Julia Ross- newest book

Anyone read it?

sweet irony 11-11-2012 07:26 PM

I'm glad to know about it. I'll be reading it for sure. The Diet Cure changed my life.

HappyHappyJoyJoy 11-12-2012 06:53 AM

What is it called? I don't see it on amazon.

DiamondDeb 11-12-2012 12:07 PM

I did not realize there was a new one! Thanks for the heads up.

It is an updated version of The Diet Cure & it was released in May of this year. The only way I could tell the difference was to check the release date when I found the book on Amazon.

The Diet Cure: The 8-Step Program to Rebalance Your Body Chemistry and End Food Cravings, Weight Gain, and Mood Swings--Naturally

I got my copy from Amazon.

Thanks! I will check it out! I have a version of this book, just don't know which one....

emky 11-12-2012 06:45 PM

Most of the supplements she recommends either do nothing for me or give me a headache. I've tried DL Phenylalanine + tyrosine for energy (did nothing), and 5-HTP does calm me down, but it also makes me tired and my head aches minutes after taking it. This is just my experience, but I don't doubt these supps could potentially be life saving for others. :dunno:

I have "The Diet Cure". I didn't know she updated it. I will check this out!! Thanks for letting us know which book was the new one.

jeaniem 11-13-2012 10:21 AM

Julia does state that if the supps do not help you it is most likely due to thyroid or adrenal dysfunction. I am reading the book now, but am getting the feeling that if we eat a high protein low carb diet we can achieve the same results without needing most of the supplements. The supps are only meant to be used short term.

adiasmc1 11-13-2012 01:22 PM

Yes, her book was a lifesaver for me. I was a gigantic mess, getting worse and worse, 3 years after having my son. Nothing worked, not diet, not pills, not therapy, nothing, I just couldn't seem to pull out of the deep hole I was in.

I found her book because of this site and thought, heck, it can't hurt, I have tried everything else. I followed the suplementation for about 3-4 months and then I felt good enough to go off. I don't take them anymore. Within 3 days of starting the supps, I felt like a whole new person. I know it won't work for everyone, but it must of been what my body needed. I will always keep it as a back up in case things get bad again.

I didn't know she had a new updated version out, I will have to check it out too. Thanks!

Biochic 11-13-2012 01:36 PM

put a hold on this from the library. looking forward to reading it and getting started on some supplements. As someone above said- it can't make things worse so I'll give it a shot:)

DiamondDeb 12-05-2012 02:27 PM

I've just started reading the new version of The Diet Cure but, OMGosh, this book was poorly edited.

Glaringly obvious typos before I got to page one.

In one chapter she says to take Chromium before/between meals and in another she says to take it with meals. The original book stated with meals was important. Is this a mistake or does it all of a sudden not matter? :stars:

jeaniem 02-17-2013 10:59 AM

Just started reading this again this morning in a desperate attempt to find out why I binge. I do find the book a bit overwhelming and feel like I could probably take every amino suggested. I don't like how she describes these scenarios of people in her office having sudden changes in brain chemistry just moments after taking an amino acid. I am going to give it a try though. Does anyone know if I need to purchase the GABA if I already have 5htp and l- tryptophan?

emky 02-17-2013 11:23 AM

^^Hey, jeaniem--not sure about your GABA question but I thought I might mention something that has personally helped me a great deal to lessen my bingeing issues (the frequency + the amount I consume):

1-2 tsp. of cod liver oil (great source of vitamin A and D) taken WITH about a tbs of pasture butter (vitamin K2). I became significantly less depressed and way more energetic with a week of beginning this daily regimen. I still overeat often enough but I rarely eat to the point of significant discomfort anymore (i.e. a huge amount of food that I would be ashamed for anyone to know about).

I stopped all other supplements, including extra vitamin D when I started on the CLO and butter. I have stuck with it for about 2 1/2-3 months and I continue feeling better and better every week that passes.

