~*~Fall 2008 CLA/GLA...& Whatever Is Working For You !!!~*~

This thread is for anyone wanting to know about the CLA/GLA combo "and" whatever plan is working for you !!!

Come join us and share your plan

Welcome"

Because of the potential for side effects and interactions with medications, dietary supplements should be taken only under the supervision of a knowledgeable healthcare provider.

What is CLA/GLA?

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)—to promote lean muscle while burning fat.

Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA)—for its many beneficial effects in fighting muscle inflammation and supporting the immune system. From a fat loss perspective, GLA is vital in supporting the production of two strong fat burning hormones…growth hormone and the body’s primary calorie burning hormone, thyroid hormone. GLA should be taken with food

Most effective daily dose...
CLA 3400 mg (1/2 Tbsp liquid once a day, or 5 Tonalin or Spring Valley capsules)
GLA 500-1000 mg (2-4 Borage Oil caps a day)

How does CLA work?
A: CLA prevents fat from being deposited into the cells by speeding up the body's fat metabolism. CLA also helps the body metabolize existing fat deposits. This fat then returns to the blood stream where it is used as energy by muscle cells and the liver. CLA activates genes that trigger fat cell death, shrinks fat cells, speeds up metabolism.

CLA Turns on Fat Breakdown Genes
CLA Boosts Endurance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How does GLA work?
A: Numerous research studies have examined the role of GLA for improving health, specifically in the area of weight loss. GLA from borage oil causes less body fat to accumulate. Borage oil owes its healing power to the presence of essential fatty acids, the most important of which is GLA, an omega-6 fatty acid. (While borage oil is often used interchangeably with evening primrose oil, ounce for ounce, borage oil boasts more than twice as much GLA.)
Guidelines for Use
Taking borage oil with food may boost GLA absorption and minimize unpleasant side effects.
If you take an anticoagulant (blood-thinning) medication, check with your doctor before trying borage oil. The are no other known drug or nutrient interactions associated with borage oil.
Possible Side Effects ...
Borage oil may cause loose stools and minor stomach problems.
Other benefits of Borage Oil...
Reduce the symptoms of eczema and psoriasis
Clear up acne and rosacea
Alleviate inflammation associated with lupus
Prevent nerve damage (neuropathy) due to diabetes
Combat damage from multiple sclerosis
Ease cough and soothe throat disorders
Treat Alzheimer's-related memory deficiencies
Reduce stress and high blood pressure
Nourish nails, scalp, and hair
Counter impotence and female infertility
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

CLA Q&A

Is CLA Safe to Take With My Thyroid Medications?
There's no evidence that CLA, a food supplement, interacts with thyroid medications, or poses any special dangers to thyroid patients. But you should always discuss any supplements you intend to take with your own physician or practitioner before starting.

Is CLA Only for People with Thyroid Problems?
Absolutely not. The studies have shown that it's effective in general for reducing/converting fat. You don't have to have a thyroid problem -- you just have to be overweight -- to benefit from CLA.

How Much Should I Take?
The study found that 3.4 grams of CLA was needed in order to get the benefits. That's 3,400 mg. Since the various formulas contain a percentage of other oils as ingredients, it's wise to probably calculate how much each pill is delivering to make sure you're getting the full 3.4 grams a day. For example, if your capsule contains 75% CLA, and it's 1000 mg, then you're getting 750 mg of CLA, and would need 5 per day to get to the 3.4 grams level.

How Should I Take It?
The various recommendations differ here. Some recommendations suggest to take it before eating. Others suggest to take it with meals. Take it preferably with lowfat or nonfat milk for maximum protein absorption. Personally, I'm taking it right before I eat with some Calorie Countdown milk.

Does CLA Have Any Side Effects?
Some people report feeling slightly green or nauseous after taking their CLA, or isolated cases of gastrointestinal upset or loose stools. These side effects typically are reduced when the product is taken with protein (i.e.,with milk), and usually decrease after about 2 weeks taking the supplement.

Usually, in the first three weeks, the abdominal fat "pooch" starts shrinking. Other "fattier" areas (such as cheeks, upper arms, rear end) seemed to be slowly reducing as well. You may notice that your appetite is somewhat reduced. You may feel a bit green after taking the CLA the first couple days, but if you take it with milk, or protein it should eliminate that problem.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some may prefer the liquid CLA from Netrition. One bottle which is $19.99 lasts a full month. You just take 1/2 Tbsp a day to get your full dose. You may also prefer to get your Borage Oil from Netrition. It has a higher GLA content, so less pills to take, and more pills per bottle than other brands. So by getting your combo from Netrition, its alot cheaper than taking all the caps from other stores.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

