T, this is me, talking to you. And I heart you for even listening and offering to help.

And it will sound like an excuse because, well...it is. I have been in chronic pain from ruptured discs for many years. I had surgery to repair a blown L4/L5 in 2003 but still have issues at C6/C7. So I have a hard time differentiating that pain from DOMS. And I'm always worried I am going to do some more damage. I did start last May using free weights in my basement, very simple Built routine, but I never felt I could get the correct form on squats and dead lifts and got a bit discouraged.

It's not really that I don't recognize DOMS, I do and I LOVE DOMS, just have concern about correct form and doing something I should not be doing.

Example: I took private Pilates lessons from a trainer at my club. Then joined a semi-private Pilates class on the reformers. Mid way thru, I had to stop because 1) the trainer was actually teaching Pilates WRONG, and 2) because of that, my low back was totally jacked up and it took weeks of chiro and therapy to get it back. Now, who would think that Pilates could be bad for you? Uggh.

All that being said, I DO realize there are ways to lift that will not harm me so I just have to research and determine what they are. I mean, there is a wealth of info about it right here on this board so I really have no excuse.

Trying to be honest, probably more with myself than anyone else, right?

Lisa, I didn't realize this. I totally appreciate your inhibitions and reluctance to begin a program that, if done improperly, could aggravate an existing condition for you or cause injury. Totally appreciate that, and no, I don't feel that you're searching for excuses.

Yes, I agree, you probably need to speak to a reputable trainer, perhaps one that your doctor(s) would recommend, someone who has dealt with back injuries before and knows the right and wrong approach for this type of client. I would DEFINITELY discuss this with your doctor before you begin ANY program.

By the way, have you mentioned this to your docs at all? If so, what have they advised you about strength training?

I know that there are exercises that we can do which will STRENGTHEN our backs and will help prevent further injury. I also know that Callanetics, for a fact, is very therapeutic for back issues. I've mentioned this a BUNCH of times on these boards before, but I used to be susceptible to recurring back injury/flareups, and I'd have to take meds, use heat/ice, sometimes PT to get back into my normal routine. This would happen on/off, and the least little movement of everyday activity, no warning, would trigger this. Until I began doing Callanetics. I am FOREVER GRATEFUL to Callan Pinckney for bringing this program into my life. Since I've been doing Callanetics regularly (since 2006), I have not had one flareup. And this was BEFORE I began getting serious about progressive weight training. It is why (one of the reasons) I insist on keeping Callanetics a part of my weekly routine indefinitely.

I think there is a right and wrong way for you to begin a strength training program. But you're right, you need to make sure you have gotten the blessing from your docs first, and then can find the right professional to help you.

One of my favorite links that shows all the various types of exercises for lifting, narrative and videos that show and explain proper form, musculature, etc., is:

Exercise & Muscle Directory

I'm sorry that you've had these issues. I hope you can overcome and find the right program and direction that can help prevent further injury and will help you gain the strength and flexibility that all of us need for overall health and wellbeing.

Keep me posted on this...I'm VERY interested.

And Lisa, if you do begin a program, I'm sure you'll be told this, but please begin slowly, very light weight, 2-3 x a week for several weeks before progressing to heavier weight; and never begin a lifting session without warming up FIRST for no less than 10 mins of some light cardio and/or light stretching.

Yes, Kim, well said. It speaks to mine as well.

Afterall, that's where passion lies, deep within our hearts.

It's good to reflect on these things at times. It allows us to clear the debris and the roadblocks.

I hope you had a pleasant drive, and that your day has gone well with your client.

Hey Twyla!

I was thinking of you and thought I'd look you up to see how you're doing. As usual, you're full of wonderful advice and thought-provolking posts. And new pics - I love this last one of you! I've always been a fan of sepia tones photographs with the only the subject in a light wash of color.

Hey, Laura.

It's always nice to hear from you. And thanks re the pic...taken on my back porch--my oasis.

I am with you on the sepia thing. Absolutely love sepia effects on photos. It places a richness, timelessness, classiness to photos IMO. I'm thinking of starting a framed sepia photo collection on one of the walls in my house of some "favorites" of family. Matching frames, sepia finish. Yep.

I need to look you up and find out what's goin' on with you. I've been a bit disconnected lately.

Turning it around though...

Thanks, Ileen and Lola.

This season can be emotionally challenging. I'll leave it at that.

That's all the more reason for gathering support from friends to keep focused and stay healthy both mentally AND physically.

My workout at the gym last night was fabulous and I left there feeling so uplifted and energized.

I followed up my LB session with 25 mins of cardio intervals on the elliptical.

As I left the gym, walking to my car in the cold night air, my mind was clearer, my burdens seemed lighter, the snow falling made me smile, and my inner voice was saying,"Good job, girl,"....."it's gonna be okay."

And this just proves: It really is cheaper than therapy.

Another day of success, focus, commitment.

I have taken the day off to get several things done. After working on transcripts a while (never-ending) this morning, enjoying coffee and solitude, I showered and headed to the gym. Today was delts, triceps, and token abs (still screaming from yesterday), 40 mins. Followed by 25 mins of cardio intervals on the elliptical.

I had made a stop before making it to the gym, and was browsing the candle section, in conversation with a few customers over the best and least favorite scents, and a couple walks in. Somehow we ended up on the subject of gym membership (they asked where I go) and working out, which led to more and more conversation. When she asked my age, she went a little crazy when I told her I was 50. Her compliments made me feel so good; she wouldn't quit. I made her promise before leaving there that both of them (they had already been considering gym membership) would make it over to MY gym to check it out. I encouraged her about all the reasons they SHOULD be working out, regardless of age, etc., and she told me I had inspired her like no one ever has before. Wow. She then turned to her husband and said, "That's what I want to look like...I want to join her gym...let that be part of my Christmas present."

