chin because you don't have a chin like that. I DO, but you don't. Hmmm . . . are you sure she's not MY daughter?

My whole family has the same chin.

LOL, yes she has her fathers chin. She also has his long legs, arms, and torso. He's 6 feet tall and 185 pounds. This guy eats whatever he wants and doesn't gain a pound. Here's some other photos of her. As you can tell, she's the love of my life and my 15 year old son Coty.

She's 4 years old here and I was approx 180 pounds. This was taken in Long Beach at the Aquarium of the Pacific.

These are some recent photos of her at 7 years old.

You never know, she could be yours. LOL She has almond shaped eyes like my mother. I love her smile, the shape of her lips and her smooth flawless complexion. I'm currently wearing clear braces, hopefully my smile will look like hers in the end. LOL

Off to a good start today. Boy it's hot today. It's only 11:36 a.m. and the temperatures already at 85 degrees.

Breakfast: 3 strips of bacon
2 cups of coffee with heavy whipping cream
1 boiled egg
1 sugar free red bull

Lunch: 2 pieces of leftover El Pollo Loco Chicken (love that stuff)
2 boiled eggs

Need to increase my water intake.

Went to wal-mart to buy the new sugarfree white raspberry tea but they were out. That sucks

Hey...i totally feel you on wearing all those cute clothes. Emotional eating is so damaging, and we all do it. It seems like we eat better when we are happy. I know I do. Girl, when I first moved here to WI, I would leave my family at home tell my husband I was going to the store and I would drive thru McDonald's or White Castle or whatever. I would ride around until whatever I bought was gone. Sad...it was just depression. Moving here from FL in the dead of winter. Snow, cold, trees had no leaves and it was cloudy everyday. Depressing I tell ya! I am learning to not get like that anymore...I guess I am getting used to living here. Stay with it and it will happen for you!!

BTW, your kids are such cuties!!!

and if it's any consolation..you do not look like you weigh 200lbs!

Thank you so much for saying I don't look 200. Actually, many of my customers say the same thing. Of course they're all 110-125 and think they're fat. LOL

When I took the photo with Mario, he put his hand on my waist. I was so embarrassed. Didn't want him to feel any of my fat rolls.

Yeppers, I weighed in this morning and the scale said 199.5. Lordy, Lordy. It must be all those soul food dinners after church on Sunday.

Gotta take these braids out. They've grown out at least an inch in less than 2 months. It's the biotin. LOL

I woke up this morning and the scale said "197." Uh huh!!!!
I know it's water weight but I'll take it.

Guess who came in the boutique yesterday. Chelsea, one of the girls that competed to become the next P*ssy Cat Doll. She was so cute, but very tiny. She was probably 5'4" and very curvy. I was standing behind the counter tagging some new clothes. I looked up, saw her looking at some dresses and saw those bangs. I was like "she looks familiar" then it hit me. She was very friendly.

On melrose, I never know who I'll see. 2 weeks ago Mario was in the store shopping for girlfried. I've also met, Katherine McPhee, Blu Cantrell, Eve, Ciara, Kenya (one of hugh's girlfriends) and Eric Bennet. I love my job. LOL

It's made by "Juicy Couture." We carry Juicy and Tiffany's.

No, I don't bug them for autographs. I just treat them like I would any other customer that comes in the store. Most of them are very humble and don't want us to make a huge fuss.

This photo of Mario was taken by cellphone, so it's fuzzy. His hair looked like black satin and his skin was so flawless/smooth. He was actually quite cute. We were playing LLoyd's cd and he started dancing for us. The girls went crazy. There were girls in the dressing rooms peeking out and screaming. Just acting up. LOL

Reverend Runs youngest daughter and the young boy that plays on My wife and kids as Wayan's son came in about a month ago. I had no idea who she was until the owner of the boutique told me.

Her and her sister has a shoe line called "Pastries." They're scheduled to come to the store and show us their new clothing line. I'll get pictures and show you.

It's burning up here in Los Angeles. It feels like its at least 90 degree in my house. Went in to work to price and hang out new merchandise from BCBG and KLS. Their clothes are quite cute. Too bad I can't fit into any of it. LOL Didn't have breakfast, I know that's not good.

Lunch: In and Out double double w/cheese protein style and a Diet coke It was delicious.

Chelsea, one of the girls that competed to become the next P*ssy Cat Doll. She was so cute, but very tiny. She was probably 5'4" and very curvy. I was standing behind the counter tagging some new clothes. I looked up, saw her looking at some dresses and saw those bangs. I was like "she looks familiar" then it hit me. She was very friendly. On melrose, I never know who I'll see. 2 weeks ago Mario was in the store shopping for girlfried. I've also met, Katherine McPhee, Blu Cantrell, Eve, Ciara, Kenya (one of hugh's girlfriends) and Eric Bennet. I love my job. LOL

We carry Juicy and Tiffany's. No, I don't bug them for autographs. I just treat them like I would any other customer that comes in the store. Most of them are very humble and don't want us to make a huge fuss. This photo of Mario was taken by cellphone, so it's fuzzy. His hair looked like black satin and his skin was so flawless/smooth. He was actually quite cute. We were playing LLoyd's cd and he started dancing for us. The girls went crazy. There were girls in the dressing rooms peeking out and screaming. Just acting up. LOL Reverend Runs youngest daughter and the young boy that plays on My wife and kids as Wayan's son came in about a month ago. I had no idea who she was until the owner of the boutique told me. Her and her sister has a shoe line called "Pastries." They're scheduled to come to the store and show us their new clothing line. I'll get pictures and show you.

It feels like its at least 90 degree in my house. Went in to work to price and hang out new merchandise from BCBG and KLS. Their clothes are quite cute. Too bad I can't fit into any of it. LOL Didn't have breakfast, I know that's not good. Lunch: In and Out double double w/cheese protein style and a Diet coke It was delicious.
