Second Time Around - Rebecca's Journal
I'm making a committment to journaling, even if I do screw up - usually I journal when I'm doing great but if I mess up - I don't want anyone to know so I just don't post anymore. But that is all changing!
I'm Rebecca, 33, I'm losing the baby weight - my daughter, Anna, is 10 months old! My husband is active duty Army and currently deployed to the middle east for a YEAR! He has been gone for about 6 weeks now! I started back on strict low carb - M/E on Feb 12th and to date have lost (wow, a month already) 15.2 lbs! I had already lost 5 before I came to the board though and put an official start date so in 6 weeks the total is actually 20.2. I am determined to lose 10 lbs per month and so far have exceeded that goal. My goal for the last day of March is to be 165 or less and right now I'm 169.8, however, I'm in a stall - today is day 4 of no cheating and no losing! I started going to the gym last night and I did 20 minutes on the treadmill and 20 minutes of lifting - my workout was limited because it was my daughter's first time in the gym daycare and 40 minutes was all she could handle the first time. I'm sure it will get better as she adjusts to the new people/new environment. I successfully lost 75+ pounds before with 50 of that being from eating less/moving more and then 26 lbs in 2 months doing M/E - low carb. Then I got pregnant and all my bad habits came back full force! I gained about 65 lbs while pregnant and delivered my daughter weighing in at 205!!!! I'm now 169.8 and I am so thrilled! I am still breastfeeding and I really thought restricting carbs would affect my milk supply but so far we are not nursing any less and my daughter is thriving! My plan for the day: B: 3 scrambled eggs - 2 slices bacon L: egg salad wrapped in turkey slices D: Hamburger patties and 1 fried egg Workout tonight - chest, biceps, triceps - 20 minutes cardio first. If my daughter is still okay in the nursery I will do another 20 minutes after my strength training. My official weigh in day is on Thursdays so hopefully I see 168 by then - it would make my week!

Yes
he most certainly will! My eating was great yesterday but I didn't make it to the gym - had to take my car to the shop and then take a taxi cab home with the baby, which is fine, just took longer than I expected. I woke up to a tiny little loss but I'll take it. 169.2 Almost into 168.... Hopefully tomorrow will be my day and the whoosh fairy will bring me a nice loss since it is my official weigh in day! Write more later! |

Yesterday was a good eating day for me...
B: 3 scrambled eggs and 2 slices bacon (shared with my daughter) L: 4 ounces ground beef w/ 4 asparagus spears and about 2 ounces of roasted red pepper (yummo) D: 2 hard boiled eggs Exercise: 20 minutes elliptical (would have been longer but my daughter was getting too upset in the kids klub - she is still adjusting to going in there) I am still stalled out at 169.2 - however, I just realized that TOM is due any minute now really - started having some cramping this morning so duh, maybe that is what is going on! Hopefully it gets here soon so it can get overwith and take a couple pounds on the way out! |

Rebecca - you are doing great!!! Does your DH know you are losing??? He will sure be surprised the next time he sees you
You said you are breastfeeding, you are not in ketosis right? I have heard that is not good for the baby. Just a thought too, you may want to eat a little bit more at dinner that may help you lose more too. It looks like you are barely eating enough to keep a bird alive Try to eat a bit more and see if that helps speed the loss up![]() |

LOL - I typically eat more at dinner but went to the gym and worked out, got home, was beat, wasn't even hungry and barely got those eggs down actually.
My daughter is almost 11 months and is still nursing - actually there are no scientific facts to show that being in ketosis is harmful to my baby. My family doc and pedi are totally supportive of me doing atkins/being in ketosis and still nursing my child. Since she is almost a year - she is on 3 solids per day and 1-2 snacks and only nursing 4-5 times in a 24 hour period. Thanks for your concern ![]() Oh and my husband does not I'm working on losing - he thinks I've lost like 5 lbs! He will be so floored when he sees me in July! |

Breastfeeding and Ketosis
Thought I would post this in case anyone else is worried about the effects of ketosis on my nursling...
Atkins Diet and Breastfeeding Q: Hello, I was wondering why you can't breast feed while doing the Atkins diet. Thanks A: There are two major reasons to be concerned about going on any diet while breastfeeding, especially nursing a newborn: 1. Will your baby have all necessary nutrients on ANY restrictive diet? 2. Will your body sustain the restrictions? Specifically on Atkins diet, there are two additional concerns: 1. being dehydrated and straining your kidneys; 2. getting ketone bodies in your milk and to your baby. It's easy to protect yourself from dehydration: drink plenty of water and reduce your sodium intake. As to the ketones, There's no reason to be worried. Breast milk, with its high-fat, low-carb content, is ketogenic for the baby NATURALLY. Before your baby was born, ketones were natural food for her or him. As soon as your baby starts suckling, he or she actively maintains the state of ketosis: "During late gestation, free fatty acids are used for ketogenesis by the mother, and ketone bodies are used as fuels by the fetus. During the perinatal period an active ketonemia develops, which is maintained in the suckling newborn." -- Diabetes Metab Res Rev. 2000 May-Jun;16(3):202-10 I think the best answer is that given by Dr. Atkins himself. During his interview to Power Surge in AOL "Odeon" Auditorium, the first question was: Is your diet safe to use while breastfeeding a newborn? Dr. Robert Atkins: The diet is quite safe for breastfeeding; however, weight loss will be painfully slow because of the hormones involved in supporting breastfeeding. There's anecdotal evidence that new mothers successfully do Atkins with one precaution: 1. waiting until the baby can eat solid food plus to the breast milk. Resources found that on a diet and body website. Not sure if I can post a link but if anyone would like the link to reference please message me! |

Well, today is day 1 again for me after a weekend cheat - I had been stalled at 169.2 for over a week - I ended up eating just whatever over the weekend and this morning I weighed 173. That cheat was after 6 weeks of being cheat free so I'm not beating myself up over it. Just have to go really strict and get this bloating gone then get right back on plan. So I'm looking towards 3 days of super strict meat and eggs. I really think I can still meet my goal of 165 by the end of the month.
I also did a killer leg workout on saturday - my legs still feel like jello - i use to be a pretty good at doing weighted squats but after not doing any for close to 2 years - I did 3 pyramid sets and my highest weight was 165 and oh my goodness do I feel it!!!! Yesterday, I could barely walk! Yes, I overdid it a bit hahaha - So some of that weight I gained is from super swollen leg and glute muslces!Check back tomorrow - I'm not officially claiming this water weight gain so not changing my stats or siggy! |

I am down to 170 this am after a whole weekend of cheating, I am happy to be less than a pound away from siggy and back on my way to 165, my end of March goal - which I really think I will make!
yesterday was: B: shake L: 6 ounces chicken S: 1 hb egg D: 8 ounces salmon water: 3x46 ounces exercise: none - had to go get groceries after work and then it was too close to daycare closing at the gym! My plan looks about the same for today except I will probably have chicken for dinner and eggs for lunch instead. I would so love to be back to siggy tomorrow morning! I am so close now! Then on my way to 165! |