Earth angels. I was one for her today, she was one for me.

Life works that way sometimes.

And yes, I left the gym today on Cloud Nine, as usual.

Decorating a bit now, listening to smooth, jazzy Christmas music...it's been good.

Wow. This is crazy.

I've been awake since 2:00 am. It's now 3:29 and I'm still wide awake.

Great.

Oh, well. At least it's relaxing watching the snow fall outside.

So beautiful!

I've tried my usual small serving of Cheerios and skim milk to help me shut down. It didn't work.

(sigh)

I've been reading the boards on LCF, hoping reading would do it. Nah.

I'll keep trying.

It's Monday morning and it's FREEZING outside. The last couple of days -- and the remainder of the week -- very cold temps. No running outside in this weather for me.

I got in cardio yesterday early before I got tired. Not having much sleep Saturday night, I knew I'd wanna crash early on Sunday night. Saturday was a rest day for me, and it was well needed. Hoping to make it to the gym this evening.

In my quest to drop a few pounds before Christmas, I'm hoping the worst of this "challenge" is almost over. Due to start TOM any day, and yesterday was an EXTREMELY hungry day for me. I fought it like crazy all day. I managed to resist the carbs and junk, and though I didn't track my food, I ate/grazed quite a bit all day on low carb, higher fat food to help stay satisfied. This week's loss was two pounds. I'll weigh again on Friday.

I just had some coconut oil, choco PP, a drop of s/f Davinci's and a couple chopped walnuts with my morning coffee. I woke up hungry, tummy growling already. Hoping the sweet, higher fat, low carbs will hit the happy button and calm the hungries for a while. On days like this, if I didn't have to work, small doses of light cardio throughout the day would help to keep my hunger suppressed. Grazing revs the metab, and the cardio would help burn the fat and calories as well as control cortisol. But I can't do that exactly. Hmmm. Maybe I'll take a change of clothes and try doing 10 mins of stairs on my lunch hour. Anything to keep the heart rate up.

My body is in dire need of Callanetics this morning. Typical back aches and tenderness from pre-TOM, and the Callanetics should nail those symptoms and start my day feeling much better. I slept through the night last night, not waking at all, making up for lost time.

Hoping I can at least hold my own this week with my weight loss. It is what it is.

Christmastime is here. The snow outside is beautiful. A time that always makes me smile. I'm fighting it this Christmas...I hurt...I'm sad...I have holes in my heart. I allow the memories to bring me joy, even if they're painful to recall. It's all I have to hold onto.

As an elixir, I seek out people and things in my life who make me smile, laugh, who uplift me. My coping mechanism. My two older sons will be home for Christmas soon. I have that to look forward to. I choose to focus on my blessings. On the positive. On the good. On the beautiful. On friendships. On the joys. On what is important.

Coffee is good. I'm starting there.

Kim, you are SO SWEET. How could I take that any other way?

I hope you had a good day with your client the other day.

How IS Kim, by the way?

Very busy day for me. I made it to the gym after work, great workout, lifting heavier on squats tonight, along with backward lunges and hamstring work; triceps, some lateral throws, and abs. Felt great...riding the passion for all it was worth. Followed by 25 mins cardio intervals on elliptical.

On my way home from the grocery store tonight, I was channel surfing (puh-leeeeze, no cheesy Christmas carols, people!) and I heard the tail end of this fabulous song. The beat/percussion was great. I knew it should be added to my playlist. The DJ then announced it was "Stereo Love." So after I put the groceries away and browned up some ground turkey with taco seasoning, peppers & onions, marinated a couple pounds of chicken (getting prepared for the week), I cleaned up the kitchen and headed straight to Amazon to download it....Stereo Love. Yeah, a new song for my playlist.

It's been a good day. VLC day, the only carbs coming from my early morning LC tortilla and trace/incidental stuff.

It's time for bed. I'm getting my sleep in tonight.

Wise Words of the Day

Here are the reasons why exercise - not dieting - is the superior method of losing body fat:

1. Exercise – aerobic and weight training - raises your metabolic rate.
2. Exercise creates a caloric deficit without triggering the starvation response.
3. Exercise is good for your health. Dieting is harmful to your health.
4. Exercise, especially weight training, signals your body to keep your muscle and
not burn it for energy. Dieting without exercise can result in up to 50% of the
weight loss to come from lean body mass.
5. Exercise increases fat-burning enzymes and hormones.
6. Exercise increases the cells sensitivity to insulin so that carbohydrates are burned
for energy and stored as glycogen rather then being stored as fat.

Wow. It's 18 degrees out right now, wind chill at 5.

Expecting 1-3 more inches of snow tonight.

A month or so ago I moved my elliptical from the bedroom to the garage. That's where I'm headed now. I begin with shorts and 2-3 layers of shirts/jackets, and then by the time I'm finished, I'm down to shorts and a tank top or T-shirt.

I've just had coffee with coconut oil, which always raises my internal temperature PRESTO. So I may not need as many layers starting out.

Waiting to see if there are school delays.

Sleep last night? Not so good.

DOMS have begun setting in in my glutes and thighs from the squats yesterday. Plus, I began yesterday with some very focused Callanetics, so I may be walking funny for a couple of days.

I wanna hang onto this sense of re-focus. I'm on track with both nutrition (most importantly) and workouts, and I'm trying to hold on tight. My goal is within sight. I can do this.

Hi Twyla- glad to hear you so focused. Sorry that you are not sleeping so well- same here- my day generally begins at 2am - but then I just keep working at my little projects that I have started then crash a little earlier in the evening.
We are heading into middle summer here so 30 degrees everyday and higher.
