Supplements

Frequently, I advise folks to purchase high quality supplements. While I have favorite brands and opinions about such, it doesn't always fit the expectations or price range of other members here. To see if your supplement is what it states, I have found a resource to share with you. ConsumerLab.com - independent tests of herbal, vitamin, and mineral supplements They are a non-profit company that examines all kinds of supplements and food products for their purity and whether what's on the label is what's in the bottle. In other words, you want to buy co q 10 - are there contaminants in it (which consumerlab looked for) and is the amount represented to be present of the actual active ingredient in there. They report companies that pass as well as fail. You can check them out free and if you find it useful can take out a year's subscription for about $20/yr which gives you access to all their reviews. Also a good source for information.
My pro-biotic checked out by the way for those of you utilizing my advice!

Hey, thanks, Fawn. You always have such good advice, I'm always looking for your posts
I wonder about the different brands of supplements I buy and the purity/strength, etc.
Thinking of taking some nutrition classes at the local college. Got any classes you would recommend? I said THINKING about it....don't know yet. Just wish I had a broader knowledge of nutrition.

oh thanks girls! You know Linda, I have taken Nutrition 101 at my local community college. The food pyramid is taught. What I would more so recommend for you is to research nutrition counselors in your area and search their web pages looking for speeches and lectures. Nutrition 101 is a basic science class for those looking for the credits in the medical field or looking at becomeing a dietician. Sitting through one of those semesters will do nothing but irritate you I'm sure. One must listen to the same low fat garbage that we are trying to avoid.

Linda, you will learn more browsing the weston price site than anywhere as it is a collaboration of several contributors.

Oh gosh, so glad you told me that, Fawn. It really would irritate me. I had no idea they taught the food pyramid <groan>

I belong to the Weston Price foundation and browse the site regularly. I just get frustrated and confused by differing opinions. Trying to find a way to lower my cholesterol for one thing, but not sure my cholesterol needs to be lower Doc and I disagree on several issues and I just now got on the bio identical hormones she prescribes and don't want to give them up. I don't seem to get along well with Dr's.

I know Linda.....it's a hard one. My Dad called the other night freaked out because his cholesterol was 280. He was on a med a few years ago and experienced the 'muscle pain" that was potentiall a side effect. I have him and my step mom on a whole foods plan and just went throught their pantry the other night......they're clean and the pantry's empty
Anyway, my point is, as he was leaving and refusing his Docs Rx for a cholesterol lowering drug (his ratio was like a 3) the doctor said and I quote "YOU'RE GOING TO DIE OF A HEART ATTACK" When I heard that, it took everything I had not to call Kaiser. I was furious! My Dad's side of the family has inherantly high cholesterol through the generations but guess what? NO HEART DISEASE!
I too subscribe to the WAPF. As well, follow Julia Ross, Sally Fallon and Mary Enig. Have my weekly broth on the stove as we speak!

You know something I just learned is that most fish oils are derived from farmed fish. High bacteria, no omega 3 so I would say research a higher quality fish oil more particularly cod liver oil.

Good going blondie!
And for everyone, I'm glad this site helps you as much as it helps me!

Hope you may have some insight, ahh yes some relevent info is that my hair is full & no probs at all. YOu know, Acai is one of those things that you want to be sure you know the source and processing method. While the ORAC value (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity in other words, their antioxidant value)of acai might be 1200, by the time they are processed and hit your shopping cart, the ORAC value drops to about 100 from what I have read. Just today in fact.... Incorporating a variety of high antioxidant foods will provide you with a nice high ORAC value. Acai travels a great distance and everyone is capitalizing on this little fruit.

Blueberries, Raspberries, green teas, etc. consumed consistently without the incorporation of refined foods will always be your best choice. Enjoy your Acai.....hope I wasn't a downer but want to share what I learn.

Mangosteen juice is all the rage here in Chicago-same situation I am thinking Fawn? The fruit itself is very delicate.

Supplement questions...too much?

Hello ladies. Been on atkins a long time, lost alot, gained w/a pregnancy, back on atkins since last may when I had my last child and have lost 83 lbs but have been STUCK since December! Still eating well, working out ... so Im thinking I am missing some key nutrients/supplements... Now I 'talk' to another forum and someone wrote me what they are taking but OMG it seems quite excessive to me... can anyone narrow this down to something a little more realistic? I know this is an odd question, i remember taking some sort of fish oil/omega 3 and chromium picolinate the last time I did atkins but can't really remember what else...

Please help! I was recently diagnosed with Mitochondrial Disease (also have hashimoto, coeliac and Reynaud's), and told that I should take creatine supplements. Since doing so I have felt that my thyroid has gone more hypo (still within range-supposedly) and am wondering if it may be the creatine... any ideas?
Thank you!!

so, what is the verdict for the acai juice or the acai supplement that you guys might have tried, i want to get some feedback from those who tried it and noted the difference. The science makes a lot of promise, wanted to see how the claims hold in real world

Yup lowcarbprincess this does seem excessive in my opinion...
I thought I was taking a lot. Once I am done taking them I am so full that I am not particularly hungry Here is what I am taking.
-1 tsp colloidal silver morn&night
-1T coconut oil morn&night
-1T ACV morn&night (1 more while I was fighting a sore throat)
-Probiotic 3x's day
-Vitamin C 2 caps 3x's/day (500 mg, I think)
-Vitamin d3 3 caps 3x's day
-echinacea 2tabs 3x's/day while I was fighting on sore throat - about done with these till I need them again)
-fish oil 1cap 3x's day
-grapefruit seed extract (or oil of oregano) 1 cap 3x's/day
-biotin 1 cap 2x's day
-magnesium 1 cap 2x's/day

all taken with at least 16oz water so I am now getting 6 - 8oz glasses of water/day. Whereas I used to drink no water at all...

I take creatine and I have hashi's. I cannot say how it would help in that aspect but it does help my wt training. It does NOT affect my thyroid meds though. Perhaps, you are just undermedicated and need more meds?
