The Soccer Mom's Saga

Here's my brief (not!!) bio.

Had my second baby May 2002. I weighed a little over 200lbs. By October I had dieted down to a sleek 198. So, I read the Atkins book and joined a gym. At the time I wore sizes 16 or 18 (according to the brand). My goal was to get down to a size 12.
The whole time I was dieting and working out, I never bought new clothes. One day in class my students finally told me that all the clothes I was wearing were too big. That was around Spring Break. So I went shopping and bought clothes that were size 10. Anyway to shorten the story they were too big also because I had gotten down to a size 6!!!
I'm from the South and we like 'em thick around here. Family members with the exception of dh kept saying that I was too thin. So stupidly, I began to relax a little.
Then like most moms, life got in my way. My oldest began playing soccer and softball, so I was always running off to practice and exercise took a back seat to everything and fast food was easy to grab and go. Dh is a doll and helps out, but he is in school so practices are left up to me. So basically, I slipped up. Now my baby is playing sports too, but I refuse to be the fat soccer mom on the sidelines.
So I have decided to use my summer break to start getting back into shape. Currently I weigh 168 lbs. My goal is to get down to 135 lbs. I'll try to journal as much as I can. I hope this will help to keep me accountable. I'd at least like to be 10 lbs. slimmer when school starts in August. I'd like to be at my goal weight by Thanksgiving when I see the family again.

LOL - so true. I got down to 141 a few summers ago when I lived in Florida & a bunch of people told me I was skinny. Now I'm within 2 lbs of that weight & I have not once heard that comment living up north.

to the journals!

Got up early yesterday and went spinning and did a little upper body weight training. In the afternoon, I went to the lake with the family. I ate well up until late last night when I was helping dh put together his powerpoint presentation for class. My menu was as follows:
B: 2 boiled eggs
L: chicken (2 pieces)
D: 2 low carb tortilla wraps ( We were at the lake and I packed sandwiches for everyone)
Snack: strawberries
I'm trying to find this frying cheese that I've seen mentioned on the boards a couple of times. I can manage to calm my sweet tooth by drinking a diet soda or Crystal Light, but there are times when I need something salty and crunchy. TOM is here and I began to mindlessly much on chips while I was working with dh
Any suggestions? I still think I can meet my Fourth of July goal.

I have a confession to make. Not only am I a carb junkie, but I am also a scale junkie too. I have the usual TOM bloat and weight gain so the numbers look horrific. I have decided not to get on the scale until July 4th. Right now, I feel pretty bloppy. My pooch looks poochier, like an egg or something.
I did jog two miles this morning, so I feel slightly better.
I'll be back later to log the rest of my day.

Here are a couple of old posts talking about the frying cheese. Seems like a lot of people found it in the deli section of SuperWalMart.

mmmmm mmmm good!!!

Mexican Frying Cheese??!!! Oh Baby!

No WalMarts in the city so I make cheese crisps. http://users3.ev1.net/~fontlady/cheese_crisp.html They get salty with all the moisture cooked out of them.

Or if I'm craving something else salty, I'll microwave pepperoni slices & make dried chips out of them & dip into cream cheese. Just put some Hormel pepperoni slices onto a paper towel, cover with another paper towel & cook until they get hard. I haven't made them in a while, so I don't remember how long. I think a minute or a minute & 1/2?

Yesterday was okay. I jogged 2 miles and did a lower body workout at the gym. I ate well all day. I'm feeling pretty good. I feel slimmer, but I refuse to get on the scale until the Fourth. Dh and I are planning on participating in a race on July 3rd. It's a 5k race that raises money for St. Jude.
Dh is also planning on participating in a sprint triathlon next weekend. I'm not really a runner- I guess I'm a jogger. I go pretty slow. I have decided to join a running club. Eventually I will get faster. The thing about running is that I usually hate every step that I make, but it's getting better. My goal is to become an actual runner.

Well, I haven't eaten so well today. The family and I went to watch a triathlon. We ended up volunteering. The girls passed out water and dh and I took the chips off the athletes. Dh wanted some motivation since he is going to do one next weekend. After the race pizza was served. I got up late this morning and didn't think to try to carry some type of low carb snack for myself. I ate a couple of slices of pizza and drank a diet coke. - not so good- I don't feel bloated or anything, but I know I didn't need the pizza.

Today oldest dd had a softball game. We lost, but dd hit a homerun. Anyway my day went like this.
Monday morning spin class
upper body workout

B - breakfast wrap (sausage, egg, cheese, low carb tortilla), coffe
L - hot souse and water
D - chicken
I'm trying to get back in ketosis by Wednesday.
We went to TCBY after the game, but I didn't get anything. I have to work hard to try to meet my goal by the Fourth of July. I completed my membership information for the running club. Dh and I will run on the third and then I will attempt to complete the Road Race Series. There are two 5K's in July, two 5 milers in August, two 10K's in September, two 10 milers in October and two half marathons in November. I hope this training will help to get my butt in gear.

I envy you being able to run. I wish I could, but my knees are bad Good for you passing up TCBY!!!! Have you taken any pictures of yourself? I took some bikini pictures when I got back on board & then again a week or so ago with a 7 lb loss. They still aren't good, but I can see the changes happening. I'm sure with your exercising you'd probably see the changes even more quickly.

I took a couple of before pictures. I'll probably take new pictures on my designated goal dates.
Some days running feels pretty good. I tried to run this morning, but I just wasn't "feeling it". I only did 1.5 miles. I usually do two. This morning I was going to try to up my mileage a bit. It was so hot. I just need to bite the bullet and get used to it. It's going to be hot when the RRS starts in July. I'm a little afraid that I will come in last in all the races. I don't expect to set any records, but really all that matters is completion.

