5HTP, Gaba & Tyrosine

Welcome all!

I'm dealing with extreme anxiety/shyness. So I thougth why not try some supplements.. I've been searching on the internet for alot of information about neurotransmitters and stuff. I will try some stuff.

-L-Tyrosine (to raise serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine)
-Gaba (to raise Gaba neurotransmitters)
-5-HTP (raise serotonin) [They say it's better than SSRI)

I don't know if all this information is true about neurotransmitters.

So a few question before I try.

Can I use these supplements together at same time?
I heard you cannot use vitamin b6 and 5-HTP together( dangerous??)
Should I take these supplements with just some water?
Are these harmfull at long term use?

Thanks you and sorry for language.

Welcome Mark!
  1. Can I use these supplements together at same time?
Yes, they actually work synergistically together.
  2. I heard you cannot use vitamin b6 and 5-HTP together( dangerous??)
Thomas Yuschak warns against taking 5-HTP with B6 because there has been speculation that doing so may lead to heart damage. However, speculation is all it is since there are no scientific studies that support it. Even Yuschak says that unless it's a really large dose of B6 it shouldn't matter if you take it.
  3. Should I take these supplements with just some water?
    Yes, that's best.
  4. Are these harmful at long term use?
Not really known but not thought to be harmful. Taking a break from supps once in a while is a good practice though.
Timing is important to seeing good results.

Recommended dosages:
  • L-tyrosine ~ 500-2000mg first thing in the morning, mid-morning & mid-afternoon.
Not with meals. It's a stimulating and energizing amino acid so it competes with protein. If you find you have trouble sleeping, reduce the dosage or eliminate the mid-afternoon dose.
  • GABA ~ 100-500 mg taken midmorning, midafternoon & bedtime (take at least 20 minutes before eating protein)
  • 5-HTP ~ 50-100 mg midmorning & midafternoon, 100 mg bedtime

The dosages will vary according to what works for you. Start with the least amount & if that doesn't help, increase the amount. You would do well to check out the book The Diet Cure and/or The Mood Cure, both by Julia Ross. She has great info on what to do to feel your best--and it works! There is more info in this this thread. The Diet Cure

Wow. You seem to know alot of it This is really information I could use. I will start with low dosage and see what happens. I also take a multivitamin (and some extra vitamins (B-complex, C and D, but I will stop this, too expensive) and fish oil. Thanks alot
