L-Glutamine

Ok, so lately I've wanted to eat just to eat. Lately, being the past couple of days. Apparently my appetite is back, and I'm not happy.

I know a lot of people have said they used L-Glutamine for appetite suppressing, so I picked some up today.

Anyone who uses it, does it really work... or do you think, it's more of a placebo effect? I've researched and found a couple articles online, but I'm not able to find more. I'm gonna continue searching this site, but my internet sucks and search doesn't come up. Gr.

Any personal stories/experience?

I started taking it because someone said it would reduce carb cravings. Unfortunately I live with people who love to bake and insist on having cakes, cookies, or pies in the house at ALL times.

Anyway, I found L-glutamine to not just cut carb cravings, but cut my appetite for anything. So, if I'm having a stressful day or I know I'm going to be somewhere where there is a lot of temptation, I'll pop one or two l-glutamine tablets. I don't take them daily, although I can't see what the harm would be.

Works wonders for me!! Good luck!

I don't believe there is any proof it works. I know there have been studies that have shown it to help, but there hasn't been enough to prove it works. I take it and it will help me sometimes, and other times if the cravings are really bad, not at all. You will have to try it and see what it does for you. Even if it is a placebo effect, if it cuts your cravings, who cares!

Hello,

I tried it and it REALLY got me going, the worst cravings I ever had, it doesn't work for some, and it's obviously counterproductive for others..

It does work great for most people. Timing and dosage are important.

There's lots of good info in the thread Bad Cravings? Try this!.

DH LOVES it when he's coming down with a cold.

I generally just eat protein when I have cravings, which isn't often because I'm really paranoid about my diet.

What do cravings have to do with being paranoid about your diet?

I am very paranoid about not eating anything that gives me cravings, if I can help it.

Recently I JUST added in grapefruit, for instance, after ensuring it wouldn't cause any cravings. Cravings, for me, are a death knell.

I'm in vending! All I have to do is reach forward and grab the salty/sugary/frosted goodness and all 62 pounds will rush back to my hips and waist!

That's why I'm paranoid. As long as I don't cheat, I seem to be OK. I just eat more protein and fat when I'm hungry.

I just got over a 2 day migraine, and got up at 2 AM, no nap today, so I apologize for incoherence. I'm waiting on some clothes to dry.

Not all cravings are caused by what we eat.

Oh Heather, you have my sympathies! Migraines are HORRIBLE. Used to have them all the time, especially in the summer. All kinds of prescription meds...nothing helped much. I kept reading and decided that mine were caused by an electrolyte imbalance. I quit drinking so dang much Diet Coke, and began taking calcium, magnesium and potassium every day as though my life depended on it. No more migraines for me! Haven't had one in 7 years.

Obviously, I'm no doctor, so please check with yours if you decide to try this. All I can say is that it works for me!

WOE: former atkins dieter, not on a plan at this time
Hello. I just joined this board as I came across it the other day during a google search for l-glutamine and chromium supplementation. I bought some powder l-glutamine along with 200mcg chromium tablets. I tried this for a couple of days but unfortunately I'm not getting much result. I will keep at this until both bottles are empty, hopefully it will start to really kick in.

Can someone tell me the brands and dosage they are taking?

I'm using the l-glutamine powder by Jarrow Formulas. I take 2grams for each dosage.

Check the link in my post #9 above. It gives info on dosage & timing of the supplements. Both are very important.

Most plain glutamine brands should be fine. Jarrow is a good brand.

Thanks Diamond,

I think part of the problem is that I was taking the chromium between meals instead of with meals. Being I am hypoglycemic, it probably was dropping my blood sugar to low because I was getting those dull headaches.

I just doubled my dose from 2gs to 4gs and I feel an instant head rush where as with only 2 I wasn't feeling a thing. I hope this works.

If I am consistent w/ taking it (2-3X day, daily) it really helps me. If I'm on and off, it does not matter. It's kind of weird - it just turns "off" something in my brain.