Woke up this morning feeling lighter. I refuse to get on the scale until the Fourth. If there is a drop in weight, I'd do something stupid to mess it up today. My brother in law came for a visit yesterday. My oldest dd had another softball game and afterwards he took the kids to Baskin Robbins. I love Baskin Robbins, but I didn't indulge in anything. I'm one of those people who likes warm, bready carbs. I like donuts, cakes, and cookies. Growing up, my mom served those brown and serve rolls everyday. The only thing that saved me then was the fact that I was so active.
Tomorrow I will attempt to increase my running mileage. Hopefully, the RRS will help me shed some of these pounds.

Today was dh last day of school. He has decided to take us all to the beach. I'm glad he suggested it cause I was trying to figure out what I would eat. I probably would have nibbled on something I didn't need. Anyway, he wants to get in a practice swim. I'll probably pick up a salad on the way home.

Had a nice time at the beach/lake yesterday. This time I stayed on plan. I guess wearing a bathing suit helped. The last time we went, I ended up nibbling on a lot of junk food. Anyhoo, we went out to eat afterwards and I had a nice salad, so I think I did pretty well.

Today went well. The girls and I spent the day at my mom's house because there was some work being done on the house. We left dh to deal with the construction work. I managed to stay on plan at her house (AKA High Carb Heaven).
Youngest dd had her final T-ball game tonight. I've been busy packing and trying to get everyone ready for our weekend trip. Saturday is Triathlon Day for dh. I'll have to work extra hard to stay on plan during the weekend. Staying in a hotel and eating out could easily be my downfall if I let it. One thing that is keeping me motivated is knowing that we will be going to a waterpark next week. That will be our family vacation. Although I don't necessarily have a bikini body, I want to look as good and as unbloated as I can.

hi from one soccer mom to another !
I can relate to the life on the go.
Sounds like you are doing great ! Are you back in ketosis yet?
Do you stay in it while eating the wraps?
Keep up the great work !

Him tm2chng,
Since I've attempted to start running, the wraps do not knock me out of ketosis. Lately I haven't been eating them everyday. Although they come in handy on days that everyone is eating sandwiches around here. (Like on game days!)

Well, we're leaving in about an hour. Tomorrow is dh's big race. I got up early and make some signs for the kids to hold. He's a little nervous and we want to support him. I'm keeping my fingers cross that the restaurants we visit are low carb friendly. I guess most are, it's just up to me. Anyway, we have plans to go to a waterpark on Tuesday so I will keep that in mind.

Made it home safely. I stayed on plan the best I could. On the way home we stopped at Taco Bell. We only had ten dollars between us. I stayed carb free all weekend so maybe the one chalupa won't hurt too bad.
Tomorrow dd has a double header and her season will be over. On Tuesday we'll be traveling to a water park so I stayed conscious of what I was eating because I will be wearing a swimsuit soon.
I"m a little tired right now. I've been in the truck all weekend long it seems. Will check back in tomorrow.

I've been having problems with the computer. My server went down just before we left on vacation and it's running pretty slow since I've been back. I'll have to call tech services today. I will tell about the vacation later.

Computer is up and running well. The vacation was fun but I did not stay on plan at all. I drank a cup of cleansing tea and will start on Stillman's tomorrow. I'm not confident about meeting my July 4th goal, but I can only blame myself.
My birthday is on the 10th and the first race of the series is on the 9th. I know I run better if I'm lighter. So right now I'm kicking myself. Those carbs really weren't worth it.
On the positive side, my oldest dd has been chosen to be on the all star team for 5/6 year olds. I was relieved that the season was over, but now I'm excited about going to practices again. In the fall both she and her sister will play soccer.

Today has gone well. I've stuck to eating on plan. DD had her first practice with her team today. She was a little nervous because she's used to the other girls. The good thing about it is the fact that they are all learning each other. The team consists of girls from different teams. While she and dh were at practice, my youngest dd and I cleaned up. I was planning on doing a light jog today, but I decided against it. I have a 5k run to participate in on Monday. I'm trying to be more active. Since the girls compete in sports I think it is only fitting that dh and I do something also. We both have a lot of overweight people in our family. We're trying to be role models. That's one reason why I have to lose this extra weight that I have gained. To my family, I am the perfect size, but I know better. By the time I see my family on Thanksgiving I will be my goal weight.

I feel better after doing the cleansing tea. Anyway the race dh and I are participating in is tonight. Maybe it will help me get in my groove. We usually take our children to the races, but dd has softball practice so they will go to grandma's house. She and my father will take her to practice. I was pleased when both dds have expressed some interest in running. The running club that I just joined has also added a chilren's club. It's something pretty new and I just mentioned it to dh. Well the girls heard me and said that they wanted to join. Anyway there is a four week running clinic for the different age groups that ends in a weekend race in October.
Just doing a quick check in- waiting on dh to get up so we can put up new blinds. Will check in later.

Well, completed the race. I see just how completely out of shape I am!!! I finished the race in about 36 minutes. I wanted to finish in about thirty. I have alot of excuses that I could give, but that's all they are----EXCUSES!!!! Tonight was a bit of a realilty check. I have got to do better. Dh finished in about 24 minutes. He said he would help me train. This was a kick in the butt that I definitely need.

Today is weigh in day. I didn't expect to meet my goal. I haven't been doing the things that I need to do. Putting my business on blast makes it all more real. Now the rest of my goal dates/weights will probably be off. I still hope to make it to 135 by Thanksgiving. Two pounds is a loss, although not the loss that I wanted.