Of course, this is a highly personal thing and what works for me might make someone worse. Thought I'd mention it anyway. For all I know you've tried CLO before or are taking it now.

adiasmc1 02-17-2013 11:40 AM

Jeaniem,

If I remember correctly, GABA is for relaxation, l-tyrosine is for energy. So it depends what you need. 5-HTP is for increased serotonin.

I did the whole supplementation for about 3 months, probably about 4-6 pills every few hours. It was a pain, but it worked wonders for me. I know it doesn't work for everyone.

After about 3 months, I dropped most of the supps and now I only take the GABA at night, 750mgs, about an hour before I go to bed. And 100 mgs of HTP in the early morning, around 8 am.

Thanks. I do have some CLO in the fridge but often forget to take it. So the K2 is in the pastured butter?

I would be ashamed to admit what I can eat too:o Let's just say my binges in terms of amount of food eaten have gotten so much worse. I can eat twice as much food as before. Scary...

I hope you continue to do well emky:)

I meant l-tryptophan not l-tyrosine. I didn't know if the gaba, 5htp, and tryptopan were all basically used for anxiety. You only take the GABA at night? Does the 5thp make you drowsy at all? Thanks!

I think I can use every single amino acid too :o I am re-reading her book "The Diet Cure" and from my notes before, I have not changed. I need to start her therapy but don't know what to take, since I need all of them. I am starting with her l-glutamine and DLPA suggestions because that is what I have from last time. I will add more as I read more. So far the l-glutamine has helped me with my chocolate cravings big time. I still want chocolate, but I can not have it. That is huge in my book because I am surrounded by it  I have not had any since my last piece on Valentine's day. So far so good. The only thing I know about the 5-Htp is don't take it when you are taking Welbutrin. I was on that script for 2 months and just never refilled as I didn't think it was doing anything for me. The 5 Htp doesn't make ME drowsy, I took it when Julia says to--haven't had any in along while so I don't remember her recommendations. But I do remember taking it and felt good on it. Have to start that one too! Since I already have it.

jeaniem 02-18-2013 07:49 AM

Well I took the L-tryptophan an hour before bedtime last night and it did not go well. I woke up several times during the night feeling nauseous and now have a headache.

Dawn
I feel so ADD right now it is all I can do to read and comprehend the book. Like you I have a lot of the stuff on hand, so will start with the dlpa, chromium. L-glut,free amino supplement and maybe 5 htp if I feel bingey/anxious in the evening. I take wellbutrin in the morning and from what I read it is okay to use the 5thp as long as they are spaced several hours apart. Do you take the l-glut sublingually? I took the capsules w/ food before and didn't notice a difference in cravings, but have since heard between meals is best.:dunno:

dawnyama 02-18-2013 09:11 AM

I take the l-glut on an empty stomach. Taking it WITH food lessens its effect because it "fights" with the protein to be useful. Therefore if you want it to be effective for cravings--it HAS to be on an empty stomach. I take it as she directs in her book --- first thing in AM, then mid AM and mid afternoon. My l-glut right now is in a capsule shape, but tablet form. So I take it whole--cannot be broken up!

jeaniem 02-18-2013 12:40 PM

Book says no coffee! That in itself is reason enough to be depressed.

dawnyama 02-18-2013 02:06 PM

Oh, no. I have not gotten to that part. What page is that on? I have the old version of "The Diet Cure"...is that what you are reading? My doctor told me to quit coffee too because of my adrenal fatigue. I did so and didn't notice any difference so I went back to drinking it. I could handle doing without once again.

jeaniem 02-18-2013 05:47 PM

I am reading her newest book on Kindle. She says that caffeine depletes neurotransmitters especially when used in place of a high protein breakfast due to caffeine suppressing the appetite. Therefore starting the day with a deficit of serotonin which the brain is trying to play catch up for all through the day which may cause binging/overeating later in the day.
She suggests L-tryosine in place of caffeine.

jeaniem 02-18-2013 06:28 PM

Has anyone tried therapy?

dawnyama 02-19-2013 03:57 AM

jean--I start every single day with a cup of coffee!!! I have to get tyrosine. When I went shopping last week it was on my list and I forgot to take my list with me. Came home with theanine instead. Oh, I could have kicked myself!!! Thanks for the info!!!!

