~*~September 2008 CLA/GLA...& Whatever Is Working For You !!!~*~

This thread is for anyone wanting to know about the CLA/GLA combo "and" whatever plan is working for you !!!

Come join us and share your plan

Welcome"

Because of the potential for side effects and interactions with medications, dietary supplements should be taken only under the supervision of a knowledgeable healthcare provider.

What is CLA/GLA?

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)—to promote lean muscle while burning fat.

Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA)—for its many beneficial effects in fighting muscle inflammation and supporting the immune system. From a fat loss perspective, GLA is vital in supporting the production of two strong fat burning hormones…growth hormone and the body’s primary calorie burning hormone, thyroid hormone. GLA should be taken with food

Most effective daily dose...
CLA 3400 mg (1/2 Tbsp liquid once a day, or 5 Tonalin or Spring Valley capsules)
GLA 500-1000 mg (2-4 Borage Oil caps a day)

How does CLA work?
A: CLA prevents fat from being deposited into the cells by speeding up the body's fat metabolism. CLA also helps the body metabolize existing fat deposits. This fat then returns to the blood stream where it is used as energy by muscle cells and the liver. CLA activates genes that trigger fat cell death, shrinks fat cells, speeds up metabolism.

CLA Turns on Fat Breakdown Genes
CLA Boosts Endurance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How does GLA work?
A: Numerous research studies have examined the role of GLA for improving health, specifically in the area of weight loss. GLA from borage oil causes less body fat to accumulate. Borage oil owes its healing power to the presence of essential fatty acids, the most important of which is GLA, an omega-6 fatty acid. (While borage oil is often used interchangeably with evening primrose oil, ounce for ounce, borage oil boasts more than twice as much GLA.)
Guidelines for Use
Taking borage oil with food may boost GLA absorption and minimize unpleasant side effects.
If you take an anticoagulant (blood-thinning) medication, check with your doctor before trying borage oil. The are no other known drug or nutrient interactions associated with borage oil.
Possible Side Effects ...
Borage oil may cause loose stools and minor stomach problems.
Other benefits of Borage Oil...
Reduce the symptoms of eczema and psoriasis
Clear up acne and rosacea
Alleviate inflammation associated with lupus
Prevent nerve damage (neuropathy) due to diabetes
Combat damage from multiple sclerosis
Ease cough and soothe throat disorders
Treat Alzheimer's-related memory deficiencies
Reduce stress and high blood pressure
Nourish nails, scalp, and hair
Counter impotence and female infertility
CLA Q&A
Is CLA Safe to Take With My Thyroid Medications?
There's no evidence that CLA, a food supplement, interacts with thyroid medications, or poses any special dangers to thyroid patients. But you should always discuss any supplements you intend to take with your own physician or practitioner before starting.
Is CLA Only for People with Thyroid Problems?
Absolutely not. The studies have shown that it's effective in general for reducing/converting fat. You don't have to have a thyroid problem -- you just have to be overweight -- to benefit from CLA.
How Much Should I Take?
The study found that 3.4 grams of CLA was needed in order to get the benefits. That's 3,400 mg. Since the various formulas contain a percentage of other oils as ingredients, it's wise to probably calculate how much each pill is delivering to make sure you're getting the full 3.4 grams a day. For example, if your capsule contains 75% CLA, and it's 1000 mg, then you're getting 750 mg of CLA, and would need 5 per day to get to the 3.4 grams level.
How Should I Take It?
The various recommendations differ here. Some recommendations suggest to take it before eating. Others suggest to take it with meals. Take it preferably with lowfat or nonfat milk for maximum protein absorption. Personally, I'm taking it right before I eat with some Calorie Countdown milk.
Does CLA Have Any Side Effects?
Some people report feeling slightly green or nauseous after taking their CLA, or isolated cases of gastrointestinal upset or loose stools. These side effects typically are reduced when the product is taken with protein (i.e.,with milk), and usually decrease after about 2 weeks taking the supplement.
Usually, in the first three weeks, the abdominal fat "pooch" starts shrinking. Other "fattier" areas (such as cheeks, upper arms, rear end) seemed to be slowly reducing as well. You may notice that your appetite is somewhat reduced. You may feel a bit green after taking the CLA the first couple days, but if you take it with milk, or protein it should eliminate that problem.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Some may prefer the liquid CLA from Netrition. One bottle which is $19.99 lasts a full month. You just take 1/2 Tbsp a day to get your full dose. You may also prefer to get your Borage Oil from Netrition. It has a higher GLA content, so less pills to take, and more pills per bottle than other brands. So by getting your combo from Netrition, its alot cheaper than taking all the caps from other stores.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On the first of each month you can post progress pics with your cla/gla results. You will not be pressured to post them if your not comfortable doing so. Some of us feel we stay more accountable if we do, and it helps that others can see good changes in the update pics that we cannot see ourselves. If you choose not to post them, thats ok, but please take them anyway for yourself to compare updates with. Thats where you will see the changes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

