Food For Thought:

This is interesting! And to paraphrase W.C. Fields,
I don't drink water, because fish crap in it..

To my friends who enjoy a glass of wine... and those who don't.
As Ben Franklin said:
In wine there is wisdom,
in beer there is freedom,
in water there is bacteria..

In a number of carefully controlled trials, scientists have
demonstrated that if we drink
1 Liter of water each day, at the end of the year we would have absorbed more than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli, (E. coli) - bacteria found in feces. In other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of poop..

However, we do NOT run that risk when drinking wine & beer
(or tequila, rum, whiskey or other liquor) because alcohol has to go through a purification
process of boiling, filtering and/or fermenting.

Remember:

Water = Poop,

Wine = Health.

Therefore, it's better to drink wine and talk stupid, than to drink
water and be full of crap!

There is no need to thank me for this valuable information:
I'm doing it as a public service!

Kelley, Thank you for that Public Service Announcement.

BTW, I MUST wholeheartedly agree.
Wine = Health
Cheers!

WED FEB 24

Low carb day. Hunger much more controlled today. I've learned to GO WITH IT, the swings in hunger. I've learned quite a few lessons along the way. I'm in the LOOK-MA-NO-HANDS phase. Rewarding.

DOMS in calves (delayed!) from Sunday's run. They began gradually, and then peaked today for some reason. DOMS in biceps as well. Whatever

Made a taco meatloaf tonight out of ground venison. Lots of spices added to disguise the "wild" flavor. But nice and lean. Tasty.

Gotta go sing.

TOTALS

CALS...........1523
PROT..........178 (47%)
CARBS..........46 (11%)
FIBER...........10
FAT.............72 (42%)

My hubby would love that ground venison meatloaf...he loves venison. For me it is more of an acquired taste...not really a game-y food fan

Dani, just for the record, I'm not either. But I've learned some tricks to disguise the taste.

To make the taco meatloaf (if you're interested), here goes:

1.5 lbs ground venison
2 eggs
1 pkg taco seasoning mix
1 small/med onion, mined fine
1/4 c chopped jalepenos
generous shake of ground red pepper
garlic powder
chili powder

(the last 3 ingredients, just to your liking; for me, I add liberally)

Mix together. Place in loaf pan. Bake at 350 for 1 hr 15 mins.

Very good. Tastes better at room temp or warm than it does when it first comes out of the oven.

I actually want to pick up Spanish (south american) -- kinda embarrassing that I don't speak it, although I can understand it written and pick up some stuff in speech. My eldest dd takes it, so she can put 'ol Ma to shame! lol!

My actual real incentive is to be able to watch all those very emotional soaps on the Spanish channel!!!

Dani, you're welcome. BTW, my middle son is home for the weekend from college, and he tried it and LOVED it. I'll be making more this weekend. He's dropped a good bit of weight in this phase of his recomp and training (I've never seen him this lean to be such a "BIG" guy, and he's gobbling tons of lean protein).

Updating for Friday: My third LC day in a row. Carbs kept in the 50 or under range all day. Didn't track, but very controlled menu. Enjoyed my usual Friday Pinot Noir indulgence, but otherwise very focused nutrition.

Workout was 50 mins of Callanetics, which some extra quad emphasis.

Today will be a high carb day, LB training, and SS cardio.

Just saw a post in the Main Lobby where someone had offered up this link. I love reading about the role leptin plays, and to keep this handy, decided to post it in MY JOURNAL for easy reference when I am looking for it.

Rational Or Emotional? Your Brain On Food : NPR

We ended up getting around 6 inches from this most recent snowstorm that hit the eastcoast (wouldn't wanna be flying right now in or out of any northeastern airports -- PIA Infinito!) It's still snowing lightly. As sick as I am of snow, and oh-so-ready for spring, I can't argue with the beauty of freshly-fallen snow. I'm sitting here by my window in the living room, cup of coffee, quiet in the house, looking out at the falling snow, a thick, white blanket of beauty covering the otherwise drab and colorless landsape. I will focus on the "silver lining" as I wait for spring.

How many years have I been a member of LCF????? And I'm just now learning that there is a "request-to-be-your-friend" component in one's profile?

I never knew that. Until today, when I stumbled across such a request in my "junk-filter" folder of my email account (which, by the way, I seldom remember to check) with the subject line: LOW CARB FRIENDS.

I feel a little silly/embarrassed about this.

Oh, well. Learn something knew every day.

The average Joe (or Joann), when they listen to someone crucifying the English language, can "listen around" the butchered speech patterns and gain both from context and other cues a cursory translation or understanding of what the person is saying. Getting the gist of it enables one to listen and to communicate. Not so with a court reporter. The gist isn't good enough. We are charged with the responsibility of preserving a verbatim record of every word and/or syllable uttered from a person's mouth, and so we're trained to listen and decipher rather than just "getting the gist" enough to communicate. It is no easy task at times. Trying to preserve the record of a person's testimony who has an incredibly heavy accent is just short of painful torture. It makes our brains hurt.

