Sitting here having my coffee,
ready to get kickin,
thinking how nice it would be
to have my coffee while watching the sunrise...
I'd have to find higher ground.
Go get in my car
and drive to the nearest hilltop,
throw down a blanket
and feast my eyes
on God's masterpiece.

Reflecting on life's lessons of the past, one that comes to mind is the movie "Bambi," when Thumper's mother gently reminds him, after saying something that perhaps didn't need to be said:

THUMPER: He doesn't walk very good, does he?
MRS. RABBIT: Thumper!
THUMPER: Yes, mama?
MRS. RABBIT: What did your father tell you this morning?
THUMPER: [clears throat] If you can't say something nice... don't say nothing at all.

That memory/lesson having been resurrected, I've chosen to say only what needs to be said in my journal.

Yesterday's workouts: 20 mins ab work; 25 mins cardio (Turbo Jam); 30 mins cardio intervals (elliptical)

Today will be a low carb day. My plan is to eat Atkins-style, higher fat, very low carbs, and protein. So far today, I've gotten in a 35-min run this morning (intervals) and one hour of Super Callanetics.

Tomorrow will be low or medium day in carbs. Probably medium. I want to get in a full body strength training workout tomorrow, and I'll need the extra fuel.

I've never read anything less than nice here.

Shouldn't one be able to say whatever one likes in one's own journal?

I'll butt out now

Have a great day! Your dedication and resolve (and sheer volume of exercise) continue to astound and inspire me.

Oops. Mercy, Gina. I guess I was being too vague in my attempts to remain "positive" in my journal, versus whining and complaining about my weaknesses these past few days.

They say that complaining actually ups stress hormones, and that distractions, particularly humor (bring on the laughter), will decrease cortisol and head off pity parties and self-sabotage.

So rather than complain about all that WASN'T going right in my life, I chose to comment on all that WAS right, things that I had done that were positive.

So I think I've been misunderstood by more than a few people. Sorry about that.

But that's very sweet of you to come to my defense. Wow. That ALONE lifted my spirits already.

Saturday JUL 25

I've had a great day, and it isn't over. I've decided to make this day count, spending the day doing things that make me happy, lift my mood, help me to refocus and get my head together.

My nutrtion has been dead on all day.

Spent an hour training both UB and LB, very intense, hard-at-it workout. Followed it up with 30 mins s/s cardio on the elliptical. After wringing myself out, catching my breath, had a protein shake and a half a banana, then headed to the jacuzzi for a nice relaxing bath, completely surrounded with candles and chill music. I soaked, read, and relaxed for ... a while! Didn't want to get out! (I may go back)

It's starting to storm now. I'm loving this. Summer rain and storms have a calming effect on me; seem to wash away the mental residue and promote renewal.

Yes...great day.

Having grilled chicken and spinach salad for dinner.

But for now....that jacuzzi is calling my name.....while it rains.

Exactly. GLORIOUS is a perfect word.

I returned to the jacuzzi and soaked a while longer, reflecting on my goals that lie ahead of me. I want to be realistic, but I don't want to set limits either. The more I read, both in research, articles, and profiles of other women who struggle with similar hurdles, I'm finding that 5-6 days of cardio, 30-45 mins, in addition to my weight training, is gonna be necessary to get the job done. I've not been putting in that much cardio time. It's worth a try.

The jacuzzi visit rejuvenated my spirit, alleviating that awful sense of guilt and disappointment that I'd been dealing with all week, which can (and has) stalled my progress. Pre-TOM hell has proven to tempt me into using food as an emotional salve, something that I cannot afford to do if I am going to stay committed and on track. I have got to find a better way to deal with HELL WEEK next month.

Played around with creativity with this shot...a full-body shot that showcases my legs. Ugh. I know I will never have slender legs. It's not in my genetics to have petite, slender, sexy legs. But I can have strong, lean, muscular legs, if I play my "nutrition & training cards" right. Got work to do, Twyla.

Plan to run tomorrow evening.

BROKEN EGGS

While unloading groceries yesterday afternoon, dropped the bag that held my carton of eggs, it fell flat, but right on the concrete in the garage. Not a good thing/sound. I quickly went inside, peeked in to see the damage, and taking them all out one by one, only 5 had broken. So I dumped those into a little container/w lid before they began to dry/stick to the sides of the egg carton, and rinsed the carton, placed the others back. I decided I'd make oatmeal pancakes with my broken eggs for today's run.

So this morning I fished out the yolks, and went ahead with 5 egg whites, although the recipe I was using calls for 4, and prepared them. Just had a little bite. OH. Y U M M Y!

• 4 egg whites
• 1/3 cup dry oatmeal
• 1 scoop whey protein powder
• 1/2 banana sliced (optional) *

* (I will use either 2 oz of banana or 2 oz of blackberries instead)

Those will be Meal No. 5 for me today. The oats will come in handy for the energy I'll need to run.

Broken eggs, but no harm done.

When life gives you broken eggs, make protein pancakes.

Hi Twyla!
I was back east for a visit, catching up w/ your journal. I'm totally with you on humor! I wonder about the PMS, I take 3 different supplements for hormones. Are you a supplement person?? I go to a doc who does applied kinesiology, much more subtle than blood testing. She's a chiropractor but I know other docs use this method. I wouldn't put up with that amount of hormonal chaos either! The proof of this work is my 2 younger kids, I had 2 miscarriages w/o supplements.