If you're taking CLA, don't take your Omega-3s at the same time. They will compete against each other for absorption. Leave at least a 3 hour window when taking both.

If you take an anticoagulant (blood-thinning) medication, check with your doctor before trying borage oil

I think I got some new inspiration to get back on plan. We have a girl on our crew who weighs about 95 pounds at most. She was trying to make a joke and told me if we went hiking in the mountains and came upon a bear, he would eat me first, I was the buffet, and then he would use her for a toothpick . I know she was making a joke, and I laughed with her, but it sorta kinda hurt too. I dont wanna be seen as a buffet

Not sure whats going on with my hands but since the slope car crash, my right hand keep tingling and my left hand feels like the nerves are exposed. Time for a Dr. Visit

Thanks Trisha! And as for this little brat who said this to ya, I think and I'm sure most would agree that she deserves a kick in the pants! What's with these insensitive people???

Okay...I've come back after just thinking of something. Maybe she is one of those people who doesn't like the fact that she's that skinny and wishes she had more meat on her, hence the toothpick crack at herself? What a rare person that would be huh? Just a thought.

Here is a pic of me on the pier at Holland State Park in Michigan. I didn't know that my wife had taken the pic. I thought it was ok. I was watching some one let their kid jump off the pier. That made me nervous

Do spiders scare you? I found a BIG one in my garage tonight. I won't post the pic if you all don't want me too.

The bear would leave you alone Trish. You know how to keep your cool under pressure. The toothpick girl...she would be screaming bloody murder and run away causing the bear to take chase. He would eat her just to shut her up then be left with such an awful taste in his mouth that he wouldn't even think about comming after you.

Don't let things like that bother you.

Did you report to the company you work for that your hands have been bothering you? If not, do it soon just incase it gets worse. The company needs record of it for workman's comp. I hope your hands return to normal soon so you can choke that 95 pound snotty little twig......I'd better stop right there.

Hi everyone. I've been trying to take advantage of the swimming pool before hubby closes it, so I haven't been on the computer as much.

Wow is all I can say!!!! Mikki and Chic, you both look WONDERFUL!

Phil, that is a nice pic of you. I agree that your wife should take more pics.

Trish - I think you are beautiful and you don't look like a buffet to me. I would go to the doctors and have your hands checked out.

Chic - I agree, out of all I have done in my life, I feel most happy about being a SAHM. I love knowing that what they believe and what they have learned came from me. I love that their faith in God is a direct result of my life and my teaching. I thank my DH almost daily for being out there, so I can stay home. He thanks me for being with our girls. Most of all, I thank God for trusting me with these three lives. I pray daily for wisdom and discernment as we raise these children. I have no doubt that you are an awesome mom. You mother from the heart. I can tell that about you. You live from the heart. Luv ya, Sis

Phil - You are looking good! The concern for the child shows in your face. Did you see my post about the 6 turkeys in my yard? I tought of you right away.

Trish - Do stay on top of that tingling. It may well be coming from your neck. I know you were trying to avoid a report, but you have to think of your body first! I do hope you are OK. It was an awful accident. Now, about the toothpick, I know for a fact the bear would go for you first. They LOVE honey! You are such a good and sweet person, the bear simply could not resist you! Also, thank you for asking about my tummy. The surgeon has moved the charge from my unit way up, then increased the frquency of the charge and the duration of the charge to my tummy. I feel so much better now. It is hard to believe how horrible I was feeling and still functioning. Thank you so much for asking. Let us know about that hand! Meanwhile, you are in my prayers.

MMof2 - Hey Pack-Rat-Sista! Enjoy that pool! Wish I had one! This has been such a hot dry summer. We are watching Hanna now. She may throw a little fun our way.

Mikki - Hi pretty girl! How are you feeling these days? Still sore?

Michele, I envy you your swimming pool lol. We may try to get one too after all the remodeling on the house is done.