But it's my job. It's what I do. I'll get through it. Life can't always be fun and games.

Oh, but on a rare sunny Saturday?
Oh that sucks!

Pup has a client from India and he insisted on taking us to dinner when he heard we had gotten married. He is a doctor as well and I could not understand him at ALL. Something about the cadence of that particular accent.

So I cannot imagine having to translate word for perfect word. {{hugs}}

Oh? You think so?

Well, you know what they say: Never say never.

Unquestionably, I have the necessary motivation from within. I am not daunted by the requisite discipline and demands on my body, diet, and mind; and my willpower is as strong as it‘s ever been. My one deficit, however? Time.

I’ll leave it at that.

Updating Sat Feb 27

Yesterday's high day was fantastic. Went very well. My LB training was intense and felt wonderful. Began with 10 mins light cardio warmup, then 50 mins LB, followed by 23 mins s/s cardio on the elliptical.

Enjoyed protein pancakes, half a bagel, cheerios, banana, blueberries, rice cakes, brown rice -- to name a few -- carb choices. Wanted to get my cals near maintenance also. Nailed that. All those carbs, and no bloat whatsoever throughout the day and evening. Just gobbled right up.

Got in a nice afternoon nap, then spent the rest of the day cooking, working on transcripts, house chores, etc. Not exciting, but enjoyable day.

Today I'll resume LC, today through Tuesday. Working an UB split today with some cardio.

TOTALS:

CALS........2214
PROT..........203.....37%
CARBS.........236.....39%
FIBER...........26
FAT..............51......21%

WORKOUTS: (As stated)

Last day of February......GOOD RIDDENCE! March HAS to be more promising. Of course it is. It ushers in SPRING!

Today was a great day. Had a wonderful hour-long nap early afternoon, just before my power walk. Loved getting outside. Not too cold. The air felt great. Good energy today. Hunger levels manageable and stable. LB DOMS today. Did some ham/quad stretches throughout the day to alleviate.

Made some yummy buffalo chicken dip today. I like dipping cucumber slices in it. That's what I had for dinner. Very yummy. Nabbed this recipe on New Year's Eve at a party, and I've been enjoying it ever since.

Today was mostly a cardio day, but squeezed in about 20+ minutes of delt work in between.

CALS: 1594
PROT........155.......40%
CARBS........53.......12%
FIBER.........15
FAT............89.......50%

WORKOUTS

36 MINS...CARDIO (POWER WALK) EARLY AFTERNOON
20+ MINS ... DELTS

I had a great workout today! I was able to find a good spotter and he helped me push heavier than i thought. I was able to use 40lb dumbbells today for my flat bench dumbbell presses! I only did 3 reps, but, it was my last set, and I really worked my muscles out hard. The only mistake I did this morning was get in a hurry and not get my pre workout nutrition... Lesson learned LOL I had intentions to do some cardio after I lifted but I was ready to fall over.
I am still working on my nutrition. Trying to get it just right to suit my needs right now.
EVeryone in here is doing such a great job. I was reading some yesterday trying to get to know some of you.
Great place for motivation! Heaven knows I need it sometimes!

Twyla,

Haven't visited in a while and was just catching up on your journal. I'm FINALLY doing a bit better! My doc started me on a different med and so far (only 3 days) it seems to really be helping me stay on track. The wonders of modern medicine. I think she will be titrating up over the next few weeks.

I'm so sorry to hear about your mother. These things are really tough. I am in the midst of a very heartwrenching situation myself. A close friend is in hospice and the end is very near. I spent Saturday night at the hospital and unless I receive a call this afternoon, I am on "duty" tonight to be with her. Her son and my son are in the same class at school...he will be 12 on Friday. I can say, though, that I have learned an immense amount through this experience and I HOPE that I will become a better mother, friend, wife, and person because of it.

I KNOW you will have the strength to help your mother through her difficult times. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers!

So bittersweet that, through the death of one; another's life is enlightened. But that is the natural order of the universe. Life and Death. Death and Life. Have you read Tuesday's with Morrie? I highly recommend it; esp for you, right now.

Oh, I'm so so sorry to hear this. You and your mom will be in my thoughts every day.

Keep us in the loop Twyla. We're all here for you as you are always here for us. You'll just never never know how much you have helped me over these years.

Hugs to you and your family.

Twyla- just to let you know you are in my thoughts and sending you strength right now. Take care of yourself and your mum and keep us informed.
Family is important right now so keep them around you. Strength and hope.
