Julia Ross Mood Cure

I scored high on all of her checklists. Would anyone like to share what supplements have worked for them, if you found yourself scoring high in all the categories?

ETA:Or if you decided to go the prescription route what you found helpful.

I also read The Diet Cure..In addition to The Mood Cure..great help. I still take Taurine for energy and GABA to calm my anxiety daily. GABA has been amazing, as I live with a great deal of anxiety. DH takes some of my GABA to relax so he can fall asleep faster and sleep better. I would do her protocol as she outlines it first. Doing it really diminished my cravings even though I did the protocol for depression/anxiety.

L-glutamine is also an amazing supplement she recommends that helps with cravings. I haven't had to take much of it as of late, because after doing the complete protocol, my cravings have all but disappeared.

I didn't score high in everything,. but I tend towards high anxiety and lack of energy. For me, the 5-HTP has worked wonders! Unfortunately, so does phenylalanine, the amino in aspartame, which I need to avoid. thankfully, she recommends other options. The 5-HTP has been a blessing in this household. It peps my teen son right up--and because it's natural, I know it's something his brain needs (not caffeine, etc). I still need to try tyrosine. I bought some. I love GABA but it makes me freak out a little. I totally spazz on the stuff.

Did you use the 5htp or Saint John's wort? I feel they help the anxiety but make me feel too relaxed and very unmotivated to move much.

Jeanie, I haven't used 5HTP because questions have been raised about its safety when used in conjunction with B12, something about heart valves....I take a lot of B12 for energy, so I thought just to be on the safe side, I'd stay away from 5HTP.

I do not take St John's Wort, either.

Do you take B12? That may help with your energy levels. I take the sublingual and it works well. Shots are even better.

Another thing that I recently discovered for a great energy boost is Chia seeds.

My energy is okay except early in the afternoon normally. But when I take the sjw or 5htp I feel relaxed but too tired to accomplish much. I just started thyroid meds and some adrenal support supplements,so maybe I shouldn't be taking any of this stuff?

Sounds like a good idea....improved thyroid function may eliminate the need to altogether, plus mixing it all may not be good.

I didn't take the 5-htp because of the same research I found as Eliza. What I read scared me.

I did start Sam-E about 2 weeks ago and it has helped me, I feel. I started with 1 a day and now am taking 2. I feel a lot less anxiety. I've also upped my fat/calories which I think is helping too because they were both very low before.

I wanted to add, I started Levothyroxine 3 years ago for hypothyroidism, and it changed my life. Depression/high anxiety where the biggest symptom I had for hypo and it seriously nearly killed me. After starting the meds and losing some weight, I felt like a normal person.

Anxiety and mild sadness (not depression, nothing even close) have just recently started getting to me. But after starting Sam-E and eating more, I'm feeling quite better.

Could you share more info on the question of safety? I Googled & found nothing of concern about B12 & 5-HTP.

Deb-here are some links that I found that I posted in my thread a bit lower in the forum.

Here are some of the links I mentioned I read about 5-HTP that scared me from using it.

5-HTP: Uses, Side Effects, Interactions and Warnings - WebMD

5HTP supplement benefit, side efects, dosage 50 mg, 100 mg - for depression, anxiety, weight loss, sleep

Thanks for the links.

That first one is not supported by science - that scare originated from a contaminated batch of L-Tryptophan years ago. There is a lot of info out there about what happened after that.

The second one is more factual. It is a fact that some people need a very small dose & some can't tolerate it at all. You should also avoid it when on certain medications & always start with the lowest dose, then increase if necessary. The same can be said for just about every supplement.

Using a supplement containing low doses of more than one ingredient meant to help with the same problem can often give the best results. You are more likely to get the benefits without any side effects.