On the first of each month you can post progress pics with your cla/gla results. You will not be pressured to post them if your not comfortable doing so. Some of us feel we stay more accountable if we do, and it helps that others can see good changes in the update pics that we cannot see ourselves. If you choose not to post them, thats ok, but please take them anyway for yourself to compare updates with. Thats where you will see the changes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you're taking CLA, don't take your Omega-3s at the same time. They will compete against each other for absorption. Leave at least a 3 hour window when taking both.
If you take an anticoagulant (blood-thinning) medication, check with your doctor before trying borage oil
lucki, I am so sorry you broke a rib. Congrats on not dropping the ball lol. Hoping for a speedy recovery for you
micki, Precognition? ghosts?...yep, I believe too. Hopefully someone will have some creepy stories to share this Halloween season.
We put up some tree stands today and saw lots of trails and rubs. One small scrape. We have three more stands to put up which will be done next week. No hunting yet. I do not plan to start untill the end of the month when it gets a little cooler.
I spend allot of time in the woods and have never seen big foot. If I had, don't you think I would of shot him?
We do have mountian loins in the area. I have seen their tracks but never seen one in our area. I did see one a few years ago a few miles from here while turkey hunting. I should of went over and introduced my 12 gauge to him.
My wife went on a ghost hunt a few years ago and got pretty freaked out. I don't belive in ghost. I do belive in the Father, Son and HOLY GHOST though.
Hi Phil, metqa
I found some more info on the CLA. Thought it might be a good refresher...
To understand the true benefits of Tonalin CLA, we must also unlock the mysteries behind CLA itself. To do this, we have gathered below some of the most common questions asked about using Tonalin CLA as a CLA supplement.
1. What is CLA?
LA stands for “conjugated linoleic acid”. It is a fatty acid known for promoting good health. This was first identified by Dr. Michael Pariza in 1978 while he was studying beef extract as a cancer prevention. What he found instead provoked a surge of research and scientific studies into the benefits of CLA as a fat reducer. After looking at decades of research scientists have found that CLA may in fact help the body to deposit less fat, build more muscle and may even help prevent fat cells from refilling.
2. How does CLA work?
LA actually works within your body in 4 different ways:
First: Your body contains an ezyme called lipoprotein lipase or LPL. This enzyme actually breaks down fat from your diet which is then stored in your body. CLA naturally suppresses this ezyme and decreases LPL activity which results in your body deposting and storing less fat overall.
Second: CLA decreases the size and the number of fat cells in your body, otherwise known as adipocytes.
Third: There is a natural process going on within your body that causes fat cells to disintegrate. This process is called “cell suicide” or the more clinical term, “apoptosis”. CLA increases your body’s apoptosis rate (rate at which fat cells disintegrate) thereby decreasing the number of fat cells that will be stored in your body.
Fourth: Another enzyme called carnitine palmitoyltransferase or CPT, transports fatty acids which are turned into the energy you need to keep going. There have been some additional studies that show a CLA supplement can increase your body’s CPT activity. As a result, fat is burned up faster.
Additional studies are being done to determine other possible health related benefits.
3. Where does CLA come from?
CLA is a natural 100% lipid product derived from safflower oil. It is actually found in some of the foods we eat. Dairy and beef products are one of the biggest natural sources of CLA. However, diets have changed over the years and on the whole, we are naturally consuming much less CLA than we used to. Because of this, many are looking to CLA supplement their diets. This is easy to do now that scientists have developed a proprietary process which can convert the linoleic acid of pure safflower oil into CLA. This makes it easy to add a CLA supplement into your diet by taking the recommended daily dose either in capsule or liquid form.
4. What is Tonalin CLA?
CLA has been highlighted more often in recent years. One of the major differences to note between Tonalin CLA and other leading CLA brands is that Tonalin CLA is made from Safflower as compared to other CLA brands which are made from Sunflower oil. Those made from sunflower oil may contain as little as 30% CLA while Tonalin CLA contains up to 82%
Tonalin CLA has been clinically tested and is said to be the most researched, highest quality CLA supplement as well as the most effective for both health and dietary benefits. It does not contain any natural or artificial stimulants. Nor does it contain any natural or artificial ephedra. These factors and more have made Tonalin CLA an ever increasingly popular CLA supplement within the weight loss industry. As with any dietary supplement however, including Tonalin CLA, you should always consult your physician first and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for taking the recommended daily dose.
5. Are there any side effects of Tonalin CLA?
Clinical studies over the years have shown there to be no adverse reactions or side effects of Tonalin CLA when taken at it’s recommended dose. It is 100% natural and safe. However, when doing our own research on this subject for this article, we did find some cases where users commented on experiencing some nausea. This didn’t seem to be the norm and from the different reviews, not everyone had the same experience.