I am trying hormone therapy this year--seeing a hormone specialist. Had the blood work done and have a consult in a couple of weeks. Other than that, no therapist. But I need it, that is for sure.

jeaniem 02-19-2013 03:21 PM

I ordered some GABA, hopefully will get it by Thursday, I need something badly. Poor DH has been bewildered by my mood the last couple of days as am I. I totally lost it today and cried about being old and fat and a bunch of other stuff, and then proceeded to go into a rage and wipe off the contents of my coffee table. I just left the mess for a while and stood in the a very hot shower and cried it out. I know some of the upset is about my weight gain, it is not so much the gain as it is feeling powerless to control my eating. This anger/rage is not me anyone who knows me would not believe I would act like this.

dawnyama 02-20-2013 03:53 AM

:console::console:

I am so sorry. I understand your frustration. I am seeing this specialist for bio identical hormones because my mom told me I was acting irrationally. Lately everyone has been irritating me---I mean everyone. I have "gone off" on people who have really done nothing. She said she was the same way when she was my age and said I needed some hormones as she did. Maybe you can check it out. I am far from menopause, so I know I am not nearing that, but my hormones have been off for a long long while. I can tell. The clinician I saw when I went in for the consult at the hormone center said that they can "fix" me!! So far, what I have tried has not helped  so I have high hopes this is the answer.

jeaniem 02-20-2013 01:33 PM

Dawn
Does insurance cover this? My GABA is out for delivery, hope it helps! I am in a numb fog today and just the thought of a binge scares me to death! This may sound crazy but I can truly see marriages ending and bad things happening if I continue on as I have been the last few months. You know when I eat clean I don't feel so unstabe mentally, so I am not sure it is hormonal? I also left a message at Dr's office requesting a blood draw to see if my armour needs adjusting.

dawnyama 02-20-2013 04:34 PM

Jeanie--my DH is about ready to leave. He has been frustrated at my not wanting him in the same way he totally wants me. Bless his heart. He can only be turned down so many times on a daily basis before his moral is just shot. That is why I am doing this. My family should not suffer. It is costing me out of pocket as the clinic I am going to cannot be in network with any kind of insurance in order to order the correct tests and prescribe what they do. They don't want insurance to dictate what they can do! Hooray for them! Boo for us! I will get the paperwork to file with my insurance but I don't know if they cover it or not. But I paid a little with my health savings account (thank God for that!) and will be put on a monthly payment plan for the rest. Like I said, totally worth it if I get to keep my marriage in tact.

I am on Armour as well and feel for sure I am NOT optimized at all. I was lucky to find a doc how would give it to me, a doc who would continue giving it to me when my original doc dropped her patients. So I feel I don't have anyone else to ask for help but a "real" specialist. One who won't go by the numbers alone. I need someone to listen to my symptoms too. It seems this doc/clinic will. I will definitely update you when I go in 2 weeks. I am very excited to find out the results of the blood draw.

jeaniem 02-20-2013 05:07 PM

DH works night shift and is always wiped out from lack of sleep so we usually have the reverse problem;) I know when he is rested on days off or we are on vacation the desire is definitely there but I let my mind convince me that he is less attracted since I have gained weight. I know it is not the case but when I get down like this my mind plays tricks on me. I do remember a period when I was on bc and man those things took my physical desire away so I know hormones can have an effect for sure.

Well I took aminos/w5htp today along with dlpa and gaba. I feel slightly less anxious but have a headache from one of the supps.
