Iron

The doctor prescribed iron pills for me to take, but they are giving me such stomach distress that it's not funny!
Should I maybe try an over the counter iron supplement?
Have any of you had any luck with them?

I don't take iron supplements so I don't know how much of a help I am going to be - first, I will aske the obvious, are you taking your supplements with food.

I just started a one a day multivitamin (no iron) - which, I might add I have been avoiding for ages cause the last time I tried to take them they upset my stomach horribly - this time, I am sure to take it them with food.

Even with food, the first few days, I still had stomach upset, but I guess my system is accustom to them and I don't have stomach upset. Maybe your system needs some time getting used to it.

My daughter has to take iron for anemia, and she's only 4. She has multiple health issues and they had her taking this GAWD awful liquid stuff that smelled like rotten fish and made her so sick she had a hard time keeping it down.

I finally was referred to a health food store by a fellow mom to buy an herbal iron called Floradix Iron and Herbs...the kind I bought for her is a liquid, but they may also have it in pill form, I am not sure...but it is all herbal and supposed to be more easily absorbed into your system too...which we found to be true...we were able to lower her dose almost immediately and resolved her anemia quite quickly when at one point they were talking about blood transfusions for her because her levels were so critically low. Anyway...it's available at Amazon.com and also at Vitamin Shoppe...probably elsewhere. DD has ulcerative colitis and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and many of the meds she has to take can worsen her anemia...so I did a lot of research. Hope it helps you. I just looked and the liquid form does have 5 g of carbs per serving.

Thank you! I go back to the doctor tomorrow, so I'll see if she can suggest something else.

I just started taking the Floradix and really like it. There is also a product called Slow Fe that releases very slowly over the day. I had to take massive amounts over the past year and that kept me from feeling ill with it.

I seen Slow Fe at Walgreens, darn it's expensive! But if it works without the stomach upset, I'll try it.

I use poly iron 150. That stuff works fast and no stomach distress at all. My pharmacist went thru all the irons, how and where they absorb. It was very interesting.

The one I saw on Amazon wasn't that bad. Cypress Poly-iron 150 Mg Capsules, Iron Supplements - 100 ea was about 14 dollars with free shipping.

The Floradix is about 30 dollars a bottle, and I'm learning I go through a bottle very quickly. The Floradix doesn't upset my stomach at all and I feel brighter with it, but I'm not sure I can keep up with the cost.

This is what I used, too, thanks to you, Ileen. No problems at all. It was a huge help to me.

I should still be taking it.
