Back down a pound today. I really feel today like I’ve learned some good things from this past weekend. I’ve learned that the binge/restrict way of life that I had been on does not work. To reduce calories to extremes just leads to failure. I’ve learned that the scale will not rule over me. It will be just another tool I use to maintain and stay healthy. I can’t lose fat by restricting everything. Eventually I will binge. That is a dangerous cycle. I learned this weekend that a diet break can really be healthy. With that mindset I can easily get right back on plan with my eating because I didn’t “cheat.” Cheat is such a negative word. If I can continue to eat right and exercise like I have been for the last couple of months I know that I can become healthier and even more in shape. It tells me that an occasional weekend celebration or vacation is not the end of the world. It tells me that I don’t need to stress about food so much. I just need to eat right and exercise. I won’t ignore the scale, but I will not place as much importance in it either. How I feel, and how my clothes fit and how I look are far better indicators of my overall health.

Saturday I took a hike that there is no way I could have gone on last year or anytime in the recent past. It was 7 miles of some fairly steep terrain and it was pretty hot out. I was totally fine. In fact I could have gone on for longer. I was really glad at how I felt after the hike. I know that I am in better shape and healthier now. I also know that the pounds will continue to drop and I will get to goal. But as long as I am losing inches and clothes sizes I won’t stress not losing pounds. You can’t argue with the mirror. For now I will just continue on the way I’m eating and exercising. I’ll keep learning and discovering who I am and who I can be.

Thanks Grp. There is no perfect road and I'm far from perfect. There will be bumps and I'm sure I can deal with them. Thanks for the comment.

Binges are such an ugly thing. As I continue to fight them, I’ve discovered one thing. I only binge when I’m alone. I never binge around my family or at work. Last night I was alone (family is gone a few days) and after a decent dinner I started to binge. I was able to shut it down, but it really ticked me off. So the key is to never be alone. Well, that will never work, but I’ve got to either get out of the house, or do something else that will distract me when the binge is attacking.

Anyway, even after a mini binge I am down again this morning. Still have a few more to go to get to my lowest this year, but I’ll get there and beyond. It is really tough right now. I’ll just keep fighting.

A really good day yesterday. Eating was completely on plan and I had a great hike at lunch. It is really getting hot. Had eggs for dinner and then went to a movie with my Son. We had a great time and I wasn’t at home to be tempted to binge. My weight was down a little this morning and is getting back to pre-weekend status. It is taking a little longer than I wanted, but I’ll get there.

Friday! Good day yesterday. Eating was good but exercise was not. I was gone during lunch so no hike. I went bowling with my son last night and we had a great time. The scale is down again today. Almost back to pre-splurge. It’s good to know that I can get back in control. Planning on a hike at lunch today and a nice long one tomorrow. It has been at or near 100 degrees all week and there is no sign of it letting up so I make sure I’m done with my long hikes before noon.

Monday. Interesting weekend. Saturday I got up early and went for a hike. I hiked in a new area and it was great. I used my new hand held gps device on the hike. I had a great time and got some good exercise. I was able to finish the 6-mile hike just as it was getting hot. It hit 100 here on Saturday and where I was it probably was 5 degrees or so hotter.

Saturday night I got a leg cramp in my right inner thigh that I thought was going to kill me. I have never had that kind of pain before. It ran from my inner knee to my groin. No position I got into would stop the cramp. Normally you can stand on a cramp and stop it. This one would not go away. I don’t ever remember that level of pain. It lasted maybe 15 minutes. I tried heat, cold, bananas, anything I could think of. Nothing was working. I held my knee to my chest and tried to hold perfectly still. Any movement seemed to launch another cramp. Finally it started to let up. All night it would try to start again if I moved my leg. Then at about 11:00pm my left leg did the exact same thing. This time I pulled my leg into my chest right away and massaged the muscle. It eased off a lot faster than the other.

All day Sunday my legs were really sore. The right one is still really sore today. I can hardly go up the stairs without wincing in pain. It is really ridiculous. Today, my right leg feels like the muscle has seriously been damaged. I don’t know what brought it on but I don’t ever want to experience that kind of pain again.

I’m going to give my legs a break and take it easy the next few days. No hiking no lifting. With vacation coming up this Friday, it makes me nervous and I want to be ready for hiking and exploring Alaska.

Eating for the weekend was pretty good. Sunday I went off plan a little but not bad.

Alex! I've read through your journal, and I'm inspired by your willingness to stick with it! You've come so far! I have an emotional/rebellous problem with food as well. Reading through how you're working it out, figuring it out, step by step, day by day, is really awesome!

Today is my longest day of the month. Staff meeting today and board meeting tonight. After I get through today I only got one more day of work and then vacation. Alaska should be great. Nice and cool. It has been really hot here and I’m ready for a break.

My leg feels better today so I’m planning on hiking at lunch today. I’ll take water and try to hydrate better this time. I’m also looking into mineral replacement.

My weight is still fluctuating. I’m not doing a really great job with my eating lately. I don’t know what the deal is, but motivation is really low. I’ve got to snap out of this. My family is not helping. I continually find crappy food around the house. Little chocolates and other junk foods. My wife is not strong with this stuff and if I’m not careful I get weak and partake. It makes me mad when I see that crap in my house, but even angrier when I eat it!! I need to get past this so I am good while on vacation. I want to enjoy myself but I don’t want to go overboard either.

Keep fighting.

Monday. I’m back from vacation. We had a good time. The weather in Alaska was very nice and cool, rarely over 60! It has been tough coming back to the 100’s. I weighed in when I got back and was up 4 pounds from my last post. I have lost those four plus one more so it took less than a week to get back on track. I didn’t really eat junk, just had lots of restaurant food and not near as much water as normal.

We saw Glaciers, lots of wildlife, went fishing (caught a 121 pound halibut), saw some sights and had a good time together.

Had some fun the night we got home. Our evaporative cooler broke and water leaked into our master bedroom. The last few days I’ve dealt with insurance companies, cleaning companies etc. The ceiling is gone and you can see to the rafters. Our bedroom is unlivable right now so we have been sleeping on a futon. This is not the way I planned the last of my vacation.

Hiked at lunch today, it was really hot. Eating has been good and I’m back on plan. I really want to push it now and get under 200.

Well I’ve seen some more drops the last two days and it has been great. I’ve now lost all the gains from Alaska plus all I gained in June. I was at 203.4 this morning and feel like I’m doing all the right things and am on track to get under 200.

Our bedroom is still a mess but at least all the fans and junk are out and we are living back in it. Now I have to get a contractor to put it all back together. One step at a time.

I’ve hiked at lunch every day this week and it has been really hot. Monday was a tough hike, as I must have gotten a little out of shape while on vacation. Tuesday was a lot better and I expect today to be even better.
