New...Discovered L-Glutamine

I have been low carb for about 3 years. I have been pretty strict with it for about 1.5 yrs. I initially lost 85 lbs with PSMF under Dr care. I felt great! I didnt have any of that sluggish feeling i get when i eat carbs i also get IBS symptoms when i eat carbs! ...ugh that's awful!

I still had 20 more lbs to go!! I fell off the wagon and I gained back 20 of it within a few mos. I have not gained any more. I kept on trying to lose the rest to no avail. Every day between 3-7pm I would get these INTENSE carb cravings!!!! I would always find a way to give in to the cravings. I kept searching in these forums for an answer. I was reading that these cravings can be stronger than what a drug addict feels. I knew I wasn't alone. Especially after looking at all the carb addicts around us... I knew there had to be some help here!

I read in some posts about L-glutamine and I started taking it. It works like magic and KNOCKED out those horrible cravings like magic. I am about 8 days in eating low carb and sticking to it. It knocked out some of my hunger too! I have lost 4 lbs so far. My question is: Is it safe to take this stuff the rest of my life? I am soooooo afraid of those cravings coming back and controlling my life! Also, my friiend in a similar situation is not having the same results. Is it possible there is something else going on like an eating disorder? Why would they work for me and not her? Any ideas? Thankssss

I don't know the answer but this supplement is recommended in my Atkin's book and it doesn't state that it could be harmful to take for any extended period of time... maybe someone else will chime in with helpful advice on this...as for your cravings I am glad this worked and you are back on track...maybe after you feel more in control you can ween yourself off of it and see if the cravings start to come back...if they do you know what works and can go back to supplementing.

I did a search on the Internet for L-glutamine safety, and one article declared it safe. Another one warned that people who have seizure disorder, bipolar disorder or a type of encephalitis caused by liver disease, should not take it.

L-glutamine is one of the amino acids, a building block of proteins. I'd be more careful about taking too much ibuprofen, Tylenol or aspirin (all of which can be dangerous) than taking a daily supplement of L-glutamine. But that's just my personal opinion.

Here's the web article you may want to check for yourself:

What time of day do you take the L-glutamine?

I do IF and only eat between 6-10pm so I usually take any supplements after I eat dinner but I wonder if taking L-glutamine in the AM would work better. Can it be taken on an empty stomach without causing nausea?

I take 1/2 hour before lunch and before dinner. 1000-1500 capsules. Depending on how "carby" I'm feeling. Sometimes if over the urge to eat carbs after dinner I will dump a capsule under my tongue. Not much taste and absolutely no nausea or anything like that.

I have wondered if others take this during the day. I recently(well, before LC) went to a diet doctor for the presciption diet pills. I didn't take them because I was too scared of the side effects!

They also gave me supplements to take. The L-Glutimate says to take at night before bedtime. Also the fat burning amino acids are taken at bedtime. I thought this was strange, but I've been doing it and it seems to still be working for me.
I may try taking it during the day and see if anything changes. I can tell a HUGE difference if I don't take them at all. I plan on taking them from now on.
