Joyce's Journal
This is the first entry of my journal starting 5/14/06! My weigh-ins are Sunday and I will update once a week.
I've had a long journey and still a long way to go. I started out well over 200 pounds. I am now down to 200 pounds and still have 60 pounds to go. My goal weight is 140, which puts me in the top range of a healthy BMI. I have dieted for most of my life - been through anorexia as a teenager, tried every diet under sun. For most of my life my self-worth was tied up in how much I weighed. Pretty sick! I figure by now I know as much about dieting as any registered dietician. I am not bragging; it is actually sad. Sad because with all my "knowledge" I could never maintain a weight loss. I feel that is because I always aimed for a model skinny goal weight. My goal weight was always 120. At that weight I was model thin and very acceptable to our culture. But I could NEVER maintain it for more than two years at a time. At 140 I will be a size 12 or 14 with curves. At one point in my life weighing 140 was fat to me. Now I will feel grateful and blessed to get back down to 140! Like I said I've tried everything on the sun, and I have settled on a low glycemic load diet, the one by Rob Thompson. Why? This makes me feel the healthiest and is a good fit for me. He has two books out, The New Low Carb Way of Life, and a newer one called the Glycemic Load Diet. It's similar to South Beach in that there's no counting, weighing or measuring, but the similarity ends there. It's much more generous in fat, and all kinds of fresh fruits and vegetables are encouraged (except for starchy veg, fruit and dried fruits). Grains are greatly discouraged, and he gives you easy techniques to eat without obsessing. I find this way of eating very easy. The only time it's tough is when I have to eat out, because I'm lacto ovo vegetarian, and my choices are more limited. But this year I'm learning to focus less on food and more on my surroundings, company, etc. I figure there's always something to eat later if I can't get a decent restaurant meal! It's not "traumatic" anymore! I'll have to start posting my stats and figure out how to do that. Here's my menu for today: Upon Arising: Coffee with heavy cream and Splenda syrup (Davicini) Snack: Starbucks Vente' Iced latte' Lunch: 1 South Beach pizza with mushrooms and vegetarian sausage added, and a little drizzle of olive oil raw baby carrots Dinner: large bowl of salad with feta-stuffed roasted peppers, crumbled vegetarian bacon and Newman's Lighten Up Italian Dressing Snack for later: Dannon low carb yogurt smoothie drink with 3 tb. flax meal and 1 hpg. tb. Benefiber stirred in (I've discovered this really fills me up and I don't need to go back to the fridge at night). Well, that's it for today. I try to drink enough water, as well. Usually I eat breakfast, but I was rushed and wasn't hungry for it today. I am a big coffee drinker! Glad to find this part of the board. I just wasn't enjoying the main lobby anymore. Stats: Starting weight 200+ current weight: 200 Goal weight: 140 Joyce |

P.S.
I forget to add that I had a mango after lunch. I also "moved" (walked) for an hour today. My choice of exercise is definitely a lot of walking. |

What is it about onederland? I made it and was thrilled, but now my weight's back up to 200! I'm sure it's water retention, but still...ouch!
I know this will be a bumpy road with ups and downs and I'll just let myself enjoy the ride. What is the alternative? Stress and weight obsession! That's why for me, I'll only be weighing in once a week, although I have read a study that stated that folks that weigh in every day are more successful at weight control. For now though, it's once a week for me. |