I remember a leg workout in Oxygen awhile back, the gal was trying to "break down that stubborn muscle" going to low weight, high rep workouts. My legs used to look more like yours and what bugged me is I couldn't wear jeans: they'd get tight above the knees!! I think your legs look great but I understand your wanting them sleeker.

Now that I'm home, it's back to LC! Let's do it!!

Hey, Laurie. Hope you had a nice visit "back east."

This mention of hormonal supplements has me curious. I can tell you that I've HAD IT with putting up with that crap every month. Some months, even though it's bad, it's conquerable. Other months, it's absolutely insane. It's as if I need an exorcist, and I'm not being funny. I'm not a nice person, my hunger and appetite goes out the roof, I cry at the drop of a hat, I scream and yell and b*tch at the drop of a hat, and I want to be left ALONE!!!!!! Now tell me, who wants to be around someone like that? I needed quarantined. The way they used to do people in biblical times who had leprosy, they put 'em on an island and left them there.

THis past week I tried everything I knew to do: L-glutamine, extra fish oil, upping fat, extra cardio -- NOTHING WORKED. I would eat, and an hour later I was hungry again. Carb cravings out the roof!

Just is nasty! But enuf of THAT....RAMBLING ABOUT IT IS JUST AS BAD.

But about the legs thing. Thanks. I know what you mean about getting clothes to fit. If I get them to fit in the thighs, they're too big in the waist. It's always been my hurdle. THankfully, Callanetics has made more of a difference than anything else I've ever tried. And now I'm gonna try dieting down, extra cardio, and consistent LB training (high rep, lower to moderate weight) and see where it takes me. I know that the running has helped too, so I want to keep that up as well.

Anyway, that's the plan.

Today has been a good day, back to normal appetite (thank you God) and energy levels are good. Took a nap this afternoon. It's been a nice weekend overall. Looking forward to my pancakes shortly, and my run later this evening.

Twyla, I hear ya on the legs thing. I think no matter how thin and toned I get I'm always going to have issues with my legs not being perfect. At the beach I was noticing that a lot of the girls with very shapely legs have heavy middle sections. I am lucky (and you are also) to have a very nice waist...I think I'd much rather have that then super legs. But muscular, toned legs like you described are definitely doable for the two of us!

Hey Twyla,

I ran a race Sunday and came up behind a gal that had this on the back of her shirt. I immediately thought of you (not that I think you are whimpering, I think a journal is the perfect place to get our complaints and dissatisfactions "out" and let them go), but anyway..........

Henceforth I ask not good-fortune, I myself am good-fortune,
Henceforth I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing,
Done with indoor complaints, libraries, querulous criticisms,
Strong and content I travel the open road.

VISUALIZE!
Make pictures in your mind.
See the desination.
Imagine your arrival.
Dream in perfect detail.
See yourself the way you want to be when you arrive.
See yourself arriving.
Make yourself a road map and study it every day
until you know the way and the destination by heart.

MONDAY JUL 27

Today was remarkably more controlled in contrast to just a few days ago when I was going through Pre-TOM torment. It's as if the "off switch" was flipped. It is that obvious. Just don't get it...I mean, I do get it, but I don't understand why it has to be so extreme, so controlling.

My plan today was to keep as low carb as I could, 50 or under, but I exceeded that by a bit. Not bad. I will need a medium carb day tomorrow, up to 100 is what I'm gonna aim for. I'm feeling depleted and low on energy. My run last night on a scale of 1 to 10 on energy was probably a 5.

Today was basically a leg and cardio day. Tomorrow will be upper body, abs and cardio.

NUTRITION TOTALS: (not including an entire fresh CRUNCHY cucumber!)

CALS 1508

PROT....179......48%
CARBS....63......16% (over be 13)
FIBER.....16
FAT.....62.....37% (over be 12)

WORKOUTS:

Super Callanetics
4 sets of 30 squats
3 sets single-leg curl ups
40 mins cardio, elliptical

I just heard a great story about an egg.

If you look at a fertile egg and watch it over time you will not see anything happen. This goes on day in and day out. You expect to see something, anything, but nothing changes. Then one day the egg begins to shake and a chick pops out. While the egg sat idle things were changing under the surface.

We all spend too much time looking at the outside of the egg when we should stop and think about what is going on inside.

We all get frustrated with lack of progress, slow strength gains, injuries, and the 100 other things that never come as fast as we like.

Many times busting out of these slumps does not take external changes (special exercises, new diet parameters, supplements, programs, money) but how you are internally programmed.

What internal beliefs do you need to change?

TUES JUL 28

Day's end summary: I enjoyed the extra carbs today, my favorite being breakfast -- I had oatmeal pancakes. They'e sooo good-- even plain, nothing on them! The bulk of my carbs today were from a l/s Detour bar, 2 oz banana, 2 oz berries, oats, cottage cheese, Fiber One, and green veggies, with trace from other sources.

Hunger pretty controlled today. Energy better.

Leaving shortly to go watch youngest son begin his first ever football practice. No pads till this weekend. Two hrs practice most week nights. Anxious to see how he does with this. Does he have the stuff?

Time will tell.

Dani, he did just fine. He's not gonna play the line like his brother. Not built the same, and doesn't have the same fire/mindset. He's a lighter build, quicker on his feet, and not too shabby on speed. So we'll see where it takes him. So far, so good.