ADLMA, you have got to be the sweetest lady I have ever virtually met !!! I am so glad your tummy is feelin better. About my hands. I keep getting those ganglion (sp?) cysts in my wrists. I have them in both wrist right now and I think that may be the problem since they grow on the nerves in your wrist. I usually just wack them on the wall or desk to break them (the shots hurt like H*ll) but these arent breaking this time. So I will call the Dr. tomorrow and make an appt. But like Mikki said, the Dr's are so busy they always have one foot out the door and they are there and gone before you even get any questions out. You wait 2 hours in the waiting room, then another hour in the exam room and its over in 2 minutes. Your left sitting there thinking "is that it ????"

mikki, I feel for ya gf, its frustrating trying to find info on stuff at times.

The stress at work is at an all time high. We couldnt run rock one night so we were sent on the slope to clean, pick up rocks off the track and such. My boss made me Lead woman and put me in charge of the crew. The only ones who would work were me, the girl who weighs 95 lbs and a 55 year old man who recently had to have half his foot amputated because of severe lime burns. The other 3 young, burly country boys, worked very little or actually layed on the car and slept.
I was telling some of the other guys about it and one of them reported it to my supervisor who came to me and asked about it. I told him it was true and they got a good talking to. Well they are so mad that they were caught being lazy now they are after me trying to get me in trouble for picking up rocks myself on the slope against my restrictions. Its kinda funny, they got in trouble for NOT working and they are trying to get me in trouble FOR working. Go figure. Its like working with a bunch of grade school boys down there. The only ones who will work and care about getting our production out (220 loads per shift) is the 3 girls on our crew !!! My boss caught me crying last night (I hate crying) because I am so stressed out and told me I have nothing to worry about but they do if they don't stop causing trouble and start doing their jobs!! Had to get that off my chest wheeeew !!!

i'm back from vacation....2 weeks i have discovered is the magic number of days away from work that erases the stress memory and allows you to function normally. First day back was rather productive!! i am found that the carnitine i am taking is keeping me trim! several people were astonished and convinced that i lost more weight while away..the scale is lying if that is true but i am still a bit puffy from the travel swelling. will try again tomorrow.

Chic- let me know what's on tap for the visit!!! talk to you later.

Thanks ADLMA....Your words keep me going in the right direction. I'm really finding out for myself that if you believe with all your heart in the things that matter most and have gratitude (toward God of course) at all times, there is an outcome of abundance!

Lucki....The time is getting closer. I talked with one of my cousins who has been out there recently and I guess the place to go is SHOOTERS??? What street is this place on and will I be able to pull you away from the fair long enough to meet me there? Ha ha ha....I'm excited!
Where did you guys go for your vacation?

Wow, what an inspirational thought. I always find myself dwelling on the little stupid stuff instead of focusing on what really matters.

Thank you all for your kind words. It really means allot to me. I have a pretty low self esteem. I see my self as not good looking at all. I don't know why. I just do. Thank you again.

Yes, I was down right pissed about that guy letting his kid jump in the water. The kid was screaming and crying, he clearly didn't want to do it.

ADLMA...I did see your post about the turkey in your yard and got a kick out of it. They are an ugly bird but in away they are pretty too. Very smart bird for having a pea sized brain.

Trish - I am so sorry you are going through this at work. I don't know why folks don't just report for work, do the job they get paid to do, mind their own business, and go home. Your supervisors know that you are a good employee and they are fortunate to have you. You most likely do more in one day than those husky boys do in a week. Got ya in my prayers!

Chic - You are so positive! Your posts are like drinking cold swee tea! Hope that makes sense.

Phil - If the turkey are so smart, do you think I can train them to use the woods and not my yard? It finally rained, and whey boy, how uhm pleasant. All I can say is, they had better stop being so brave, around these parts, they'll be on somone's table in a heart beat. I guess the super dry weather brought them out of the woods. You could tell you were watching the situation off the pier with a lot of concern. Why would a parent do that to their child? I just don't get it.

Mikki - I am sorry you are having such a hard time finding out inforatoin about your condition. I wish I could do something to help. I am also sorry your doctor is offering little to no concern. I guess I was very blessed with my surgeon. I have to see her every two or three weeks to get my unit adjusted. She talks to me, listens to me, evaluates me, and takes time to play with my girls, who are always in tow. If you can think of some way I can help you in your quest for informatin, please don't hesitate to ask me about it. I truly mean that.
