Wednesday morning; June 16

Sitting here in the quiet with a cup of coffee, waiting for my body to fully wake up before I head down to the weight room. I've not missed a day of working out since I left home, excepting the day I flew down. So that was my "rest day" of the week. I'll be tied up on Saturday and Sunday of this week, so I'll be looking at two back-to-back days of rest at that time.

It's bittersweet being in paradise. I want to be here for my family; they deserve a vacation too. But my heart also is heavy with worry about my mom at home. She's declining, and she's constantly in my mind. I know she's in good hands right now, but still.

So I compartmentalize once again -- to get through it. It's how I deal with the pain that life brings my way from time to time. I know that I'll inevitably have to deal with it eventually, but as I need to, I remove myself from a situation and live for that day, that moment, the task at hand.

Working out and staying healthy has been a lifesaver for me as well. I can literally FEEL the stress and anxiety leave my body with each breath, each drop of sweat, pushing out each final rep. It's nothing short of exhilarating. I've made friends in the weight room, people who share the passion. A wonderful comraderie of devotees. A new face yesterday paused to ask me: "Excuse me, are you a personal trainer?" My thoughts: Uh, no, but I'm flattered that you asked. I'm just maintaining my right to wear my two-piece at the beach with confidence at almost-50.

I brought along my scales and have tracked my food from rising each morning, up until dinner. I'm enjoying delicious meals at dinner, but choosing with discretion and portion control.

Went to a FANTASTIC Irish pub/restaurant last night for dinner. Oh.My. Awesome food, atmosphere, music. My favorite so far.

My middle son and I keep each other honest and committed. He has not missed a workout either. He's having to focus mainly on cardio and ab work. There isn't enough weight in our weight room to challenge him. He's gotten to go to the Marriott next door a couple of times where there's heavier weight, so that's been helpful for him. I know he's missing the big guns back home.
He, two of his friends and my husband left this morning for a deep-sea fishing trip. Hope they bring back some yummy dinner...

Beautiful weather. Great friends. And.............
I
still
hold the title
as Bocce Ball Champion.

Another tournament awaits today.

Grateful for the opportunity to be here with family and good friends to celebrate life.

SATURDAY JUNE 19

Today is my oldest son's birthday. He's in Japan, so for him, it was "yesterday." We sort of celebrated via skype at Marco Island, overlooking the bay. It was sad that he couldn't be at Marco with us this year, but from what I hear, he's had some wonderful experiences and opportunities while in Japan, and he will be home in just over a month! We can celebrate his birthday properly when he returns.

He has lost almost 65 POUNDS! He looks WONDERFUL! Cannot wait to see him.

My youngest son and I arrived home from vacation earlier this evening. It was a wonderful vacation, excellent weather, great food, good times, laughter, memories, lots of sun, and believe it or not, I stayed on plan and worked out every day -- and didn't regret it one bit! Enjoyed a yummy dinner each evening, and indulged with key lime pie on my birthday, while the guy singing live "beach music" at the restaurant on the inlet sang happy birthday to me! It was a fabulous birthday celebration.

Now to get back to reality. I'll be visiting with my mother in the morning. I can't wait to spend time with her (sigh).

My favorite time of day...sunset!

I could have stayed by the shore for hours and hours and hours....

ESPECIALLY with live "Marley" music playing just a few feet away.

SUNDAY JUN 20

Today is a day of worship. I normally would be going to church, but I feel it's far more important to spend this day with my mother. Her days are numbered, and I'm told the last few days have not been good. I can't identify the feelings in my heart and head right now. It sort of feels like denial, but not. It's a deep sadness, frustration, anxiety, helplessness. I want to DO something for her, but I don't know what. Putting a voice to my feelings so that they will no longer suffocate the hidden places of my heart.

I'm hoping that just being at her side will fill my void. It's likely she may not even know that I am there; it doesn't matter. What matters is that I WILL be there.

I woke up early, even though my body likely needs the extra sleep from having traveled home from vacation. I want to release some pent up stress and worry and fear, so I've had coffee and I'm gonna go for a power walk, then shower, then make my way to the Hospice Center.

My heart is heavy. I will be strong another day.

Twyla,

I don't mean to intrude but in 2002 I lost my mother. She had been ill for a while. I was with her as much as possible and fed her Haagen Daz chocolate ice cream her last night with us - she whispered she loved me. Thank God I was there. We were best friends and talked several times a day before she became so ill. I have no regrets - I miss her terribly and I am grateful that I was able to be with her throughout her illness. There was nothing more important than that to me. I know your mother hears you and knows you are there for her. Unfortunately my brother lived away and visited when he could but he had/has a busy career. He has told me the only regret he has in his life is that he was not with our mother more. It won't be any easier for you when she is gone but you will feel free and at peace knowing you were there for her and knowing she knew and felt your love.

Thank you, all of you, for your words of comfort. One never realizes how much a simple "praying for you," or "thinking of you" means when a person is hurting. It's so uplifting and comforting. Friends are such blessings. I love you all.

My mother has Kathleen passed from this earth into His presence of glory. Her final days were heartbreaking, with less and less ability to speak or eat, an increasing battle to simply breathe or rest. But that battle is over, and she is at rest now, made whole. For that I am supremely grateful, given peace to know that she is without pain or illness or sadness or tears. Her joy and health is restored, and she’s in His Everlasting Arms. I will see her again.

"...we grieve.. but not like those who have no hope"
1 Thessalonians 4:13"

She was the best mother (and father) a daughter could ever ask for. She spent her life sacrificing for her four children, and she raised each of us well and righteously and with unconditional love. She lived her life with faithful service to God and abundant love for her family. Surrounded in life by her four children, ten grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren, she was showered with our love and devotion, even to her last breath.

My ache is too deep for words, missing her presence, but I hold fast to my love for her and my faith with hope of knowing that I will see her again one day.

Sweet blessed Mother...who watches from above,
I am paused to remember.
I'll always remember.
And between now and then,
until I see you again,
I'll be loving you....