Here are a few tips other users have found to help minimize any potential side effects of Tonalin CLA:
1. Do not take on an empty stomch. The recommended daily dose for optimum efficeinecy is 3,000-4,000 mg per day. CLA supplements are available in doses of about 500mg to 1300mg. Therefore, it is wise to split the recommended daily dosage into 3 servings and take each one with your main meals.
2. Drink lots of water throughout the day.
3. Eat smaller meals more often during the day. A common schedule many users adopt is to eat approximately every 2-3 hour interval for a total of 5-6 times per day. This would give you a meal, snack, meal, snack, meal and maybe another very light snack. Your last meal or snack should be eaten 3 hours before your bedtime.
4. If you do not adhere to a regular exercise routine, you will notice increased benefits if you include extra activity in your daily routine. Take a walk in the evening or early morning. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park in the farthest corner of a parking lot and walk the extra steps to the store. Jog up and down the stairs when heading to the basement to do your laundry.
Though side effects of Tonalin CLA are rare, they have been reported to occur in some users. All of these little added activities and additional tips practiced throughout the day will add up. Use them to greatly enhance the postive effects without adding any negative side effects when taking Tonalin CLA as a CLA supplement.
Final notes on Tonalin CLA
A balanced, healthy diet and exercise regime is an important combination to add to the effectiveness of supplementing with Tonalin CLA. No pill in the world is a fix-it-all solution and will do NOTHING for you, if you’re still going to sit on the couch all day and stuff yourself full of high fat foods and junk.
Be sensible.
Eat healthy, add in some daily exercise and supplement your diet with Tonalin CLA. The results and your better health will then speak for themselves. Aren’t you worth it?
Morning all....
Thanks for the info trish! Its been rainin here for the past 2 days.....its kinda dreary its bad because i watched TV all day yesterday and i didnt get anything done with the house....
Keep in mind that precognition is the ability to see things that are going to happen in the future, approximatly 24-48 hours after you dream them.I never believed in precognition before but after reading up on it it states that there are people that have this got if after having a tramatic experience.My mother passed away when i was 17 and it wasent long after her death that there was weird things that were happening. kinda creepy... LOL I was prego with my middle DD and i had slept on the couch ( cuz my back hurt) and about 5 am my DH was in the kitchen making coffee, i sat up (not even awake) and told him that his main differential in the truck broke... he laughed at me and said " do you know what that is?" ummm no i replied, he said ok i will check it this weekend, well come to find out that both seals in it had gone bad... So i saved him about $700.00. LOL
I have also had some other unexplainable things happen also..I was looking up Precognition last year on this computer ( speakers were off) all of a sudden music came from the speakers.... EXTREMELY LOUD! my DH even came in to check it out. yup they were off.
Who had creepy stories?
LOL
I have never seen a ghost, but i have seen other things......
Vals the resident expert, I wish I knew, but I do know that you need sulfur for almost all the repairs your body makes so MSM would help, but I don't know interactions and stuff.
I eat enough cauliflower to get plenty of sulfur. (as the bubbles in my tummy indicate)
Good morning Lucki!!! How are you feeling today? R U getting your rest? Hope so! Today I'm gonna take the boys to the Discovery Museum in Santa Ana to watch a 4D Dinosaur movie. Have you ever done this? These movies are so cool! You gotta wear those little glasses and the images come out at ya. The other neat thing is, there are other effects such as steam that comes out into the audience as well as smells like pine and eucaliptis from the trees! It's a good way to kill a whole day cuz there are so many fun things to do there like an earthquake room and bed of nails exhibit!!!
I'll check in on ya when I get back.
Oh not too bad really. I just can't get out of my hum-drum mood. I have absolutely no energy. The stress at work is still high. There was another fall-in Saturday. It almost got our blaster guy. They put a new 16ft fan in to draw fresh air into the mine, and this cooler air is making things unstable. Once it gets below freezing, things are really going to start falling. Its getting very scary down there.
Wow Trisha! Sounds like you and your crew need some extra . Is it possible that there is something in the environment that is causing you to be so down besides the stress alone? Please take care.
So she wrapped me today and gave me a stronger vicodin. she says i can go back to work with it but i don't know how i'm gonna do that when the vicodin makes feel REALLY loopy! The wrap fell off at the pharmacy and i'm getting ready to lay down for a while. i'm not the kind of person who sits still very long.....this has got me doing absolutely nothing!! will have to get used to it i guess....thanks for thinkin of me.....talk to you later.
LOL! I'm glad to hear a sense of humor! Means that you'll be okay as long as you don't get hooked on the vicotin. Yuck. That stuff makes me feel like hurling.
Tom, ADLMA and myself all have something in common. Our spouse's jobs run the risk of major danger. Glad you made it home safely.
